The Bureau conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flotability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires but not particularly efficient. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish a fire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100 pet utilization.

THE physical properties of uranium have been reviewed by Katz and Rabinowitch.1 Their review includes thermal conductivity data for ternperatures above 375°K. Recently, Mendelssohn and Rosenberg' have published data on the thermal conductivity of uranium from 2" to 20°K. Our measuremerits indicate the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity in the temperature interval from 20" to 300°K. Electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power were measured on the same sample. The material studied was normal uranium which had been heated at 700°C in a lead bath for 10 min and then quenched in a water bath held at 50°C. From this material a rod M in. in diameter and 2 1/2 in. long was machined. Two 0.040 in. holes were drilled into the rod 1 3/4 in. apart. Copper-constantan thermocouples for temperature and potential measurements were soldered to copper pins which were pressed tightly into these holes. Details of the equipment and experimental techniques used in making the measurements have been described elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows micrographs of a section of the sample studied. Fig. la was taken with unpolarized light and shows impurity inclusions, probably uranium carbide. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Disseminated, gold-bearing sulfide minerals hosted in sheared, wall rock metasediments and clay alteration zones comprise one of the dominant styles of Palaeozoic orogenic gold mineralisation within the Reefton Goldfield, and is exemplified by OceanaGold’s Globe Mine. This study begins the exploration and characterisation of the gold-arsenic-antimony mineralisation hosted within the dominant lithologies of the Globe-Progress shear zone. The main gold-bearing sulfides are pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are not compositionally uniform across the Globe-Progress shear zone. Pyrite from the mineralised greywacke and argillite has higher As contents than pyrite in the host rock and pug breccia. Furthermore, the mineralised greywacke and argillite pyrite are enriched in As from core to rim. The 3D models based on bulk assays reveal a significant correlation in the distribution of Au, As and Sb. The interpolant for Sb envelops those for Au and As, which in turn are very similar to each other in their vertical and lateral extents across the shear zone. This result is consistent with earlier findings that the occurrence of stibnite represents a separate and likely later phase of mineralisation relative to that represented by the formation of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite both of which exert a stronger control on the distribution of As.CITATION:Durance, P M J, Christie, A B, McIntosh, C and Carder, M, 2015. The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

Neste trabalho, o comportamento eletroquímico das ligas Ti-35Nb-xTa (x = 0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5)Ta (% em peso), solubilizadas e resfriadas em água, foi investigado em meio de NaCl a 0,9% mol/L através de testes de polarização anódica e medidas de impedância, micrografias e DRX. Os ensaios eletroquímicos mostraram que as ligas contendo tântalo apresentam uma maior resistência à corrosão que a liga sem tântalo. Além disso, os ensaios eletroquímicos em conjunto com as micrografias e DRX indicam que a composição Ti-35Nb-5Ta é a que apresenta maior resistência à corrosão no meio estudado, pois além de ocorrer uma estabilização da fase ?, o refino do grão foi menos pronunciado e por esse motivo minimizou o surgimento de microcélulas eletroquímicas.

Geologic studies during development at Copper Flat were directed at acquiring the necessary information in evaluating a low-grade porphyry copper deposit. In addition to the geologic mapping and core-logging of a typical exploration project, these studies included: - careful checks on the sampling and assaying, - selection of representative samples used to establish the recoverable amounts of precious metals in the ore, - examination of underground workings driven to provide samples both for metallurgical testing and for assay comparison, - evaluation of plant site and waste dump areas as non-material, including a placer examination of the tailings disposal area, and location of an adequate water supply. All these investigation were carefully documented to provide the necessary data both for the engineering design and, more importantly, for the feasibility studies required for successfully financing the project.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S.C., was originally operated as a gold mines as late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast,Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered by Pardee and Parks. 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.During the 1940's the Chemical Engineering Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Electrotecbnical Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Norris, Tenn., investigated topaz from the Brewer mine to determine the possibilities of its use as mullite and for the production of calcium fluoride.From July 1950 through. April 1951 the Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling project at the Brewer mine to determine the grade and extent of the topaz deposits. Ten diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,344 feet, were completed, and 231 analyses of core samples were made during the course of the project.This report presents factual data relating only to the diamond-drilling project, The placer deposits on the Brewer property were previously investigated by the Federal Geological Survey 4/."

A aplicação de ligas de NiTi como biomateriais exige que sua superfície tenha um excelente acabamento final, para garantir a alta resistência à corrosão e a biocompatibilidade. O polimento eletrolítico é um processo capaz de diminuir as imperfeições da superfície, sem alterar as propriedades do material, e de formar uma fina camada protetora de TiO2. Nesse estudo, foram realizados eletropolimentos em fios superelásticos e com memória de forma, usando dois eletrólitos ácidos distintos. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que a solução de ácido sulfúrico produz superfícies mais homogêneas do que o de ácido perclórico, para os mesmos tempos de polimento, e se apresenta como uma boa alternativa para o tratamento superficial de ligas superelásticas e martensíticas de para sua aplicação como biomateriais.

The Bureau of Mines conducted flotation tests on a mixture of barite waste materials from Nevada in which essentially all of the barite values were finer than 20 micrometers. Flotation variables investigated in these tests were the effects of (1) sodium silicate as a pulp dispersant, (2) sodium hydroxide as a pH modifier, (3) increased amounts of sodium cetyl sulfate, (4) conditioning time and (5) solids content during conditioning. The optimum flotation conditions were achieved by adding 2.5 pounds of sodium silicate and 10 pounds of sodium cetyl sulfate per ton of feed and conditioning the pulp for 20 minutes at a 35-percent solids content. Using these conditions, a concentrate was produced that contained 94.7 percent BaS04, with an attendant recovery of 90.9 percent of the barite in the feed. In addition to the flotation tests, a selective barite flocculation process was developed to treat extremely fine barite. A barite concentrate containing 96.5 percent BaS04 with an attendant recovery of 82.1 percent of the barite was produced by selective flocculation. A process patent application has been filed based on this process.

Geology is frequently complicated, hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitching and usually soft or well-cleated. Due to competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines are operating, McIntyre and B.C. Coal. Several other mines are being planned, the method being evenly divided between hydraulic, longwall, and room and pillar. McIntyre mines in the flat part of their formation (up to 20 degrees) uses continuous miners and shuttle cars in the 3m and 6m seams. This company is considering a retreating longwall face. B.C. Coal operates a hydraulic mine in a 16m thick seam dipping at 10 to 55 degrees with a productivity of about 20 tonnes per manshift.

THE Eustis concentrator is located about nine miles southwest of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. The concentrator is served by a side track parallel to the main line, and all supplies for both the mine and mill are delivered at the mill yards. The concentrator treats 250 tons of copper-iron ore daily by preferential flotation, whereby, first, the copper sulphides are floated and the iron pyrite is depressed, and, second, the iron pyrite is reactivated and floated, resulting in an iron pyrite concentrate and tailing, the latter going to waste. During 1934, 71,709 tons of ore were treated, averaging 3.712 per cent copper and 32.1 percent iron, with a small amount of silver and a trace of gold. The recovery was 93.77 percent of the copper, and 70.43 percent of the iron as iron concentrate. The copper concentrate produced averaged 25.623 percent copper and the iron-pyrite concentrate averaged 42.13 percent iron and 49.173 percent sulphur. HISTORY The first mill at the Eustis mine was built in 1904 (1). For a few years previous to this rime, some jigs had been operated to concentrate the fines from the mine, the coarse ore being hand-sorted. Both the fines and sorted lump ore were shipped to acid plants. The building of the mill was based on test work carried out by Professor Robert H. Richards at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The method of concentration consisted in careful classification in a Richards classifier, which made six different sized products. These products went to Wilfley tables, where a concentrate, middling, and tailing were made. The middling was returned to the rolls. Crushing was done by a jaw crusher and two sets of rolls, resulting in a screen size of about five-mesh.

Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated at temperatures of 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C for sulfur concentrations up to 7.2 wt pct. Multisample crucibles contained the liquid alloys in a resistance-heated furnace using a technique especially designed for the study of more complex alloys to be reported separately. Modern free-energy data are used to correct the H2S:H2 ratio for dissociation of H2S and calculalion of the partial pressure of S2. Published data on the equilibrium are similarly corrected. Thermodynanzic treatment of the data employs the composition variable zs = nS/(nFe — nS) and the activity coefficient Gs = as/zs The data at 1500" and 1550°C are fitted by the equation log s = —2.30zs. Within the limits of experimental error the same coefficient is applicable to the data at higher temperatures. Equations are given for the free-energy change in Reaction [I] as well as for the solution of S, gas in the metal. The heat of solution of 1/2 s2 is -32.28 i2.5 kcal. Uncertainty in the free energy is very much smaller. For dilute solutions of interest in steelmaking, the activity coefficient of sulfur is unchanged from that listed in Basic Open Hearth Steel-making. DETERMINATIONS of the thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron by Morris and williams1 and by Sherman, Elvander, and chipman' provided a basis for control of sulfur in steelmaking processes. From the standpoint of understanding the chemistry of metal plus nonmetal in liquid solution they left several questions unanswered. The activity of sulfur in dilute solution at about 1600°C was well-established but temperature coefficients were uncertain, due at least in part to the use of the optical pyrometer and uncertainty regarding the effect of sulfur on emissivity. It appeared that deviation from Henry's law increased with increasing temperature, a most unusual behavior requiring either confirmation or disproof. These studies were based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction: At high temperatures H2S is partially dissociated so that the gas mixture contains HS, S2, and S in addition to HS. At the time of the earlier studies the free energies of these constituents were unknown and it was therefore impossible to make adequate correction for dissociation. Observations on the effects of alloying elements by Morris and coworkers1, 3 and by Sherman and Chip-man4 enable us to assess the effects of alloying elements on the activity and to make corrections for incidental impurities in the binary liquid. These studies as well as a number of more recent investigations will be reviewed in detail after out own experimental results have been presented. It was our purpose in planning this study to avoid uncertainties regarding the emissivity of alloys and the errors of thermal diffusion which plagued some of the early attempts,5 by using a resistance furnace and thermocouple in preference to induction heating and optical pyrometer. Modern data on free energies of the gaseous species are to be applied to our data and to those of other investigators to obtain corrected values of K1 and of the activity coefficient and ultimately to relate the sulfur content of the bath to the equilibrium partial pressure of S,. Extension of the study to include ternary and complex solutions will be described in a later section. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD a) Preparation and Calibration of H2-H2s Gas Mixture. The source of hydrogen sulfide was a preparer mixture of 43 pct H2S, balance hydrogen, contained in a large aluminum cylinder. This was passed through anhydrone and through a microflowmeter. Hydrogen was passed through platinized asbestos, ascar-ite, and anhydrone, and through a capillary flowmeter. Argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C, then through ascarite, anhydrone, and a flowmeter. The flow rate of hydrogen was kept constant at 200 ml per min, to which an arbitrary amount of the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide mixture was constantly added and then the prepared gas mixture was introduced into the reaction tube through a gas mixer. In certain experiments 200 ml per min of argon was added to the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide gas mixture to increase the total flow rate of gas. The ratio of hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas was checked for each run by chemical analysis. A sample of the gas taken from a bypass was bubbled through zinc and cadmium acetate solution (4 pct zinc acetate, 1 pct cadmium acetate, and 1 pct acetic acid) to remove hydrogen sulfide from the gas mixture, and the flow rate of the remaining hydrogen was measured by a soap bubble method to determine the volume of hydrogen. The amount of hydrogen sulfide absorbed in solution was determined by titration with iodine against sodium thiosulfate, with starch used as the indicator. The ratio of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen in the inlet gas could be kept within ±2 pct in the range from 10-2 to 5 x 10"4 which corresponds to from 0.2 to 7.0 wt pct sulfur in liquid iron. b) Furnace Arrangement. Os componentes da carga dos altos-fornos, que majoritariamente formam a escória final, consistem basicamente da ganga da carga metálica (minério, sínter, pelota), dos fundentes adicionados (quartzito, calcário, dolomita, etc) e da cinza do redutor (carvão vegetal ou coque). A estrutura da escória é formada por um conjunto de óxidos oriundos do processo de redução metálica e das impurezas da carga. As características de uma escória para uma máxima eficiência na operação do alto-forno devem ser: baixo ponto de fusão, fluidez e baixa viscosidade, tolerância, alta dessulfuração, remoção de álcalis. Com base nos argumentos destacados acima, tornou-se necessário o estudo de um método de cálculo eficiente para a viscosidade e da temperatura de liquidus da escória do AF2 da Vallourec Soluções Tubulares do Brasil - VSB.

Na busca de novas tecnologias para o processo de sinterização de minério de ferro, a recirculação dos gases de saída do processo podem proporcionar algumas vantagens em relação ao processo convencional. Para tal estudo, foi utilizado um modelo multi-fásico de sinterização para a avaliação da recirculação dos gases de saída do processo. Foram analisados cinco casos de recirculação dos gases de saída, do processo de sinterização, visando, sempre uma operação estável do processo. Os resultados de simulação indicam alargamento da frente de combustão com a recirculação dos gases de saída e a possibilidade da redução do consumo do combustível sólido. Como resultado, houve aumento da fração de cálcio-silicatos, proporcionando melhoria da redutibilidade do sínter, além da redução da emissão de CO2 e PCDD/Fs na máquina de sínter.

City of Manchester, NH, is implementing a 20-year plan to control and significantly reduce overflow of its sewer system. The long-term control plan had called for large scale box culvert installation through downtown Manchester. The City and the project team evaluated, and eventually selected, tunneling as an alternative to mitigate construction related impacts for open trench approach. This paper provides an overview of the alternative evaluation process; discusses the development of the preliminary design for the 12,000 feet long, 12-ft internal diameter tunnel, including plan and profile selection, subsurface conditions, drop shafts and the anticipated packaging of the separation areas.

In recent years, Southeast Florida water agencies have been collaborating to develop a regional water supply that is sustainable and affordable. The C-51 drainage canal was selected as a leading candidate for the construction of a water reservoir – named the C-51 Reservoir – to store raw water for future use. The reservoir will capture storm water that is currently lost to the Lake Worth Lagoon estuary for storage. Phase One, recently completed, is estimated to store 14,000 acre-feet and supply 35 million gallons per day (MGD) of raw water to participating utilities. In addition to sustainable water storage and supply, the C-51 Reservoir Project will reduce excess freshwater discharges to the brackish Lake Worth Lagoon and improve water quality. The reservoir would also serve to assist with flood control and Everglades restoration efforts The reservoir design includes a cutoff wall that runs the entire length of the embankment’s axis. The cutoff wall largely consists of a minimum 2.5-foot-wide soil-bentonite (SB) wall with a small section of a soil-cement-bentonite (SCB) wall where twin 96-inch diameter conveyance pipes for the gated control structure cross the cutoff wall alignment. The total length of the cutoff wall is about 20,400 feet and extends through a limestone stratum into underlying sands with a total depth of about 50 feet. The cutoff wall ties into an RCC embankment. This paper provides the approach to construction, quality, and lessons learned from the cutoff wall construction. "The basal type uranium deposits in south central British Columbia occur within unconsolidated, late Miocene fluvial paleochannel sediments that overlie major fault zones within the Okanagan Highlands Intrusive Complex. Prior to the formation of mineralization, paleovalleys containing host sediments were flooded by Pliocene valley basalts of the Plateau Basalt Formation. Five uranium deposits have been outlined to date, of which the Blizzard (4020 tonnes U) and TYee (650 tonnes U) are the largest. The basement intrusive complex underlying the deposits varies in age from early Cretaceous to Eocene and is comprised of quartz monzonite, granodiorite, Coryell monzonite, porphyritic granite and pegmatite.The mineralized host sediments comprise a complex sequence of interfingering conglomerates, arkosic sandstones and mudstones. Organic material is abundant in many, but not all, mineralized beds. Uranium mineralization is present in the form of uranous (ningyoite) or uranyl (saleeite, autunite) phosphates coating clastic grains and filling voids. Because of very strong reducing conditions related to large concentrations of marcasite and organic material, ningyoite is the only uranium mineral in the Tyee deposit, whereas the Blizzard deposit contains a more complex assemblage of minerals (saleeite, autunite, ningyoite). The observed paragenetic sequence of mineral precipitation in the Blizzard deposit (autunite-saleeite-ningyoite) indicates that the uranyl minerals, saleeite and autunite, are primary. Small amounts of Zn, Ni, Co and Mo have been introduced into the Blizzard deposit whereas Mo is the only non ore-forming element enriched in the Tyee deposit. Mn is the only depleted element in both deposits."

In the far north of Uttar Pradesh Province in the Indian Himalayas, the 280 MW Dhauliganga hydroelectric power plant is under construction by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), a state- owned enterprise, and a joint venture of Kajima Corporation of Tokyo and Daewoo Corporation of Seoul. This project sets out to develop the lower section of the mountain cascade of the Dhauliganga River, a tributary of the Sarda River, with a 311 m gross head. The 1360 km2 mountainous catchment area is bounded in the north- east by the Chinese border and in the south- east by the Nepalese border. The dam project is located in a remote area north of the principal town of Darchula of the upper Sarda valley, which is one of the seismically most active regions of India. The 56 m high rock fill dam, which will be the first of its kind in India, is faced with concrete and has a 1 m thick, at its crown 270 m long and over 70 m deep cut- off wall of plastic concrete below its toe. The cut- off wall, with a total area of 7500 m2, is constructed by a combination of Bauer hydraulic grabs, assisted by chisels and a Bauer BC 40 cutter which enables the overlapping joint system to be installed, guarantees optimum verticality and enables the cut- off to be keyed into the bedrock formation.
