This report describes how a limited number of preliminary exploration drill-hole assays from a mineral deposit can be used to design grid spacing that is both economic and efficient for subsequent evaluation drilling of that deposit. Relationships between desired precision of the estimate of grade of ore and drilling cost are used to determine the economic drill-hole spacing. The statistical concept of precision in estimating grade of ore is used to determine the efficient drill-hole spacing. Assay data from approximately 50 known copper deposits were studied, and the relationships of the statistical parameters of these deposits were computed. Drilling requirements for various precisions of the estimates of grade of ore were computed for some of these known deposits to serve as guides for drilling future copper deposits. The effect of various geologic factors on the trend in grade of ore and, therefore, on the drilling requirements is shown for certain deposits.

The dynamic response of a thin aluminum plate subjected to both shallow and deeper buried blast loading was studied. Using a combination of high speed stereo-vision and three dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC), sequential stereo images acquired every 38.25µs during blast loading were analyzed to determine full-field deformations and plate motions (displacements, velocities and accelerations, effective surface strain and effective surface strain rate). Measurements indicate that the initial sheet deformation was highly localized for both shallow and deeper blast events, with extremely high velocity and acceleration values recorded during the earliest stages of impact loading. Full field strain and strain rate data indicate that well defined strain and strain rate “maxima” are created in the plate, with the potential of affecting the dynamic plate behavior as well as it local failure.

Surface subsidence is an inevitable consequence of many underground mining operations and has been recognized as such since the fifteenth century. Damage resulting from this phenomenon ranges from simple land settlement to severe structural damage to buildings and has been witnessed in rural (Illinois, Colorado, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania) as well as in urban areas (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Wyoming). In fact, it is estimated that over 2 million acres of land across the United States have been affected by mining subsidence, of which 140,000 acres are in urban areas (Singh, 1978; Johnson and Miller, 1979). Further, it is estimated that during the next twenty years an additional 1.5 to 2.4 million acres of land will also be affected by mining. Subsidence prevention is not feasible, at least under the existing technologic and economic constraints of underground coal mining. Foreign experience has demonstrated, however, that subsidence can be successfully controlled if an accurate method of predicting ground movements is available. Such techniques have been developed in many coalfields, where it is currently accepted that subsidence can be predicted within ± 20 percent of the actual values. Furthermore, such movements can be translated into anticipated structural failures using established damage criteria, thus enabling appropriate precautionary measures to be implemented.

The field data gathered as part of the measurements described in Volumes I and II were re-analyzed in the low frequency regime (.1 Hz to 1 Hz) where motion sickness normally occurs. These data were compared co the international standard ?ISO 2631 Addendum 2: Evaluation of exposure to whole body z-axis vertical vibration in the frequency range 0.1 to 1.0 Hz." For both underground mining machines and surface mining machines the results showed that one would not expect motion sickness to .be a severe problem. New field data were gathered on the vibration reduction performance of various seat designs found on surface coal mining machines. The vibration during normal operation was measured on the seat using the standard seat pad accelerometer package described in the previous two volumes and simultaneously on the floor of the machine at the base of the seat. Preliminary indications are that the so-called high performance seats used for operator vibration reduction do not offer significant improvement over conventional seats.

Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.

Alkaline leaching with sodium carbonate solution adjusted to pH 9·5 to 10·0 preferentially dissolves thorium from a mixture of rare earth and thorium hydroxides. Rare earth sodium carbonates form in the alkaline leaching stage.These are converted to rare earth oxides for use as optical and ophthalmic polishing agents. Quadrivalent cerium is extracted under similar alkaline leaching conditions.INTRODUCTIONAustralia has made significant contributions to mineral chemistry and mineral dressing. As often happens with an industrially immature country, research investigations often outstrip the ability or desire of commerce to exploit them. It is wrong to think exclusively in terms of export of raw materials. Imagination assists in developing world trends. The chemical utilization of mineral sands has interested a group of investigators, chiefly at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.) and, more recently, in the mining industry itself. From an international point of view the highlight of this work was Newnham's (1960) process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium. Earlier work at C.S.I.R.O. investigated the chlorination of rutile, zircon, and monazite. Assuming that titanium tetrachloride would be available in large quantities in the post war years, extensive work was done by Kraitzer, McTaggart, and Winter (1948) on organic compounds of titanium. This work led to the development of heat resistant paints, plastic compositions, and improved organic protective coatings that predated overseas work by up to seven years. (Post, Shiihara and Schwartz, 1961; Anon, 1955). Contributions were made to the production of refractory hard metals (Kraitzer, 1949; Kraitzer and Newnham, 1956). Pilkington and Wylie (1947) and Urie (1947) investigated the production of rare earths from monazite by an acid process.

The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Butte mine was examined, surveyed and mapped (fig. 1) by a Bureau of Mines engineer in January 1944. As a result, it was decided to diamond-drill the deposit, using Bureau of Mines equipment, and drilling was started October 14, 1944, under the supervision of two Bureau engineers, and stopped April 5, 1945. Nine holes were drilled for a total of 1,274 feet, not including 48 feet on a lost hole. Figures 2 and 3 are sections at AA' and BB' of figures 1, and show the adjusted average assays of drill-hole samples. Figures 4 and 5 are separate maps of holes 4 and 6, respectively.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil ,to be extracted and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled, had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent, interest additional during the life of the property. The initial procedure consisted in making a general reconnaissance of the entire district in which the property was located and determining the lithological and structural conditions underlying the area. Context ? Community engagement has become an increasingly significant and challenging part of mineral exploration and mine development; indeed, opposition from communities proximate to a proposed mine site has been known to derail technologically- and financially-sound projects. ? These cases suggest that mining firms need to better understand how to engage constructively with local communities in the pursuit of their claims. ? While a range of publications exist promoting various community engagement strategies, these recommendations, when viewed as a whole, are disjointed and largely untested in real development contexts. Aims of Presentation 1. Synthesize industry, NGO, government and academic publications focused on community engagement best practice in order to highlight those practices that are most commonly recommended. 2. Review the (Canadian) mining industry?s experience with some of these strategies based on existing case material in order to identify the extent to which commonly prescribed strategies are used and validated in practice.

About 24 per cent of our total production of bituminous coal is used in industrial power plants. As regards fuel conservation, therefore, the recovery of unburned fuel from furnace refuse presents interesting possibilities. Considerable attention has been given to this problem in the past, but because of the comparatively low initial cost of power plant fuel in the pre-war period little progress, has been made in this direction in the United States. Because of the higher price of coal in Europe more attention has there been given to the problem. In Germany a process has been developed for separating unburned coal in refuse by using an electromagnetic separator In the United States the use of mechanical stokers enabled low-priced screenings of high ash content to be used, so that even with relatively high percentages of combustible material remaining in the refuse, the loss in money is not excessive. If the price of screenings returns to the pre-war level around $1.00 per ton the process proposed here will probably not be especially interesting, except where the freight charges are very high. However, if the price of delivered coal continues high, such a process should result in considerable saving. The cost of continuous operation of such a refuse treating plant should not exceed 75 cents per ton of fuel recovered.

A computer-assisted resources and sedimentological study of the Andersonville, Georgia kaolin-bauxite district was begun in 1975 under a grant from the Office of Mineral Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey (Grant # 14-08-1110-G-173). A preliminary report on the kaolin and bauxite resources of the district has been placed on open file at the U.S.G.S. in Reston, Virginia; the Georgia-Geological Survey in Atlanta, Georgia; and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. In addition to a resources estimate, the objectives include the determination of the mineralogical variation, sedimentological parameters, and paleogeographic patterns of the deposition of the high alumina materials and their associated sediments. In the process of compiling data for the resources estimate, isopach maps were developed that provide information as to the shape, size, and distribution of the kaolin deposits and the kaolinitic sediments that contain them. These or similar maps developed for other districts can be useful exploration tools.

When discussing stock market investments, a company's performance is important. But so is the financial community's perception of that performance. To be sure, a good product or service, coupled with sound manage¬ment, remains important but is no longer enough. How stock analysts view a company's performance has become equally important. A major task of a mining company's investor relations officer, then, is to build and maintain a positive perception of the company to mining analysts throughout the world. That's a tough assignment in any market. The subject here, though, is gold. And, with its weakened price, gold companies must work harder to convince analysts their company is still a good investment. The analyst, on the other hand, must see through the corporate hype and decide whether it's worth recommending to clients as an investment. No simple task, either. Annual reports, 10-K forms, and quarterly reports only tell part of the mining company's story. Site visits, complete with discussions (sometimes interrogations) with a mine's principals, oftentimes tell an analyst more about a company's investment potential than the annual or quarterly report. So it was that three of the nation's major gold companies arranged a three-day tour of their gold operations in Nevada for a group of 22 analysts and a pair of mining industry scribes. The analysts represented investment houses the US, Canada, and England. The host companies and mines visited included FMC Gold's Paradise Peak mine, Amax Gold's Sleeper and Wind Mountain mines, and Battle Mountain Gold's Surprise and Fortitude mines.

The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. In eastern China, most of the copper skarn deposits occur in folded troughs which are controlled by the EW-trending faulted fold systems (the Pal-Asian geotectonic domain), and the NNE-trending rift or fault zones (the Marginal-Pacific geotectonic domain), particularly the later. From the north to the south, there are four troughs hosting the main copper skarn deposits in eastern China: the Yanliao Trough, the Yangzi River Trough, The Qiantang-Yuanshui Trough and the Zichen Trough. There are more than 30 copper skarn deposits in eastern China, and ore reserves of each deposit are between 30 to 100 Mt with average grades over 1% Cu.    Most of the large copper skarn deposit-related intrusions are Mesozoic in age (170 to 100 Ma) and were emplaced during the Yanshanian Movement. Outwards from the intrusion bodies, both the skarn alteration and mineralisation show certain patterns of zonation. Mineral assemblages indicate a relatively high oxidisation state during metasomatic alteration and mineralisation. Sulphur isotopic work indicates that most d34S values of the sulphides are between ~4 to 3ë suggesting a common magmatic sulphur source. Fluid inclusion and oxygen isotopic studies suggest that early-stage fluid shows magma-related fluid characteristics although meteoric water was involved during late-stage alteration.

This paper highlights the electric power situation in Canada, and introduces brief explanation of the salient differences between electrical practice in the United States and Canada. The availability of bask energy in the two countries is touched on, also the hydro versus thermal outlook as applying to Canada. De-v2lopment of thermal-electric power is dealt with in some detail, followed by Canada's thermal-electric power requirements, present and future. The fuel requirements for steam-electric generating plant are assessed on the basis of a survey recently made, and the location and size of the major thermal plant operations are given. Fuel contractual obligations on the part ?of suppliers and consumers are mentioned. Finally, an opinion is expressed in regard to the types of f.uel in ?demand on a regional basis with emphasis on the need for coal in the several areas dealt with.
