The first step in a quantitative analysis ot the mechanism of oil displacement by water in a fractured reservoir is usually conceded to be the solution of the differential equation describing the saturation distribution of two immiscible fluids flowing in a porous medium, where the capillary pressure is taken into account. In such a system the production mechanism may consist of displacement of oil both by the flow of water due to natural or artificially imposed pressure gradients and by imbibition, which implies a flow of water not due to external pressure gradients. Owing to the presence of the two oil displacement mechanisms, the mathematical model given by the differential equation intended to describe the system may not properly represent the behavior of the physical system. In fact, in the reservoir the rate of water advance may be very slow, and in the case of a fractured reservoir with a great number of large fractures, the pressure difference determining the flow of water through the matrix may be much less than 1 lb/'psi over lengths of a few feet. In such a case, imbi-bition (the exchange between oil in the matrix and water in the fractures resulting from capillary forces) may become, with time. a significant element of the production mechanism. It occurred Lo the authors, however, that without going into a physical analysis of the process of production, it might be possible by means of simple abstract reasoning to throw some light on the variation of recovery with time under conditions occurring in a highly fractured oil reservoir with rising water table. The object of this paper is to present both the reasoning and its application to a reservoir of the highly fractured type. Specifically, the analysis given here was undertaken to try to explain the increase of recovery (as defined later) with time as observed in this reservoir, without having to assume unlikely variations in the reservoir parameters with depth. This attempt has been successful as will become clear upon comparison of the computed recoveries with the actual field data. ABSTRACT MODEL Let us consider a small volume. of porous matrix saturated with oil at time, t = 0. Let the process of oil displacement by water start at time, t = t,,. At some time, t, the process will have terminated. Then a volume of oil equal to or smaller than the original oil contained in the matrix will have been produced. The first basic assumption that describes the model and guides the forthcoming reasoning is that the oil production from the small volume. dv, is a continuous monotonic function of time and that it converges to a finite limit. Such an assumption is not inconsistent with the results of laboratory waterflood tests as well as with results of imbibition tests where this is, in fact, observed. The second basic assumption is that none of the properties which determine the rate of convergence change sufficiently during the process to affect this rate or the limit. Let it be assumed that the form of the function of time relative to production from the matrix volume. dv, is given by where V,(t) is the volume of oil produced up to that time t. CONSTRUCTION OF RESERVOIR FROM ABSTRACT MODEL Let the reservoir consist of a series of identical blocks of porous matrix stacked vertically and separated by fractures. Let each of these blocks satisfy the conditions of our abstract model. These conditions are: (1) that recovery is a continuous mono-tonic function of time converging to finite limit, and (2) none of the properties that determine the rate of convergence change sufficiently to affect the rate or the limit. Let water be rising in fractures so that oil production from any part of the block starts when the water comes in conLact with it. "Grain orientated microstructure was developed for the improvement of ceramic characteristics. Novel polarized light microscopy was developed to examine the grain orientation quantitatively. The degree of grain orientation was estimated from the retardation determined with a Berek compensator. The method was essential to determine a minor grain orientation, which could not be analyzed by means of conventional X-ray measurements. The data were favorably related to ceramics characteristics. The comparis of the ceramics with various degree of orientation was very important to explain the change of ceramic characteristics with processing.IntroductionMicrostructure with grain orientation has a high potential for greatly improving characteristics of ceramic. However, there has been strong restriction on processing and material for developing this structure. It has been crucial to apply forming methods involving high shear such as injection molding1). Grains must have an elongated shape.In recent years, much attention has been paid on the effect of high magnetic field on diamagnetic materials2)3)4), Many ceramic materials are known to be diamagnetic. High magnetic field has a high potential to orient grains. The principal driving force for grain orientation is the magnetic anisotropy of material, which is generated by non-cubic crystal symmetr5). This method of grain orientation is not restricted by grain shape, and can be applied to all materials having non-cubic crystal structure.This study uses alumina as raw materials, and produces alumina ceramics with orientated grain in high magnetic field (10T). Alumina has a magnetic anisotropy due to hexagonal crystal structure. The degree of grain orientation in the green and sintered bodies will be examined and their relevance to magnetic field will be discussed."

Underwater intervention operations have been supported by robotic systems such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV) for a long time. In particular challenging scenarios such as the deep sea, the use of ROV systems for environment awareness is in fact the main tool of choice. With the technical advances in autonomous robotics, there is an increased effort in substitute ROVs whenever possible for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). These systems don't have tether and thus provide large advantages from the operations and logistic point of view. However the limited options for underwater communications render them impracticable for many tasks were real time environment awareness and direct human control is needed. Emerging applications in underwater mining, both at sea [1] and in inland flooded mines [2] pose additional requirements in terms of operation support needs and environment restrictions. Two main tasks are to be addressed by assisting robots in these underwater mining operations: providing adequate environment awareness for human operators and obtain precise realtime 3D environment modelling (particularly relevant for the mining planning). The use of ROVs with umbilical cable, has in this case large limitations due to the nature of the mining cutting (performed by dedicated systems) that limit manoeuvrability and pose high risk of cutting the cable or damaging the vehicle. In this paper we present EVA (Exploration VAMOS AUV) an innovative hybrid ROV/AUV system developed for operations support in inland underwater mining operations. This robot is always operated without tether, and the can be used in a wireless ROV tele-operation mode using very short range high bandwidth underwater communication systems and in autonomous AUV mode.

The Bureau of mines evaluated the elution of uranyl carbonate from a strong base resin with a mixed carbonate eluant in a fluidized system. The system consisted of a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) elution column with a continuous flow of solution, except for short periods when the resin increments were withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl carbonate from the mill-loaded strong base resin with an eluant composed of 1.0 [M] NaaCOs plus 1.0 [M] NH4HCO3 was studied. The effects of solution flow rate, aqueous-to-resin flow ratio, column diameter, compartment height, initial resin concentration, and column length were examined. The experimental data indicate that for the eluant examined, a resin residence time of 240 minutes is necessary to attain 90-percent elution efficiency. Also provided is a technique for sizing an elution MCIX column form pilot plant experimental data.

"The aluminum industry generates about 90 million tonnes of red mud each year. Previous research shows it could be utilized as a refining flux with a high capacity to absorb phosphorus and sulphur from hot metal in the steel industry. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the melting properties of such fluxes, as it affects the effectiveness of the flux. The results show that the melting behavior of red mud is strongly affected by lime addition and the characteristic melting/softening temperatures reach minimum VALUES (at 32.7 wt% CaO. From these findings, a correlation was established between melting behavior and optical basicity. This allows one to adjust the composition of the flux based on the process requirements. INTRODUCTIONThe aluminum industry generates about 90 million tonnes of bauxite residues each year. This residue is usually red in color because it contains a substantial amount of iron oxide. The red mud, as it is called, is a solid waste with a high concentration of sodium oxide, high pH (10 to 13), and high alkalinity, and thus is harmful to many forms of life. Traditionally, the material is stored in large tailings ponds within the plant’s vicinity (Power, Grafe, & Klauber, 2009). Development of solutions for safe disposal or preferably using this residue for other industrial processes or applications could help restore polluted locations and eliminate a negative impact on the environment (Haake, 1988; Power et al., 2009; Yan & Xuegong, 2010).The mineralogy and chemical composition of red mud depends on the quality of the bauxite and refining process parameters. In general, it consists of iron oxide (Fe2O3), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium oxide (TiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O), silicon oxide (SiO2), and calcium oxide (CaO) (Power et al., 2009). Like most ores and soils, bauxite can contain trace quantities of metals such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, and naturally-occurring radioactive materials, such as thorium and uranium. Most of these trace elements stay in the residue (Power et al., 2009)."

"The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence in western New Brunswick is hosted in the Poplar Mountain volcanic complex (PMVC), which is located along the southern segment of the regional Woodstock fault zone. The PMVC consists of three principal units including, in ascending order, a porphyritic felsic volcanic unit, a volcaniclastic unit, and a mafic volcanic unit. U-Pb dating of zircon indicates that the age of the volcanic rocks is younger than 459 ± 3 Ma, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mineralization-associated sericite indicates that the age of mineralization is 411 ± 3.7 Ma. Gold-mineralized zones occur in all the lithologic units but mainly in the porphyritic felsic volcanic unit. Gold zones are not controlled by individual faults but are characterized by high-density brittle fracturing, thin carbonate-quartz veining, and intensive ankerite-sericite alteration, superimposed on an earlier chlorite-calcite- quartz alteration. Gold is associated with arsenopyrite, which mostly occurs as disseminations in the host rocks, and to a lesser extent with quartz-carbonate-sericite veins and quartz-cemented breccias.Geochemical data indicate that mineralization-associated alteration is characterized by enrichment of K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba, As, Sb, W, C, and S. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the mineralizing fluids are composed of H2O, salts, and CO2 with variable amounts of N2 and CH4; salinities range from 2.3 to 10.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, but mainly from 2.3 to 5.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, and homogenization temperatures lie mainly between 220° and 270°C. Fluid pressures at the site of mineralization are estimated to have been 770 to 1200 bars, corresponding to a depth of 2.9 to 4.6 km at lithostatic pressure. The d18OSMOW and d13CPDB values of mineralization-related ankerite range from +14.5‰ to +16.5‰, and -6.8‰ to -8.3‰, respectively. The d18O values of the ore-forming fluids are estimated to be 6.4‰ to 8.3‰ at a temperature of 250°C. These carbon and oxygen isotope data fall in the field of magmatic fluids and in part the field of metamorphic fluids.Considering the geological setting of the region, abundant granitic intrusions, the similarity between the age of mineralization (411 ± 3.7 Ma) and the nearby Pokiok batholith (402-415 Ma), and the enrichment of granophile elements in mineralization-related alteration, the ore-forming fluids were probably derived from a granitic intrusion underneath the PMVC. These fluids were focused along structures related to the Woodstock fault. The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence might be compared to some granitic intrusion-related gold systems based on the geochemical data presented herein. The wet preconcentration of haematite, comminuted by high-pressure grinding roller was studied, using the cylindrical ferromagnetic medium. The effects of various factors including rod diameter, rod gap and background magnetic field intensity (BMFI) on the performances of preconcentration for different size fractions and the force analysis of single mineral particles with different diameter in the separation zone were emphatically investigated. The results showed that as the rod diameter increased, the rod gap decreased, and the BMFI increased the tailings grade and the tailings yield reduced while the concentrates recovery raised that was regardless of variations in feed size distribution. For the -3.2+0.18mm size fraction preconcentration, the magnetic medium with a rod diameter of 4 mm and a rod gap of 7 mm at BMFI of 454kA/m is used to get a higher performance. For -0.18mm size fraction preconcentration, the magnetic medium with a rod diameter of 4 mm and a rod gap of 4 mm at BMFI of 263kA/m is used to get a higher performance. After the classifying preconcentration, at the optimum condition, the overall concentrate grade increases by 9.56 percentage points and the concentrate recovery is up to the 82.67% with a tailing grade of 10.68% and a tailing yield of 40.31%. The magnetic force, exerted on weekly magnetic minerals was proportional, to the specific susceptibility and square of BMFI. For the same BMFI, the magnetic capturing force on coarse particles increased, and that on fine particles decreased with the increasing of rod diameter. For the lean locked-particles, considering the gravity and viscous resistance of particles, rods with a big diameter were beneficial to the capture of coarse particles and had no influence on the capture of fine particles, while rods with a small diameter were good for the capture of fine particles and not suitable for the capture of coarse particles of lean locked-particles. THE meeting" of the Rare Minerals and Metals Committee was held Monday afternoon, Feb. 17; Donald M. Lidclell, chairman, presiding. The first paper (T. P. 279), "Progress in the Use of Tantalum," by George W. Sears, was read by Mr. Smyth. Dr. Sears' paper contains an interesting summary of the uses, alloys and ores of tantalum and a resume of present method of reduction. The uses of tantalum is based on its extreme rise to the reaction of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current. Tantalum, as an alloy material, has received considerable study and many alloys have been reported. Among them three types appear to .be most prominent, alloys of high melting point, hard alloys and acid rising alloys. As the estimated quantity of tantalum in the earth's crust is less than that of gold, it must be looked upon as n rare metal. Australia is the greatest producer and the Black Hills of South Dakota produce minor amounts. As the one type of mineral available contains both tantalum and columbium, the extracting and metallurgy of tantalum are difficult chemical processes. Greater simplicity in this and the development of a market for columbium would undoubtedly be of great benefit to the tantalum industry, andl make for a greater use of tantalum produced.

WhEN mechanical twins initiate cracking it has been proposed1 that the friction stress for dislocation motion, in the Cottrell criterion for brittle fracture2 should be replaced by the stress required to propagate a twin, ttp. TF is the fracture stress, d the grain diameter, ß a geometric constant, u shear modulus, and y the effective surface energy. Since TTp is likely to vary with grain size, it cannot be substituted by a constant in Eq. [I]. If an expression for the energy change caused by a twin in a stressed material could be obtained, it is in principle possible to compute the critical size of the twin, i.e., the size at which the system can decrease its energy spontaneously, as a function of applied stress, thus giving the stress required to just barely propagate the twin, i.e., TTP. Consider a circular twin disc with a radius r and having a lenticular cross section, Fig. 1. Twin dislocations3 of strength b exist in the twin boundary parallel to the twin plane, one loop on each atomic plane. IN the early fall of 1025, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. labora-tory, New York, experiments directed to-ward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point. The apparatus consisted of a vertical I-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside. The cathodes were broken to pass 3/8-in. mesh, and a current of various differ-ent gases was passed up through a 4-in. long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to 1500° to 1600°F. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr. The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode par-ticles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc., had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500°F." Smoot's reaction, after a few moments considera-tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me." The writer and his assistants, W. H. Osborn and H. H. Stout, Jr., after confer-ring as to ways and means, decided to go ahead with preliminary laboratory experi-ments, which, it was thought, would move the new process from the possible to the probable. This program followed a course indicated by three basic considerations: I. Since brittle cathodes were often unin-tentionally produced, it seemed probable that the laws controlling this type of deposi-tion could be ascertained. 2. We had already proved the gas-clean-ing feature. 3. There remained to prove: whether a sound, homogeneous metal billet could be produced with crystal growth established over the entire surface of each individual particle in the billet; and, if so, what would be the physical properties? Osborn arranged with Columbia Uni-versity for conducting experiments in its research laboratory to prove or disprove the third item; Columbia assigned C. A. Phillipi, Jr. to assist in the project. A press with a cylinder 2 in. high and of I-in. dia. was used. It was surrounded and heated by a resistance coil of Nichrome wire. Broken tough cathodes were used.

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

The crystallisation behaviour of low melting point CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions greatly affect the deformability of inclusions during the rolling process. The crystallisation characteristics of CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-MgO melts representing the oxide inclusions in Si-Mn killed steel were systematically investigated. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallisation change were analysed under a fixed CaO/SiO2 in the complex inclusions. The continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) experiments were conducted. The results showed that the increase of MgO content increases the crystallisation ability of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions, while the increase of Al2O3 content has the opposite effect. The viscosity, liquidus temperature of oxide melt and also the initial crystallisation potential might be the reasons for the change in crystallisation behaviour. Also, the crystallisation activation energy could semi-quantitatively characterise the crystal growth during the crystallisation of inclusions. To obtain low melting point plasticized CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO (CaO/SiO2=1) system inclusions, the Al2O3 content of the system needs to be controlled larger than 15 wt per cent and the MgO content should be kept at a small amount.

As part of the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), a large-scale column test using bacteria and a sulfide ore was conducted at McClelland Laboratories, Inc., in Sparks, Nevada. Four technology providers participated in this demonstration. A mining company in Nevada provided the sulfide ore, process effluent and make-up water. A process effluent column, a chemical oxidation column, and the four biological treatment columns were set side by side on a test pad outside the laboratory building. The process effluent and chemical oxidation columns were used for experimental control. The goal of this project was to evaluate the viability and feasibility of using these biodegradation technologies to reduce the cyanide to the regulatory level of 0.2 parts per million (ppm) within an acceptable timeframe and with low operational costs. The column testing began on December 3, 1998 and operated until May 17, 1999. One technology provider reached the regulatory level within the 158 days. The remaining three biotechnology columns were approaching the regulatory limit at completion of the demonstration. The MWTP is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is jointly administered through an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

"Post-disaster reconnaissance of areas affected by earthquakes has documented extensive damage to buildings with shallow foundations located in liquefaction-prone areas. Currently, estimation of liquefaction settlement is based on empirical correlations that evaluate settlement in the free-field environment and are based on one-dimensional consolidation. However, observations have shown that liquefaction settlement under buildings can be considerably greater. This research is based on a series of 1- g shake table experiments using a transparent soil box to reproduce liquefaction-induced building settlement. Building settlements were evaluated using a scaled model of a building foundation representing a 1-2 story building. Comprehensive parametric study was carried out to establish the effects of several parameters on free-field and building settlements such as building width and thickness of liquefiable soil layer. The experiments utilized accelerometers and pore-water pressure sensors to monitor ground accelerations and buildup of pore-water pressures in both the free-field and model building footprint. Results of these experiments are compared to available centrifuge tests and field observations and conclusions are drawn with respect to the potential scaling effects. Lastly, this paper discusses the feasibility of installing helical piles as a mitigation strategy to reduce the building settlements by presenting some of the exploratory experimental data obtained from this series of 1-g shake table tests.INTRODUCTIONThe 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence and the 2011 Great Tohoku earthquake are some of the most recent examples where large numbers of low-story structures sustained damage resulting from liquefaction-induced settlements. This damage has commonly been observed in residential and commercial areas developed over loose, unconsolidated and saturated coarse grained soils resulting from both natural and man-made deposits. Damages incurred from the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence occurred in the largely unconsolidated fluvial environment bordering the Avon River in Christchurch (Henderson 2013). Similar damage was also incurred during the 2011 Great Tohoku earthquake where liquefaction of soils occurred in both young alluvial deposits and fill materials (Ashford et al. 2011). Figure 1 presents typical modes of failure to structures resulting from the effects of liquefaction. Current practices in evaluation of liquefaction settlement rely on empirical correlations (Tokimatsu et al. 1987; Ishihara et al. 1992) developed for liquefiable soils in the freefield environment (Dashti et al. 2010a). However, recent observations of the performance of foundations suggest that settlement of rigid shallow foundations in liquefiable soils are commonly greater than those predicted in the free-field. Therefore, new correlations should be developed to better predict the degree of settlement of shallow foundations in liquefiable soils. Current research is beginning to focus on the mechanisms of settlement during liquefaction in regards to confining stress, pore-water pressure and shear stress induced from foundations (Dashti et al. 2010b)."

Binder, as a necessary functional material of electrode in lithium ion battery, has a vital influence on the electrochemical performance. The humics, coupled with polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), were used as a water-soluble binder for LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode using in lithium ion battery. The techniques of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge were conducted to evaluate the performance of humics binder in LFP electrode. The reversible specific capacity of LFP (HA + PAM + CMC) electrode can reach to 142 mAh g−1 after 50th cycling (100 mAh g−1) on conditions of raw materials with 1 wt% PAM addition, humics and CMC with a mass ratio of 3:1 in binder, and the raw materials mixed in an interval order. Humics has the potential to be used as a novel, eco-friendly and high-efficient binder for lithium-ion battery.

The word "mine" means different things to different people. To a professional in the mining industry, it may mean trucks and shovels, overburden dumps, headframes, mill buildings, and the other conventional nuts and bolts that constitute an operating mine. To an environmental- ist it may mean bulldozed trees and tailings dams. To a mining engineer who has spent a significant proportion of his career in mine and prospect evaluation, it can mean a hole in the ground with a liar at the top. The liar in this case is frequently not so through design but through ignorance. The purpose of this paper is to contribute in a small way to en- lightening that ignorance. In doing so, it will foster more effective deployment of the pool of risk capital available to the industry.

"This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division, held at Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 11 to 14, devoted two days to technical sessions and two to field excursions. A representative attendance of 250 to 300 engineers and operating officials engaged in oil production marked the sessions and paid close attention throughout to a notable series of highly technical papers. Restricted as the program was to consideration of production problems only, the time proved too short for discussion or even the presentation of the 20 papers submitted. Much informing and pertinent discussion none the less took place, and the sentiment was general to the effect that the meeting was one of the best ever held by the Division. The meetings were held in the auditorium of the Municipal building and local arrangements were well looked after by the Mid-Continent Section of the Institute and the Oil and Gas Association. The combination of the three organizations served to bring together engineers and operators most usefully. F. Julius Fohs, chairman of the Division, presided at the sessions on Monday. Tuesday morning John M. Lovejoy of the local section took over this responsibility in the absence of T. E. Swigart, who was detained in California. The afternoon session was presided over by A. G. Heggam of the Oil and Gas Association and the Tuesday evening banquet by W. C. Franklin of the same organization.

FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.
