This report assesses the expected detectability, on the surface above mines, of electromagnetic signals produced in the frequency band of 630 to 3030 Hz by a rescue transmitter activated by miners trapped underground. This assessment is based on a statistical analysis of experimental signal and noise data taken at a representative sample of coal mine sites well distributed over the United States underground coal fields. Regression analyses are performed to characterize the signal transmission behavior of overburdens as a function of depth and frequency. The predicted signal behavior is then combined with experimentally based distributions of the background noise, and aural detection characteristics of signals in noise, to generate curves of the expected probability of detection for trapped miner signals versus overburden depth and operating frequency. The implications of these results, and associated recommendations, are presented regarding the detectability of trapped miners, sensitivity analyses and confirmatory tests, and operational utilization considerations for the trapped miners and the search and rescue team on the surface.

"Experiments were carried out to determine the long-term effect of instillation of 500 mg of generic bituminous, anthracite, quartz, or titanium dioxide (Ti02) dust on the composition of pulmonary surfactant. Dust was instilled in the caudal lobe of the right lungs of female pigtailed macaque monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). The composition of surfactant isolated from cell-free bronchoalveolar lavage (CF-BAL) samples obtained from right lungs (dust exposed) at various times over the following year was compared with that of surfactant isolated from CF-BAL from left lungs (dust free) . Little change was seen in the amount of surfactant-associated lipid phosphorus as a result of exposure to dust. Exposure to quartz, anthracite, or Ti02 dust induced a significant increase in the total amount of protein in the surfactant-enriched fraction. The relative amount of specific proteins was also altered: surfactant-associated protein A decreased, and the amount of the heavy and light chains of immunoglobulin molecules (identified by NHiterminal amino acid sequence analysis) increased. These changes were visible more than a year after instillation of quartz and at least 3 months after instillation of anthracite dust. Despite variation in the responses of the individual animals, the changes observed might serve as an indicator of the severity of the effect of exposure of the lung to mineral dust and/or to pathogens. Neanderthal technology is a harsh and inaccurate way to describe modern underground construction and mining practices, but such an exaggeration helps to focus on a major problem or wasted opportunity of modern society. Why is it not safer to excavate in the underground? Why are the working conditions still so unfavorable? Why are urban freeways, shopping malls, warehouses, power plants, sewage disposal treatment plants, and similar facilities still constructed on the surface of the ground--because it is a better location? On the contrary, if underground technology made full use of existing knowledge, underground resources and space would be much more effectively used. And why is the technology so inadequate? Certainly, researchers and practitioners are aware of the shortcomings and are equally aware of problems that have to be overcome. One of the most important reasons has to do with the type of policy goals that society has set in the past. Policy makers may have agreed that improvements would be desirable but no serious commitments have been made--that is, there has been no major allocation of resources to advance these technologies. And yet, to bring about significant changes will require significant time and resources. The resources that are needed are far in excess of what industry can afford to invest, particularly since the pay-off may be far in the future. So the problem reverts to society in general. As long as society is willing to tolerate the present costs and safety requirements for recovering minerals and for constructing underground facilities, then the changes will be slow in coming. Recycle II is an advanced technology UBC recycling facility designed to meet the most stringent environmental standards enforced to date in the United States, particularly with respect to NO, and particulate emissions. This paper addresses the exacting requirements and strategies of Alcan's Recycle II project andThorpe Technologies' design considerations and solutions for the supply of environmentally favorable melting furnace and delacquering systems. The furnaces are equipped with low NOx regenerative burners and furnace pressure and hearth gas flow controls designed specifically for processing the hearth gases through baghouses. The delacquering system is a new generation Apros concurrent flow unit designed for low NOx emissions.

For over 50 years R W Miller & Co Pty Ltd operated old coal properties abandoned by former owners as uneconomic, some of which dated back to the last century. The companyÆs ability to survive with what were relatively poor quality coal resources required a small efficient management organisation. In 1970 R W Miller was involved in negotiations with other coal companies through coal sales contracts to develop private coal areas under the provisions of the old Coal Mining Act (1906) and these efforts led to the development of Lemington colliery. At the same time development of the Ironbark colliery holding near Newcastle commenced. In 1971, R W Miller approached the New South Wales Government for a resource replacement area to prospect for coal in the Upper Hunter Valley. Authorisation No 33 was finally granted on 30 September 1975, but the company found the area was inaccessible as most of the surface was owned by the Australian Army. Later R W Miller was granted Authorisation 66 of 2167.5 hectares at Mount Thorley near Singleton on 1 November 1976. The development of this coal mining project coincided with the second OPEC oil crisis in 1978 and a short-term boom for coal resources and the unrealistic expectations generated by the boom. This paper gives a broad outline of the development of the Mount Thorley project between 1976 to 1986 including the feasibility study and the many governmental and industrial delays that resulted in a three-year time overrun in the project development period.

For several years Hatch has been installing fibre optic temperature sensors on the copper cooling elements of smelting furnaces to improve monitoring capabilities in critical locations. The metal/matte tapblock is a key area to monitor in the furnace as it undergoes severe wear from the molten material repeatedly drained through it. The high wear rate around the tapblock means downtime is necessary to perform refractory repairs. A good understanding of the tapblock condition allows the operation to maximize safety and production; consequently the metal/matte tapblocks have been the focus of this study. Fibre optic technology allows the installation of numerous sensors in locations that are very sensitive to refractory thickness, thereby providing information previously unavailable with traditional measurements. The transient nature of the thermal response to tapping and the three-dimensional geometry of the tapblock confound the interpretation of refractory thickness from temperature measurements. This paper focuses on the analysis of both plant data and thermal modelling simulations and details the progress made in relating the temperature measurements to the refractory thickness in front of the copper tapblock.

One year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. It is the purpose of this paper to describe, in a general way, the construction of these welded roofs and bottoms, and to give their advantages over riveted construction. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

There is increasing demand for geotechnical contractors to commit to carbon reduction, net zero or science based targets. A lot of focus has therefore been placed on using low carbon materials and low emission rigs. However, whilst these are ways to help reduce carbon, there is a need to look beyond just substituting materials and fuels to meet net zero. Using the IEMA carbon hierarchy, there is a need to first look at eliminating and reducing emissions, before considering substitute materials. For example, in geotechnical designs, this may mean considering using ground improvement or reducing the number of piles, before considering using low carbon cements. Equally, for remaining emissions, this hierarchy means considering carbon negative products to offset emissions, such as ground source heat pumps. This hierarchy can also be applied throughout geotechnical contractor organisations. For example, considering video conferencing for meetings, before considering public transport or using an electric vehicle. This article explores the carbon hierarchy and how it can be applied to all areas of a geotechnical contractor’s business. Only through embedding this hierarchy across the business can geotechnical contractors achieve the step change required to meet net zero.

Na Aciaria-LD CSN obtém duas estações de gusa, chamadas de Estação Leste e Oeste. A logística de transporte do gusa produzido no Alto Forno até a Aciaria é feita através dos Carros Torpedos. Nas estações são feitos cambamentos dos carros para abastecer panelas de gusa, que levarão até os Conversores. Para efetuar este movimento de cambagem é necessário controlar dois motores de corrente continua e freios que obtém nos carros. Na UPV obtém vinte e sete carros torpedos em operação, assim o controle deve estar preparado para controlar todos. Antes da modernização o painel funcionava sem nenhuma tecnologia de controle e obtinha alto custo de manutenção. Em virtude destes aspectos novo sistema obtém conversores estáticos que controlam motores e controlador responsável para efetuar balanceamento de carga do gusa. Este projeto tem como objetivo garantir continuidade operacional do sistema além de gerar maior confiabilidade no equipamento e uma alta tecnologia para efetuar melhorias, analise de defeitos entre outros. O rendimento após a implantação é fantástica devido ao controle preciso obtido além da rastreabilidade de todas as variáveis do sistema e um custo de manutenção baixíssimo, tornando-se um equipamento no estado da arte.

This report deals with the creation of an efficient method to determine if command, control, communication and monitoring (3cm) equipment in coal, metal and non-metal mines is susceptible to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from the Medium Frequency (MF) radio communications system. A qualitative and quantitative RFI test plan was developed for in-mine and laboratory evaluation of the equipment. The laboratory testing was accomplished using the TEM Test Chamber. Detailed information on the Test Plan and the TEM Test Chamber is included. During in-mine testing of the MF System some underground equipment malfunctioned when the transmitter's radiating antenna was in close proximity. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing was done on three levels; Component (circuit or box), subsystems and system. Nine tables are included which show the results of testing various equipment for RFI.

Fire has long been a concern for underground mine workers. A mine fire can occur at any time and can result in a partial or total evacuation of mine personnel and the loss of lives. Fires can grow rapidly. Time is the critical element. Prompt detection, timely and accurate warnings to those potentially affected, and a proficient response by underground miners can have a tremendous impact on the social and economic consequence of a small underground fire. Fire preparedness and response have components of technology and people. These components can work synergistically to reduce the time it takes to bring the system back in balance. This report deals with the preparedness of miners to respond to underground mine fires. It is intended to aid the mining industry in understanding the various roles of emergency responders and the training techniques used to increase their skill levels. The report also presents a technology overview to assist in effective response to mine fires.

The paper examines the problems that arise in undertaking socio-economic impact studies to meet the requirements of environmental-impact legislation governing new mine development or expansion. An approach to undertaking socioeconomic impact studies is outlined, responses to specific problems are discussed and ways in which the mining company can use these studies to meet its general objectives are explored. The paper concludes by examining how a socio-economic study, as required by legislation, can be used to assist the mining company in achieving some general objectives it will have in developing a mine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented an inte¬grated static and geophysical monitoring program in a southern Wyoming mine to study changes in seismic wave propagation properties in roof strata. The purpose was to develop techniques to assess roof stability problems. The work consisted of record¬ing deformation and stress histories and calcu¬lating seismic velocity profiles. In addition. geology and roof conditions were mapped; the in¬struments were initially installed at the develop¬ment face; monitoring continued until the mecha¬nized retreat face retreated within 60 m of the instruments. Mining geometry consisted of a three-¬entry gate system using 5.2-m-wide pillars at depths of 426 m. Results were analyzed using stan¬dard history plots, velocity tomographs, and numer¬ical modeling techniques. Changes in velocity. frequency, amplitude, dynamic elastic modulus, and dynamic Poisson's ratio were related to roof defor¬mation, fracturing, and support requirements. A reduction in seismic velocity of 17 pct occurred after 60 mm of roof deformation following installa¬tion of supplementary support. Static measurements revealed significant dilation in the mine floor, spreading to the pillar and the mine roof. Failure was initiated in the floor as a result of uniform pillar penetration.

During the design and construction of a coal preparation facility, there are many items that can cause serious problems if not properly handled in the early stages of a project. These problems can be a detriment to smooth owner/ contractor relationships, the designing of a flow sheet, the selection of equipment, the design of the facility, the maintenance of schedule and budget, and a smooth start-up. It is the purpose of this presentation to identify some of these problems and to suggest steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate their impact.

The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

The use and application of shotcrete for ground support in the Asia Pacific Region is as diverse as the countries that make up this region. This paper will attempt to describe the many methods used on selected projects within that region. The project description(s) will include project logistics, equipment, mix design, products and application methods utilized along with specifications and performance results (where available). The author will attempt to reach a conclusive opinion on the success, or nonsuccess, of the various shotcrete methods employed and the development of shotcrete within the Asia Pacific Region.

The role of a project metallurgist is diverse and covers input into the resource definition, mining studies, metallurgical test program development, process engineering and plant design, cost estimate preparation and financial analysis aspects of project feasibility studies. Mining project schedule and cost overruns can often be attributed to cutting short metallurgical test work, engineering and cost estimating leading up to commitment to development. In a significant number of cases this may result from the lack of understanding and commitment by the project proponent to the requisite metallurgical and processing studies required during the various pre-commitment stages of a mining project. Metallurgical test work, process development, engineering and cost estimating requirements for each stage of pre-commitment development are described together with a summary of the ongoing role of the project metallurgist during detailed engineering and commissioning of a process plant.
