The operation of Falconbridge's Sudbury nickel smelter has undergone significant change since the production was consolidated to a single electric furnace in 1994. In the late 1990's a capital program of about $100 MM (Cdn) was undertaken to expand and modernize the smelter. This project, known as Smelter 2000, was mainly driven by the need to process the new concentrate produced at Falconbridge's Raglan operation in northern Quebec. Included in the scope of the project was the installation of dry concentrate handling facilities, modifications to the roaster feed preparation system, installation of a matte granulation system and modification of one of the converters. Improvements to in-plant hygiene were also an important part of the Smelter 2000 project. Over the past 5 years much has been learned about the challenges in treating two significantly different concentrates. More recently, the introduction of a third concentrate from Falconbridge's new Montcalm operation near Timmins, Ontario has added another dimension to the operation. This paper will describe how the main challenges from the past 7 years have been overcome and discuss the path forward for the Sudbury Smelter Business Unit.

The paper studied the extraction characteristics of the fly ash from a location in Guizhou province. Under ordinary pressure, the fly ash is extracted by an acid and alkali, and then studied for its reaction characteristics with different extraction agentia, temperature, consistence and time. The results of acid extraction show that there are good reaction characteristics for Fe2O3 with HCl and the extraction rate decreases with the increasing of extraction time. There are good selective characteristics between Al2O3 and H2SO4 and they weaken with the increasing of temperature and the expanding of time. The best extraction results are shown with CaO and MgO because of their chemical characteristics and the over-saturation degree of the extraction processing. In addition, It?s found that it cannot leach all the substances from fly ash even with the higher consistence (10mol/L) of extraction agent, the longer extraction time (2h) and the higher temperature (100?) .It shows that the extraction rate of Fe2O3 is 82.81% and that of Al2O3 is 29.01%. The results of alkali extraction show that the extraction rate increases with the consistence of extraction agent and temperature, and the extraction rate of SiO2 by NaOH increases rapidly with the time expanding while that of Al2O3 falls gradually.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Coppcr Mining Co. in Butte, Mont, are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 1/2-in. rope. 5 main hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 6 shafts using 11/8-in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 11/8-in. rope. 15 shafts using 1-in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8-in. rope. 1 shaft using 3/4-in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines wing 5/8-in, 3/4-in., 7/8-in., and 1-in. (15.9, 10, 22, and 25 mm) rope. THe flat ropes run from 1/2 by 71/2 in. (12.7 by 1905 mm.) to-3/8 by 4 1/2-in (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting engines, which arc set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties ill operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes. In general, the practice in Butte is to use hoisting engines equipped with 12-ft. (3 7 m.) cast-iron drums, smooth faced, for 11/2-in. rope and 6-ft. cast-iron drums, smooth faced, lagged with 3/8-in. steel plate for 11/4 l1/8 and 1-in. INTRODUCTION Tunnel construction has always been an extremely high risk form of contracting primarily due to the inaccessability of information concerning the ground conditions to be encountered during excavation. We certainly make every effort to overcome this problem through borings, geological research, site visits, etc.; but at best owners, engineers and contractors alike are only able to interpolate a relatively small amount of factual data from isolated sections of the project into a forecast of ground conditions for the entire project. In essence this becomes an "educated guessing game" with risk to reward ratios (and subsequently the bid price) in direct relationship to the contractor's confidence in the quality of the guess. In many instances it is economically or physically infeasible to obtain information and of course the total picture is never known until the project is complete. This problem effects the contract format as well as price. The contractor's ability to handle unforseen problems on the project become extremely important as to the project's overall success. The following pages contain an actual case history of a project which affords an excellent example of the entire spectrum of situations resulting from tunnel construction in difficult ground conditions.

In 1984, the Bureau of Mines evaluated an area previously identified as having "probable mineral resource potential" for copper, lead, zinc, gold, or silver within the Elkhorn Wilderness, about 5 miles west of Winston, MT. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mineralized structures at nearby mines and prospects outside of the Wilderness extend into and contribute to the anomalous zone and, if so, to expand the domestic supply of strategic and critical mineral resources for future needs by identifying and quantifying resources on public lands. Fifty-eight soil samples, 23 rock samples, and 1 stream sediment sample were collected in the Staubach Creek area. Overall sample analyses suggest the anomalous zone in the Staubach Creek drainage is possibly associated with -.mall pyritiferous quartz veins. These veins or veinlets may be part of a system of northeasterly-trending structures prevalent in this art of the Wilderness. However, there is not sufficient evidence to prove that identified resources outside of the Wilderness extend into it in the Staubach Creek drainage, or that economic base- or precious-metal deposits are likely.

Charles Morris Minerals engineers have a new opportunity to shape their industry's future. They can help secondary school teachers in their own communities improve their scientific knowledge and thus be better prepared to teach their students. Local sections of AIME and other groups are being asked to sponsor expense-aid scholarships for teachers who complete the summer field course A Total Concept of the Mining Industry. Now in its 18th year, the six-week summer course is presented by the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation Inc., in cooperation with the Colorado School of Mines Office of Special Programs Continuing Education. The course will be held June 9 through July 18. "In the past, we have been successful in soliciting support for teacher-scholars from many organizations, corporations, and individuals within the industry," said John Robertson, Jr., Foundation chairman. "Now we hope to enlist the help of engineers at the grass roots level in identifying qualified local teachers and giving them what it takes to participate in this continuing education program." Robertson said the course provides secondary school teachers, counselors, and administrators with a working knowledge of the mining and metallurgical industries. It also helps teachers recognize career opportunities for their students. "With the industry facing a challenging new era, we must have teachers who can relate the excitement of this challenge to their students. They will inspire future generations of resource finders, developers, and managers," he said. More than 670 teachers in 27 states, including 45 graduates of the "class of '85" have completed the course and gained six semester hours of graduate credit. The Foundation's Planning and Curriculum Committee meets regularly to develop the course outline and recruit the faculty. Lecturers are selected on their ability to communicate with people not familiar with the industry. Last year, 67 faculty members came at their own time and expense to discuss their specialties, ranging from exploration to marketing. Normally, teachers receive scholarship aid in the form of tuition and fees, and transportation and meals while on field trips. Expense-aid scholarships cover room and board on campus for those beyond the Denver-Metro area, and travel to and from Golden. "We hope to broaden the appeal and the geographical range of the program," Robertson said. Inspiration for the field summer program for teachers came in 1967 from a mining engineer, the late C.L. (Lindy) Barker, a 1931 graduate of the Colorado School of Mines. Barker and a group of concerned individuals convinced the Colorado Mining Association to accept sponsorship of the course in 1968. The Colorado School of Mines and its Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education agreed to be a co-sponsor to give it accreditation and provide physical facilities and coordination. The first course was held in 1969. Operating funds were solicited from industry to pay tuition, course material, the cost of a course coordinator, field trips, and overhead. Through the years, personal contact by an industry representative has been the most effective teacher recruiting tool. Through expense-aid scholarships provided by local sections of professional organizations, such as AIME, as well as CSM alumni and other friends, there will now be a greater incentive for more teachers to get to know the minerals industry and pass that knowledge on in the classroom.

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. Open pit optimization forms the basis of mine design, production planning and construction of mine facilities. The negative effects of this phase may include substantial reductions in ore recoveries, relocation of waste dumps and surface infrastructure, extraction of unwanted waste, with a cumulative effect on mine value reductions. As a result, this area has received significant research focus using linear and dynamic programming, heuristic, genetic and stimulation algorithms and the graph theory. These algorithms are derived from rigorous mathematical models, but they are built on the assumption that all the periodic production capacities are extracted at the time of analysis. This assumption weakens the models because mining occurs over significant time period. In order to develop a comprehensive model that accounts for the timing of material extraction, the current models, which are built on the economic block value (EBV) concept, must be modified to account for time. In this paper, the authors develop a model of the optimization problem using the 2-D Lerchs-Grossmann?s optimization algorithm. This model is used to investigate the effect of periodic discounting on the optimal pit layout design by designing an integrated pit optimiser (IPO) that incorporates ?production scheduling?. IPO uses the ensuing discounted economic block value (DEBV) as a basis for the pit optimisation process. The time-dependent model is compared with a time-independent model. The results show that discounting has no effect on the optimal pit contour although the reported pit value is overstated if the EBVs are used instead of the DEBV. The authors, however, believe that this conclusion may not be general and could have been influenced by the nature of ore body geometry and the proposed mining strategy.

The Robinson project is based on the porphyry copper and gold deposits in the Robinson Mining District, near Ely in Eastern Nevada. The district was mined from the late nineteenth century to 1978 by Kennecott Copper Corporation and its predecessors. Operations ceased when falling copper prices in the late 1970's made their outdated mill and smelter complex at McGill uneconomical. In October 1991, Magma Copper Company (Magma) acquired the many claims that cover the known porphyry copper deposits in the district These occupy a disturbed area about nine miles long and three miles wide between the towns of Ely and Ruth. Magma proposes to build a copper / gold mine and concentrator and expand the existing gold leaching facilities. Several pits, previously mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, will be enlarged; the use of larger, more modem equipment will result in higher productivity and lower operating costs in general. ICF Kaiser Engineers, of Oakland, California, were awarded the con-tract for detailed design of the process facilities, which was essentially complete by the end of 1993. The project at present is awaiting completion of the environmental permitting process; state air and water permits are in hand, and the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) current schedule indicates that the final obstacles to construction will be cleared by early fall of this year.

Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of acidic solutions of thiourea, CS(NH2)2, for dissolving gold from finely disseminated gold ores. The ore tested was from the Chipmunk orebody of the Northumberland mining district in Nye County, Nevada, USA. Extractions of up to 90 percent were attained from the ore. Extraction was shown to be dependent on thiourea concentration, ferric sulfate oxidant concentration, acid concentration, and leaching time. Optimum conditions were an ambient temperature leach near pH 1.0 utilizing 100-200 kg/t thiourea and 50 kg/t ferric sulfate for 8 to 24 hours.

This paper describes a process developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal and pyrite flotation which leaves the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse containing 10% sulfur and 30% carbonaceous material was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material; and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocycloning) may be used to increase the pyrite : coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimates for the process show a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse, but these do not include labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation. The development of this process consisted of three parts: (1) exploratory tests, (2) op-timazation tests and (3) confirmatory tests. The objectionable qualities that sulfur imparts to coal have been commented upon from early times, and they have become more objectionable as the uses of coal have grown. In whatever form coal takes — raw, carbonized or gasified —the sulfur content remains objectionable, and therefore its compounds are removed as completely as possible. It has long been known that sulfur occurs in coal in different forms. In 1861, sulfur was said to exist in the state of sulfuric acid in combination with a base; in combination with iron as iron pyrites; as bisulfides of iron; and in combination with the organic elements of coal.' Pyritic sulfur is a term loosely used to cover the sulfur associated with iron in its various forms. The mineralogically recognized forms are pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe 1-x S) and marcasite (FeS2). The particle sizes of pyrites vary widely. Isolated grains of marcasite smaller than 15 microns have been found disseminated through coal.2 Hair-like "veins" of pyrite filling cracks in vitrain have been found. At the other extreme, lumps or nodules of pyrites large enough for removal by hand picking have been encountered. Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur, does not exist as discrete particles, but is instead intimately associated with the coal structure and thus it is impossible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical or mechanical means.2 In the preparation of coal for its various markets, the pyrite minerals (pyrites) are separated from the raw coal feed. This separation process concentrates the pyrites in the tailings or other waste products. It would be desirable to recover these pyrites for three reasons: (1) Pyrites are potential sources of sulfur and iron. In 1967, for the fifth consecutive year, Free World consumption of sulfur exceeded production.3 Propelled by the shortage, the domestic price of sulfur has risen from $24 to $38 per long ton (bright). (2) The refuse, when placed in piles, becomes ignited. The pyrites (FeS2) bum, giving off SO,. Thus, the pyrites are a cause of air pollution. (3) Also, the pyrites undergo chemical reaction when exposed to air. The refuse is leached by waters which result in stream pollution due to the water-soluble iron and acidic reaction products. Coal refuse also contains coal minerals and clay minerals. Therefore, any process for recovering the pyrites must successfully separate them from the coal and clay minerals. In the study discussed here, ten different bituminous coal refuse samples were successfully upgraded in pyrite content. These samples represented a wide variety of coal waste materials from Pennsylvania and other states. The variabilities of the sulfur and coal contents are shown in Table I. The extremes are Sample J, a high sulfur-low coal, and Sample B, a low sulfur-high coal. Definitions of some of the symbols or terms used in this report are given below: Mesh size—Tyler standard mesh screen sieves with an opening based on the square root of two. Fe —Indicates iron, as determined by a stannous reduction-dichromatic oxidation method. S—Indicates sulfur, as determined by the ASTM "Eschka" method for sulfur in coal.

On Sunday morning 7th November, 1976, at approximately 2-25 a.m., smoke was discovered issuing from the 1912 m long belt drift at Appin Colliery. A Clouth steel cord rubber belt approximately 940 mm in width had been installed in the drift in 1963 on the basis that no fire resistant steel cord belt was then available to operate on a single lift at the load and on the 160 gradient of the drift. Investigation showed that the belt drift was on fire and the usually downcasting drift was upcasting. Immediate fire fighting and rescue operations were instituted and the drift was sealed off. High expansion foam was pushed into the drift from the surface and the fire was brought under control. Recovery work resulted in the fire being put out and the drift open for walking traffic by, S-P0 am., on Wednesday 10th November, 1976. lie experience gained during the fire fighting and recovery operations led to recommendations in regard to future use of high expansion foam.

As ligas do sistema Cu-Al-Ni sofrem Transformações Martensíticas Reversíveis (TMR) e podem apresentar Efeitos Não Elásticos, incluindo o Efeito de Memória de Forma (EMF). Elas podem ser utilizadas nas diversas áreas e são promissoras para substituir ligas do sistema Ni-Ti. Neste trabalho foram estudadas três ligas distintas: monocristalina e policristalina Cu-Al-Ni e policristalina Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti, dando atenção a análise da estrutura e comportamento mecânico, em seu estado inicial e após tratamento de betatização. Nas três ligas foram identificadas as fases martensitas ß1 e Y1e as fases R e ß1. A liga Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti ainda apresentou o composto Cu2AlTi. Durante a deformação, as três ligas sofreram TMR, induzidas por tensão, com reorientação das fases envolvidas. O tratamento de betatização aumentou a plasticidade, sendo mais notável na liga policristalina Cu-Al-Ni. A liga Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti se mostrou como a mais frágil, sofrendo a fratura antes de alcançar 10% de deformação. A liga monocristalina se mostrou a mais promissora para realizar EMF, revelando maior deformação armazenada no patamar de pseudoescoamento.

The primary aim of all ground geophysical work has been, of course, to locate orebodies. As with any geo-physical method, its success depends on a proper mastering of the types of surveys and equipment used and their application to the physical properties associated with the orebodies. The Schefferville deposits are iron ores subjected to enrichment by the process of leaching. Although some ore types are porous and low in demiity, most of the ore zones have had a net increase in density brought about by enrichment. In the course of their formation, the magnetic characteristics of the rocks have usually changed, as much of the magnetite was altered to relatively non-magnetic iron oxides and hydrous iron oxides. Ali drift-covered areas underlain with iron-formation are potential ore-producing areas. From these first two physical proper-ties and a determination of the thickness of the over-burden, a combined gravity-magnetic-seismic and/or resistivity survey allows for the detection and sorting out of iron-formation and potential ore zones from the country rocks. If the iron-formation possessed relatively uniform physical and chemical properties, the problem of locating areas underlain with ore, using geophysical methods, would be greatly simplified. Unfortunately, the iron-formation is a complex assemblage of rock types, each having different physical and chemical characteristics. In spite of this, qualitative and semi-quantitative correlation between the results of the surveys and the geology and structure of the area could be established. In addition, a semi-quantitative to quantitative correlation of the values of the residual gravity anomalies with the specific gravity, the iron content, the porosity factor, the dimensions of the under-lying orebodies and the values of the ground magnetic intensity above a reference lithologie unit, with the per cent weight Fe304 recovery and the susceptibility, led to the discovery of a direct-shipping iron ore deposit in the Schefferville mining district of Canada.
