THE introduction of a new fuel, such as natural gas, necessitates careful study where it has not been used previously. At the El Paso smelter natural gas required the installation of apparatus with which no one at the plant was familiar, either as to the type of equipment needed or as to the burning of the gas in it. Observation of existing installations of a similar character and assistance from gas engineers served as a basis to determine what was advisable to use. The gas line entering the plant goes to a metering station equipped with a duplicate system of pressure regulators, a temperature recorder and the gas company and smelter orifice meters in tandem. The Y-Al- C ternary phase diagram for the com -position range from 55 to 100 at. pct Y and for a temperature of 950°C has been constructed from metallographic and X-ray diffraction data. The significant features of the isothermal section which is presented are the small solubility of aluminum in the binary Y3C phase and the presence of a ternary carbide phase with a small homogeneity range around the composition Y3AlC. The similarity in structure and composition between these two carbide phases is discussed in the light of the misci-bility gap which exists between room temperature and 1300°C, which was the temperature range studied. THE occurrence and stability criteria of ternary T3BC, carbide phases having the L'12 structure and the general formula T3BCx have been discussed in detail by stadelmaier1 and more recently by the present authors., Stadelmaier found many representatives of these phases formed between the T metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni and the B metals Mg, Al, Zn, Ca, Ge, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, T1, and Pb. The present authors reported on a new series of iso-structural carbide phases formed between the T metals of the Sc group and the B metal, aluminum. These new phases are unique in that many of the Sc group elements form stable binary carbide phases which occur about the composition T3C and which crystallize with a structure similar to that of the T9BCx ternary carbide phases. Furthermore, these binary and ternary phases are found to coexist in equilibrium with each other. The similarity in structure and composition between, for example, Y3C and Y3AlC in the light of the mis-cibility gap which had been found to exist between these two phases indicated a need for a more thorough knowledge of the phase relations which occur in alloys based upon these compositions. Consequently, an investigation of the phase equilibria in the yttrium-rich portion of the Y-A1-C phase diagram was undertaken. The limiting Y-A1 binary diagram determined by Lundin and Klodt3 and the results of Spedding et al.4 governing the Y3C phase were used as guides in , constructing the diagram. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys weighing about 10 g were prepared by arc-melting powder compacts made from the various components on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode in a gettered argon atmosphere. Good homogeneity was obtained by melting the alloys three times. The purity of the yttrium used was 99.9 pct (0.07 pct rare earths). The purity of the aluminum and the carbon was 99.99 pct. The results of chemical analysis on five representative alloys showed that losses during the alloying process were predominantly carbon losses and that in no instance did the measured concentration of this component differ by more than 3 at. pct from the intended composition. For this reason the alloy compositions which are reported are those of the charges prepared for melting. Three alloys which were analyzed for copper, tungsten, nitrogen, and oxygen compositions showed that no contamination had occurred either during casting or during the subsequent annealing treatments. To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

Dorreh barite mine located in the central part of Iran is one of the largest barite mines, in the country. The mine is subdivided into three blocks, which are called block 1,2,3 according the barite quality. In the central part of each block, a heavily concentrated grid of exploratory drill holes have been drilled and the reserves of area was calculated based on these holes, some years ago. It was decided to compute the reserve of the area by geostatistical methods, in the form of an M.Sc. project. In order to study the area, three regionalized variables including density, thickness and density-thickness (accumulation) was studied and the spherical variograms were fitted to these variables. These models were evaluated by cross-validation method. The optimized block size was chosen in order to compute the reserves by kriging method. The reserves of explored parts of each block of mine was calculated and the results were extended to the whole area of the blocks. The reserve of the explored parts and the total reserve of the area were calculated to be 96,000t and 1,670,000t respectively.

Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.

O conhecimento sobre o comportamento do revestimento refratário dolomítico durante a etapa do refino de aço é fundamental para se atender às exigências técnicas de qualidade e o aumento da produção de aço. É particularmente importante que os mecanismos de corrosão dos refratários dolomíticos sejam bem compreendidos, principalmente, em operações de exceção, nas quais as exigências metalúrgicas causem forte dano ao revestimento, prejudicando não somente o desempenho do mesmo, mas também gerando um risco à segurança operacional. Este trabalho visa à caracterização técnica da camada protetora (coating) de silicato dicálcico (C2S), a qual se origina da reação entre as escórias silicosas e os refratários dolomíticos. As amostras de coating foram caracterizadas quanto à composição química, fases formadas e microestrutura. Estudou-se uma panela retirada de operação, por dano aos refratários, retirando-se amostras de diferentes regiões. Em duas amostras, juntamente com o C2S e o periclásio, foi observado à presença de fases à base de silicato de baixa fusibilidade como a cuspidina, indicando que o coating foi atacado por uma escória com elevado teor de fluorita.

CREATION of atomic energy, aside from its influence on war or peace, has posed these basic questions for the world: How soon can energy from atoms be harnessed to do man&apos;s daily work? How much of this power will there be, to what degree will it supplant present fuels, and what does it imply for the future of civilization? Answers to these questions may be found in part in analysis of just what atomic energy is and how far its development has come. The answers are encouraging. One of the first questions encountered in considering the application of atomic reactions is whether such reactions can be controlled. Fortunately, this has been adequately demonstrated by the operation of the Government plutonium plants at Hanford, Wash. Here nuclear reactions are carried out on a large scale involving liberation of about a billion B.t.u. per hour. This hourly heat liberation is equivalent to that obtained from about 7100 gallons of fuel oil. It has been possible to operate these plants day in and day out with the reaction controlled at the intensity desired. There should therefore be no question that, under proper conditions, reactions involving nuclear fission can be controlled.

"COREM has developed, specifically for the mineral industry, a mobile laboratory using the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. It has been used to perform onstream analysis (OSA) of the chemical composition of slurries in both gold-ore and iron-ore processing plants. Industrial tests have been carried out respectively at La Mine Doyon (Cambior), a gold-ore processing plant near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and at QCM's iron-ore pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, Quebec. The aim was to demonstrate that the LIBS technique is capable of providing information that meets the needs for process control. C, Si, Ca, Mg, Mn and Al were the elements targeted on iron ore while Cu, Fe, Ag and Au were targeted for gold ore. The results obtained meet or exceed the requirements for process control and consequently clearly show that the LIBS technique is suitable for industrial applications.The feasibility of OSA, through in-plant validations using COREM’s LIBS mobile laboratory, has been demonstrated in four essential aspects: slurry sampling, LIBS chemical measurement, robustness for continuous operation, and functionality for industrial operators.INTRODUCTIONThere is a general need for optimization in the mineral industry. Process control is a favoured means to achieve this goal (McKee 1991). Real-time knowledge of process status is the key to effective control (Da Silva 1994). Only a few techniques, such as XRF, NMR and digital imaging, are currently amenable to chemically monitor industrial processes (Braden 2002). LIBS is an emerging technique with appealing characteristics for on-line and real-time measurement of bulk material (Lorenzen 1992, Palanco 2000). While our ultimate goal is to provide our industrial partners with performing monitoring tools, a shorter-viewed objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of developing a LIBS system for OSA. The LIBS technique has shown interesting capabilities for measuring solids, liquids, dusts and gases. Our work has focused on mineral slurries (Barrette 1999 and 2001, Turmel 1999). Special equipment is needed to perform in-plant validations. A mobile laboratory based on the LIBS technology has been assembled for this task."

The Bureau of Mines gas been studying the blast furnace for a number of years and has published detailed reports on various phases of its investigations. Inquiries frequently received for information of a more general character than that given in the detailed reports have promoted the preparation of an information circular to cover in a general way the important features of the Bureau of Mines blast-furnace investigations. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS OF FURNACE The modern blast furnace approximate a refractory-lined steel cylinder about 90 feet in height and 25 feet in diameter. It actually consists of a number of cylinders and truncated cones superimposed upon each other. The shape and dimensions of a modern furnace are shown in figure 1. The bottom section, commonly referred to as the hearth or crucible, is a cylindrical section about 12 feet high. Liquid metal and slag collect in this part of the furnace and are withdrawn at regular intervals; iron is removed at a level about 2 feet above the bottom of the furnace and slag at a level about 5 feet higher. Depending upon on the size of tie furnace, 40,000 to 75,000 cubic feet of preheated air per minute is introduced through from 10 to 16 tuyeres equally spaced around the periphery of the hearth.

As a material asset for mining entities, the resources and reserves (RR) estimation processes are surprisingly underrepresented in the assurance landscape. When press reports expose them being inaccurately reported, or in merger and acquisitions processes, their importance becomes clear. The impact of erroneous RR numbers (both positive and negative) could have a material impact on an entity’s reputation and value.The technical nature and ‘black magic’ connotations of the RR estimation processes are possibly reasons why audit committees are not actively involved with it. Internal auditors avoid the RR processes for similar reasons. Also the traditional approach to obtain assurance on RR is expensive and is therefore only performed when it is absolutely required.However, stakeholders’ expectations of good governance are growing. Part of this increased focus is based on attaining a higher degree of certainty about the current and forecasted position of the entity. Stakeholders are also increasingly more interested in non-financial areas of entities, as the future success of an entity is more than a set of financial metrics.Consequently, the RR estimation processes should be visible on the agendas of audit committees. Monitoring of key controls is required as part of the governance obligations for senior management and the audit committee. So once it is on the audit committee’s agenda, the question then becomes, how will that agenda be supported by an assurance process that is cost-effective?The main objective of the paper is to describe a model of RR assurance that has been effectively applied in some mining companies. The paper discusses one particular approach that provides an audit committee with the required assurance regarding RR processes. The approach ties the assurance needs of the audit committee to the needs of the technical experts in the entity, therefore involving two important figures. It also offers assurance providers with a model to audit ‘through’ the RR processes rather than ‘around’ them. The paper then discusses top-down and bottom-up approaches that provide assurance at different levels of an entity.A governance audit that focuses on the RR processes is suggested as a top-down approach. A bottom-up approach assesses the design adequacy of internal control processes. A hybrid model is described which meets the needs of diverse stakeholders including the audit committee and the RR community.The hybrid model combines the expertise of professionals in both internal audit and RR. The right balance of these skills directed by a singular approach ensures that a credible result is achieved.This approach is not as expensive as some verification approaches used in the industry and can, as a result, be performed on a more regular basis.The last element of the paper looks at implementation of the reporting mechanism. OWING to the gradual depletion of the hitherto plentiful supply of firewood in the immediate vieinity of Queenstown and Gormanston, which caused a steady increase in the cost of fuel for domestic purposes, the Mount Lyell Company took steps several years ago to make available as a substitute electric current from its Lake Margaret hydro-electric supply. In order to make this practicable it was necessary that the cost of electric power for heating purposes should compare favourably with the cost, of fuel, and the installation of domestic appliances brought within reach of the average householder, and efforts have been continuously directed towards this end since the year 1928.WATER HEATERSThe installation of electrical apparatus in local dwellings began with hot-water services, the heating elements being the types then procurable on the market and adapted to meet requirements.These, however, did not prove satisfactory, but the study of their bilure resulted in a type being developed locally which has overcome all difficulties. The first type of water heater evolved was an outside circulation one the element of which consisted of an iron pipe through which the water passed, insulated with micanite and wound with nichrome wire, the latter being covered with alundun cement to keep it in position and prevent oxidation. This was insulated on its outside surface with a layer of asbestos flour, and connected to the hot-water container as shown in Fig. 1. It was found, however, that the iron pipe had a short life, due to a certain amount of acidity in the water, and a copper pipe was substituted which proved very durable. Some heaters with this improved type of element are still operating after six years of use. The resistance wire is run at a very low current density, which ensures durability.

Um dos problemas enfrentados pela maior parte das aciarias relaciona-se à redução do percentual de fósforo do aço. Reduzir o fósforo contido no aço tornou-se um requisito fundamental nas siderúrgicas que utilizam convertedores LD, devido à crescente demanda do mercado por aços especiais, como por exemplo, aços para a indústria automobilística. Durante o processo de desfosforação, as principais fases sólidas que podem se formar na escória de convertedor são CaO, MgO, silicato dicálcico (2CaO.SiO2), fosfato tricálcico (3CaO.P2O5), formado pela oxidação do fósforo, e o 3CaOSiO2.3CaOP2O5. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a formação destes compostos e avaliar a influência das fases sólidas formadas durante o processo de desfosforação do aço. Para isto foram analisadas quatro composições químicas de escórias com diferentes teores de CaO e FeO, sendo duas composições médias das escórias estudadas pela Usiminas, uma escória da literatura e uma escória desfosforante elaborada para pesquisa. Os resultados mostraram em quais composições ocorrem a formação das fases sólidas citadas e sua influência no processo.

Neste trabalho buscou-se avaliar o consumo de sucatas com elevador teor de enxofre, em carro torpedo, sem afetar a qualidade final do produto, objetivando a recirculação de um coproduto gerado internamente e aumento do rendimento de gusa distribuído para Aciaria. A sucata em questão é gerada a partir do beneficiamento da escória resultante do processo de raspagem após dessulfuração do ferro gusa em panela (KR) e do procedimento de limpeza dos carros torpedos. Foi avaliada a operacionalidade da adição, riscos envolvidos no processo e redução da geração com reaproveitamento direto no processo. Os resultados mostraram que existe viabilidade técnica e ganhos financeiros significativos

O moinho vertical normalmente é dimensionado através da aplicação de um fator de eficiência sobre o Índice de Trabalho de Bond (BWI) ou sobre o consumo específico de energia (kWh/t) obtido através de teste em moinho de bolas de laboratório. Para confirmar o dimensionamento do moinho vertical são realizados testes em escala piloto com grandes volumes de amostras. O presente trabalho apresenta uma metodologia para simulação de moinho vertical através de testes de moagem em escala de laboratório utilizando um moinho de bolas convencional e amostras bitoladas em diferentes faixas granulométricas. A amostra de minério de ferro estudada foi utilizada em uma campanha de testes em escala piloto com moinho vertical. As simulações realizadas utilizando a metodologia de Austin apresentaram muito boa correlação com os resultados dos testes em escala piloto.

The accompanying supply/demand flow diagrams and 10-year tables for mineral and fuel commodities present essential data required by government, industry, and others to formulate policies and programs that can help assure an adequate and continuing supply of mineral raw materials. The 10-year data base terminates with 1973 figures because adequate world information was not available beyond that date. Moreover, 1974 was an anomalous year with respect to prices, supply, and demand for many commodities. The selected mineral supply/demand tables and flow diagrams comprise but one "output" from the massive body of "information and data collected and com-piled by the Bureau of Mines on a continuing basis covering mineral production consumption, prices, shipments, imports, exports, and stocks, as well as industry activities in all States and abroad.

THOUGH the literature on the chamber process is considerable, it mostly refers to European conditions. Owing to the demand for acid for flotation and leaching at the mine, it may be necessary to work the process under other conditions. Consequently, some results obtained during the chlorination days at Mount Morgan, within the Tropic of Capricorn, may be useful for reference when working in a similar climate. Though the chambers must be protected against tropical storms, thorough ventilation should be provided, with plenty of space between the chambers, which are almost invariably crowded together. Not only does the space assist in the cooling of the chambers, but it is very desirable during repairs, when lead andtimber have to be hoisted up. The connecting flues between the chambers, which are fairly efficient mixers and condensers, should be round, supported from above, and with the least possible timber about them. Their position and arrangement deserve careful attention. Lattice work will be sufficient protection for the sides of the chambers, and the roof should be high and well ventilated. The Mount Morgan plant, crowded and not well situated, consisted of seven chambers (four over 50 ft. in length), one Glover tower 7 ft. 2 in sq. x 20 ft. high, one Gay Lussac 9 ft. sq. x 30 ft. higb, also one 5 ft. diam. x 25 ft. high. There was one pipe column 4: ft. sq. x 14 ft. 6 in. high. The chambers were run as one unit, and were much lower than those usually constructed in Europe-less than 15 ft. high. Provided that suitable timber can be obtained, 20 ft. is quite low enough. It should be quite satisfactory to use round poles for the studs, and so admit more air space between studs andlead.

Support design in jointed or blocky rock masses is often approached by the use of either &apos;rules of thumb&apos;, rock mass classification systems such as the Q-system (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) or RMR (Bieniawski, 1973) or conventional wedge analysis. Generally, this requires that a number of key simplifying assumptions are made and the support system is designed to cater for either a mean, most likely, or worst case scenario depending on the risk tolerance. The design block size is often a major uncertainty and often a worst case block size based on excavation span is used. Thompson and Windsor (2007) state that it is inappropriate to base support designs on the excavation size as these size blocks rarely occur if discontinuity trace lengths are considered. Probabilistic keyblock methods can be used to determine the most likely design block sizes. A methodology is presented whereby JBlock software (Estherhuizen, 1996) is used to estimate potential block sizes as part of the support design process. Using information such as the spacing, orientation and length of discontinuities, it is possible to simulate blocks in the walls of an excavation (Esterhuizen and Streuders, 1998). Keyblock analysis methods (Goodman and Shi, 1985) are used to evaluate whether blocks are removable and whether the chosen support will be sufficient to ensure stability. Data from two mines is used to demonstrate how probabilistic keyblock analyses can be used in support design. Discontinuity data was used to generate 10 000 removable blocks and the design block size statistics were determined. For one mine this information was used to scale blocks in a conventional. Unwedge analysis whilst for the other mine, the point estimate method (Harr, 1987) was applied. The choice of appropriate design acceptance criteria in terms of factor of safety and probability of failure is also considered.

Coal is broadly recognized as sure, competitive, diversified, not vulnerable and predictable in price energy resource. In power generation coal is playing a dominant role in the EU-27 with 25% of installed capacity and almost one third of the power generation. The role played by the domestic resources and especially by coal are increasingly becoming the focus of the EU energy strategy. There is a strong pressure for the decarbonization of the energy mix. The Emission Trading system (ETs) can have an impact on the shift to lower carbon-intensity fuels. The impact of ETs on coal can be important, because it is very short sighted and only defines the period up to 2008-2012. The ETs CO2 regime must ensure that investment in coal-fired plants in the long term are supported. EU Research Institutes and Coal Industry identified an important CO2 reduction potential by improving the efficiency of the conversion of solid fuels into electricity. Highly efficient clean coal technologies can contribute to reasonable costs and challenge the issue of climate change. It must be pointed out that the EU Energy policy should now concentrate on the necessity to effectively support demonstration projects and to create the legal framework for the integrated approach of efficiency enhancement and CCS. It is not a right approach to implement CCS before the technology is demonstrated and before it is clear that it will be commercially viable.

El trabajo se efectuó en la empresa minera Los Quenuales, Unidad Iscaycruz (Lima), modificándose los circuitos cerrados a los abiertos y encontrándose los siguientes beneficios: el incremento del tonelaje de tratamiento sin aumentar equipos en los circuitos de flotación, la mejora en la recuperación y el grado de concentrados.

B.A. Hancock It is not at all surprising that causticized potato and potato derived amylopectin starch solutions performed much better than their parent starches. Some preparation is required to rupture the starch granules to effect the polymeric adsorption and interparticle bridging necessary for selective flocculation. In laboratory work comparing the deslime performance of causticized and autoclave cooked laboratory corn starch solution preparations, it was found that higher deslime weight rejections, with attendant proportionally greater iron unit losses, occurred with the causticized starch. These results may be specific to the ore involved but they do suggest that cooking and causticizing cause different starch granule rupture and/or starch breakdown, which have an effect on desliming response. I calculated from the data in the article that the slimes product grades were high - 24.3% and 20.3% Fe when 53.7% and 54.5% Fe concentrate products were obtained, respectively, in Table 4, and 21% Fe with a 62.6% Fe concentrate in Table 5 - using the natural tailings sample, which had a head of 34.3% Fe. It may be advisable for the authors to consider different starch preparations in future investigations. The combination of upgrading and selectivity results presented in Table 4 are not as good as the authors suggest. The authors&apos; claim that a system has been developed to produce saleable concentrates from the Kudremukh tailings is quite disconcerting. There are many hurdles yet to be crossed before commercial application of selective flocculation becomes possible because differences between the very small-scale laboratory tests conducted and commercial application are rather large. Among the many differences are varying circuit feed grades that will occur from use of tailings, the apparent face that much lower tailings grades will be encountered in practice (it is much easier to achieve a high concentrate grade with reasonable recoveries using 34.3% Fe tailings as in the study rather than 25.3% Fe tailings grades that the plant apparently averages), the hydraulic nature of the thickeners used in operations compared to the static system used in laboratory tests, the different size distributions that will be obtained from a plant closed grinding-classification circuit, and differences in water used in a plant operation and the laboratory. The authors wrote that it was necessary to overgrind to be sure that the coarse gangue would not settle with the iron oxide floccules. This situation is likely to be exaggerated in commercial operations where it is assumed cyclones would be used for classification. Because cyclone classification is greatly influenced by particle densities, there will probably be an even greater difference in size between the iron and gangue particles in the plant, which would make the gangue slightly coarser still in relation to the iron. This would make the selective flocculation-desliming separations using the procedure employed by the authors even more difficult and, using the dispersant system the authors employed, greater overgrinding would be required. To grind finer to minimize the coarse gangue in the flocculated iron oxides is quite inefficient and appears not to broach the problem. The actual problem appears to be insufficient dispersion of the ground pulp. In this situation, addition of a dispersant would likely be required to attain a sufficiently high pulp dispersion level to efficiently effect a selective flocculation-desliming separation. Although the very coarse particles would still have a tendency to settle with the floccules, it probably would be found unnecessary to overgrind as much as indicated. Use of an optimum combination of dispersant and pH modifying reagents may also significantly improve the selectivity of desliming. Additionally, although it is possible that sufficient dispersion may be obtained by pH control alone in some situations, it is quite probable that added dispersity was obtained in the reported work from using distilled water. It is research experience that distilled water enhances dispersion. In commercial operations it may not be expected that sufficient dispersion will be obtained by pH control alone, unless the water used in the process is by nature quite dispersive. Overall, a change in the Kudremukh tailings dispersant scheme appears necessary where a dispersant is used in conjunction with a pH modifying reagent. With this change, different dispersion-flocculation responses will result that would have to be further evaluated. Therefore, it is still an open question whether an efficient and effective selective flocculation separation using Kudremukh tailings may be obtained that will produce saleable concentrates.
