One of the consequences of large-scale opencast mining for coal is the disposal of an enormous volume of overburden material that needs to be removed. With the enlargement of opencast mines and associated high stripping ratios, the volume of overburden extraction is rising. Overburden from the initial mine cut has to be necessarily dumped outside the mining area until enough void is created inside the mine for back-filling operations. The quantity of overburden placed outside the mining area normally varies from 10% to 30% of the total overburden removal. The stability of these dumps placed outside the mining area is of prime importance from the point of view of smooth operations of the mines and safety of persons in and around the dumping area. Owing to increasing pressure on land use, mine operators do not have any other option other than to place the waste dumps very near to the surface edge of the pit, which may lead to failure of the topsoil benches of the working pit. This study identified major controlling parameters that influence a stable but economic combination of height and slope angle of external dumps located close to the edge of an open coal pit.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

The Duchy of Luxemburg, which between 1735 and 1815 was French, adopted as its basic mining law the French Law of April 21, 1810, and an Imperial Decree of January 3, 1813. The Luxemburg Government later supplemented and modified this legislation by the laws of June 12, 1874, April 30, 1890, and May 10, 1898, which, with article 36 of the Constitution, are to be taken into consideration in a complete survey of mining legislation. "The application of a thin spray on liner was implemented in longwall T-junction sections in 2009 for the first time. The development of the material and the application is based on a technical cooperation between RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG and BASF Corporation. The report gives an overview of the first trials. The underground test occurred in a seam with a height of 1.5 m (5 ft) in a depth of 1,100 m (3,609 ft). The roadway is dual-use entry and the roof strata is composed of shale and sandy clay. In some sections geological faults impact the surrounding strata. The poor conditions induce separating and loosening of roof rock. Several remedial actions have to be implemented for decreasing deformations at the face entrance.The application of thin spray on liner (TSL) provides simplification and cost reduction of supporting work at longwall T-junction. The installation of TSL to avoid roof and coal fall operations for lagging are omitted.INTRODUCTIONFor safe operation of face retreat in dual-use roadways, the processes of securing and stabilizing the face end area are very important in order to minimize deformation and stress. Avoiding roof and coal fall are the main concerns for safe operation. For that reason different methods of reinforcement are tested in underground operation. In this paper the application of TSL is presented.The specifications of TSL are described, followed by the case study results. The underground study is located in one mine of RAG Deutsche Steinkohle. The extraction of the hard coal in this mine is characterized by great depth and high stress. There are poor geological and geotechnical conditions. The roadway used for the underground application was headed with the support system combination type A, which will be described later in the paper. After the first face retreat, deformation of steel arch support and bagging destroyed the roadway, so for the second face retreat remedial actions had to be undertaken. For this a new system of reinforcement, simplifying the supporting work at the longwall T-junction was tested. The reinforcement consisted of different parts that are described in the following report. Furthermore two different versions were applied. One method is the operation with TSL and the other one is the use of concrete for sealing. Both methods are compared in the text."

A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the' rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas. Models of the size specific processes of particle collision, attachment and detachment have been combined in a form suitable for analysis of a full-scale flotation plant. The model is based on a first principal approach to particle collection by bubbles. Parameters considered include particle size, bubble size, particle contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment and froth recovery. Using data structures configured within an Excel spreadsheet using æLimn: The Flowsheet ProcessorÆ, the model has been incorporated into a description of the individual cells within a simple roughing and cleaning flotation circuit. Simulated feeds of varying particle size distribution, feed tonnage and varying mineral hydrophobicity representing different mineral phases are presented to the model to produce predicted final concentrate grades and recoveries. Practical techniques for measuring many of the parameters included in the model are now becoming readily available. However, relating the terms included for contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment (ie water recovery) and froth recovery to measurable parameters in operating plants remain as continuing challenges for research.

The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

The redesign and reinforcement of a highwall located adjacent to a $10,000,000 shopping center, destabilized by active subsidence, was conducted after an extensive geotechnical investigation. The highwall was excavated in a hillside where a coal seam had been retreat mined and augered. Engineering geological mapping, determination of the properties and behavior of the intact rock, fractured rock, and urethane grout material, and soil were required to characterize the highwall and conduct a stability analysis. Remedial measures included re-excavating portions of the highwall to reduce the slope angle, and pressure grouting of the immediate roof.

Because mine haul trucks consume considerable quantities of fuel, they are ideal candidates for the adoption of cleaner and cheaper fuels like natural gas. Impressive fuel cost savings will be realized in regions where liquefied natural gas (LNG) has cost advantage to diesel fuel, while also providing significant reductions of air contaminants and greenhouse gases. High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) of natural gas utilizes the diesel cycle combustion process and therefore retains the diesel engine?s high performance and efficiency characteristics. HPDI has been demonstrated in on-road Class 8 trucks since 2001 accumulating almost 10 million kilometres to date. The supply of LNG fuel will be an essential parallel aspect in the introduction of HPDI to mining. LNG can be transported to site as diesel is today, or may be produced on or near mine operations that have access to methane sources or pipelines.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has played an integral role in many large scale tunneling projects globally. Until recently, it has been regarded as a complementary monitoring tool. On the Los Angeles Metro Purple Line Phase 1, InSAR was proposed as a primary means to replace weekly and bi-weekly surface monitoring requirements on surrounding critical infrastructure. This paper will summarize the statistical analysis approach engaged in order to compare and contrast a year of historical InSAR data to known geodetic survey data, in order to utilize InSAR as an operational monitoring tool on this project.

The DC arc plasma gasifier concept is currently under development at Mintek for testing the feasibility of producing syngas from waste coal fines and dry steam. The technology is intended for the valorisation of low-grade discard coals into market-quality syngas, which may then be used for largescale electrical power generation to address current grid supply challenges in South Africa. Other potential applications include feedstock for petro-chemical plants, fuel for transportation vehicles, domestic and industrial heating, and others. The proposed concept of a DC arc plasma gasifier was developed based on a plasma torch, metallurgical-based and entrained flow coal gasifiers. The principles of design and operation of the proposed gasifier are based on the concept of the Westinghouse Plasma Corporation (WPC) gasifier where the torches are substituted by graphite electrodes from which electric arc plasmas are generated. The DC section of the gasifier will be designed considering Mintek’s experience in the sealing of the furnace as carried out in the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process. As part of the building blocks of a full conceptual design, the feasibility of the DC arc plasma gasifier was investigated through testing and modelling of its critical elements as proof of concept. The main activities of this work included pilot scale evaluation of the arc behaviour in the presence of dry steam, modelling of the temperature distribution within the reactor and explosibility studies on three different coal dust samples. "Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

"The use of liquid copper as a medium for zinc extraction has been used in the Warner Process as a method of processing zinc-lead sulphide ore. The recovery of zinc metal is based on the reaction:ZnS(s) + 2Cu(l) = Zn(g) + Cu2S(l)In this method, thermodynamic and phase equilibria investigations of the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems are of importance and form the basis for the liquid sulphide phase which appears as a product and is used as a solvent in the Warner Process. Phase relations in the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary systems were determined experimentally at 1473°K to provide a fundamental basis for the new zinc smelting process. The results show that the solid solubility of ZnS in the two systems is very small (2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in FeS, 4 wt% ZnS in Cu2S for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; less than 0.5 wt% ZnS in both PbS and Cu2S for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). The Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS in the liquid mixtures and the vapour pressure of zinc over the matte in both systems is relatively large (?° = 7.7 – 15.8, Pzn(atm) = 0.088 – 1.026 for the Cu2S-FeS-ZnS system; ?° = 8.9 – 12.9, PZn(atm) = 0.075 – 0.214 for the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS system). On the FeS-ZnS join, the only phases detected are FeS and iron-rich sphalerite (Zn, Fe)S. The binary join mixture occurs at about 92 wt% FeS-8 wt% ZnS at 1473°K. Electron microprobe examination of the quenched samples indicate about 47 wt% to 48 wt% FeS in sphalerite and about 2 wt% to 3 wt% ZnS in the iron sulphide phase. On the Cu2S-ZnS join, microprobe analysis reveals that the maximum solubility is 4 wt% Zn in liquid Cu2S and 3.6 wt% Cu in solid ZnS. In the Cu2S-PbS-ZnS ternary system, microprobe analysis of the quenched samples indicate on average, 5 wt% ZnS in the liquid phase region. The only phases detected on the PbS- ZnS join are ZnS and PbS. The eutectic phase contains, on average, 13 wt% ZnS. The phase relationships, very low solid solubilities of zinc sulphide in the liquid mixtures of both Cu2S-FeS-ZnS and Cu2S-PbS-ZnS systems, coupled with the high Raoultian Activity Coefficient of ZnS as well as the high vapour pressure of zinc over matte all favour the partitioning of zinc metal into the vapour phase. This new process is cost effective and bypassesthe expensive and tedious conventionaltechnique of zinc production involving oxidationof the sulphide ore by roasting followed bya reduction process to extract the zinc. Theresults indicate that a new zinc smelting technologyusing the Warner Process would bemore efficient and preferable over the traditionalmethods of zinc extraction."

Preface The intention of this paper is to provide the reader with knowledge gained here at Memorial University regarding the practical use of the Bruker SDD x-ray detector for applications in image analysis. Included below are descriptions of the detector’s characteristics and observations regarding precautionary use. What is described below is relevant to the XFlash® model 3001 detector only, whereas the model 4010 is the new and currently available detector. The manufacturer has provided up-to-date information and a figure that presents very different behaviour relative to the characteristics described in this paper. That information and figure is also included here as an addendum (see figure 9). Introduction It has been more than two decades since an image analyzer has been proposed based on the unique imaging characteristics and spatial resolution provided by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with energy discriminating x-ray (EDX) acquisition (Reid et al, 1984). From the inception of technique, technology of the day has played the major role for making applications increasingly more practical. Computers, digital imaging, and softwares together with computer automation of modern digital SEMs have all played their part in advancing the technique to where it is today.

HALLOWAY mine of Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill, Tenn., has been under development for several years. It has two shafts, the A shaft, 1336 ft deep from the surface to the 16 level, and the B shaft, lying 500 ft to the southeast and extending 1385 ft deep from the 10 level down to the 24 level. A section through the two shafts, Fig. 1, shows the development work entailed by the proposal and the area involved. The Problem: For operational reasons it was necessary to extend the B shaft from the 10 level to surface, and the pilot hole and raising method was chosen. This method had been used to extend the Company's Boyd manshaft from the 10 to the 14 level in 1954, but no satisfactory hole surveying method had been employed. In that instance, when the hole was located it was found to be about 8 ft from its calculated position. The success of this shaft extension method lies in the ability to keep the pilot hole within the proposed shaft diameter for nearly the entire length. The approximate 670 ft of extension distance in one hole was thought to be excessive because of deflection encountered locally in other core drilling. Since a connection between the two shafts, intermediate between the surface and the 10 level, would be required at some future date, the pilot hole drilling was done in two sections. This intermediate level was fixed at the 6 level and distances became 470 ft from surface to the 6 level and 230 ft from the 6 to the 10 level. A rock pentice of 25 ft was left temporarily in place just above the 10 level.

Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's Stanleigh Mill in Elliot Lake began production in June of 1983. The highly instrumented mill treats uranium ore at an average rate of 3900 metric tons per day. To help ensure a good start-up and low operating costs, an extensive training program was undertaken prior to and during start-up. This presentation describes how an unconventional operating crew were combined to form an operating unit with a high efficiency in terms of production and labour utilization. I would like to point out at the outset that the operating philosophy, and the role of the supervisors and the operators as set up at Stanleigh is not unique. Indeed, I have seen the same results at a couple of small plants where efficiency meant survival. However, these situations appeared to be the exception, and it was not readily apparent how similar results could be obtained in a larger plant. A factor that existed at the time was low labour turnover. As in most parts of Canada, jobs were easy to get in the Elliot Lake camp in the late 1970's. This, and other factors, contributed to an unusually high labour turnover. This changed dramatically in the early 1980's. Indeed, Rio's two other operating mills, Quirke and Panel reduced crew sizes at this time to reduce operating costs. As a result all of Stanleigh's operators came from Quirke and Panel with experience varying from 4 to 7 years. The experience that operators had was obviously of benefit and served to reduce the scope of the training program from what would have been required with inexperienced personnel."

Standing crib supports have been applied in underground mining programs to resist large roof movements and sustain high-loads. The strength and deformation capability of these systems has been documented under both laboratory and field conditions. The parameter that has not been examined and is not well understood is the effect that a crib or other types of standing support has on the primary and secondary bolting systems. A crib support system with low system stiffness may allow large amounts of closure and deformation and cause the bolting systems to yield or even fail. Conversely, cribs or standing support that are too stiff may experience brittle or buckling failures, negating the advantage of the intrinsic supports previously installed. Utilizing a combination of field measurements and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques, the relationship between system stiffness and the subsequent performance of the installed bolting system is evaluated. Additionally, a simple method for calculating the combined system stiffness for standing supports, when using materials with different strengths such as steel, concrete, wood, etc., is presented.

Illumination is essential for mine safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to detect hazards associated with slips/trips/falls and powered haulage. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting mine illumination research to improve miner safety by enhancing a miner?s ability to see mine hazards. Thus far, 16 papers have been published covering diverse topics such as cap lamps, machine-mounted lighting, glare, lighting maintenance, and light-emitting diode (LED) technology issues. NIOSH has also developed an LED cap lamp, LED area lighting, and a Visual Warning System (VWS). This paper provides an overview of the improvements from NIOSH-developed lighting that include: 94% faster trip hazard detection with the NIOSH LED cap lamp; 79% faster peripheral motion detection to detect pinning/striking hazards; no increase in glare; 71% faster machine movement hazard detection with the VWS. Current research is described concerning an LED cap lamp for metal/nonmetal miners, illumination for refuge alternative deployment and inspection, and whether lighting could be used to improve miner escape and rescue in smoke. Lastly, future possibilities of using lighting to improve miner safety are described.
