"In an attempt to address the issue of rising labour costs, and to improve productivity, a laser-based system to guide underground LHDs and trucks has been developed. This comprehensive system is known as the Opti-Trak system.Essentially, the vehicle is equipped with front and rear-mounted lasers which scan a reference strip mounted on the drift back. The vehicle follows this reference strip and in addition, based on reflective bar codes mounted beside the reference strip, initiates certain functions (i.e. dump cycle, speed change, brake check, etc.). Any programming that is drift-specific is handled by the positioning of the reference strips and bar codes. Consequently, the vehicle can easily travel to many different haulageways or branches, providing the reference strip and bar codes are in place.The advantages of this system are an immediate elimination of haulage operator costs and an increase in available hauling time to 7 hours out of an 8-hour shift as compared to the typical 5Y2 out of 8 hours that a manned haulage system offers.This paper describes the Opti-Trak system and the benefits to be realized from automation of mine haulage requirements."

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. Crushed ore is withdrawn by 12 constant speed conveyor belts; each discharges 500 t of crushed taconite into a dry cobbing machine. Each machine consists of a 3-m-long riffle splitter and two vari-

"When certain gold ores containing pyrite, graphite, humates and fumates or other organic compounds which are possibly adsorbed on clay minerals are treated with aqueous solution of alkali metal cyanide, the aurocyanide complex which forms is adsorbed by these ""pregrobbing"" species in the ore. Dissolution of gold proceeds until chemical equilibrium is attained between the cyanide complex adsorbed by the ore and in solution.Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) may be used to decrease the adsorptive activity of the prerobbing species in the ore. It has successfully improved recovery at Holt-McDermott Mine and is highly biodegradable.INTRODUCTION Precious metal-bearing ores containing preg-robbing species are poorly amenable to standard cyanidation techniques. The ""preg-robbing"" impurities with which they are associated tend to adsorb the gold cyanide complexes and carry them through the circuit to the tailings. Also, gold may be associated with these impurities in the ore and not be leached by the cyanide complexing agents used in conventional cyanidation techniques.Methods for dealing with the problem of preg-robbinq impurities in gold ores are:Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), in which granular activated carbon is added to compete with preg-robbing species for the gold cyanide complexes. This process can improve gold recovery in mildly preg-robbing ores especially when fine carbons with very high activities are used. However, with severely graphitic ore, the carbon associated with the rock may outperform the granular activated charcoal.Chemical Oxidation, in which the ore is subjected to preliminary chemical oxidation techniques to oxidize carbonaceous materials using such diverse reagents including ozone, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorates and oxygen prior to subjecting the oxidized ore to standard cyanidation treatment to extract gold. This is generally a costly method and will not prove economical on a low-grade ore."

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. Many sciences and techniques are combined in aerial survey operations. I was delighted to be invited to be patron of this Joint Conference, but the challenging task you have set yourselves, and your speakers' depth of expertise, deny anyone, even the patron, the opportunity to be patronizing. Australia's history has been inextricably linked with the fortunes of our great mining industry. That link will remain. Just as the gold rushes of the last century, and the discoveries at Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill changed the lives of generations, so the more recent development activity in iron ore, bauxite, nickel, coal, and uranium are having a significant impact on the lives of Australians today. The minerals industry has contributed to Australia's jobs and prosperity. Mining is not free of problems, but so long as safeguards are strong and appropriate the net benefits the mining industry brings Australia will continue to be enormous. We rely on our mining industry to find, prove, develop and sell our minerals profitably, and my Government is committed to maintaining a healthy mining industry. In the past year there have been positive signs of a resurgence in exploration and development. The North-West Shelf ventures are spending $50 million on a feasibility study to work out the extent of future investment in that project; exploration expenditure for minerals other than petroleum increased by 34 per cent in 1976-77 to $134 million; petroleum exploration increased dramatically last year almost doubling to $94 million-this year it is projected to reach $125 million.

In any discussion on the subject of mine-safety, it is well to honestly face the fact at the outset that mining is a hazardous occupation and that certain inherent dangers attach to the work, which, in spite of the greatest vigilance on the part of everyone concerned, will from time to time exact their toll of in jury or death from the underground worker. Great progress has been made of late years in narrowing down the range of these necessary risks, and, illustrative of what can be done along these lines by concerted effort, it is pleasing to read from time to time of large operating mines running for weeks, months, a year or more, without a single lost-time accident. To achieve any results in the work of accident prevention it is necessary, first, to have a definite goal, such as a no-accident period, be it a week, a month, or a year, to aim at; and, second, to set up definite standards to work by. The legal code of regulations should form the basis of all standards of work at every mine and should, for this reason, cover as far as possible all conceivable phases of operation. This represents the ideal, but in practice it is unattainable, largely because of the many variables that must be considered, due to the divergence in the scale of operations and to differing geological conditions at the different mines. Hence it becomes necessary for the operator who wishes to attain the maximum in the establishment of high standards of safe operation to so amplify the code as to meet the peculiar requirements of his operation.

On the Hauraki goldfields, within the limits of Cape Colville Peninsula, the Paheozoic rocks are confined to the district north of a line drawn from Mercury Bay on the east coast to Rocky Point on the shore of the Frith of Thames. South of Kennedy's Bay they are developed on the east coast only at Kuaotunu, at which place gold mining is carried on in sandstones and slates of this age. Between Tapu Creek and Coromandel there is, along and adjacent to the shore of the gulf, a very considerable development of PaJreozoic and in part of Trias rocks, and between the Tiki Stream and the northern end of Tokatea Hill, along the western slope of the main range, lies the special area of the Palreozoic or carboniferous rocks that have more particularly to be dealt with in this paper. The same formation has a large devolpment between Cabbage Bay and the northern slopes of Moehau, and appears to the water marge on both sides of this part of the peninsula.In this part they are of special interest as having, on the west spur of Moehau, a considerable variety of dyke rocks intruded into the sedimentaries, the interest in which is increased by the fact that these dykes theIllselves are of Palreozoic age and correspond to the dykes that are so' abundant in the Tokatea-Tiki area. It is this Tokatea-Tiki area as a goldfield, and its rocks as distinguished from later volcanic' products' on other parts 'of the peninsula...

In the extreme northeast corner of the State of Washington, on the Canadian border, lies the Metaline mining district. This district is old in history, but young in production. The Metaline district is a zinc-lead area of the replacement type in dolomite and limestone. The ore bodies of the Josephine horizon are in many ways similar to the ore bodies of the famous Tri-State zinc fields. The beds are faulted and folded and have varyng low dips in varying directions, and underlie large areas of the district. Production started in 1927 on a very limited basis. The property is now mining and milling 700 tons per day. The mine is opened by adit tunnels and a vertical shaft. As the ore horizons gained depth, it was necessary to sink inclines to follow the ore horizon (see Fig 1). From 1927 to date, approximately 600,000 ft of diamond drill was put down This work indicated that sufficient tonnage existed to justify a redesigning of the whole operation, surface and under- ground. This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

The forecast of continued growing demand for phosphate, chiefly for fertilizer, has caused a world-wide rush for deposits by a variety of companies many of which have never before mined phosphate rock. The newcomers are diversifying into this growth industry on the strength of certain capabilities. Among these are the availability of investment capital, mining or processing know-how and marketing experience. Product tie-ins have motivated some into the search. Companies with excess sulfuric acid or potential for making it are in this category. This acid is the most commonly used for dissolving phosphate rock to make phosphoric acid. Base metal smelting companies are prime candidates in this field with by-product acid from roasting processes. Producers of "sweet" natural gas, such as those in Louisiana and Texas, have a potential for recovering low cost hydrogen from excess gas production for the manufacture of ammonia, the main source of nitrogen for fertilizer. "Sour" gas producers, such as those in the Canadian fields, are making sulfuric acid that is combined with western U.S. phosphate to make fertilizer materials. The presence of one or two steel companies in the look-see for phosphate deposits is based on by-product ammonia from coke-oven gas.

In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

INTRODUCTION Nonfuel mineral markets have always tended to be volatile due to the cyclical nature of demand and the difficulty of fine-tuning capacity and output levels. Experiences over the past two decades, however, have been especially perverse. This short volume attempts to provide insights into this era and some guidance for the future. The papers are linked together by their focus on issues of productive capacity. At the same time, they provide a useful description, explanation and evaluation of the industry's evolution and its implications for the near-term. The regnant pessimism of the 1980s was very much alive during the early months of 1987 when the theme of this symposium was formalized. Indices of real metal prices had only inched-up from all-time lows in 1986. The hemorrhage of corporate red-ink was still a powerful memory. Frustration with the apparent inability of closures and reduced capacity utilization to re-establish market balance was strong. To the more pessimistic, the industry appeared destined to a quarter century of persistent excess capacity and nonremunerative prices. The conditions to support this pessimism were readily apparent. Economic literature tells us that surplus capacity is a complex, usually unexpected and often long-lived phenomenon caused by the interaction of at least three factors. The first is a rising capital-intensity of production. The second is the presence of aggressive new entrants whose capacity additions are typically (1) trade- dedicated because local market absorption is low; (2) cost-competitive for natural or policy-support reasons; (3) heavily burdened by debt-repayment obligations; and (4) viewed as important sources of employment, regional development and foreign exchange. The third, and often decisive, factor is an unanticipated decline or stagnation in demand growth for the sector's output. The first two factors combine to increase competitive pressures and to raise the actual or perceived cost of idle capacity. Market rigidity reduces responsiveness to price signals and distorts the burden of adjustment. Demand atrophy exacerbates these pressures especially on unprotected producers in the higher quadrants of the global supply function. In the mid-1980s, evidence of the existence of all these factors were easy to cite. Culprits were often identified. Claims for protection, global sharing of adjustment burdens, and imposition of disincentives to new capacity regardless of inherent economic status were co-dominant themes with the buzz-words of "competitiveness" and "level playing fields." This, notwithstanding the suggestions of the same economic literature that excess capacity persists longest when interventionist remedies permit it to continue. Today, only eighteen months later, the mood is decidedly more buoyant and most analysts are cautiously optimistic about the next few years. Many informed analysts have concluded that the excess capacity of the recent past has disappeared. For the present, the marketplace seems to have restored a balance between supply and demand. That the adjustment took five or six years longer than anticipated attests to the dramatic structural changes which have characterized the industry. The implications of these changes for the future are unclear. Were the macroeconomic shocks, coupled with industry transitions, so extraordinary in magnitude and timing that experiences were unique? If so, the next years may hold more stable and cautious times for the industry. Alternatively, is the inherently volatile metals industry facing a future of cycles equally perverse in terms of amplitude and duration due to economic uncertainities and inflexible industry response capabilities?

The two factors are inseparable. Without the pioneering spirit, the natural resources of land, forest, stream, and the subsurface would have continued •to be useless,. Idle assets. With the pioneering spirit, Canada's natural resources have been and are creating economic revolutions.Western Canada oil and natural gas rank high on the list of such revolutions. Calgary, your meeting place today, is the birthplace of this economic revolution, one that has already sharply altered the economy .of the middle half of Canada, particularly that of Alberta; is increasingly making its weight felt on the economy of all Canada; and is helping re-shape world thinking on sources of vital petroleum supply for both peace and war. Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West. As a Calgarian, •therefore, I am particularly happy to have this privilege of talking about oil and natural gas to members of the C.I.M.M., who play a key role in the development of all Canada's varied natural resources."

NuevaUnión SpA (NuevaUnión) is a development project located in the Huasco province of the Atacama region of Chile. It is held in a joint venture company owned 50:50 by Teck Resources Limited (Teck) and Newmont Goldcorp. It includes the Cu-Mo Relincho deposit and the Cu-Au La Fortuna deposit, with plans to utilise a single concentrator to be built at the Relincho site. The Relincho site is at an altitude of 2,000 masl and is 40 km from the La Fortuna site which is at an altitude of 4,100 masl. The project is currently completing a Feasibility Study and is reviewing equipment selection and flowsheet options. This paper is based on the current thinking, and design decisions will be finalized at the completion of the Feasibility Study. NuevaUnión is currently planning for phased operation, processing Relincho ore at 104 ktpd followed by processing ore from La Fortuna at 116 ktpd. Plans for the third phase include doubling the main processing lines and returning to Relincho ore at a processing rate of 208 ktpd. The NuevaUnión concentrator will incorporate comminution and flotation circuits that are being designed to maximize the overall economic value of the combined ore deposits. Major ore characteristics differ between the two ore bodies, such as ore competency, grindability, liberation grind size, pulp rheology, tailings properties, minerals and metals of value, as well as gangue mineralogy. Mineral processing choices have been made to optimise value from each deposit and the combined project. INTRODUCTION Between 2010 and 2013, two significant mining projects were being developed in Chile: Goldcorp’s El Morro project had recently finalized a Feasibility Study and, in 2011, had received its environmental approval for construction; and Teck Resources Limited’s (Teck) Relincho project was finalizing a Feasibility Study and preparing its Environmental Impact Study. Both projects were: Geographically close, at only 40 km apart. Considering similar infrastructure. Each was planning to have its own concentrator, tailings management facility, high voltage power line, port, concentrate transport system, seawater desalination plant and pumping system to mine site.

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. The Mini-Disc TM cutter drill bit is a radical design departure from the traditional tri-cone rock drill bit. Miniature disc type cutting tools as small as 3.25 inches (82.5 mm) diameter are fitted to a bit body to cut individual concentric kerfs. The action is the same as that commonly used on large tunnel boring machines but miniaturized. The high performance rate and efficiency of a disc cutter are the result of producing a large proportion rock chips rather than sand or powder. The Mini-Disc TM drill bit, referred to as the "Disc Bit" has other unique features as well. It can be re-greased between runs. It can be rebuilt in the field in about 15 minutes, cutters can be replaced and the Disc-Bit appears to require less down hole hydraulic power than conventional bits. Thoroughly tested in the laboratory, the bit has recently been undergoing field trials in well drilling, blast hole drilling and shaft drilling. As any engineer knows, the laboratory cannot shake out all the problems but it eliminates the more glaring weaknesses. Performance results have been exhilarating, and a few mechanical problems were discovered and largely overcome. This paper is a progress report.

From evidence made available during the investigation, it was concluded that the first of a series of explosions occurred at 1:15 to 1:20 p.m. September 21, 1951, in an underground vault that housed pressure regulators on the gas-distribution lines that served Brighten. This explosion damaged the pressure regulators and permitted high-pressure gas to enter the distributing mains and individual-service lines. As a part of the gas-distribution system was not provided with means for protection against such excessive pressures, gas gained access to the interiors of many residences in this area and caused a series of disastrous explosions and fires, which took place during a period of approximately 2 hours after the initial explosion in the pressure-regulator vault. Two persons were killed in the first explosion in a residence, and a third person died of a heart attack attributed to the excitement that prevailed during the explosions and fires, Twenty-three persons were listed as injured. Forty-one residences were either destroyed or damaged - 11 by explosion and the remainder by fires, which developed as a result of gas leakage into residences. Fifteen residences were listed as "completely down" or "gutted." Unofficial estimates of property damage ranged from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000. In view of observations made and information obtained during the investigation, recommendations are presented in this report relative to the natural-gas distribution system in Brighton, which may be helpful in the prevention of similar accidents in this and other communities.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.
