Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar o efeito da adição de minérios com diferentes comportamentos a alta temperatura (assimilação e penetração de fase líquida) nos indicadores de processo em uma sinterização piloto. Para isso, seis sinter feeds foram caracterizados e, em seguida, submetidos ao ensaio de sinterização, considerando diferentes misturas a sinterizar. Foi observado que a substituição parcial de um minério que possui grande capacidade de assimilação por aqueles que assimilam pouco o líquido formado no processo de sinterização, resultou em maior resistência mecânica do sínter. Essa propriedade pode também ser associada ao formato dos poros no sínter produto, que reflete na sua redutibilidade. Em termos de penetração de fase líquida, os resultados indicam relação direta com a resistência mecânica do sínter. Dessa forma, esses ensaios de caracterização, juntamente com os aspectos mineralógicos, químicos e granulométricos, permitem subsidiar a tomada de decisão para a substituição mais adequada de um minério na mistura a sinterizar.

O projeto Minas-Rio iniciou as suas operações no final de 2014 e se encontra na fase de ramp-up buscando a capacidade nominal. O circuito de cominuição inclui três prensas de rolos em circuito aberto com o objetivo de criar micro fissuras no minério e assim reduzir o consumo energético da etapa seguinte, o circuito de moagem de bolas. Este tipo de fluxograma, com prensa de rolos (circuito aberto) seguido de moagem de bolas (circuito fechado), é conhecido como circuito híbrido. A literatura apresenta este circuito híbrido como o de maior eficiência energética. A maior preocupação com relação as prensas de rolos aplicada aos minérios de ferro é a geração excessiva de finos que poderiam elevar o perda de material na etapa de deslamagem, anterior a etapa de concentração por flotação. Os resultados obtidos através de amostragem das prensas mostraram que não houve geração excessiva de finos. Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados iniciais da operação das prensas de rolos.

LouisiaNa ranks fifth among the oil-producing states. In 1941 the state-wide production was slightly in excess of 118,000,000 bbl. of crude oil and conden-sate—an increase of 15,000,000 bbl. over the total production for the year 1940. During 1941, south Louisiana produced approximately 90,900,000 bbl. of oil, while north Louisiana produced approximately 27,000,000. South Louisiana, therefore, produced about 3¼ times more oil than north Louisiana. During the past year, 574,800,000 M cu. ft. of natural and casinghead gas were produced in Louisiana; thus 1941 gas production exceeded the 1940 production by 104,900,000 M cu. feet. Completion records for the year 1941 show that 1512 wells were completed in or adjoining producing fields. These wells, which were drilled to extend known producing areas or were located within producing areas, are not considered as wildcat wells. Of the total number of field wells drilled, 1152 wells found production; the remaining 360 were junked or dry and abandoned. This means that 76 per cent of the wells drilled were successful. Considering the precarious nature of oil-field development, this percentage of new producing wells is exceedingly satisfactory. Of the total number of field welis com-pleted as producers, approximately 86 wells found new and distinct producing sands. During the past year, 30 new fields were found. Four parishes—namely, Caldwell, Catahoula, Orleans, and Natchitoches— entered the ranks of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state during that period. This brings the total number of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state up to 48. Thus, 75 per cent of the parishes in Louisiana now contain one or more oil and/or gas fields. Although sufficient data are not available to list the addition reserves found in Louisiana during 1941, it is felt that such reserves undoubtedly exceed twice the total production for that year, or at least 200 million barrels. In reserves, therefore, Louisiana ranks third among the various oil-producing states. South Louisiana Although 16 new fields were found in south Louisiana, the outstanding developments in that part of the state were not limited to new discoveries. In fact, most of the increase in reserve in that area has been most consistently accumulated through extensions of known producing sands and through the finding of new sands in already productive fields, especially at depths below the presently producing sands. Since data concerning most of the new extensions and sands are too extensive for discussion here, the more important developments arc briefly outlined below: Abbeville, Vermilion Parish.—Production extended ½ mile to the west. Anse La Butte, St. Martin Parish.—New oil sand discovered at 9400 ft., thus extending production to east flank. West flank defined by dry holes. Neste trabalho foi avaliado o comportamento de propagação de trinca por fadiga de cinco aços utilizados na fabricação de trilhos empregados na construção e manutenção de vias permanentes brasileiras, por meio da realização de ensaios de propagação de trinca por fadiga (da/dN x ?K), utilizando-se a razão de tensões de carregamento R = 0,7 e comparação com os resultados obtidos com R = 0,1. Vários modelos de previsão do comportamento em fadiga foram avaliados. Observou-se a influência de R nos valores mais próximos ao limiar ?KTH, com diminuição considerável no valor de ?KTH para R = 0,7. Dentre os modelos matemáticos usados no ajuste das curvas sigmoidais da/dN x ?K, o que forneceu melhor ajuste foi o ajuste de Hartman e Schijve. O parâmetro K? proposto por Kujawski reduziu os efeitos de R na tentativa de unificar os dados em uma única e estreita banda de dispersão, porém, na Região I da curva, os dados ainda ficaram bastante dispersos.

Os componentes automotivos em geral devem atender a especificações rigorosas de propriedades mecânicas, requisitos de limpeza inclusionária, entre outros. Enxofre e alumínio são dois elementos adicionados ao banho líquido, que têm papel importante na obtenção destas propriedades, mas que dificultam o processo de produção por lingotamento contínuo por favorecer a formação de partículas sólidas de alto ponto de fusão, que podem prejudicar a limpeza inclusionária e provocar a obstrução das válvulas de lingotamento. O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar e classificar as inclusões de corridas do aço DIN 38MnSiVS6 em escala industrial e avaliar estes resultados em conjunto com os dados de processo de aciaria e com os resultados de simulação termodinâmica utilizando o software FactSage 6.4. Foi observado que as corridas apresentaram tanto sulfetos de cálcio quanto espinélios, mas as primeiras, associadas a uma fração líquida menor na escória, tiveram uma correlação mais perceptível com a má lingotabilidade.

Because trade increased among various nations after World War II, the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe established a Classification Working Party in 1949 to develop an International system for classifying coal. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed in accordance with characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Terms for describing similar or identical coals differed in each nation. This caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade and also hampered exchange of technical information on problems of coal utilization. Experts4/ participating in the classification project early in their work agreed that two systems should be formulated, one for the higher rank coals or so-called "hard" coals in European terminology and the other one for the lower rank coals, the latter designated mainly as brown coals and lignites in the various countries. Rank refers to the degree of metamorphism (progressive alteration) in the natural coalification series from lignite and brown coal to anthracite. The system for classification of hard coals was published late in 1956 as a document of the United Nations.5/ Results of a study for applying this system to American coals were published in 1958.6/

Aços com teores eutetóides, tratados termicamente são usualmente utilizados em trilhos metroviários. Para que sejam atingidas as propriedades mecânicas desejadas para as devidas aplicações, o material pode ser submetido a alguns tratamentos térmicos, como, por exemplo, Recozimento Pleno, Normalização e Têmpera. Os tratamentos térmicos são de extrema importância, pois possibilitam uma grande versatilidade na utilização dos aços em geral. Neste estudo, as peças utilizadas são provenientes de um trilho metroviário e foram fornecidas pelo Laboratório de Pesquisa e Tecnologia em Soldagem da Universidade Federal do Ceará. Foram feitas análises metalográficas após diferentes tratamentos térmicos em peças do Aço SAE 1080 Fe-C com o objetivo de verificar os aspectos microestruturais e a sua inflências no comportamento mecânico das amostras e a alteração nas propriedades mecânicas. Pelo fato do material estudado ter uma matriz com composição perlítica de, aproximadamente, 100%, são mostradas as consequências devido à mudança nos espaçamentos interlamelares provocados pela aplicação de diferentes tratamentos e a influência da fase martensita na dureza do material.

Solution mining projects are conducted through one or more boreholes which penetrate en ore body. Proper drilling, completion and maintenance of the boreholes, therefore, is essential to the success of any solution mining operation. Wells drilled for solution mining encounter problems quite similar to problems encountered by the petroleum industry in drilling, completing and maintaining wells for the production of oil, gas or water. Many of the services developed and much of the experience gained by the petroleum industry is applicable to solution mining wells. As in the petroleum industry, each individual wellbore and ore body in a solution mining project provides its own problems. These vary greatly from well to well, and it is not possible to set down data or outline programs that will apply to all wells. Instead, the design of the drilling, completion, production and maintenance programs should be worked out for each individual well. The purpose of this paper, then, is to generally describe materials, equipment and techniques available for these programs and to discuss the purpose and sequence of their use.

S.; 2) limited wars; 3) political, economic, and/or pyschological warfare. Our present position as a major world power derives in large measure from our free institutions and great industrial productivity, and this productivity in turn depends on a continuing flow of raw materials-metals, minerals, fuels, and agricultural products. The U. S., with only about 6 pct of the world's population, uses from one to two thirds of the world's annual supplies of most metals and minerals. The U. S. strategic materials stockpiling program is designed to enhance our national security position: as stated in the preamble of the Stock Piling Act, to decrease and prevent wherever possible a dangerous and costly dependence upon foreign nations for supplies of strategic and critical materials in times of national emergency.

This work concerns the identification of weak zones in the structure of a rock mass endangered by outburst of gases and rocks in the Rudna copper ore mine at greater depths (approximately 1200 m). A special methodology has been undertaken for the recognition of that threat in the wake of an outburst in the mine in 2009. No similar phenomena have been previously recorded in KGHM Polska Miedz copper ore mines. The research described in this paper was carried out in the new part of the deposit prepared for mining. Geophysical methods were used: seismic tomography and borehole ground penetrating radar (BGPR), along with particular identifications using geological engineering methods. In the researched area, Permian layers of sandstone and shale clay (Weissliegendes formation) and of Zechstein dolomite (top of Rotliegend formation) and anhydrite occur in the copper ore deposit. The rock layers are characterized by variable thickness and intensity of mineralization, varying internal structure, and local fracturing containing different gases and water. It is assumed that accumulation of gases occurs in the tectonically fractured dolomite. The study was focused on the recognition of the structure and properties of the dolomite layer lying directly within the roof of excavations. The first tests were performed with seismic tomography for the recognition of anomalous changes in the elastic properties of the rock mass. The results of these studies were used to design a control borehole for a detailed geological engineering assessment and BGPR surveys with 100MHz antennas. Seismic tomography enabled the identification of changes in Pwave and S-wave velocity, the Vp/Vs ratio, dynamic Poisson's ratio and dynamic Young's modulus. It was clear that seismic anomalies required verification by other methods. The BGPR survey was performed in a specially designed borehole, passing through the selected seismic anomalies. While the borehole was being drilled, the outflow of gases was identified, with varying amounts of CH4, CO2, and H2S detected, as well as water outflow. The results of BGPR confirmed the location of a reservoir of water and gases, about 30 m in length, found in layer of dolomite. The direct cause of the BGPR anomaly was assumed to be intensive fracturing, a greater content of clay material in the dolomite, and the presence of water in the fractured zone. The BGPR image was correlated with information on lithology, fracturing based on the RQD index and additional information acquired during drilling about water and gases surveys and other symptoms. The achieved results also showed a very strong correlation between the location of the zone containing gases and water and the anomalous S-wave velocity and field of dynamic Poisson?s ratio, and to a lesser extent other seismic parameters. It was found that the other measured seismic anomalies may be of the same nature as those identified in the control borehole and accordingly will require the implementation of detailed identification. The performed tests have also shown the usefulness of geophysical methods to identify geodynamic hazards under the geological and mining conditions of the copper ore deposit in the Rudna mine.

Tendo como objetivo a melhoria contínua dos processos de laminação de produtos planos, foi elaborado um projeto de aplicação de modelos matemático-numéricos para a simulação dos laminadores de tiras a frio da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN). A premissa principal é a de que esses modelos permitirão relacionar as diversas variáveis operacionais com o perfil emergente da tira e, baseado na variação da coroa entre a entrada e a saída, estimar a qualidade da sua planicidade. O presente trabalho apresenta os principais modelos aplicados, informações sobre os ensaios realizados para tomada dos dados industriais e alguns dos primeiros resultados com foco no perfil e planicidade. Resultados preliminares indicaram a modificação da coroa dos cilindros de trabalho do Laminador de Encruamento, levando à redução da quantidade de tiras com ondulado lateral. Também foram obtidos resultados satisfatórios na simulação das cadeiras do Laminador de Tiras a Frio no. 1, que é composto de cadeiras 6-high e 4-high.

The chief purpose of this paper is to indicate the laws governing the fuel-economy of the cupola, to examine the feasibility of some of the proposals for increasing its fuel-economy, and to show that the conditions limiting fuel-economy here are altogether different from those prevailing in the blast-furnace. The two methods available for studying the thermal efficiency of the cupola and determining the factors limiting fuel-economy are: 1, by the determination of the total heat-balance; and 2, by the application of the theory of critical temperatures. The case selected as an example represents a cupola operating under fairly efficient conditions. The data are as follows : Cupola, GO in. in diameter, 15 ft. high to the charging-door, with a 9-in. lining. Bed-charge, 2,000 lb. of coke and 4,000 lb. of iron. Subsequent charges, 400 lb. of coke and 4,000 Ib. of iron. Total number of charges, 20. There was 800 lb. of coke recovered from the drop, hence the total coke burned is 8,800 lb., or 0.11 lb. of coke per Ib. of iron. Coke contains 90 per cent. of fixed carbon and 2 per cent. of moisture. 300 1b. of kindling-wood is used in lighting. 80 lb. of limestone (95 per cent. of CaCO,) is used per charge, or 0.02 lb. per Ib. of iron. Melting-loss, 4 per cent.; distributed thus : Fe, 3.5; Si, 0.25; Mn, 0.25 per cent. Average analysis of top-gases : CO2, 15.1; CO, 10.0 per cent. Average temperature of top-gases, 1,600" F. Temperature of air and stock charged, 60" F. Dew-point of air, 50 F. The items entering into the total heat-balance and their calculation are as follows: 1. The phases in Fe-C alloys over a wide composition range have been studied after splal quenching from the liquid state. Binary alloys containing 0 to 5.1 wt pel C as /cell as a large number of ternary Fe-C-Si alloys with 2.5 to 5.0 wt pct C and 0.3 to 5.1 wt pct Si were attlong those sludied. Olher Fe-C-X alloys, zcilh X being Co, Cr, ,Wn, Ni, and Ru , were also inrestigated after splat quenching. At high carbon contents, a new hcp phase (designaled 6 phase, but different from e carbide) is retained upon splat quenching. The .fraction of this phase varies up lo 97 pcl for a Fe-4.K-1.9% alloy. The composition of the E phase ranges from about 3.8 10 4.8 wt pet C, and the corresponding laltice parameters increase linearly ulith carbon content, while the c/a ratio remains essentially conslc~nl. The E phrtse appears to he a solulion of carbon in E iron, the latler being nornially found only at high pressures. It is deduced that the unit cell of the E phase corresponds to the formula Fe12C3, and llzal il is relaled to tlie ordered slruclures 0.f 6 iron carbide and c iron nilride. The E phase is compared and contrasted to the olher known carbides and nitrides of iron and nickel. TECHNIQUES for splat quenching from the liquid state have been utilized in numerous recent investigations to produce metastable phases in a variety of alloy systems. Among the several ways of splat quenching, the shock-tube method appears to yield the highest cooling rates1-3, 7, 8 and was adopted here. Estimated cooling rates attained in the present experiments ranged from 10' to 10 80Cper sec.' As a part of a research program on interstitial al- loy phases, the Fe-C system was selected for splat-quenching studies. It was hoped that splat quenching would allow high metastable supersaturations of carbon to be retained in solution. Also of considerable interest were the conditions governing the occurrence of the various intermediate phases upon solidification. The alloys investigated included both binary Fe-C compositions as well as six ternary Fe-C-X alloy systems. The known phases in the Fe-C system are summarized in Table I.* Only the ferrite and graphite are ent investigation.14 and is described in detail herein Table II summarizes corresponding data on Fe-N phases, which are also of interest here because of their similarity to the Fe-C phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by melting the elements. 99.9 pct purity, in an inert gas nonconsumable electrode arc furnace. The buttons. weighing about 5 g. were remelted twice. were then fragmented. and their interior surfaces were examined for uniformity: if any doubt existed. they were remelted again. Chemical analyses were performed on all the alloys. the accuracy being about k0.05 wt pct. At high temperatures, carbon-containing alloys react with alumina crucibles as follows: If the atmosphere in the splat-quenching furnace does not contain sufficient carbon monoxide the alloy can be depleted of carbon and contaminated with aluminum. Calculations and experimental observations showed that 50 to 100 torr CO partial pressure effectively blocked the above reaction in all the alloys investigated. The splat-quenching equipment in Figs. 1 and 2 provides for evacuation and back-filling with CO-Ar mixtures. The furnace is capable of operation up to 1650°C. and the gettering action of the graphite heating element reduces the oxygen partial pressure in the furnace atmosphere to below 10-5 torr, thus preventing oxidation of the specimens.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the sequence of principal chemical reactions taking place during the roasting of covellite (CuS). Practically all covellite is converted to digenite (Cul.SS) before oxidation to Cu20 begins. Part of the Cu2O is then converted to CuO, which in turn forms CuS04 through CuO?CuS04 as an intermediary. CuS04 and CuO'CuS04 decompose at 600° to 700° C to yield CuO and S03 (g) as final products. An overall mechanism is proposed for chemical reactions occurring at different interfaces of partially oxidized CuS pellets.

The report constituted a description and discussion of small-scale Preliminary studies. This great pyrrhotite or body has strategic value, inasmuch it contains considerable quantities of zinc, copper, and lead, as well as the iron rend sulfur. The recovery of the: copper, lead, and zinc, associated with certain of the pyrrhotite ore bodies, could augment our domestic supply of these metals.]

El deslizamiento superficial de tipo traslacional se encuentra al lado del pueblo Cercs, que pertenece a la región Berguedà de Cataluña; este deslizamiento tiene volumen aproximado de 250 m3, 12° de pendiente y la superficie de rotura se sitúa a 0.6 m de profundidad en roca altamente meteorizada. La caracterización geológica se realizó mediante mapeo superficial y tres sondajes manuales, las cuales permitieron identificar tres estratos; coluvial, argilita alterada y argilita inalterada; la superficie de falla del deslizamiento se ubica en estrato de argilita alterada. También, se efectúo la caracterización geotécnica mediante ensayos de laboratorio, donde se realizó 10 análisis granulométrico y límites de Atterberg, 3 ensayos de permeabilidad por carga variable, 5 ensayos de corte directo y 1 corte anular.

(Washington Meeting, May, 1965.) THE remarks of Dr. Rathbun in his address of welcome render it unnecessary that I dwell either upon the history or aims of the National Museum, and enable me to proceed at once with a brief descriptive outline of the Department for which I am responsible, and this with particular reference to that division devoted to applied geology. The amount of geological material brought together prior to 1876, under the various Congressional acts quoted, was, though valuable, comparatively small. It consisted mainly of the collections made by Professor J. D. Dana and his assistants during the Wilkes Exploring Expedition; by the various geologists accompanying the surveys of the Pacific railroads in 1854-55; the Surveys West of the 100th Meridian under the direction of the Engineering Corps of the Army; the United States geological surveys under direction of Dr. F. V. Hayden ; and the various Land Office surveys. Prior to 1873 there were no paid assistants to care for these collections. They were studied, if studied at all, by " collabrators," so-called, several of whom had offices and even sleeping apartments in the Smithsonian Institution. In the list of these collaborators are found such names as Conrad, Cope, Gabb, Leidy, Lesquereux, Meek, and Newberry. The building now occupied by the National Museum was designed primarily to make room for the great mass of material secured in 1876 at the close of the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. As completed in 1880, it afforded opportunity for expansion and incidental organization on much more practical basis than had previously existed. Thermal power plants convert thermal energy due to nuclear reactions or the combustion of coal, gas, heavy oil, or some other hydrocarbon to electrical energy. They consist of a variety of equipment, such as boilers, turbines, generators, cooling towers, and auxiliary equipment. Any factor that affects the equipment efficiency affects the overall efficiency. Analysis of the cooling tower and raw water using the Langlier Saturation and Ryznar Stability Indices showed that the cooling water at Sarchesmeh was slightly scaling with respect to silica. Cold lime softening was found to be a cost-effective method to produce cooling water with adequate properties to reduce the cooling water make up from 85 to 70 m3/h and blow down rate from 35 to 20 m3/h.
