The use of controlled recirculation can be dated back to the early 1930s. Although this method has been applied in many mines since then, a generalized comprehensive network analysis is still lacking. This paper presents a unique approach in which the ventilation network with a controlled district recirculation is divided into two subsystems: a main subsystem and a recirculation subsystem. The subsystems are analyzed individually and the results and their relationships are then integrated into discussions of the total ventilation system. The analysis of the recirculation subsystem is facilitated by introducing a non-dimensional parameter A, which represents the ratio of the air quantity for the working face to that for the subsystem. As a result, fan and regulator pressures and air power for various recirculation arrangements can be effectively expressed as a function of A and the subsystem air quantity. This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

The integrity of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars under the influence of longwall mining is a safety concern for both coal and gas operators. Previous modeling studies of gas wells in longwall pillars have shown that a FLAC3D model can predict longwall-induced stresses and deformations in gas well casings with reasonable accuracy. The predicted casing deformations can be verified by multi-finger caliper survey. This study concerns the influence of longwall mining on eight shale gas wells in a shale gas well pad located in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under 1,030 feet of cover. FLAC3D modeling was performed to predict longwall-induced deformations in gas well casings based on site-specific mining and geological conditions. Small deformations less than 0.5 in were predicted in the intermediate casing above 600 ft depth, and very small casing deformations less than 0.15 in were predicted below 600 ft due to high abutment pressure and high frictional resistance along the weak bedding interfaces. After the first panel was mined, a 56-arm caliper survey was performed on one of the wells to measure the longwall-induced casing deformations in the intermediate casing. The predicted casing deformations were then compared with the measured deformations, which indicated that the prediction was generally in good agreement with the measurement in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. Findings from this study provide valuable information not only for stability assessment of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars but also for developing engineering guidelines to preserve casing integrity through adequate pillar and casing design.

We believe we have a dynamic program that will help our vast coal resources to find their proper place in the U. S, economy. The present coal research activities of the Bureau are conducted in three organizational subdivisions: Minerals Research, Mineral Resource Development, and Health and Safety. All investigations are carried out in Bureau research facilities located in different sections of the country, Since its creation by the Organic Act of 1910 and subsequent amendments, the Bureau has worked closely with the coal industry--first by providing assistance in mine safety for anthracite and bituminous coal mining, and since that time, in providing information on conservation, safety, mining, preparation, and utilization.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are some- times large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County) , West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar re- treat mining. Findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water levels at shallower depths. Post-mining values of hydraulic conductivity were typically somewhat higher than pre-mining values. Changes in water chemistry associated with mining were not sufficient to render the water unfit for human consumption.

"The most important impact on the environment of a tunnel excavation is the creation of surface settlements. Nowadays, the mechanized tunneling allows minimizing the settlements, applying a confinement pressure which counterbalances the ground de-confinement. It is thus essential to determine the correct amount of confinement pressure. In this paper, the authors present a 3D numerical study simulating the EPB-TBM excavation of a water tunnel, in the Flanders clays (north of France). Firstly, a simplified 3D simulation, based on the concept of instantaneous longitudinal settlement curve, was performed to predict the surface settlements for different values of heading confinement pressures. Secondly, the same pressures were tested by the EPB-TBM in a monitoring zone. The comparison between the prediction settlements and the measurements was very satisfactory and allowed validation of the numerical approach and the choice of the optimal confinement pressure value for a sensitive area of the project. INTRODUCTION The excavation of a tunnel can create displacements of the surrounding soil which may affect existing structures and generate unacceptable dysfunction. The development of the closed shield tunneling has permitted to reduce the volume loss generated around the excavation and consequently the surface settlements. In this case, as explained by different authors (Clough et al., 1985; Kastner et al., 1996; Mair and Taylor, 1997), the ground movements are influenced by the TBM works: the heading confinement pressure, the shield overcutting and conicity, the annular void grout injection parameters, the segment concrete lining rigidity, the consolidation of the grout. Hence, in the tunnel design, it is important to take into consideration these different processes of the excavation works to simulate correctly the tunneling process."

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental baseline studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months, and the first gold bar was poured in March of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitoring program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine's twenty year life. Nonmined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

Phillips Coal Company (PCC) submitted the first surface mine permit application under the Office of Surface &lining approved regulatory program of the State of Louisiana. This application for the Oxbow Lignite Surface Mine which is located approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana was submitted in March 1981. The State of Louisiana Office of Conservation, Surface Mining Division, assigned this application number LSM-1, indicating it is the first one submitted in Louisiana history. The permit area for the Oxbow Mine encompasses 6,251 hectares (15,627 acres). Of this total permit area, 5,862 hectares (14,656 acres) were classified by soil type as prime farmland by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Prime farmland acreage in the permit area became a major central issue in our early planning stages and throughout the permitting process of the Oxbow Mine, due to the magnitude of acreage involved.

1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. The objective of this study is to provide potential users of booster fans in coal mines with the necessary information on monitoring and control of fans and environmental factors. The guide-lines listed in this paper were formulated based on the current practice of mine monitoring, the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations on environmental monitoring, and the United Kingdom's National Coal Board recommendations on the use of booster fans. The principles involved in the design of booster fans as well as the provisions needed to guarantee a safe operation of these units, are illustrated by means of an example problem. The example includes a summary of costs for two ventilation systems: a conventional surface fan system and a fully automated booster fan alternative. A comparison of these costs showed that significant gains may be attained by selecting a combined surface-booster fan strategy over a conventional surface fan alternative.

This paper describes the development and testing of the RAMEX excavation system. Incorporating a synergy of low velocity, high energy impact and kerf cutting, this machine offers a competitive alternative to drilling and blasting in hard rock. It is a boom mining machine that incorporates the features of a lightweight roadheader and it can mine nearly any shape opening in hard rock. The RAMEX Tunneler has been developed to satisfy industry demands for a non-explosive, flexible, continuous and rapid underground rock excavation system. It will produce minimum ground vibration in the urban environment and allow the flexibility necessary for thin seam mining conditions. It will also reduce initial ground support costs and has a minimum impact on rock integrity. Developed by RAMEX Systems with cooperative research provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, this system, could produce the next step in the continuing evolution of mechanical mining systems.

The schlieren technique describes an optical analysis method designed to enhance light distortions caused by air movement. The ability to visualize air flow has significant implications for analyzing underground mine ventilation systems, including the enhancement of surveys and models. Currently, traditional schlieren methods are impractical underground. Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) provides a solution to this problem. BOS requires two primary components, a professional quality digital camera and a schlieren background. A schlieren background is composed of a varying contrast repetitive pattern, such as black and white stripes. This background allows the camera’s sensor to capture minor light diffractions, such as those caused by air flow. Although BOS shows great potential for ventilation analysis, sensitivity is an issue. This paper seeks to validate the BOS technique for imaging flow through a regulator by comparing BOS images with traditional schlieren images. This paper also outlines initial experimental efforts used for the validation.

Computer based techniques for solving the Ultimate Pit Limit Problem have appeared in mining literature since the early 1960's. The majority of papers pertaining to this subject can be partitioned into one of two categories: discussion of the pros and cons of a particular algorithm, or a case study presenting specific applications of an algorithm. Subsequently, there has a1 so been considerable debate concerning the best techniques between, essentially, two camps: those favoring the moving cones techniques, and those favoring the techniques which yield true optimal pit designs. The purpose of this paper is not to add to this debate, but rather to present a few new ideas (partially a new look at an old idea), which can be easily implemented to noticeably improve any ultimate pit limit approach independent of the particular algorithm used. These ideas fall under the heading of "bounding the optimum" (Barnes and Johnson, 1980).

In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

As the U.S. coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 80% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

This paper presents the basics of EPA’s Hazard Ranking System (HRS), which is used to evaluate sites for possible inclusion on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). The paper describes the surface water, ground water, air, and soil exposure pathways and how they are applied to mining sites. Key factors contributing to the site score include the likelihood of a release, waste characteristics, and the targets for each pathway. Waste volumes, definitions of landfills versus surface impoundments, and background concentrations are of particular importance to mining and smelting sites. Because of the presence of metals, large waste volumes, and observable releases, mining and smelting sites often receive high enough scores to be proposed for the NPL based on a single path-way. Neverthess, owners and operators can take steps to reduce the risk of being scored, and to reduce the potential for high scores.

In the wake of the Crandall Canyon mine disaster, the U.S. Congress asked the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) to study the safety of deep cover pillar recovery operations in the US. The legislation defined ?deep cover? to be greater than 1,500 ft, but NIOSH is also evaluating mines at depths greater than 1,000 ft when multiple seam interactions are encountered. By these definitions, there about 35 active mines that engage in deep cover pillar recovery, in the states of UT, CO, VA, WV, and KY. To date, NIOSH has documented ground conditions and ground control experience at nearly all of them. This paper provides an overview of current deep cover pillar recovery practice. The Stillwater Mining Co. is a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corp. The Stillwater Mine, located near Nye, MT, is the Western Hemisphere’s only primary platinum-palladium deposit. The mine began production of flotation concentrates in March 1987. In the fall of 1987, an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelting and oxygen-blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi-refined matte, or “white metal.” In the summer of 1990, the production smelter was brought on line. The record of the discovery and development of the Stillwater deposit, mine and concentrator has been summarized in several articles (White, 1987; Kennedy, 1987; and Hodges and Clifford, 1988). Similarly, the pilot campaign to test the feasibility of treating the flotation concentrates in an integrated smelting plant has been described (Hodges and Clifford, 1988; Matousek, et al., 1989; and Matousek and Whellock, 1990).

One-quarter of a century has passed since the "theory of regionalized variables" (geostatistics) was introduced by G. Matheron (1962, 1963) in France. Yet, only during the past decade has geostatistics found broad acceptance in the mining industry. Foremost among the reasons for this time lag was ignorance. The first English treatise on geostatistics was not written until Matheron (1971), and the first published text accessible to mining professionals did not appear until David (1977). Other significant reasons for the slow acceptance of geostatistics included the conservative nature of management in the 1970s minerals industry, and the fact that conventional ore reserve estimation performs reasonably well when confined to massive deposits of base metal and iron deposits having relatively low coefficients of variation in grades. In short, mine engineers and geologists were not willing to accept a new set of tools for problems that they did not see.

During the past decade, researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have worked to develop a novel flotation process for treating very fine particles. This process, which is now commonly known as [microbubble column flotation] (MCF), has been shown to be very effective in a number of applications related to fine coal processing. These applications include the retrofit of existing preparation plant circuits and the recovery of additional coal fines from refuse streams. In addition, work conducted under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Energy indicates that the MCF process is capable of producing superclean and ultraclean coals from many eastern U.S. coals. This paper describes some of the basic problems associated with fine particle flotation and the design and operational features of the MCF process used to minimize these problems. Also presented are the results of ongoing pilot- and field-testing programs.
