"INTRODUCTION Barite is one of the major industrial minerals whose production has increased considerably in the last 10 years. In 1935 domestic production of barite was 218,075 tons and. had increased by 1944 to 515,136 tons. 3/ Most of the primary uses for barite and barite products were developed before 1935, so the increase in barite production reflects the growth of industry in general rather than any recent developments in barite technology.The principal uses for ground and crushed barrite are as a weighting agent in heavy drilling fluids, as a filler in rubber and other materials, as a pigment and extender in paints, and as a flux in glass melt. In addition, a considerable' quantity of barite serves as the raw material for the manufacture of lithopone and barium chemicals.Specifications for barrite vary widely and depend primarily on the use to which the material is put. The primary requisites for barite used in heavy drilling muds -are that it have a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and be very,low in soluble salts. A minimun barium sulfate content of 92 percent may be specified; but this is less important than the gravity. 4/ In addition before consumption the material must be ground to '92 percent minus 325-mesh. 5/ Lithopone and chemical manufacturers require a minimum of 94 Percent barium sulfate, a maximum of 1.0 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of fluorine. 6/ Barite used as fillers in light-colored products should be of fairly high grade, but the filler used in dark products may be considerably lower grade.Glass barite should contain a minimum of 96 percent barium sulfate, not more than 3 percent moisture, a maxium of 0.2 to 0.4 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of titanium oxide. Particle size is a matter of some importance in glass barite, also. 7/"

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the basis factors, as they become available through future experimentation and analysis.

For more than a decade the Pacific Northwest has been a frontier of successful porphyry copper-molybdenum exploration. This vast region (about 2100 miles long, 350-500 miles wide) occupies a geologically complex mobile tectonic belt. It parallels the Western Cordillera from northern California-Nevada to southern Alaska-Yukon Territory, and west from the northern Rocky Mountain-Tintina Trenches to the Pacific margin. Right lateral displacement has occurred along major transcurrent faults that are sub parallel to the region and the transform Fairweather-Queen Charlotte fault zone separates the North American continental plate from the Pacific oceanic plate. Porphyry-type deposits are widespread, but producing mines are restricted to south and central British Columbia. Size and grade are variable (25 to +300 mt; 0.18 to 0.65% Cu with 0.014 to 0.049% MoS2; 0.14 to 0.28% MoS,) and secondary enrichment is normally unimportant. Metallization is genetically and spatially related to late quartz-feldspar porphyries that are within, marginal, or satellitic to composite batholithic intrusions. Radiometric ages of the plutons range from Miocene to Triassic-Jurassic (18 to 217 m.y. [million year] ). Country rocks are typically eugeosynclinal metasedimentary and metavolcanic assemblages of Permian to Jurassic age. Several of the older (pre-Late Cretaceous) deposits formed in submarine island arc environments and they may be genetically related to occurrences of volcanogenic sulfides in the greenstone country rocks. Deposition of bornite-chalcopyrite-molybdenite ores is controlled by contacts, breccias, and fault-fracture zones. Associated hydrothermal gangue minerals include biotite, orthoclase, sericite, kaolinite, quartz, anhydrite, and tourmaline. Isotopic data suggest a deep source for ore, gangue, and plutonic host rocks. Significant exploration features include porphyries, dike swarms, breccias, potassic alteration, barren quartz cores, gossans, and fringing halos of pyrite and propylitic alteration.

Due to the known disadvantages of the use of iron silicate slag in the nickel converting stage, i.e., high metal losses, high magnetite content, and low fixation of impurities in the slag, the development of the new proposed "ferrous calcium silicate slag" for smelting and converting processes of nickel is very promising. Hence, considering the successful experimental results of using CaO base slag for the nickel smelting process, a study based on a detailed comparison for the phase equilibrium, and the minor elements distribution between the Ni3S2-FeS matte with either FeOx-CaO or FeOX-Si02 base slag was investigated. The main results are summarized as: no difference in the nickel losses between both slags was found at high nickel content in the matte, and the fractional distribution analysis for arsenic and antimony pointed out their preferential fixation in the calcium ferrite slag rather than in the iron silicate slag. Considering the energy and pollution issues, the technical feasibility of using calcium ferrite slag in a converting process of the Bessemer matte will have a prominent future for the nickel industry.

The Jurassic coals at Datong are characterised by their strong, massive sandstone and conglomerate roofs which fail suddenly over large areas, crushing pillars and creating destructive windblasts. collapsed areas have exceeded 180,000m2 and windblasts have extended over one km underground and 200m on the surface and have been accompanied by subsidence troughs on the surface. Scientific analysis has researched premonitory signs of caving and the nature of windblasts leading to considerations of alternative mining methods and ways of dissipating the energy of windblasts to reduce their damage and danger..

In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.

O Alto Forno 01 da ThyssenKrupp CSA entrou em operação em 12/07/2010 dando inicio a uma etapa em que o Brasil recebeu sua mais recente usina integrada, sendo um marco no modelo de planta compacta com o nível de capacidade instalada de 5 milhões ton/ano de placas. O modelo de controle de fluxo gasoso centralizado e com baixa marcha periférica havia se mostrado não adequado. Desse modo, foi implementado um monitoramento de indicadores para auxiliar na avaliação e controle de nível térmico e de distribuição de gás. Logrou-se obter uma estabilização da marcha do Alto Forno resultando em um melhor desempenho nas condições de escoamento, melhor rendimento de gás e, por consequência, redução do Fuel Rate, além de uma otimização no custo de carga metálica. Este trabalho mostra o desenvolvimento das práticas operacionais e de controle que permitiram essa evolução nos resultados.

A exaustão das reservas mundiais de minérios de ferro de qualidade, bem como o progressivo avanço das legislações ambientais, são tendências que têm motivado pesquisas acerca do uso de resíduos ricos em ferro e carbono para a fabricação de sínter metalúrgico para uso em alto-forno. Para tal, é necessário que se verifique o comportamento desses materiais nas condições termodinâmicas e cinéticas do processo de sinterização, bem como o seu efeito sobre a qualidade do sínter e sobre os parâmetros de processo da sinterização. Com esse objetivo, em uma primeira etapa do presente projeto de pesquisa, misturas representativas da prática operacional das usinas brasileiras, bem como misturas visando à maximização da reciclagem de resíduos foram testadas em laboratório em condições próximas às da sinterização. Os resultados de análises químicas e mineralógicas obtidos experimentalmente foram comparados com predições termodinâmicas de um modelo de equilíbrio multicomponente, havendo concordância satisfatória.

Solvent-in-pulp extraction of uranium from acid leach slurries of flotation concentrates is described. Solvent extraction was carried out in a 10 in. diam pulsed-plate column. The extractant was a 0.1 M tertiary amine (General Mills Alamine 336) in a kerosene diluent containing isodecanol as an emulsion suppressor and third phase inhibitor. In pilot plant operation at the Beaverlodge mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Ltd., slurry feeds containing up to 35% solids were processed at a throughput rate of 13.5 tpd of dry feed. Uranium extraction obtained was as high as 98%. Amine losses to the raffinate were approximately 0.07 lb amine per ton of original dry feed. The Beaverlodge Mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining employs a carbonate leach for the extraction of uranium from the ore.',' Prior to carbonate leaching sulphides are removed by flotation to reduce reagent consumption. This flotation concentrate containing some uranium is then leached with sulfuric acid, filtered, and the uranium precipitated with magnesium hydroxide. The precipitate is then returned to the carbonate leach circuit. Although the tonnage of flotation concentrate treated by acid leaching is low, reagent costs are relatively high. Also maintenance costs on the acid leach filtration circuit were beginning to show significant increases. The choice of solvent extraction-in-pulp as an alternative to the present circuit was influenced by the following factors: 1) elimination of acid pulp filtration, 2) increase in overall recovery because of soluble loss elimination, 3) reduction of reagent cost (mill sodium carbonate solutions are used as strip), and 4) production of higher purity precipitate at the mill site. Because a solvent-in-pulp process would be difficult to test on a bench-scale, the Eldorado experience in the use of pulse columns,3-5 mixer-settlers,6 and solvent-in-pulp operations in particular7 was applied directly to the initial pilot plant carried out during the summer of 1965 and followed by the second pilot plant in 1966. The latter work, which is presented in this paper, determined the following factors for anticipated scale-up to plant production: 1) overall uranium recovery by this process, 2) tonnage throughput expected, and 3) solvent losses anticipated for the full-scale plant. The equipment used consisted of a 10 in. diam extraction pulse column and three mixer-settlers for scrubbing, stripping, and acid equilibration. All equipment was designed by Eldorado and much of the pilot plant was built at the mill site. I have sketches of the radiators, and on this sketch up in here (indicating) we show the line from the fan-exhaust steam from the fan, and the trip spray at the mouth of the mine, which is usually near the tipple, the set of radiators on each side of the entry, exhaust steam exhausting in by the radiators, the small atomizers which I mentioned, and the man sprinkling at the hose. There are times, when at different times we have a man sprinkling during the day time, when he is out of the way, and during the night, sprinkling on the motor roads. I will leave that print up here and let you look at it and if you have any questions you wish answered, Mr. McAllister and myself will be glad to answer them. (Applause.) PRESIDENT PRYDE: . I am going to ask Mr. Hair to leave the sketch on the wall. From the back part of the hall, it is hard to see what is there. The figures are very important. I think one member of this association will be glad to know the cost of water, Friend Littlejohn. MR. LITTLEJOHN: I don't know as I want to ask any questions. The only thing I' would say about the cost there, it is very close to that cost that we tabulated for the Utah Fuel Company at the Utah mines here some time ago. We have not tabulated lately. It may be a little over that at the present time if you take the. labor costs and the material. costs. As I remember, some time ago we did get up some figures and it was, as near as I can remember, exactly two cents per, ton for the labor and material. We haven't got the radiators, etc., that the C. F. & I. have in their mines there, probably due to the fact that we have no shortage of water. We have plenty of that there, and our system is absolutely nothing more nor less than pipe lines, hose and nozzles and the man at the end of the nozzle. PRESIDENT PRYDE: I would like to ask Mr. Hair about the cost of the steam. MR. HAIR: That steam we use there in exhausting, of course, is from the fan, and we have a back pressure valve set right here (indicating), from three to four and sometimes five pounds, and the exhaust from the fan was a five or six inch exhaust, and our exhaust into the mine is nothing less than eight inches, and is practically low back pressure you might say, and all those large radiators, that I spoke of, are heated by live steam, and these probably take a little more coal, but as to just what that cost is I couldn't say. As far as the exhaust steam is concerned, you might as well use it in the mine as discharge it outside. MR. HARRINGTON: Mr. Hair, I would like to ask, is this installation on an intake haulage-main haulage course? MR. HAIR: Yes, sir. MR. HARRINGTON: In the winter time, when it is, say between five or ten degrees below zero, how far into that haulage road does the fogging go? MR. HAIR: Well, that goes in half a mile, sometimes in 3,000 feet. MR. HARRINGTON: Wouldn't that interfere pretty seriously with the motor? MR. HAIR: To some extent, but I wouldn't say seriously enough to interefere with the production of coal. We have one mine we are working in two and three-quarters miles. Our mines are all pretty deep, and we don't find it objectionable. I don't believe that it interferes in the production of coal. I don't believe it makes any more difference between a real cold day in winter time than it does in the summer time. MR. A blindagem adicional de veículos militares usualmente possui uma camada de placas cerâmicas justapostas e coladas sobre um material dúctil, por exemplo, de aramida ou alumínio. Elas devem propiciar proteção balística em toda sua superfície, complementando a blindagem estrutural dos veículos. Suas placas cerâmicas são relativamente leves e muito eficazes na destruição da ponta de um projétil, no impacto balístico. Contudo, há limitações nesta solução, porque a linha de interface entre as placas é uma região vulnerável, pela ausência de continuidade material ao longo desta linha, onde a eficácia das placas fica mais comprometida, quanto mais próximo da borda uma placa for atingida por um projétil, como mostrado por simulação computacional. Foi desenvolvido um dispositivo cerâmico, à base de alumina com nióbia, com o objetivo de aumentar a proteção ao longo destas regiões vulneráveis. Resultados de ensaios balísticos comprovaram a fragilidade das interfaces e a eficácia do dispositivo desenvolvido.

Descrevem-se as ações adotadas para a evolução da qualidade de aços ultra baixo carbono com alto teor de silício, destinados a aplicações eletrônicas. Com o propósito de conhecer o comportamento metalúrgico do material durante o processo de laminação foram realizados ensaios de dilatometria, que permitiram a determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fase. Foi evidenciado que, nas temperaturas de processo praticadas, a laminação no trem acabador ocorria na região intercrítica, gerando variações bruscas de propriedades mecânicas no processo, levando a instabilidade operacional. Esta condição de laminação foi corrigida, direcionando para laminação em fase ferrítica. Foram necessários ajustes no modo de operação na linha de tiras a quente e a criação de controle automático de temperatura na entrada do trem acabador. Após as ações foi possível melhorar a qualidade do produto final, em relação às dimensões e forma do produto, reduzindo as perdas internas e retrabalho.

This paper will discuss the Final Tunnel Linings which were placed in 6700m of a 2.32m inside diameter precast concrete lined interceptor sewer tunnel in Staten Island, New York. Two methods were employed to install the final tunnel linings. One method involved forming and placing a polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete cunnette invert, followed by an arch pour. The second method involved the jacking of reinforced concrete pipe into the tunnel, followed by a low density cellular concrete backfill grout. These two methods will be described and compared.

Observations are presented of the formation of annealing twins during the growth of a recrystallized grain into a striated, melt-grown crystal of high-purity lead. The formation of an annealing twin resulted in replacement of the original migrating boundary by a large-angle grain boundary of the caincidence-site type or by a near-twin boundary. The results support the Fullman-Fisher theory of annealing twins and demonstrate the usefulness of the coincidence-site model. FULLMAN and Fisher1 have advanced the following theory to account for the formation of annealing twins during grain growth. Whenever a grain A grows into a matrix of grains S1 and S2, a twin A' of grain A may form, as shown in Fig. 1, if the following energetic condition is satisfied: where "E" and "a" refer to the specific interfacial free energy and the area, respectively, of the boundaries indicated by the subscripts. In effect, the twinned grain will persist when the energy of the boundary between the twin(A') and the matrix grain (S, or S,) is less than that of the boundary between the original growing grain (A) and the matrix grain by an amount which exceeds the energy of the coherent twin boundary between A and A'. This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology's photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.

Os aços inoxidáveis possuem características essenciais para um bom acabamento quando o que se busca é estética e boa resistência à oxidação. O acabamento polido é muito utilizado em utensílios domésticos, eletrodomésticos e ponteiras de escapamentos de veículos. Em muitos casos são expostos à elevação de temperatura sendo sujeitos à oxidação a quente que pode causar o amarelamento da superfície desses aços. Através de ensaios de oxidação a quente, potencial eletroquímico, microdureza e tensão residual via difração de raios-x foi possível perceber uma diferença entre os acabamentos brilhantes via laminador com cilindros polidos e acabamentos obtidos pelo polimento de rebolos de panos e pastas abrasivas. O ensaio de tensão residual mostrou qualitativamente que o aumento de dureza e o forte amarelamento ocorrido no material com acabamento polido pode ser em função de uma deformação elástica na superfície imposta durante o processo na linha de polimento automático.

"Microseismic systems at five mines in the Sudbury Basin provide the basic data for Falconbridge Limited's rockburst research. Daily and long-term analysis of this data as well as underground observations has confirmed the fault-slip mechanism of rock bursting at three mines. A detailed analysis of the complete history of Falconbridge Mine is being conducted and Distinct Element numerical models are being used to simulate both the stick-slip behaviour of faults and the dynamic effects of the induced vibrations on rock and backfill. University research includes acoustic tomographic imaging of the rock mass based on seismic wave propagation and collection of full micro seismic waveforms to allow application of advanced seismic and statistical analysis techniques. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Limited currently has five mines operating in the Sudbury Basin: East, Lockerby, Onaping, Fraser, and Strathcona Mines, which along with the Falconbridge open pit produced 2.8 million tonnes of ore in 1986. The underground mines range from about 600 m to 2000 m below surface and one of the consequences of mining at these depths is the occurrence of rockbursts.Research into rockburst phenomena at Falconbridge began over 25 years ago and research is continuing in an effort to avoid the problem by improved mine design, to protect mine openings from damage by design of effective support systems and to better understand the processes which precede a major fault slip rockburst. Since the early 1980s, significant progress has been made due principally to micro seismic monitoring and advances in microcomputer technology coupled with detailed underground investigations.It is now possible to identify the fault-slip mechanism as the cause of many of the rockbursts which occur at Falconbridge mines. By gaining an understanding of effect of mining-induced stresses on the pre-existing geological structures, areas which may experience rock bursting can be identified and can be protected against severe damage by appropriate support techniques."

Com o objetivo de encontrar uma solução inovadora e de baixo custo para o tratamento de efluentes domésticos, foi desenvolvido e implementado na ArcelorMittal Tubarão um sistema de tratamento utilizando escória de aciaria LD. O sistema, que se compreende de um Tanque de Recebimento; Tanque de Sedimentação; Filtro de Escória; e Redutor de pH foi objeto de estudo e teve sua eficiência medida em relação a sete fatores: Demanda Química de Oxigênio, Demanda Biológica de Oxigênio, E. Coli, Fósforo Total, Fósforo Dissolvido, pH, e Sólidos Suspensos Totais. De maneira geral, o sistema mostra-se eficiente, com destaque para as excelentes taxas remoção de E. Coli, Fósforo Total e Fósforo Dissolvido. O controle do parâmetro pH através de um método de baixo custo ainda representa um fator a ser superado, que quando consolidado permitirá uma nova aplicação para o material no tratamento de efluentes domésticos e rurais.

Dentre os mecanismos de desgaste existentes o desgaste por abrasão é responsável por cerca de 50% de todo o desgaste gerado. Alinhado à busca do desenvolvimento de novos mercados para o aço inoxidável, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia, para a medição da taxa de desgaste abrasivo de diferentes aços. Uma politriz foi escolhida para o ensaio devido à possibilidade de controlar a força, tipo de abrasivo, vazão de água, tempo e velocidade de rotação do disco. Para o ensaio foram preparados corpos de prova do aço P410D com dimensões de 40x40mm. Os corpos de prova foram fixados em suportes de baquelite e este conjunto foi acoplado junto à politriz. Após a escolha dos parâmetros ideais para o teste foram realizados testes comparando a taxa de desgaste de diferentes tipos de aços permitindo ranqueá-los de acordo com sua resistência ao desgaste abrasivo.

Understanding and quantifying residual risk is the key to the successful closure and rehabilitation of mines. An important aspect of residual risk is predicting the long-term chemistry of mine water and the long-term geochemical stability of mining wastes. This requires updating the characterisation data for mine wastes and monitoring mine drainage throughout the life-of-mine. The intrinsic properties of waste materials (ie the geology, mineralogy and the weathering processes, which in turn depend on the local climate and water balance in a waste storage facility) are the fundamental controlling factors of residual risk. In this paper, case studies of coal and metalliferous mines are used to discuss the definition of residual risk for a range of waste storage facilities and to highlight the benefits and limitations of current geochemical methods in predicting and quantifying residual risk.
