A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. General Considerations There are numerous factors which appear directly or indirectly to affect the overall performance of bituminous coal underfeed stokers, such as the caking or matting properties of the coal, the contact relationships between coal and air, the ash fusion characteristics, the burning rate, and the design of the stoker and furnace in which the coal is burned. This paper summarizes the direct operating cash costs for the Barrick Mercur open pit gold mine. A comprehensive, detailed system of cost management has been in effect for the life of the Mercur operation. This system provides the basic data for operations control and is the basis for drafting budgets as well as analyzing impact of change on operations costs. The ore body is complex geologically and metallurgically, requiring operators to pay close attention to mining and processing costs. The cost history provides data which enables analysis of changes in production levels, aging of the mine production fleet, and the impact of specific cost changes through time.

I remember the 1983 conference and this "DFI News" note with its summary of my lecture - and how I cringed on seeing the heading of the note, claiming that I had "released the wave equation." The WEAP (wave equation analysis of pile driving) had been "released" about a decade earlier by the founders of GRL Engineers and Pile Dynamics, George Goble and Frank Rausche, marking the beginning of their great contributions to the geotechnical engineering practice "the quantum leap." I appreciate the opportunity, now 40 years later, to correct the heading implication. Several typos in the note, then irritating, are now more amusing, such as, "dull complex" instead of "full" and "restriction" instead of "restrike." My lecture tried to introduce some of the then recently developed dynamic monitoring and analysis state of the practice: the WEAP and PDA/CAPWAP (Pile Driving Analyzer/CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program). The lecture and the notes should be read in the light of how they were operated in early years. The mainframe computer and input was by means of punch cards. The field testing using the PDA was by lugging the analyzer, a bulky tape recorder, an oscilloscope, and power-cable and gage-chord bundles to the site. If travel was by air, the analyzer sat on the seat next to the engineer. For assessing the pile in the field, the measurements were printed out on a paper roll. In the mid-1980s, a screen was added to the analyzer, it became digital, and data were stored and accessible electroni- cally also in the field. No more tape recorder and oscilloscope. At about the same time, the PC arrived and the WEAP became available for running on the office machine. Process was slow; while the PC ran a WEAP, it was time for a cigarette and a cup of coffee. To think through the input to the analysis, there- fore, became an important time-saving effort. Soon thereafter, the CAPWAP also became available for use on a PC. The first International Stress Wave Conference in Stockholm in 1980 (it continued every fourth year, thereafter) started the international acceptance of monitoring. At the third conference, in Ottawa in 1988, the number of indi- viduals outside of GRL performing CAPWAP analysis amounted to 17, with 14 from outside the U.S. Today, the high-strain dynamic monitoring is routine wherever piles are driven, and its use has been extended to testing non-driven piles. The wave equation and high-strain dynamic method, then and now, is for assessing pile-soil response in terms of pile capacity and hammer perfor- mance. Over the years since, it has been extended to low-strain integrity testing and current advancement of tech- nology has been incorporated. For example, the connection between pile gages is now wireless and the analyzer is a tablet. The pile monitoring data can be sent to the "cloud" and enable remote testing. The process is so fast that an automatic signal matching can be made in real time on every blow. At some sites, every pile is tested, thus, the method is used for continuous quality control of the hammer-pile-soil system.

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

Deformation substructures of' polycrystalline tungsten, W-2, 9, and 24 pct Re, and W-3 pct Ta were studied by tra?zsrnission electron microscopy. The stress-strain curve for unalloyed tungsten showed gradual yielding followed by work-hardening. Electron nzicrographs indicated a gradual increase in dislocation density with increase in strain up to 5.0 pct. Dislocations, although frequently jogged, were straight over moderate distances and were in a randorn array. Stress-strain curves for alloy specimens of W-2 and 9 pct Re and W-3 pct Ta exhibited a drop in stress at yielding followed by only slight work-hardening. Electron micrographs of these specimens after strains of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 pct revealed no change in dislocation substructure from the unstrained specimens. After 2.0 pct strain, the three alloys exhibited dense networks. W-3 pct Ta was characterized by straight, frequently jogged dislocations comparable with the dislocation structure in unalloyed tungsten after a similar amount of strain. In contrast, W-2 pct Re exhibited dislocations that contained widely spaced jogs, while W-9 pct Re had developed a cell structure after the relatively srnall strain of 2.0 pct. The W-24 pct Re alloy contained a few dislocations after 0.1 pct strain, while after 0.5 pct strain twins were evident. Dislocation slip bands apparently preceded the twins. The stress-strain curve for the alloy indicated that twinning commenced after approximately 0.25 pet strain. These results indicate that the primary effect of low rhenium concentrations (2 and 9 pct) in tungsten is to increase dislocation multiplication after macroyielding by reducing the Peierls-Nabarro force (lattice resistance to dislocation motion). The dislocation bands that precede twins in W-24 pct Re may be caused by localized internal stresses resulting fro a metastable structure, for example, clustering of rhenium atoms. The effect of high rhenium additions (22 a 65 pet* Rproperties of tungsten. Klopp, Witzke, and Raffo5 reported bend transition temperatures as low as -100°F (200°K) for dilute electron-beam-melted W-Re alloys tested in the worked condition. Recrystalliza-tion increased the bend transition temperature, but alloys with 2 to 4 pct Re were still markedly superior to unalloyed tungsten. Fractographic examinations of tungsten and W- 3 pct Re and W- 5 pct Re alloys by Gilbert 6 revealed that these low rhenium alloys showed a greater tendency toward cleavage failure than did tungsten. Garfinkle 7 showed that rhenium additions, up to 9 pct, to (100) oriented tungsten single crystals increased the proportional limit stress and decreased the flow stress and the rate of work-hardening. In addition, while deformation in unalloyed (100) oriented crystals apparently involved both (110)100) and (112) slip, crystals with rhenium contents of 5 andpct or more deformed primarily by (112) slip. The mechanism by which high and low rhenium additions affect the mechanical properties of tungsten is still not well-established. The present investigation was undertaken to determine by transmission electron microscopy the effects of low rhenium additions, 2 and 9 pct, and a high rhenium addition, 24 pct, on dislocation substructure in the early stages of deformation of polycrystalline electron-beam-melted tungsten. Unalloyed tungsten and a W- 3 pct Ta alloy were included for comparison. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Triple electron-beam-melted tungsten, W-2, 9, and 24 pct Re, and W- pet Ta were used for this investigation. Chemical analyses of the cast ingots are given in Table I. A description of the starting metal powders and melting and fabrication pro-cedures for unalloyed tungsten and the W-Re alloys is reported.5 The W-3 pet Ta alloy was processed in a similar manner. Compression specimens measuring 0.300 in. (7.6 mm) in length by 0.130 in. (3.3 mm) in diam were machined from swaged rods. All alloy specimens were annealed in a vacuum of 8 x 10- 6 Torr (10'2iVper sq m) for 1 hr at 3600°F (2255°K). The recrystallized grain size ranged from 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam for the alloy specimens. Unalloyed tungsten was annealed at 2400° F (1589°K) for 1 hr to produce a recrystallized grain diameter of approximately 0.12 mm. Specimens were electropolished in a 2 pet NaOH solution to a diameter of 0.125 in. (3.18 mm) to remove surface notches resulting from grinding and to improve reproducibility of t data. The ends o the compression specimens were ground flat, parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the longitudinal axes with 4/0 emery paper. Compression Tests. The compressive stress-strain apparatus used for compression tests is described in detail by Stearns and Gotsky.9 Room-temperature compression tests were conducted at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min (0.25 mm per min).

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

This paper considers the current methods of analysis employed, the validity of assumptions made and the reliability of results and predictions derived; where appropriate, alternative methods are proposed which are more accurate and can be applied with greater confidence. In regard to data collection, new local blasting data has been analysed and conclusions drawn but, due to the restricted amount of space available, reference to data set A only has been made in the text. The problem of mathematical model choice is considered and results for two and three parameter power laws are compared. The very important matter of parameter determination is discussed fully, with major emphasis being placed on the comparative merits of log-log linear, log-log planar and direct power law regression. Supporting data analysis examples are included. Assumptions regarding the normality of ‘best-fit’ regression model residual distributions are questioned and the reliability of associated safety limit determinations is discussed.

The Korean crisis and the cessation of Russian manganese-ore shipments to the United States in 1950 reemphasized the almost total dependence of the domestic steel industry on foreign supplies for metallurgical-grade manganese ore. In this emergency, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to undertake experimental mine and process development work on the known large reserves of low-grade manganese ore in the Artillery Mountains region in Mohave County, Ariz. The objective of the work was to obtain the basic mining and metallurgical data needed to make specific plans for initiating exploitation of the deposits within 3 years if high-grade foreign ore could not be obtained during the emergency. The manganese deposits of the Artillery Mountains region are in an area of about 25 square miles on the north side of the Bill Williams River in southern Mohave County. Lasky, of the Federal Geological Survey, has estimated reserves at 175 million tons of manganiferous material assaying 3.5 to 4 percent Mn. Although the man¬ganese occurs in various Tertiary and Quaternary formations as both bedded and fissure vein deposits, the more important syngenetic deposits are found in upper and lower manganiferous zones in the sedimentary beds of playa and alluvial fan origin that constitute the Chapin Wash formation.

MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

The implementation of technological advancements in flotation is key to optimize performance in mining operations. Consequently, flotation cell’s performance is highly dependent on the effectiveness of the mixing mechanism. A more efficient flotation mixing mechanism is likely to improve metallurgical performance and optimize energy consumption, which is the motivation for Metso’s journey to develop the latest iteration of FloatForce®. Looking to test the new design at plant scale, Metso approached the Kennecott Copperton concentrator, which is continuously looking for different venues to improve metallurgical performance. In this context, a test campaign was conducted to implement this new flotation mixing mechanism in their rougher circuit during 2024. The industrial trial consisted of several sampling campaigns assessing different operational parameters for comparison purposes around a 300m3 flotation cell. The effect of the new flotation mixing mechanism on the cell’s power draw was also studied. The results of this trial at Kennecott are presented in this paper. Overall new flotation mixing mechanism, FloatForce+ was seen to perform as well as the original FloatForce.

The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines; support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine; and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

"INTRODUCTION Aluminum and manganese bronzes as a group, may be separated readily from other copper-base alloys by experienced sorters. However, separation of aluminum bronze from manganese bronze is generally a matter of guesswork, so that accurate separation presents a difficult salvage problem.Attempts at separation by the thermoelectric tester. 3/ which had proved successful in solving other sorting problems, showed in this instance that the desired separation was uncertain because of the wide range of composition allowable in each kind of bronze. If only one composition of each kind of bronze were used in industry, separation by the thermoelectric method probably would be simple. However; the variability in composition observed in commercial alloys is so great that the thermoelectric power of the one type frequently overlaps the range of values found for the other. As a result, specimens frequently are classified in the' wrong group.Separation of the two types of bronzes on the basis of measurements of magnetic properties on filings from the various samples also proved unsuccessful because the test results overlapped to such an extent that no clear-cut division could be obtained.Electrode potential measurements were made also on the aluminum and manganese bronzes in the hope of distinguishing between them. A drop of saturated potassium chloride solution was placed on the fresh surface of the metal and the tip of a calomel electrode introduced therein. The voltage generated was measured by connecting the electrode and the bronze part to a research-type potentiometer. Although the voltages generated by the manganese bronze parts were greater than those generated by the aluminum parts, the difference in the closest two sets of readings was not sufficient to warrant a good separation. When a concentrated potassium alum solution was used instead of the potassium chloride solution, a wider divergence of voltage was produced by the various bronzes, but unfortunately readings overlapped in several instances."

In the spring of 2009, Suncor Energy Inc. technical personnel saw an opportunity to improve planning and mining of overburden material in order to address aggressive construction goals and increased mining complexity. By tying together current and historical equipment performance, geological model information, and material observation in the field new operating elevations for the shovels were developed. At the same time, methodology of recording and reporting overburden movement through the Modular Mining DISPATCH system was changed. The result of this first stage of improvements was an increase in construction-grade material available at the face. The personnel involved realized that other opportunities were available to build on the initial successes and establish processes that would stand up to attrition and experience levels. A cross-functional technical team was assembled to identify ways of further improving workflows around overburden mining. Some of the opportunities realized include greater alignment between planning, reporting and operations as well as development of reporting tools that help steward Mine Operations to the plan. All of which have resulted in Suncor meeting or beating its forecast overburden targets. The cross-functional technical team continues to seek out new and better ways of doing business so Suncor can continue to deliver on its commitment of outstanding performance and results.

The writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the bene-ficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added' The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"† using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the phosphate Recovery corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for bene- ficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., sub-,,,tion types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small—about 1¼-in. diameter. As the feed flake. Is to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. 1 and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant NO. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. Minerals Separation flotation machines in plant No. I The objections to the cascade installation are the floor space and mill height required. Since the beginning of the nuclear era, there has never been a commercial solution for the large quantities of depleted uranium hexafluoride generated from uranium enrichment. In the United States alone, there is already in excess of 1.6 billion pounds of DUF6 currently stored. INIS is constructing a commercial uranium processing and fluorine extraction facility. The INIS facility will convert depleted uranium hexafluoride and use it as feed material for the patented Fluorine Extraction Process to produce high purity fluoride gases and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid. The project will provide an environmentally friendly and commercially viable solution for DUF6 tails management.

"This research was aimed to explain the reasons of low floatability of tennantite from refractory pyrite ores of non-ferrous metals and to create a reagent regime for selective increasing a recovery of copper sulfide minerals from arsenic-containing copper pyrite ore. ?opper-zinc ore of the Uzelga deposit has 89% of pyrite, some part as melnikovite; copper is assayed as 3.58% of tennantite and 0.25% of chalcopyrite; there is 2.19% sphalerite. Sulfide minerals are very finely disseminated. Tennantite is genetically related to primary copper sulfides. Graphene was identified on the surface of tennantite by a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) method. The recovery of tennantite was rose up by using the collector M-TF. M-TF is the mixture of diisobutylditiophosphate (DTF) and O-isopropyl-N-methyl (ethyl) (TC) in the certain ratio. M-TF change up a kinetic of copper sulfide flotation in a slightly alkaline medium, but pyrite has slowly floatability at this moment. A depressing effect of thiosulfate ions in a liquid phase of pulp flotation tennantite from pyrite ore has been established. A copper recovery up 14.2% (from 67.7 to 82.0%) into a copper concentrate level off copper grade of 18.65% (butkx) and 18.68% (M-TF) has been increased by the new technology with M-TF compared to a standard technology with butkx. A main copper recovery up to 50 % in an inter-cycle copper concentrate assaying 19-21% Cu in case of using M-TF was gotten. A zinc concentrate with recovery of 50% and a zinc assay of 41.76% by a standard flow sheet with butyl xanthate was obtained. A zinc recovery of 70.3% with a zinc grade of 44.17% by the M-TF technology was achieved.INTRODUCTION The pyrite copper-zinc ores of the Urals region are considered refractory. The distinctive features of these ores include a high content of pyrite (90-95%), the presence of arsenopyrite and arsenical pyrite, and the simultaneous presence of chalcopyrite, bornite, tennantite with the predominance of the latter (Andreasen et al.,2008;.Dobrotsvetov, 2009; Chanturiya et al. 2016). The flotation properties of tennantite differ from those of chalcopyrite (Xumeng Chen, Yongjun Peng, Dee Bradshaw. 2014), which is the reason why a comprehensive study was under taken of the flotation activity of tennantite and a process for its recovery was developed. The proposed agent treatment and flotation process make it possible to produce salable copper and zinc concentrates."

According to the principles of simultaneous chemical equilibrium and electronic charge neutrality, the system of Mg(II)-NH3-CO32--SO42--H2O at 25°C has been thermodynamically analyzed. And the rule of solubility of MgCO3(s) in the system is discovered, the high dissolution field of MgCO3(s) is discovered too. Furthermore, the solubility of MgCO3(s) is increased with the increase of the concentration of SO42-, but it is decreased first then increased with the increase of the concentration of all the CO32- and the total concentration of ammonia and ammonium, and decreased with the value of pH being higher. Those results will has important significance on prepare magnesium chemical products and other salts carbonate that are strict with the content of magnesium with carburization method.

While the old-time melter was satisfied to bring his metal out in the desired condition, and therefore took care to have the slag liquid enough, the importance of a thorough knowledge of the slag is at present recognized in all up-to-date melting-shops. Formerly slag or cinder was considered a necessary evil, accumulating in some mysterious way wherever a man was striving to produce a clean metal. Nowadays we deliberately aim at a well-defined slag, which varies with the nature of the process and the product. In steel-making we need slag for two main purposes, namely, refining and protecting the metal. To refine metal, essentially oxidizing and reducing processes are required, while to protect the metal we need a reducing or, still better, a neutral atmosphere. Although an absolutely neutral condition between steel, on one side, and the containing vessel and the slag, on the other, is an imaginary conception, the various furnaces in use for the production of liquid steel maybe arranged with respect to the attainment of this ideal in about the following order of merit: converter, open-hearth, crucible, and electric furnace. In dealing with the subject we will find it convenient to avail ourselves of the terms of physical chemistry, which yield a simple conception of the matter and an expedient way of expression. Slag and metal at large are not mixable with each other, and we will therefore call them the two " immiscible phases," though there are certain compounds which dissolve in both phases under conditions to be considered later.
