This paper presents a new dynamic method called Resonant Pile Test (HPT) for evaluating bearing capacity of pile. The basic conception of RPT is given in brief and the measuring system is also introduced. In addition, the influences of the magnitude of exciting force and of the mass of pile cap on test results are discussed. Finally, comparisons between values of bearing capacity given by RPT and by static load tests for a variety of pile types are listed.

Gravity separation techniques have been in use in the mineral sands industry for decades; from the Reichert cone to Wilfley tables, Wright sluices and the Kelsey Jig, all attempting that elusive perfect gravity separation. Just as the gravity separation industry evolved, Richards Bay Minerals also evolved in their use and approach to gravity separation. This paper discusses the history of gravity separation at Richards Bay Minerals and briefly comments on future developments. History Primary Concentration Richards Bay Mineral?s (RBM) first mining concentrator and mineral separation plant commenced operation in 1977 to process ilmenite, rutile and zircon bearing dunal deposits along the northern Natal coast. The orebody contained a greater proportion of non-valuable magnetic heavy mineral in the SG range of 3 to 4 compared to West Australian and Florida USA deposits, making mineral separation more difficult(1). The deposit was mined using two dredges feeding a floating 2000 tph concentrator. Concentrator feed was screened and fed to two four-stage circuits consisting of primary, scavenger, cleaner and recleaner Reichert cones [see Figure 1]. The primary units were fed at a rate of 80 tph and a density of 60% solids by weight.

RESEARCH has been defined as the link between the present and the future. Science, wonderful though its achievements may be, has but scratched the surface of the unknown. Research is directing its attention to winning new facts in order that their application to the processes of today may open up new sources of wealth for the common benefit. Two classes of research investigations are often recognized-fundamental and applied, but these classes merge into each other and it is often hard to distinguish one from the other. Fundamental research is carried out primarily to develop basic facts, but frequently these are found to have immediate economic value, while applied research, specifically aimed at economic values, often necessitates a preliminary fundamental investigation. Both are essential and both should proceed by scientific method. It is obvious in fuel technology that a knowledge of the physical and chemical constitution of the various coals is fundamental to their industrial utilization, and further, a knowledge of the way these coals react under different conditions of temperature, atmosphere, etc., is necessary in solving such problems as storage, combustion, carbonization, gasification, or con-version to liquid fuels. The wide range of coals, the complexity, of their constitution, and the many uses for coal, makes fuel research no simple subject but one with unending possibilities. The Research Council of Alberta, formerly known as the Scientific and Industrial Research Council of Alberta, was established in 1919, to promote the development and conservation of the natural resources of the Province. The work of the Council was arranged in six major divisions: Fuels; Geology; Road Materials; Soils; Natural Gas; and Forest Products. The office and laboratories are located in the University of Alberta. The Council was financed until the depression of 1933 by a separate vote of the Legislature, but since then has been continued, though on a much smaller scale, as one of the activities of the University. It might, however, be noted that although the Council is now in abeyance, a skeleton organization has been maintained so that it can be brought back to active service as soon as conditions warrant. Annual reports are still submitted to the Legislature. Funds have not been made available, however, for the publication of the last five reports.

The liquidus temperature and viscosity of a range of melter slags produced in South Africa were determined. Drop-quench experiments were carried out on the supplied plant samples to determine the liquidus temperature and phase relations at sub-liquidus temperatures. The temperature measurement range covered 1300°C to 1630°C. Results from these experiments show liquidus temperatures for the melter slags to be in excess of 1500ºC with the chromium containing spinel as the primary crystalline phase. At lower temperatures, an olivine or pyroxene phase co-existed with the spinel phase. The viscosity of the slags was determined over a temperature range of 1350 to 1550°C, under a controlled atmosphere. Results show two orders of magnitude variation in the viscosity (0.2 to 20Pa s) with strong effects of slag chemistry and temperature. Slags with lower SiO2and Cr2O3concentrations were more fluid. Slags with the lowest FeOx and highest SiO2concentrations were the most viscous. These observations are in accord with general behaviour of silicate slags. While the presence of a spinel phase may have an effect on the viscosity of the melter slags, results obtained to date indicate a much stronger effect due to the presence of an olivine or pyroxene phase at lower temperatures. The advance-and-relieve method benefits from lateral destressing associated with mining in laminated rocks and a high horizontal stress regime. This stress control method is based on measurements showing that occurrence of rock failure in the roof and floor of an entry (or caving of roof strata in a panel gob) results in redistribution of stresses in adjacent entries. By locating other entries within the shadow zone of the first entry (or gob), improvements in stability can be achieved. Numerical modeling proved useful in studying the basic mechanics of lateral relief while investigating the sensitivity of results to different geologic and mining parameters using controlled experiments. It was shown that failure of rocks near an entry results in redistribution of horizontal stress and shifting of the stress to higher horizons. Measurements from two mines are consistent in showing significant horizontal stress reductions in comparison with the far-field stress regime within the destressed zone. Although the far-field stress regime is very anisotropic, these measurements show near-equal secondary principal horizontal stresses, or perhaps a switch in orientation, as a result of destressing. Stress relief is achieved through lateral movement and relaxation of rocks along weak bedding planes toward adjacent caved zones (or softened zone). Because of cave geometry in the advancing panel, horizontal stress concentrations occur near the cave line both in front of the face and to the sides. The horizontal stress concentration reaches 1.7 times the far-field stress ahead of the face. This stress increase is significant and may cause structural damage in this zone benefiting from additional support. In the next advancing panel located within the shadow zone of the gob, horizontal stresses are significantly reduced in the roof (by 50%). Thus, the stability of future advancing panel can be improved through prudent layout designs and sequencing. The width of the relief zone is significantly influenced by the height of the softened (or cave zone) and rock mass properties.

Various light sources were evaluated for use in a fiber optic lighting system for mining machines. It was determined that a metal halide arc lamp was best because of its resistance to damage from shock and vibration and the high luminance of the arc. Measurements were made of the percent transmission of the ½ inch thick glass window and the fiber bundles, the total lumen output of the diffuser assembly with a known input and of the average surface luminance of the diffuser assembly. These data were then used to calculate the theoretical output of the system given an estimated input from the source. A prototype 55 watt, single-ended metal halide source was then developed. In order to provide greater efficacy and higher throughput through the fiber optic cables, a variation of the lamp with thallium iodide added to the fill was developed. The lamp was modified and a ballast was developed to allow it to hot restrike.

This article outlines the results of a computer simulation reproducing the transport of a mixture of air and methane following the outburst on 25 November, 2005 in transport gallery D-6, bed 409/4, at the ?Zofiówka? hard coal mine. Based on a mathematical model, numerical method and boundary conditions from the disturbance caused by the outburst, the Ventgraph system of computer simulation programs was adopted for the study. We performed a computer simulation of the influence exerted by the outburst on the propagation of the air and methane mixture, and compared the results of this simulation with those of the actual event as registered by sensors of the mine monitoring system. A validation of the model allowed us to present temporal changes in the concentration of methane and air along flow routes. The Alma, Degraff and other mines controlled by the Mon-Ark Mining Co. comprise one of the more important groups of zinc-lead mines in Christian County, Mo. The mines were first operated in .1857 and produced more than 5 million pounds of lead from rich, shallow ore deposits. Recent exploration and development led to the discovery of zinc sulfide ore at a depth of 165 to 214 feet in the northern part of the Alma mine. After examination of these mines in September 1942 by Bureau of Mines engineers, investigation of the extension -of the Alma mine and of the depth of mineralization at the other mines appeared justified in order to encourage the production of additional zinc and lead for war purposes. Twenty-nine churn-drill holes totaling 6.463 feet of bore were completed by the. Bureau from September 1943 to January 1944.

The autogenous grinding method has been progressively employed in mineral dressing plants during the last 15 years. The term has been used with somewhat different meanings (1), (2), (3). In this paper the author will use it in the most restricted way, for processes where run-of-mine ore (rock) in one step is reduced to a grind product by the action of the ore itself without any other grinding media present. The pebble grinding process where the major part of the ore enters the mill as finely crushed product which is ground further with selected coarse ore pieces acting as grinding media, is not considered autogenous grinding. Processes where a minor amount extraneous media as steel-balls is added to supplement an autogenous mill charge will be called semiautogenous. Other terms need also to be defined. "Mill charge" will be used about the active part of the mill content which performs the grinding, that is the steel balls in ball grinding and the coarse ore pieces in pebble and autogenous grinding. The interstitial nearly finished material is not included in the term "mill charge", and for the wet grinding operations is called the "mill pulp' The term "pebble" will be used for any rounded ore or rock piece in the mill charge whether it is an autogenous or a pebble grinding operation.

The brown-coal opencast mines in Germany's Rhineland have to cope with several problems. Predominant are densely populated areas with highly productive farmland, many railroads, highways, and rivers, as well as towns and farm settlements which have to be removed before or during the lifetime of a mine. Also the ground- water table has to be lowered to keep the deep opencast mines dry and stable. These problems urged a development towards deep opencast mines with powerful machines; the large material movement and the high coal production are the basis for the economic success in working the Rhenish brown-coal deposits. Up to now, bucket wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 100,000 m3 (130,000 cu yd) are in operation. Machines of twice this capacity are under construction. Corresponding to the excavators development, the stackers' capacity has to be increased too. The new stackers will reach a daily capacity of 240,000 m3 (310,000 cu yd). The haulage in the mine is performed by conveyor belt systems, which are arranged in such a manner that the belt lines meet at a belt switching point. Here the incoming lines may be connected to the outgoing ones so as to direct the material flow to the desired receiving stations. At the moment there are conveyor belts in operation with a width of 2.2 m (7.2 ft); the new belts will have a layout for 37,000 t/h (40,770 stph), the width of which amounts to 3.0 m (9.8 ft). All belts and driving stations on benches are shiftable.

"Since 1984, there have been 39 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM). In January 2015, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) finalized a regulation to require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines (MSHA, 2015). Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHAapproved proximity detection systems are commercially available.NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system (Schiffbauer, 2002) and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs (DuCarme et al. 2013; Jobes et al. 2012; Carr, DuCarme et al. 2013 and Carr, Li et al. 2013). In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate (Li, Carr et al. 2013 and Li, Jobes et al. 2012) and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators (Carr et al. 2010 and Jobes, et al. 2012).To evaluate the performance of proximity detection systems implemented in industry, NIOSH researchers conducted tests in 2013 on three systems installed on CMMs at three underground mines in Illinois and West Virginia. The results of these tests indicated that, while generally consistent performance was observed, there were opportunities for improving performance. These results were presented at the 2014 SME Annual Meeting (Carr, Lutz, et al. 2014). Since that time, second-generation systems have become available to the industry and are becoming more commonly used.Beginning in early 2014, NIOSH researchers conducted underground testing of these secondgeneration proximity detection systems installed on CMMs. Five tests were conducted on four installations of second-generation proximity detection systems, with one installation being tested twice. The tests were conducted at mines located in Illinois, Virginia and Kentucky with seam heights ranging from 137 cm (54 in.) to 213 cm (84 in.). These tests were conducted using the same test protocol used during first-generation testing, which is summarized in the following section."

Large structural faults create serious ground control hazards, as well as adversely affect coal mineproduction. Two faults related to the Pine Mountain overthrust sheet in Buchanan County, VA, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their effect on ground control and to develop recognition criteria for prediction. Five underground mines encountering these faults were visited and mapped for structural information. This information, along with surface mapping, indicated that Pistol Gap and Keen Mountain Faults show right-lateral, strike-slip faulting and bedding planes slippage, which can be projected linearly and vertically. These fault zones are up to 200 ft wide, with coalbed offsets up to 18 ft vertically, coalbed swags (depressions) up to 15 ft, and roof falls up to 20 ft high. Recognition criteria include bedding plane slips, coalbed offsets, fault gouge, coalbed swag (depressions or synclines), and disturbed bedding. These recognition criteria will help an informed operator realize that many sudden coalbed discontinuities are related to larger geologic events (in this case thrust faulting) and can be projected linearly and vertically. Ground control strategies include mine designs that minimize fault exposure. Mining plans can be adjusted based on type and extent of fault movement.

Neste trabalho, pela primeira vez, o sistema cerâmico Al2O3-Nb2O5-LiF teve suas propriedades mecânicas investigadas. Foram investigadas diferentes composições, em peso, para o composto (Al2O3–4%Nb2O5)–nLiF, com n variando entre 0 e 1,50%, a três temperaturas de sinterização diferentes (1300, 1350 e 1400 ºC). Como caracterização mecânica, avaliou-se a microdureza Vickers para todas as composições. A adição de LiF que apresentou os maiores valores de densificação teve seus módulos de Young e de cisalhamento, e as velocidades de ondas elásticas determinadas. Os resultados mostraram que todas as adições de LiF elevaram a microdureza do composto Al2O3–4%Nb2O5. Este fato pode estar relacionado com a densificação e fases obtidas após a sinterização. A adição de 0,5% de LiF ao composto cerâmico Al2O3-4% Nb2O5, promovendo maior densificação, quando sinterizado a 1300 ºC obteve valores de propriedades elásticas comparáveis aos obtidos por Al2O3–4%Nb2O5 sem LiF, sinterizado a 1400 ºC. Os resultados relevaram ainda uma coerente correlação entre dureza, módulo de elasticidade e densificação. Dessa forma, a adição de fluoreto de lítio ao sistema cerâmico alumina-nióbia possibilitou a redução em pelo menos 100 ºC na temperatura de sinterização, com propriedades mecânicas comparáveis.

Various controlled and ambient tests were undertaken to evaluate the performance of a variety of digital heat stress monitors, psychrometers and simpler temperature/relative humidity data loggers that measure, or determine, such parameters as: dry-bulb, natural wet-bulb, psychrometric wet-bulb and globe temperatures. In this comparison, funded by the Deep Mining Research Consortium, it has been found that all the instruments can competently measure dry-bulb temperature but the accuracy of other sensors could introduce significant uncertainty. For example the quality of relative humidity sensors and failure to correct for the barometric pressure difference in deep mines, directly impacts upon the calculation of psychrometric wet-bulb. The comparison has shown that the response of dry-bulb and globe temperature sensors can vary widely under different radiant heat conditions; however this would be negligible in most mines. Of more concern is the differing performance of the natural-wet bulb sensors especially at low relative humidity and low air velocity. Furthermore, from these tests and the currently available theory it was not possible to determine if any of the natural-wet bulb instruments measured that value correctly or validate any relationship between psychrometric and natural wet-bulb temperature at low air speeds where their difference is greatest. Consequently the uninformed use of some of the commercially available environmental heat stress monitors or derivations from other instruments could provide erroneous results affecting the work load category that can be accommodated or the rest ratio regime required.

Results of a long-term program of electrical parameter measurement in under-ground coal mine working sections, performed by The Pennsylvania State University under U. S. Bureau of Mines sponsorship, are utilized as the basis for an analysis of the electrical energy requirements during operation. A model section is hypothesized, developed from the average or most representative characteristics as determined from tabulations of the measurements. Performance factors of the model section's machine complement are then analyzed, particularly with regard to the energy required per ton of raw coal cut and delivered from the section. Results are given in kilowatt-hours per ton.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.
