"A carefully planned laboratory test program is the foundation for the successful development of a sulfide flotation process. In this paper, the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process is described. However, the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and to many industrial minerals projects as well. Each step is examined, beginning with sample procurement and covering sample preparation, flotation test preparation grinding, scoping flotation tests for reagent scheme selection, rougher flotation parameter evaluation and cleaner circuit evaluation, through to locked-cycle testing and pilot plant design and operation. Ore variability and modeling to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established is also examined.IntroductionA carefully planned laboratory test program is essential for the successful development of any sulfide flotation process. These programs usually begin with a series of batch tests on several ore type composites to evaluate appropriate reagent schemes and delineate optimum rougher flotation conditions, such as primary grind size, flotation pulp density, flotation pulp pH and retention time. Cleaner parameters such as regrind size requirements, cleaner pH, pulp density and number of stages are then defined. Semicontinuous locked-cycle tests are performed using the parameters established in the batch tests to determine the effect of middling streams recirculation on flotation performance. The data generated and the experience gained in the locked-cycle tests may be used to design and operate a continuous pilot plant if relatively large amounts of concentrate are required for further process development, such as optimization of byproduct molybdenum production from bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate.A comprehensive ore variability program is undertaken to determine the response of various ore types to the optimum conditions established. These ore variability programs often test hundreds of samples in standardized batch rougher and cleaner tests to ensure that the orebody is well understood.This article describes the development of a copper-molybdenum flotation process, but the concepts discussed can be applied to most sulfide flotation systems and many industrial minerals projects. "The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. RAs typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that these valves vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: (1) a modified polyvinyl chloride check valve, (2) an off-the-shelf brass/cast-iron butterfly check valve and (3) a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel prefabricated RAs and had been adapted for use in one mine operator’s built-in-place RA. PRVs used in tent-style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, regulations. The commercially available relief valve did not meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification but may meet the manufacturer’s specification. Alternative valve designs were modified to meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification, but all valve designs will need further design research to examine survivability in the event of a 103 kPa (15.0 psi) impulse overpressure during a disaster. BackgroundThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, known as the Miner Act (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006), was enacted in the wake of three mine accidents involving explosions or fire that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the Miner Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning; adoption of new technology; training and education; and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the Miner Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the U.S. Department of Labor to act on the results of such research, as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, mining health and safety regulations (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008), requiring underground coal mines to supply mine emergency RAs and associated components so as to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either selfcontained mobile units or built-in-place facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the approval of RAs and their components by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), among which are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere is the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008)."

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

[This paper summarizes the more popular mineral valuation techniques being used by the dining industry, and attempts to demonstrate how they are Interrelated and where some are in error when compared to modern methods of financial analysis. The academic community and the larger and more sophisticated raining companies, have largely rejected the older valuation methods such as the, Hoskold and Morkill concepts and replaced them with "discounted cash flow" (DCF) techniques. The relevancy and usefulness of the older methods have been questioned primarily on the basis of their underlying assumptions that mining companies do not have numerous alternative investments and must use sinking funds deposited at market or ?safe" rates of return to recover the purchase price of mineral reserves. The ability to reinvest In numerous (often non-mining} alternative business ventures, the changing purchasing power of the dollar, corporate income and other taxes, depreciation and depletion allowances, and modern financial management practice, all mitigate against the continued use of the older valuation methods, especially for the larger mining companies. Snail mining companies and Individuals still use these methods largely out of habit and familiarity. Of the impurities present in phosphate ore, dolomite is the most difficult to remove due to the similar chemical compositions of the impurities and also adsorption of dissolved species of dolomite onto phosphate. A new amphoteric surfactant was found to be a suitable collector for separation of dolomite from phosphate. Flotation results showed that the new amphoteric collector had a high flotation selectivity for dolomite in wide pH ranges. The flotation study of francolite and dolomite in each other's supernatant demonstrated that the dissolved ions had little effect on the selectivity of the new collector, but were detrimental to the flotation separation using sodium oleate as collector. A phosphate concentrate with 35.2% P2O5 with 90% recovery was obtained using 290 g/t of the amphoteric collector from a mixture of francolite and dolomite containing 26.2% P2O5. The rejection of MgO was 81.41%.

Following the completion of the 7,600 m primary access tunnel by Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) in April 1997, an exploratory East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was constructed at the Yucca Mountain Project over the proposed future repository block for high level nuclear wastes. The 2,681 m (8,796 LF) East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a re-built Robbins 5.000 m (16’-5”) hardrock TBM with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. Details of the unusual site and contract conditions will be discussed as well as with the unique tunnel equipment specified by the Owner. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project required eight months to complete.

The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to describe in engineering terms the singular and basic operational kinematics of all excavating and bulk handling equipment. The safe and efficient use of equipment will be fostered by enabling the engineer to conceptually duplicate the operators' "tasks" in directing and controlling it. A simple graphical and notational scheme will be introduced to define the essential gross repetitive motions. The significance of this effort includes filling a vital analytical gap at the work face, and in establishing direct communications between the engineer and equipment operator. Since all types and sizes of earth- moving equipment are covered, a major concern has been to integrate equipment specialties into d single encompassing discipline. Equipment types are closely related to the working conditions, and their selection and evaluation are also considered. The extension to human factors analysis is natural and predictable. Since human [actors are involved, the operational analysis can also be considered a catch-all for many subtle vagaries. BACKGROUND Symbolic modelling linked to a notational system will be developed and intensively used. This constitutes the "language of science," providing a shorthand method which gives immediate recognition, is fluent, explicit, reinforcing, unequivocal and provides limitless associations. Many examples of symbolic modelling exist in chemistry, physics, the military, engineering sciences and it is a major tool in mapping. Its use is so ubiquitous that it often goes unnoticed. On the other hand it must be realized that something is lost in simplifying and idealizing what is an extraordinarily complex occurrence. The components describing the basic operational kinematics of equipment include: (1) the vehicular motions as a rigid body and (2) the job-end motions focussing on excavating (Adler, 1985). These provide all of the components in the load-haul-dump sequence (L-H-D) , and will yield three dimensional expressions. Complex patterns can also be assembled from these simple elements. An existing equipment designation employed in earthmoving will be integrated into this approach (Carson, 1961). Along with the basic motions, corresponding working conditions will be noted.

Uranium mill tailings, waste products of uranium extraction, contain hazardous constituents that if released into the atmosphere and groundwater could threaten our health and environment. To provide for safe disposal and control of these tailings, Congress enacted the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-604). Subsequently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established standards for tailings disposal that limit radon emission into the air to 20 pCi m-2s-1 on an annual average basis (EPA 1983). The design life of the impoundment is to be 1000 years where practicable, but 200 years at least. To facilitate the design of containment systems that will meet the EPA standards, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are sponsoring research at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL)* to develop the necessary technology. Earthen and asphalt materials have been evaluated for use as radon barriers (Hartley 1983) and as liners to minimize leaching (Buelt 1983). Herbicide and rock barriers against biological intrusion have been evaluated (Cline 1982). Surface stabilization techniques have been investigated to maintain the long-term effectiveness of a containment system that must be protected from wind and water erosion, chemical and physical degradation, and biological disturbance.

Despite technological advancements and organizational adjustments, lost time accidents are major issues in occupational safety. However, there is very limited work that focuses on variables influencing days lost as a result of occupational accidents. In this study, decision tree and artificial neural network methods were used as machine learning techniques to investigate the impact of factors on accident lost day duration. Degree of injury, worker age, and worker activity were found to be the top three variables impacting loss of time from work. It was also identified that the mining method, location, and nature of injury had a moderate influence on duration lost due to occupational accidents. However, worker experience and ore type did not have any significant impact on the duration, which is an unexpected result. These results confirmed that some accident factors that might have a large influence on the number of mine accidents can be less critical when it comes to accident lost day duration.

"In mechanized tunneling the annular gap between the segmental lining and the surrounding soil caused by tunnel driving, must be backfilled almost instantaneously with an adequate grouting mortar. The objective of this research is to perform a fully three dimensional modeled parametric study using FLAC 3D and evaluate the effects of backfill grouting on the tunneling performance. The research focuses on comparisons between different injection materials and state-of-the-art Bi-Component grout and their effects on the settlements on the surface. The research consists of testing a regular situation of tunnel excavation using a shielded machine with face under pressure. The tunnel dimensions and the soil properties are selected as close as possible to the reality and based on Turin Metro case. 1 INTRODUCTION Excavation of tunnels in urban areas can induce ground movements, which have negative effects on existing structures. In such scenarios, shield tunneling has become a well-accepted construction method in various ground conditions. It is characterized by relatively complex interactions between the soil, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) itself, the tunnel lining and the tail void grout. The problem to control the settlement depends on the face pressure, ground properties and back filling procedure and material of the tail void. The face pressure acts against the front to guarantee the face stability. In case of EPB TBMs the stability of the tunnel face is ensured through the excavated soil itself, which is conditioned and is maintained in compressed state within the excavation chamber. When excavating with TBMs a tail void is created between ground and the lining (Fig.1) after the TBM excavation and ring assembly that must be backfilled instantaneously by injecting the backfill material through the TBM’s tail shield. The process is of primary importance as it reduces the surface settlements and creates an immediate link between the ground and lining, sealing against ground water and leakage, reducing the differential movements between segments and providing long-term stability. The most used backfilling materials are: Inert mixtures that do not contain cement instead sometimes they are replaced by fly ash or other substitutes. A typical design of an inert mortar consists of sand, fly ash, bentonite and water. Pea gravel, which is constituted of granular materials with grain size ranging from 8 to 12 mm. This mixture is highly recommended for tunnels being constructed in rock mass with little deformation rates.Cement mortar is composed of cement, water, aggregates and sometimes bentonite. Cement controls the principle mechanical property of the mix, which can reach high values of 15-20 MPa in 28 days. The aggregates contribute towards the shear strength and reduce the pumpablity of the mix (Thewes and Budach, 2009). The reduced active systems have a cement content of 50-100 kg/m3, whereas the active system the binder component derives full hydration with cement content of over 200 kg/m3 ."

Although the basic techniques employed in hydraulic pumping in open pit mining have been practiced throughout the better part of this century, only relatively recently have studies of' sufficient depth and scope been conducted to improve these techniques. This paper will point out the basic techniques involved and some of the more recently discovered data concerning hydraulic pumping, Inherent in all hydraulic transportation systems apart from the consideration of transportation cast, is the outstanding advantage of slurrying the matrix at the mining pit so as to provide a lengthy and thorough soaking and washing of the material while in the pipe line and thereby reduce the necessity for washing, scrubbing and other treatment in the beneficiation plant. This is quite important in view of the constant increase in demand for a cleaner product.

The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. The efforts to do so are herein described.

I feel very privileged to be added to the distinguished group that has received this award since the first recipient, Reno Sales, received it in 1954. If my research is correct, the last geologist to be honored was Bill Callahan in 1982. Perhaps the Awards Committee decided it was about time to select a geologist, and I became the beneficiary. Regarding the discovery of the Carlin ore body, it was the culmination of several studies - one going back as far as 1939 when a US Bureau of Mines engineer named W.O. Vanderberg recognized an unusual type of gold mineralization in sediments in northern Nevada. What was unusual was the fact that the gold was so fine that it would not concentrate in a pan. This, plus the study of the Roberts Mountain thrust by Ralph Roberts (1960) and conversations with Harry Bishop, manager of the Gold Acres Mine, pointed Alan Coope and me in the direction of the Lynn Window and, eventually, the Carlin discovery. There has been a great deal written about this discovery. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the evolution of Carlin gold exploration in Nevada since this time and to discuss the changes in perception of this unique type of mineralization. The method used by Coope and me in following up on Roberts' work was to map geologically the Roberts Mountain thrust and conduct geochemical sampling of favorable outcrops and float. Coope was highly experienced in geochemical exploration, as he had graduated from the Royal School of Mines in London, studying under John S. Webb, one of the pioneers of geochemistry as applied to mineral exploration. We first considered using pathfinder elements, but finally concentrated on gold analyses alone, even though the sensitivity of fire assays used at that time was only about one-half part per million. According to the spatial relationship of the mineralization to the Roberts Mountain thrust, as pointed out by Roberts (1960), we were looking for mineralization within the thrust itself. Our models were the known Gold Acres and Getchell mines, which contained reserves on the order of 0.9 to 1.8 mt (1 to 2 million st). These were not of substantial size, but I had hoped we might find more than one of these tributary to a mill that would justify an operation for our employer, Newmont Mining Corp. What we ended up with was the type of deposit we were looking for - an open pit deposit of micron gold, which the old timers had missed because the gold was not capable of being panned. But never in our wildest dreams did we think there was a chance of finding a body containing 10 mt (11 million st) of ore at 0.30 oz/st (10.3 g/t).The deposit was not in the thrust proper but was found in a favorable horizon of Roberts Mountain siltstone that was below the thrust. This is the first example of how a model should not be followed blindly. Newmont was successful in keeping this discovery quiet for some time. After a considerable amount of drilling, a rumor circulated that they had discovered a large low-grade ore body of around 1.7 to 2.1 g/t (0.05 to 0.06 oz/st), which of course would not have been economic with gold at $1.13/g ($35/oz), which was the fixed price at that time. The company, for obvious reasons, did not discourage the rumor. When, however, the true results came out there was a lot of feverish activity. Because of this new type of so-called "invisible gold," which could have been missed by the old timers, the thought was that other deposits would be discovered very soon. The Carlin and other smaller deposits, including Bootstrap, Blue Star and Gold Quarry, were in windows where the lower plate of the Roberts Mountain formation (below the thrust) had been exposed by erosion. Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.

More stringent dust standards, because of quartz in coal, have become a major compliance problem for the coal industry. Reducing quartz levels has become the major focus of the Bureau of Mines dust control research program. Results to date have identified hath the sources of quartz and prospective control technology. Control techniques are being developed for both room-and-pillar and longwall mining underground operations. Techniques include changes in face ventilation, mining cycle modifications, and better roof bolting dust control.

This information describes the ventilating and methane gas testing procedures utilized during the raising of a mine shaft using a Robbins 81-R drill. An overview of the raise boring process is presented to illustrate the ventilating and gas testing procedures. A mine shaft project, 4.88 m (16 ft) in diameter and approximately 457.2 m (1500 ft) in length, will be the focal point of the presentation, with reference to similar projects for additional comments on variations in procedure.

The Bond International Gold (BIG) Colosseum Gold Mine was discovered in 1865, but no recorded production occurred until the 1930's, with production approximately 19k9 (615 oz) of gold. The mine was closed in 1942 as a non-essential industry during World War II. The property was acquired by Dallhold Resources in mid 1986. Construction of a 1.1 million Mt carbon-in-pulp, cyanide mill started in November, 1986, and was completed in September, 1987. Minable reserves are estimated to be 9,560,831Mt (10,539,000St), with an average grade of 2.1 g/Mt (0.062 oz/st). This paper describes a general view of process flow and plant equipment, as well as a look at the maintenance and operational problems encountered in the fist six months of operation.

A surface charge sensor has been developed that responds to changes in the double layer properties of colloidal silica during the cationic flotation of silica from taconite ores. Sensor design allows for the measurement of two aspects of the electrical double layer surrounding all solids immersed in ionic solutions. One aspect responds to a flow induced change in the double layer properties of a solid. The other is a function of the chemical composition of the aqueous phase. Evaluation of sensor performance during froth flotation experiments has been encouraging. Process monitoring capabilities are indicated.

This project involves the reconstruction of a 1,100 ft. long by 75 ft. wide segment of an existing 4 to 5 track subway under Northern Boulevard in the Borough of Queens in New York City. The project includes widening the existing subway to permit the construction of new inbound and outbound subway (T1 and T2) ramps adjacent to and under existing operating tracks. The plan of the project is shown in Fig. 1. Existing tall buildings along the job site and a contaminated groundwater plume under an adjacent rail yard required construction of slurry concrete walls along the east and west construction limits. Groundwater cutoff across the north and south construction limits of the subway was achieved by jet grout walls built across the subway invert slab between existing track and third rails. The work involved dewatering the construction site to a depth of about 50 ft. below street grade. This is a four year project and includes extensive work to maintain and protect subway and vehicular traffic of over half a million commuters a day through the work area. The project cost was $160,000,000.
