Many low sulphidation epizonal gold and zinc-lead vein deposits within magmatic arcs are situated on basement highs, and post-date both the main volcanic episode and porphyry copper (gold) mineralisation. These features are best explained by emplacement of a flat batholith a few kilometres beneath each mineral district, as recently demonstrated by geophysical data in the Baia Mare district of Romania. The batholith provides heat for the hydrothermal system, and results in extensional faulting both through up-doming of the overlying rocks, and in some arcs through incipient collapse of the thermally weakened crust under regional extensional stress. More water-rich magmas emplaced at greater depths could explain some deep epizonal and mesothermal gold deposits situated outside magmatic arcs.

Para ello, se desarrolló un trabajo a nivel de laboratorio, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios. Posteriormente se pasó al nivel piloto donde a través de la experimentación se utilizó el relave en diferentes concentraciones para la producción agrícola y forestal, reafirmando los resultados en las mejoras de la productividad en suelos ácidos.

A better understanding of the hydrogeology within mine waste rock and cover systems is essential for the quantification, prediction and prevention of metals loading to the environment surrounding waste rock piles. The effect of surface condition on the internal flow mechanisms within an intermediate-scale constructed waste rock pile is being investigated at the Cluff Lake Mine, Saskatchewan. Changes in the water balance, the outflow distribution and water residence time have been observed in the waste rock pile following successive modifications of the surface condition. The three year old, run of mine, free-dumped surface was ripped to a depth of 30 cm to 40 cm, and levelled in October of 2001. In August 2002, a 10 cm to 15 cm cover of compacted waste rock was placed on the pile. Outflow, precipitation and run-off data collected during natural and artificial rainfall events have been used to quantify the maximum infiltration rate, and the spatial pattern of discharge and cumulative volume of water that infiltrated into the waste rock under each surface condition. Infiltration data together with the outflow data provide a basis to address the residence time of water within waste rock and the dominant flow mechanisms for different surface conditions. With a free dump surface spatially distinct wetting fronts are observed at the base of the pile that vary in flow rate by an order of magnitude (measured at a 2 m by 2 m scale) and in time by up to a week. Following ripping and levelling, similar cumulative outflows were observed, but the magnitude and arrival time of wetting fronts changed across the pile. A decrease in outflow volume, a decrease in infiltration volume, a two-fold increase in the response time of wetting fronts and a more spatially uniform distribution was observed following placement of the compacted surface layer. Based on preliminary data, the internal structure appears to be the dominant factor controlling outflow variability.

ACTIVE participation by the United States in the war acted as a stimulant on the Annual Institute Meeting in New York rather than a retardant as feared. Attendance was about 10 per cent under the all-time high reached last year, but considering the number of men who could not possibly come because of active military service and the additional number who are devoting their whole time and effort to turning out vital war materials, the registration was really greater than might have been expected. But all in all the Institute put on a show that taxed the capacity of the Engineering Societies Building as well as the capacity of the visitors to find time to attend everything that promised to be of interest.

Conway’s Law states that unless we intentionally design automation tools around what we need, we will simply replicate our existing processes. While we may achieve some savings this way, there is an opportunity for greater benefits if we re-imagine the way we, as an industry, perform design. This paper examines current technology and shows how even small departures from merely encoding what we currently do could reap significant benefits. From these examples a framework is developed for a new and innovative approach tvo automation that will allow us to design more quickly, to a higher quality, and communicate outcomes more effectively.

Ore-pass hazards are a significant safety problem in US underground metal mines. From 1975 to 1995, nearly 75% of injuries during pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes were related to falls of broken rock or the use of hand tools. Risk assessment methods are being used to identify the most probable causes of ore-pass failures and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning or safety reduction. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in the laboratory and by field testing, with data from test ore passes compared with mine data to characterise true system behaviour. Computer modelling using closed-form solutions, finite element analysis and a newly developed particle flow code are being use to predict loads from ore and waste flow and impact. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts may be much less than expected, as a result of damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics

T. ROSENQVIST*—It is a pleasure to see the excellent way in which the experimental part of this work has been handled. There seems to be little doubt that the distribution data obtained corresponds most closely to thermodynamic equilibrium under the prevailing reducing conditions, namely equilibrium with graphite and one atmosphere CO pressure. The desulphurization curves in Fig 10 show the same general feature as the curves given by Holbrook and Joseph, but the distribution ratios are from 20 to 40 times greater—undoubtedly due to a closer approach to true equilibrium. In the theoretical discussion, the authors calculate a theoretical distribution (S) ration -jg-. which they find to be about 50 times greater than the experimental. The deviation is so great that the basis for their calculation needs a more thorough examination. The authors base their thermodynamic calculation on free energy expressions where diluted solutions of FeS and CaS are used as standard states. (The activity coefficient in diluted solutions is taken to equal unity.) Such a standard state will change when the nature of the solvent is changed. Taking the free energy of the reaction [FeS] ? (FeS), Eq 2, which is derived from the distribution of sulphur between an iron and a FeO-melt, it is very unlikely that the free energy of this reaction will be the same for a distribution between pig iron and a calcium silicate slag. Therefore a more fundamental basis for the thermodyuamic calculations seems needed, where all thermodynamic equations are referred to unambiguously defined standard states. The most natural standard states for CaO and CaS are the pure solid substances at the same temperature. As standard state for sulphur in iron, pure liquid FeS can be used. This rules out Eq 2 [FeS] ;=s (FeS) because ?F° = 0. The standard equation will then be: FeS, + CaO6 + Cgraph ?Fei + CaS8 + CO. vFo1773 = 25,000 cal It would be more universal and also simpler to refer the escaping tendency of sulphur in liquid iron to the corresponding H2S/H2 ratio which can readily be determined experimentally. As standard state a gas mixture H2S/H2 = 1/1 can be used. (This corresponds at the temperature of liquid iron closely to one atmosphere S2 vapor.) Thus the standard equation for the sulphur reaction can be formulated as follows: H2S0 + CaO3 + Cgraph ?H2o + CaS8 + COg The standard free energy of this reaction has been calculated from the best available data to AF°m3 = —35,000 cal. This gives for the equilibrium constant at 1500°C Now, the solubility of CaS in blast furnace slags has been determined by McCafferey and Oesterle* and corresponds at 1500°C to about 10 pet S (varying somewhat with the composition of the slag.) If the activity of CaS is assumed linear between 0-10 pet as curve 1, (see Fig 11), then acaO = 0.1 (S); (S) being wt. pet sulphur in the slag. For a diluted solution of sulphur in an iron melt saturated with carbon, the ratio H2S/H2 is, according to Kitchener, Bockris and Liberman,f about 0.01 [S], [S] being wt. pet sulphur in iron. Substituting these values in the expression for Kp we find The value 2.103 is only 4 times greater than the experimental coefficient found by Hatch and Chipman, but the value is very sensitive to a small error in AF°. A better agreement with the experimental distribution coefficient can be obtained if one assumes the activity of CaS to run like curve 2 (Fig 11). This (S) will give a lower theoretical W, value, a value which varies with (S) exactly as Hatch and Chipman learned. Such a shape of the activity curve, which corresponds to a positive deviation from Raoult's law, is actually to be expected from the fact that liquid silicate and sulphide phases usually show incomplete miscibility. A closer agreement between experimental and theoretical data can not be expected before we have more complete data for the individual activities of CaS and CaO in the slag. The activities acaS and Ocao referred to the solid phases as standard states, are exact defined quantities contrary to the somewhat undefined expression "free lime," and they are independent of any theory for the constitution of liquid slag. J. CHIPMAN (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Mr. Rosenqvist for his very interesting and useful thermodynamic addition. Curve 2 of his figure offers the needed basis for explaining the increase in the ratio (S)/[S] with increasing sulphur content. Attention is called to an error in the printed paper: Fig 2 and 3 are reversed. M. TENENBAUM*—In the figures showing the relationship between excess base and sulphur distribution (Fig 6, 7 and 9) the slope of the curve tapers off in the negative basicity range. Somewhat the same thing is observed with open hearth slags. In that case, the fact that some sulphur distribution between slag and metal is obtained with negative basicity is interpreted as indicating some dissociation of the lime silicate compounds whose existence in oxidizing basic slags has been used to explain various observed phenomena with regard to other slag-metal reactions. In the case of the blast furnace slags, the reduced slope of the sulphur distribution curve with decreasing excess base is attributed to the amphoteric effect of alumina. Has the possibility of other explanations been investigated ?

In 2013 the Mopani Copper Mine Mufulira plant in Zambia embarked on a project that was aimed at improving concentrator recoveries. The project commenced with the automation of the milling and flotation circuits. This involved the installation of new instrumentation, namely measurement devices and actuators, and the connection of these to new programmable logic controllers (PLCs).The infrastructure changes were followed by the implementation of basic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers on the PLCs. Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interfaces were also implemented to allow for switching between controller modes, inputting of setpoint variables and to provide a visual display for process monitoring. The final phase of the project involved the installation and commissioning of advanced process control (APC) solutions on the milling and flotation circuits. This work was carried out by Mintek over 21 on-site days. The APC solutions included the MillStar and FloatStar suites of advanced controllers.The MillStar control suite focused on stabilising the mill feed and mill discharge on the two primary mills as well as the flotation circuit feed. Mintek’s CyLas instruments, which provide a measurement of the hydrocyclone underflow angle, were also installed. The measurements were incorporated into the discharge stabilisation control on both milling circuits. The FloatStar level stabiliser controller provided flotation cell pulp level control on fourteen cells, including two columns.Performance tests showed that the Mintek APC system stabilised the mill feed and mill discharge while ensuring the process remained within operational constraints. The MillStar control system utilised the CyLas instrument to prevent roping on the hydrocyclone underflow. This was not always achieved under normal operation. Additionally, the flotation section was stabilised as a result of improved level control by the FloatStar control system.Performance comparisons showed that the Mintek control system improved the operation of the milling and flotation circuits resulting in a greater copper recovery.CITATION:Naidoo, A, De Gee, B E and Viviers, N, 2014. This Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties (the “CIMVAL Code”) is the result of a review more than a decade after the release in 2003 of the “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” (the "2003 Standards"). The purpose of the review is to update the 2003 Standards to reflect domestic valuation, international valuation, and regulatory developments. The CIMVAL Code was adopted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (the "CIM") Council on November 29, 2019. The CIMVAL Code supersedes the 2003 Standards. The 2003 Standards were dated February 2003 and were adopted by the CIM Council on March 9, 2003 as the first comprehensive set of standards for Valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The 2003 Standards followed recommendations of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission, where in its Final Report (January 1999), the CIM was specifically asked to form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on standards for the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties ("CIMVAL") was created on May 5, 1999 with the mandate to recommend standards and guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general. The CIMVAL Code is limited to the Valuation of Mineral Properties (including any interests therein) and does not cover valuation of corporations or other entities that hold Mineral Properties as assets. The CIMVAL Code does not cover petroleum and related assets. CIMVAL recommends that the CIMVAL Code be followed for all Valuations of Mineral Properties, including those required by securities administrators and stock exchanges. However, when a Valuation is required under the applicable rules of securities administrators or stock exchanges, such rules prevail to the extent of any inconsistency.

The Inspiration ore body was discovered in 1904, but a 50 -ton mill which was installed to treat the disseminated copper ore promptly failed. The original Inspiration Company then gave way to another, backed by W. B. Thompson, which found 40 million tons of ore. Control then passed to Anaconda and Dr. Louis Ricketts took charge as consulting engineer. He abandoned the mill which had been partially built (to the horror of the stockholders, according to Ira Joralemon) and spent a year and a million dollars experimenting with flotation. The first large copper flotation plant was then built and recovered 50% more copper than had previous gravity mills. It, of course, was highly successful and became the forerunner of modern flotation plants. Inspiration is distinctive as the first fully integrated copper operation in the United States. Three open pits supply sulfide ore to the concentrator and mixed oxide and sulfide ore to a vat leaching and electrowinning operation with leached ore also being sent to the concentrator. In addition, dump leaching supplies pregnant solution for scrap iron precipitation. Inspiration has recently constructed an electric furnace smelter and also operates a continuous casting and rod plant. The new primary 54 in. by 74 in. crusher was completed in May of 1972 and replaced an older unit which was in the way of the open pit development. It is of an unusual circular silo design, which permits dumping 0 from two positions at 90 from each other. One dumping position is in line with the spider, while the other one is at right angles to it. A box girder splitter bar hung from the dump pocket slopes downward from the second dump point, across the spider cap, and rests on the pocket bottom. This splitter was not installed to protect the spider but was to aid in distributing wet ore being dumped from that position to both sides of the spider. Any large amount of wet ore delivered to one side of the spider would pack in the crusher cavity. The round front wall of the 18 ft (5.5 m) deep pocket is unlined except for light steel protection at the top, while the straight back wall is lined with vertically positioned railroad rails. Water for dust suppression is sprayed into the pocket through a cluster of 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) nozzles at the back of the pocket. About 5 gpm (19 lpm) of water are mixed with 90 psi (620 kPa) air upstream of the nozzles to produce a fog which is effective in dust control. The 54 in. At its most basic level, minerals project management may be broken down into a series of logical chronological phases, described in this paper as: exploration, discovery; scoping and pre-feasibility; feasibility and approval; project financing and commissioning; operation; expansion and closure. Each phase has its own peculiarities and challenges, any one of which can potentially upset the forward progress of a minerals project.Reference is made to each of these project phases based on the authorÆs many years of first-hand experience, in an attempt to identify issues within the project management spectrum where additional caution may be warranted. Left un-addressed, these issues can cause undue delays in the project timeline, ultimately delaying approval at significant project cost.Finally, reference is made to the Mine ManagerÆs Handbook recently published by the AusIMM which is an excellent project management resource, considered to be very relevant for minerals treatment plant managers, whether the context be constructing, operating, expanding or shutting down.CITATION:Dunlop, J S, 2013. The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

This paper deals with materials of construction and problems encountered and overcome in leaching and filtration of oxidized sulphuric acid slurry in the Port Radium mill after eight years of operation. The slurry is characterized by a high calcium sulphate content as well as a high chloride level under oxidized conditions, both of which affected initial design and subsequent changes. Leach agitation tanks are of wood with a mild steel superstructure and stainless steel agitator and moving parts below solution level. Electro-polished 316 stainless steel cooling coils are used for temperature control of the slurry. The string filters are of the Oliver type with wood decking. Extensive use is made of wood, Linatex lined mild steel and stainless steel for the slurry handling. When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. The proposed 1.83km long twin bore A3 Hindhead road tunnel planned for contruction in 2008 is being delivered under a Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunneling medium is a ‘soft rock’ sandstone for which there was little previous tunneling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240m long portal section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels, and the innovation included in the ‘permanent’ primary lining design.

"This paper describes the development of an automated, 70-ton capacity, underground electric trolley truck at Inco Ltd. The purpose of the project is to provide a high capacity and high productivity haulage system to suit continuous loader applications in existing mining horizons where conveyor belt application is not immediately practical. IntroductionWith the start o f a program by Inco in mid-1983 to develop a continuous loader for bulk mining of our hardrock orebodies, the need for a rapid ore transportation system was recognized to match the increased extraction rates planned. Two methods were investigated, truck haulage and conveyor belt. As a result, a conveyor belt system has since been designed and installed with a continuous loader at Stobie Mine and an electric truck has been designed, fabricated and assembled, with shop testing underway. This paper deal s with the latter project. BackgroundMany existing mining horizons which could utilize continuous loaders do not have the straight runs required for conveyor belts. In these situations, truck haulage would be the only alternative of the other transportation methods that would be practical. In order to match the high productivity potential of the continuous loader, however, a more efficient trucking system is required than would be available with conventional diesel powered trucks or with electric truck designs commercially available, or under development. A higher capacity truck and an automated operation is necessary so that the application of additional units to suit increasing haulage distances matches loader output without reducing over-all productivity because of the need for additional operators.A first effort to work with a major electrical manufacturer was unsuccessful and resulted in a project delay of almost one year. In November 1984, an investigation into the concept was reinstigated with UTDC, and an agreement to start design was reached in April 1985."

THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to supply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. A detailed discussion of open-hearth fuels is not attempted here, but certain factors peculiar to their application to this type of process are briefly indicated on the following pages. Very often an open-hearth shop is forced by economic factors to use a fuel to which its furnaces are not very well adapted, because the general fuel-allocation scheme for the works as a whole seems to demand it. Often a variable marginal supply of coke-oven gas or tar must be consumed by the open hearth, together with another fuel such as producer gas, natural gas, or oil, to fill out total requirements.
