Noranda?s Brunswick mine is a 10 000 t/d producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400 m and 1200 m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio, an overall steeply dipping tabular shape, and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) have elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning. Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically.

In small steelmaking shops, in foundries and forging plants, there are not too many option to recycle the basic slags, which are not suitable for many purposes of recycling, because of their low chemical and structural stability. A solution of an adequate recycling is a direct recycling in EAF. Several quality requirements, physico-chemical properties and proportions of slags must be analysed. The progress in this fields permites to establish an adequate proportion of recycled slag, based on enough exact computation of the related property. For oxydizing slag, obtained during melting and in the first part of decarburization operation, the problem of phosphoms contents can be analysed using the phosphate capacity (C PO34-). For reducing periods, during deoxidization operation, desulphurization also occurs and the problem of the sulphur contents can be analysed using the sulphur and sulphide capacities ( Cs / Cs) Between this two complex thermodynamic indicators of the slags. a direct relation is established, using thermodynamic aspects, resulting from the equilibrium constants for dephosphorization and desulphurization process and also, using the optical basicity of slags, computable from the chemical analysis of the slags. On this basis starting from the steel quality requirements. adequate strategies can be established in order to obtain high rates of recycling (between 50-80%) of steelmaking slags. THE fall meeting at El Paso this year (Oct. 13¬15) will be of unusual interest due to the international atmosphere imparted by the many engineers from Mexico, who are making arrangements to attend this meeting. The meeting will be held jointly with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. Cooperating in the program will be the representative society of Mexican engineers known as Centro National de Ingenieros of Mexico City, who are plan¬ning on sending many delegates and well known Mexican engineers to the convention. The cooperation of the West Texas Geological Society and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists has also been secured. Brent N. Rickard, manager of the El Paso Smelting Works of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at El Paso, Tex., is general chairman in charge of arrangements. He is receiving splendid cooperation from the Mining Department of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce and from the business people of El Paso, who feel highly honored in having these mining societies meet with them this year.

A wide variety of borehole gages have been developed for measuring rock stress. They all operate on the principle that stress changes around a borehole result in deformation that can be measured by the gage and interpreted in terms of the stress change either by calculation or calibration. In general terms, gages that comply with the borehole deformations are referred to as “deformation meters” and those that restrain the deformations by reason of their rigidity are referred to as “stress meters.” The main advantages claimed for stress meters are: their “stress” sensitivity is much less dependent on the rock modulus than that of deformation meters, and they are clamped firmly in the borehole. The use of each of the borehole gages developed for stress determinations in rock in the main has been confined to the laboratory responsible for its development. To be generally accepted a gage must meet the following specifications : 1) Gages to be left in place to measure stress changes must be relatively cheap, and if possible recoverable, so that large numbers can be used to obtain an overall picture of the changing conditions. This, of course, is not necessarily the case for recoverable gages designed for absolute rock stress measurements where usually only one or two gages are involved. 2) For use in the adverse environmental conditions encountered underground, it is essential that gages be robust, stable, and unaffected by high humidity, corrosive water, or dust. 3) Highly qualified technicians are rarely employed specifically for rock mechanics studies in mines or on civil engineering sites and there- fore gages designed for measuring stress changes must be easy to set and

NOT WITHSTANDING the extremely low ebb of business activity, the nonmetallic industries have fared somewhat better than some other branches of mining. The average price level in nonmetallics, although far from satisfactory, has resisted any cataclysmic fall such as has been suffered by copper and other metals. Stocks, also, though too abundant, represent no corresponding overhang of the market, which should result, in some branches, in a more rapid recovery. Research work has continued in some industries with interesting developments.

The SX-EW operation at Morenci includes three electrowinning tankhouses. Stainless cathode blanks require the use of insulating plastic edge strips, which typically have a service life of 1-2 years, therefore, regular replacement of edge strips is a fact of life in tankhouse operations. The largest tankhouse, Central, converted from starter sheets to stainless steel cathode blanks in 1999. During the first year of stainless blank operation at Central Tankhouse, the initial installation edge strips started failing at accelerated rates and there was a sudden need to replace edge strips and repair between 350 and 400 cathode blanks per day. This paper details the design and building of cathode repair shops at the Morenci tankhouses, including choice of equipment and layout design. The objective was to increase efficiency through the use of cathode handling equipment and flow of material.

Over the past nine years a means for measuring the distance between the mine roof and floor has been developed at the White Pine Mine which yields relevant information utilized in the mining operation. The technique known as "convergence!' is an efficient, low cost way for obtaining large quantities of data for predicting roof falls, caving activity, and overall mine stability. From a limited introduction in 1964 related to monitoring an experimental longwall project, the activity of convergence measurements has been expanded to become a production tool now found in all sections of the mine. Presently, the program involves four main types of activity: 1. Monthly measurements in areas known to be active, and in sample blocks scattered throughout the mine for a long-term stability study. 2. Semi-monthly measurements along vital travel roads, belt drifts and compressor sites. 3. Weekly measurements in areas where men are working. 4. Daily measurements in pillar-recovery and caving operations. Today, one field engineer and six technicians are involved full time in convergence work. Rock Mechanics technicians have installed approximately five thousand stations since the start of the program and of this number, over twenty-five hundred active stations still comprise the mine-wide network spread over the more than five square mile extent of the White Pine Mine workings.

DOES hand-sorting of mill feed pay? The fact that the practice is so general would seem to indicate that there must be good reasons for following it; yet, to my mind, the advantage in many cases is doubtful enough to invite a thorough discussion of the subject, in an effort to determine under what conditions hand-sorting does pay. A typical sorting plant in the Coeur d'Alene district handles about 800 tons of mine-run ore per day. The material is run over a grizzly with about 4-in. opening; the oversize is crushed to about 4-in. size and joins the undersize, and the whole product is washed and screened on trommels with about 1 ½ -in. openings. The oversize from these trommels is spread on a belt and the waste and first-class ore are sorted out by hand, the residue being further crushed, and passes, together with the trommel undersize, into the mill feed bins. About 50 tons of shipping ore and 150 tons of waste are sorted out per day, leaving about 600 tons of mill feed. To sort out this material requires 20 ore sorters and five bosses and repairmen. The normal cost of hand-sorting is about 16 c. per ton of run-of-mine ore, or 65 c. per ton of material sorted out. I believe that straight crushing and milling of the run-of-mine ore, in this case, is not only cheaper, but is metallurgically moree canonical and efficient than hand-sorting followed by milling of the residue. At one of the Bunker Hill rock-houses, 1250 tons of run-of-mine ore are reduced to pass 30-mm., or about 1 ¼ -in. opening in six hours, requiring five men. The equipment and the power consumed are not greatly different from that required in a sorting plant of the same capacity, and the normal cost of thus preparing the feed for milling is under 3 c. per ton of mine product. The relative cheapness of this method as against hand-sorting is thus clearly established, the saving being about 13 c. per ton. If there is any virtue in hand-sorting, then, it must lie in the metallurgical results achieved.

The Ortiz Mountain property is located approximately 40 km (25 miles) southeast of Santa Fe and 13 km (8 miles) from the village of Cerrillos. The property embodies a Spanish mineral grant from which Gold Fields acquired about 2, 200 hectares (900 acres of surface and mineral rights. Following a period of exploration, metallurgical testing and development of a feasibility study in 1974, the decision was made, because of the higher gold price in the fall of 1978, to place the property into production. the gold is confined in a quartzite breccia; it is an unusual occurrence because the gold in this host rock is leachable at minus 19 mm (3/4 in. ). Total ore reserves are estimated at approximately 3.6 million mt (4 million st) averaging 1.89 g per mt (0.055 oz per st) based on a cut-off of 0.7 g (0.02 oz). The ore will be recovered by open pit mining at a stripping ratio of 1. 2:l. Production is scheduled for 13,600 mt (15,000 st) of ore per week or approximately 680,000 mt (750,000 st) per year. Primary crushing of pit-run material is by a 1,070 by 1,015 mm (42 in. by 40 in.) jaw crusher. Crushed ore is conveyed to stockpile and then to a 2.13 m (7 ft) standard crusher with the screened over- size crushed in a 1.5 m (5 ft) tertiary cone crusher. The screen undersize, the final product for leaching, is minus 19 mm (3/4 in. ). A 1, 360 kg (3,000 lb) sample is cut from the crushed ore stream, further crushed in a small jaw crusher and then sampled in two more stages by Vezin samplers to produce a final 13.6 kg (30 lb) sample for assaying. Pebble lime is then added to the ore on the belt as it is sent to the conveyor gantry spanning the leach pads. A tripper on this moving gantry stacks the leach ore without compaction. The entire crushing plant and conveying system is of open-air construction. Leach pads have a total length of 515 m by 60 m (1,700 ft by 200 ft) wide with usable dimensions of 490 m by 58 m (1,600 ft by 190 ft). The directional length slope is 3. 870 with 370 on the width. The pad is constructed of 175 mm (7 in. ) thick asphalt containing a rubberized asphalt membrane. It is divided by a 300 mm (1 ft) high curb into eight segments. Each segment is loaded with 13,600 mt (15,000 st) of ore, which is one week's production. Optimum working height of a pad is considered to be 3. 0 m (10 ft) with a maximum height of 4. 0 m (14 ft).

The thermogravimetric method was selected for investigating the evaporation of Sb2S3 in the pressure range of 50–300 Pa and in the temperature range of 823–1123 K, the gas phase diffusion was the rate-determining step for Sb2S3. The volatilization rate was related to the temperature and pressure, that the logarithm of volatilization rate yielded a line with the reciprocal of temperature and pressure. The volatilization rate for Sb 2S3 was between 0–0.023 g/C1 cm−2/C1 s. The apparent activation energy was between 65.8 and 60.6 kJ/mol.

The effect of aluminum additions on the coating vale and corrosion resistance of Cr-Fe diffusiou coalings on a mild steel substvate has been studied. Aluminum additions up to 2 wt pct increase the chromium penetration rate while further additions retard it. The apparent cor$lict between these data and metallogyapkic ineasurements, which show a continuially increasing coaling thickness with aluminum addition, is discrissed. It is the purpose of this paper to present an initial report on the construction and operation of the Fluo-Solid roaster at the property of Campbell Red Lake Mines, Ltd., Balmertown, Ontario. The roaster prepares for subsequent cyanidation the bulk flotation concentrate obtained from four hundred tons per day of gold ore. The mill flow-sheet 'includes jigging and amalgamation; flotation; cyanidation of flotation tailing; and roasting followed by cyanidaition of flotation concentrate plus amalgamation tailing. Overall mill recovery for the year 1950 was 90.2 per cent. Recovery possible by straight cyanidation of this ore would not exceed 80 per cent. The ore contains considerable arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as well as pyrite, with lesser quantities of nickel, zinc, and copper minerals. The mineralization is for the most part extremely fine. The roaster first went into operation on August 7th, 1949, and at the end of 1950 it had roasted 10,916 tons of concentrate. The average recovery of gold from calcine during that period was 94.86 per cent in the primary stage of calcine cyanidation. The average assay of calcine residue from primary cyanidation for the entire period was 0.37 oz. per ton. Both laboratory tests and plant metallurgical balance calculations indicate a further recovery of approximately 10 per cent of this 0.37 oz. when the calcine residue is again cyanided, in the flotation tailing cyanidation circuit.

Pelotas compostas de minério de ferro, aglomerante e coque foram analisadas quanto à resistência à compressão (a frio e após aqueciemento) e porosidade. Para isso, três lotes de pelotas foram confeccionados, com diferentes teores de redutor, até a quantidade necessária para reação completa com os óxidos de ferro. Após seu preparo, as pelotas passaram por diferentes tempos de cura ao ar. Ensaios de resistência à compressão à frio e porosidade foram realizados em pelotas verdes e com 3, 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias de cura. Após 28 dias, uma série de pelotas foram secas e submetidas a testes de resistência à compressão após serem aquecidas a temperaturas entre 200ºC a 900º. Analisou-se, também, a perda de massa em cada patamar de temperatura. Entre os principais resultados, verificou-se que o comportamento mecânico de pelotas autorredutoras é melhorado com o aumento do tempo de cura e prejudicado pelo aumento do teor de coque e aumento da temperatura. Após 600ºC, a resistência das pelotas cai potencialmente. Além disso, lotes com maiores teores de coque apresentaram maiores valores de porosidade, sendo que este aumento foi mais significativo nos primeiros dias de cura.

This paper presents the development of a new grinding circuit steady-state modeling system. It is fundamentally based on the “functional performance equation”, which has now been used to improve the performance of numerous grinding circuits. This equation characterizes the two distinct efficiencies that are at work in a ball milling circuit, and how these relate to overall circuit productivity. It does so based on the particle size chosen to distinguish between coarse and fine (product size) material. Now, by applying it to all the material size classes, a simple yet reliable ball mill model was created. Combined with cyclone recoveries, the complete, detailed grinding circuit performance can be exactly reproduced mathematically by the computer program. It can then be used with separate process equipment application engineering methods to systematically engineer grinding circuit improvements. The development, features, uses and limitations of the system are described.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. The LBNF Far Site Conventional Facilities project will excavate and fit out a set of four caverns 4850 ft underground in which to place them."

"The Red Dog Mine is both the largest known zinc reserve and the largest zinc producer in the world. The mine started in 1989, and by 1999 had increased production from approximately 300,000 tonnes per year (t/yr) of zinc concentrate to in excess of 900,000 t/yr. The VIP Mill Optimization Project further increased zinc concentrate production to 1.1M t/yr while improving both product quality and zinc recovery. The Mill Optimization project also addressed a number of issues related to risk reduction: power generation capacity, water treatment capacity and concentrate thickening. The project was faced with numerous challenges, the most daunting of which was the schedule. This US$105M project was executed, from conception to completion, inside of two years. Less than nine months elapsed from concept to delivery of materials and equipment to site. The project also faced a 100-day ice-free shipping window, the challenges of construction in an Arctic environment, and an extremely tight labour market for qualified craft personnel. These challenges were successfully addressed with several innovative approaches to project execution, including an Alliance contracting arrangement between the owner, engineer and contractor; full integration of the team; construction of modules in Anchorage; and fast-track engineering, procurement and construction.INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Mine, which began operations in 1989, is located above the Arctic Circle in Northwest Alaska, approximately 145 km north of Kotzebue (Figure 1). An 80-km road connects the mine site to the DeLong Mountain Transportation System (DMTS) port site. Red Dog is the largest known zinc deposit in the world, with known reserves totalling 94.5M tonnes, and is the largest zinc producer with a concentrate production rate of more than 1.1M t/yr.Open-pit mining is by typical drill, blast and load operation using moderately sized mining equipment. Ore is processed through conventional crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce separate lead and zinc concentrates. Filtered zinc and lead concentrates are trucked year-round to the DMTS port site, where they are stored in two A-frame buildings, 330 and 440 m long. A lightering barge system is used to transfer concentrate from the shallow water load-out to deep-sea vessels anchored approximately two miles offshore. Shipping is limited to a 100-day, ice-free window beginning in early July."

Nowadays heap leaching has become established as a mineral processing technology for treatment of some low grade minerals such as copper, gold, and zinc, etc. Heap height, particle size, leach reagent consumption, and metal recovery are four important metallurgical parameters in a hydrometallurgical process like heap leaching. This paper investigated the effects of heap height and particle size on copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Three heap heights of 2, 4 and 6 meters and two particle size fractions of less than 25.4 mm and 50.8 mm were selected as variables in the experiments. The research results showed the inverse relation between heap height and copper recovery as well as acid consumption. Under given conditions, the copper recoveries of minus 25.4 mm ore are 78.63%, 66.27% and 52.88% higher than that of minus 50.8 mm samples for the heap heights of 2, 4, and 6 m, respectively. A traveler driving across desolate central Nevada to the Round Mountain property can easily identify with turn- of-the-century prospectors seeking a fortune, or at least an existence, from the high desert. But now a shadow passing overhead is as likely a sophisticated fighter aircraft from Stillwater Naval Air Station as a circling bird, and the famous trails west show only as historical markers along the highway. Even the approximately 400- km (250-mile) trip southeast from Reno or northwest from Las Vegas takes hours now, not days. And the camps of Round Mountain’s early prospectors have been replaced by one of the world’s largest gold heap-leaching operations. While Round Mountain’s uniqueness begins with its scale, it doesn’t end there. Consider the mine’s low cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold, made possible by a new dedicated (not reusable) leach pad. Also, the operation’s degree of automation means that ore dropped in the south crusher system is not manually handled until it is stripped from the pads. There is the bonus of a geothermal field that is tapped to heat the leach solutions in the winter. And, of course, there was that “unexpected” hitch expected in all mining operations. For Round Mountain, it meant buying a gravity plant to process the gold nuggets discovered last summer in a fault gouge.

Field measurements and theoretical studies have been made of pressure surges—momentary variations in fluid pressure—produced by movement of pipe in mud-filled boreholes. Pressure measurements were recorded by five pressure gauges located at various positions in the borehole. An important positive pressure peak was found to occur as the casing moved with maximum velocity. Important negative peaks were found as the casing was lifted from the slips and as brakes were applied to stop pipe movement. A rigorously formulated theory has successfully predicted the sequence and magnitudes of these positive and negative surges and has established a basis for understanding how they occur. Both the measurements and theory indicate that the most important pressure surge is usually due to viscous drag of the flowing mud. The theory of viscous-drag pressure surges has been approximated by simplified graphs and calculation procedures to facilitate ready use in field operations. Comparison of measured results with those predicted by the simplified theory shows that the magnitude of this surge can be predicted accurately. INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that raising or lowering pipe in a fluid-filled borehole produces momentary variations in fluid pressure, commonly called pressure surges. Both negative (or "swabbing") surges and positive (or "fracturing") surges may occur. In 1934, Cannon1 measured the negative surges and showed that they could be large enough to cause flow of formation fluids into the well-bore and, in extreme cases, lead to blowout conditions. Later, Coins2 measured the positive surges associated with lowering pipe. His results and subsequent field operations strikingly demonstrated that pressure surges could be an important factor in some cases of lost returns. In addition, although the evidence is less clear than in the case of blowouts and lost returns, other investigators 3, 4 feel that pressure surges probably play a part in many instances of minor gas cutting, salt-water flow and other hole trouble. The importance of pressure surges in drilling operations led naturally to attempts to explain the physical causes, nature and magnitude of the surges. Cardwell5 was the first to publish a theory which allowed the quantitative prediction of momentary pressure variations. He assumed that the drilling fluid was a 300-cp Newtonian fluid in turbulent flow. Most field muds have a considerably lower viscosity and are generally believed to be Bingham plastic in nature.6 However, card-well's results were useful because they were presented in a form convenient for field use and, in some cases, gave a reasonably accurate predicted value for the maximum pressure surge. Subsequently, Ormsby7 published a more comprehensive theory of pressure surges. He discussed both laminar and turbulent flow and considered the theory of mud-bypass devices for reducing pressure surges. As a consequence of his more rigorous approach, his results were more accurate but more complex and difficult to use. Further, both Ormsby and Cardwell considered only the pressure surge arising from viscous drag of the moving mud. Clark later published idealized graphs of surges and presented equations for predicting their magnitudes. In addition to pressure variations arising from viscous drag, he considered those caused by inertial effects. His theory was in this respect more complete than those of Cardwell and Ormsby, although he did not discuss pressures due to breaking of the gel. Furthermore, his equations, while not exceptionally complicated, were too complex for ready use at a drilling location. One difficulty common to all three theories is that none was tested rigorously by direct comparison with measured pressure surges. Their accuracy, therefore, could, not be demonstrated. Further, the two theories based on most realistic assumptions (Ormsby and Clark) required the solution of one or more rather complex algebraic equations. The research described in this paper was undertaken to supplement that described and to overcome some of the difficulties noted. It seemed obvious that a fully satisfactory study of pressure surges should encompass three main phases. 1. A valid theory useful in all field situations must be developed. This theory must be based upon realistic assumptions, must be formulated rigorously and should lead to clear concepts whereby the nature of pressure surges can be easily understood. 2. The theory, however complex and involved, ultimately must be presented in simplified form for convenient field use. This may involve extensive machine computations and the use of figures and empirical equations. 3. The accuracy of the simplified equations must be established by comparing measured pressure surges with those predicted by the theory. These must agree both in their characteristic nature and in magnitude. 'This means that careful measurements of surges occurring in actual field operations must be made.
