Blasting with the aim to reduce oversize boulders in underground has many hurdles due to limited accessibilities and poor site conditions. Optimized drilling and blasting parameters can help to achieve this objective. The major challenges of the blast designers lie within deciding blast geometry, namely drill hole diameter, burden, and spacing. The general approaches covered worldwide to determine burden-spacing are based on various rules of thumb, which are based on previous experiences of blasts and the associated outcomes. However, many parameters influencing optimum burden-spacing to achieve desired fragment size are site specific. Sometimes drill geometry is decided based on associated blasting hazards rather than rock fragmentation. The Kuz–Ram model is a worldwide accepted rock fragmentation predictor. The parameters associated with this predictor also include burden-spacing for a blast. Back calculation of burden-spacing from the Kuz–Ram model can be used to achieve desired fragment size. This paper deals with burden-spacing determination by using an empirical approach for the underground stope ring blasting.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. This includes new and innovative technical solutions as well as the sensitive management of interests. The lignite industry has learned that openness and the constant effort to exchange viewpoints within their environment are all essential elements. The credibility that has been gained over the decades is the foundation on which the lignite industry can build its future. Beyond that a framework of political guidelines is necessary. Public interest in a secure and inex-pensive energy supply that also includes lignite is indispensable. In this context, the lignite industry will then be able to answer the questions which are directed at them and concern the economy, ecology, and social tolerability also by indicators."

Finite-difference digital computer models can be used to evaluate the effects of proposed mine dewatering and depressuring operations on ground-water aquifer systems. The effects of proposed dewatering and depressuring operations can be simulated for both underground and open-pit mining in confined and unconfined aquifer systems. Design of dewatering and depressuring well arrays to accommodate proposed mining operations in a variety of hydrogeologic settings can be accomplished through judicious application of well-documented and tested computer programs that are widely available from government agencies and universities. The speed and flexibility of the computer models can provide an economical means for comparison of alternative mining plans, and can be used to determine the optimum mine plan with respect to dewatering requirements.

In this study, the leaching rate of molybdenite concentrate was evaluated in sulfuric medium, and the influence of the diverse oxidants including hydrogen peroxide, manganese oxide, copper sulfate on the leaching rate was studied. Also, the effect of the addition of the ethylene glycol to the hydrogen peroxide was studied and results showed that with the addition of ethylene glycol, the leaching rate is increased 55% from 41% up to 80.3%. The optimum condition is achieved as 0.7 M of H2SO4, 4.4 M of H2O2, and 3.5 M of EG at 30 °C within 4 h of leaching time and 500 rpm. Also, inserting the oxygen with the pressure of 6 bar to the leaching autoclave, the leaching rate is increased more up to 86.4%. Finally, the leaching process was studied kinetically and the determined mode of controlling factor was specified based on the activation energy which equals 46.252 kJ/mole indicating the chemical reaction mode.

The mining complex, which the Mines Gaspé division of Noranda Mines Limited has operated in Murdochville since 1954, includes open pit and underground mines, two mills, one leaching plant and a smelter. The under- ground mining uses predominantly a large scale room and pillar method, rooms 15 m wide, 30 m high and 300 m long being common. Ore production is effected by 4.5 m3 front-end loaders and 32-tonne trucks powered respectively by 225 and 325 kW diesels. Daily dust and gas readings show that air quality can be maintained at an acceptable level with much less ventilation than that normally specified. This paper emphasizes the point that air requirements should be based on Air Quality Standards, thus allowing an operation to benefit from favourable conditions or from improvements such as exhaust treatment, fuel alteration, etc.

A safety climate case study was carried out at a surface metal mine where investigators administered the Liberty Mutual Short Scale Safety Climate Survey to 365–368 miners to measure safety climate in consecutive years. Following the baseline safety climate survey in 2019, Foundations for Safety Leadership (FSL) training was conducted with 81 middle to upper management employees at the mine site. Investigators found statistically significant differences in the pre vs. posttraining FSL assessment scores of the middle to upper management employees who attended the training. The follow-up safety climate evaluation was compared to baseline scores and revealed no significant improvement. The overall baseline company safety climate score of 76.38 increased minimally to 76.50 (p-value = 0.616). Investigators also evaluated differences in safety climate between the company’s three major divisions (operations, maintenance, and administration). Both years administration had the highest mean score and operations had the lowest mean score. The authors attributed the statistically significant differences found among the three major divisions to various dissimilarities in their work environments.

This paper describes the Darwin Silver Recovery project, located 66 km (40 miles) outside of Lone Pine, near Darwin, Inyo County, California. A lead-zinc mine and a flotation concentrator were operated there from 1945 to 1957. By the time the mine was shut down, 1.53 Tg (1.69 million short tons) of tailings had been stored in ponds. An average silver assay of 47 mg/kg (1.38 troy oz/st) of tailings stimulated interest for commercial silver recovery. A heap leach process was developed in 1981 at the Tucson Research Center of Anaconda Minerals Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company. Agglomeration techniques were used on the ore since the fine grind did not allow direct heap leaching. Lime and cement were required as binders, Early laboratory tests showed that recoveries equal to those from an agitated leach could be achieved at lower capital and operating costs. Laboratory tests determined cyanide requirements, lime and cement usages, and percolation or leach rates, as well as confirming that a zinc precipitation step could recover the silver from the leach solution.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) involves a wide range of practices, from highly informal and minimally mechanized mining operations with predominantly manual work to formal practices carried out by small but high-tech industrial mining operations [1]. ASM may be a traditional practice, with skills passed from one generation to another. It can be an important driver of local economic development, while simultaneously contributing to a complex array of positive and negative socioeconomic and environmental impacts. There are more than 100 million artisanal and small-scale miners in 80 countries worldwide, and they supply around 20% of the worldwide gold production [2]. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining (MINEM), in 2020, 32% of fatal accidents in formal (legal) Peruvian mining operations were caused by groundfall events [3].The lack of resources, knowledge of best practices in health and safety, and insufficient equipment used in ASM make the probability of suffering work accidents very high. Furthermore, groundfall is one of the main causes of accidents and injuries in underground mines around the world [4], and it is also a concerning problem in ASM, where the associated fatality rate is similarly high. Unfortunately, a proper record of accidents in ASM is not kept, so an estimate of the actual number of groundfall accidents cannot be accurately developed [5]. Currently miners rely on empirical and observational tools acquired through previous experience to assess groundfall risks. The risks for artisanal miners can tend to be significantly greater than risks for those from the mining industry. This is due to the lack of regulation of ASM, which tends to operate outside the legal framework and the regulations lack of enforcement in force for occupational health and safety regulations.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. There are more than 100 antimony minerals, although the sulfide mineral stibnite is the main one.Antimony enters the supply chain either as a result of mining (primary production) or recycling (secondary production). China has by far the largest antimony resources and is, as a result, the world’s center for antimony mine production. In 2016, it accounted for more than three quarters of the global mine supply out of a world production figure of 130 kt (143,000 st), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The biggest, and most high-grade deposits are found in southern China, with the largest mines located in Hunan, Guangxi and Yunnan provinces. Tajikistan, Russia, Australia and Bolivia are the largest mine producers outside China. A new antimony project in Oman made progress in 2016, producing first metal in April 2016 in test facilities, and then ordered three furnaces for a 26 kt/a (28,600 stpy) antimony metal and oxide smelter that is due on stream in late 2017.Antimony ingot production is not as widespread as is antimony mine production, owing to the high levels of pollution that are associated with antimony smelting. It is for this reason that smelting has been largely confined to China and other Asian countries, where environmental legislation is less stringent.Antimony oxide production is undertaken on four continents with China being the biggest producer. There is also a considerable amount of oxide production in Europe — which relies on imported feedstock, mostly from China. Antimony also enters the supply chain through recycling. Lead containing antimony is produced in a number of countries, mainly in secondary lead smelters. Typically, a blast furnace charge containing used or discarded battery plates, type metal or bearing metal is reduced to lead bullion, which is refined in reverberatory furnaces and melting pots. In the main, the antimony recovered is consumed in metallurgical applications. China was the biggest secondary antimony producer in 2016, and accounted for 25 retardants and lead-acid batteries. Flame retardants accounted for roughly 50 percent of consumption in 2016 with batteries representing about 25 percent. Other end uses include plastics and heat stabilizers, ceramics and glass and a variety of metallurgical applications. Demand has been sluggish since the global financial crisis, mostly because key markets failed to recover strongly from the downturn, particularly in Europe."

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

As was the case with many other mining companies, the management of Tennessee Copper Company' viewed with some interest reports in various trade and technical journals of the successful use of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures as an explosive in coal stripping., construction, open pit mining and finally in underground salt mines. The apparently simple transition from the "interested" stage to a point where in excess of 80% of the ex¬plosives used is ammonium nitrate may be of interest. The Tennessee Copper Company operates five mines in the "Copper Basin" of Polk County which lies on the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. The ore is a massive sulfide principally pyrrhotite and pyrite with some tough lime silicates as gangue while the walls are greywacke interbedded with schist. Average total production is 28,000 tons per 5-day week and an average of 422 feet of development per week. Development work consists of 8'x 8?, 6?x 7?, 5'x 7? and 4'x 6? drifts driven with drifter drills using 1-5/8" carbide detachable bits and 5'x 5' raises driven with stopers using 1-5/8" bits.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project involves the construction of a bored tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Chesapeake Bay (VA), between two artificial islands and parallel to the existing tube tunnel, built in the sixties. It will be the first transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a 44-foot-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) named "Chessie," manufactured by Herrenknecht, and which was assembled at the CBBT's southernmost island, with extremely limited room, live adjacent traffic, and difficult access. "Chessie" was successfully launched in February 2023 and this paper describes this complex and challenging process.

The project involves the construction of a new aqueduct tunnel by an Earth Pressure Balance TBM tunnel for the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct No 4 (NBAQ4) project in Metro Manila. It comprises a 7.3 km long and 3.1 m internal diameter tunnel that can deliver up to 1,000 MLD of raw water and the tunnel passes under urban residential and urban populated areas adjacent to and along Commonwealth Avenue. A new reservoir intake structure was constructed in the La Mesa reservoir by a cofferdam and the TBM breakthrough connected the reservoir to the outlet surge shaft structure and the downstream pipe network system connecting to the Balara Water Treatment Plant. The TBM incorporated a double articulated head configuration to allow tight 80 m radius curves to navigate some of the difficult alignment considerations. The alignment passed very close to some existing foundations for MRT7 and needed to clear several tight curves to remain within government land ownership. The project excavated through the local Guadalupe weak rock formations and there was minimal ground movements observed as a result of the work.

The need for a successful, efficient and reliable continuous face- haulage .system for use with continuous mining machines has been apparent since the first continuous miners were introduced some twenty-five years ago. Some thought and effort were given to the development of continuous haulage over the last twenty years or so. Some initial success was experienced in this area by The Long Company with a system involving bridge conveyors, as far back as the late 1950's. However, extensive success with continuous face haulage for use behind modern, high product¬ion, continuous miners escaped the industry until the early 1970's. It is true that continuous face haulage was successfully introduced into low seam mining, generally in seams ranging under 1.07 m (42") in height, in the 1960's, for use with relatively low production, low seam, auger type continuous miners. However, those available systems which have achieved success in the lower seams, where relatively low capacities are adequate, are not directly applicable for use with today's medium and high seam miners with their standard production capacity of 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm). Since the late 1960's and early 1970's, several machinery manufacturers, and at least two major coal companies, have devoted considerable expense, time and effort to developing truly successful continuous face haulage for use in coal seams ranging upward from 1.2 m (4') in height. Continuous face haulage equipment has been developed in the last five years employing a variety of transportation media and design concepts, including some which have received wide publicity such as those employing hydraulics, and pleated belt. The truth of the matter is, however, that the only universally applicable and widely successful continuous face haulage equipment introduced to date has been that employing a combination of bridge conveyors and mobile, self-propelled, bridge carriers, connected at the inby end to the tail of the high production continuous miner, and at the outby end attached directly to the panel conveyor (Fig. 1 & Fig. 2) or, on occasion, to a short, self-contained conveyor which, in turn, empties directly onto the panel conveyor. While these bridge type continuous haulage systems are available with both belt and chain conveyor components, the most widely applied and successful system in seams above 1.07 m (42") in height is that offered by The Long-Airdox Company. The standard unit for use with 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm) continuous miners is normally equipped with belt. However, they have built, and successfully applied, versions of this system employing chain conveyors, (Fig. 3), mainly for operators having extremely difficult mining conditions, including excessive amounts of water

Estimating productivity of a walking dragline is of paramount concern to mining engineers and mine planners. Risk based evaluation of the dragline productivity is a valuable tool to estimate the dragline’s long-term availability, to develop preventive maintenance plans and to make future projections about the dragline’s performance. This paper aims to provide mining professionals with an overview of risk assessment methodology for productivity of two walking draglines, Page 736 and Marion 7820, which have been operating in the Tunçbilek openpit coal mine of Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI) in Turkey. The study encompasses three main stages: (i) acquiring of monthly maintenance records, operating hours, mechanical and electrical failure hours between 1998 and 2009; (ii) reliability modeling using mean time between failure data and (iii) determining hazard rate and consequences to compute risk associated with dragline productivity. The results showed that that Page 736 (15.29 m3) seemed to be more reliable and less likely to fail when compared with Marion 7820 (30.58 m3). The operating hours without failure range from 41 to 51 hours with 50% reliability.

Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Representative samples of a composite mixture of three typical Cu/Zn complex sulphide ores, namely Black-, Yellow- and Altered-ore, from the Cayeli deposit in Turkey, were used for leaching tests in 2.2 M FeCl3, or 1 M CuC12-2 M NaCl solution in the temperature range from 313 K to 363 K (40O to 90O C), with and without the presence of an organic solvent for elemental sulphur, such as CCl4. The leaching rates of copper and zinc were quite high, as expected, in FeCl3 solution and complete recovery of both metals was obtained at the highest temperature when the solvent was present. However in CuC1, solution, extraction yields of the order of 95% only for Cu and Zn were achieved and the positive effect of the solvent was not clearly shown. The kinetics curves of Cu leaching by FeCl3 indicated a model of reaction rate depending on the particle surface, as in a chemically controlled reaction, in tests with the presence of CCl4. Without the solvent, or in CuCl2 media, the model of the diffusion controlled reaction seemed to prevail. Values of apparent activation energy, in both of the leaching processes, were determined and compared with those reported in literature.
