The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.

"Quality control of drilled shafts is greatly dependent upon the practices of the site personnel. For drilled shafts cast under slurry, inspection of the hole prior to concreting is very difficult or impossible. There are numerous non-destructive test (NDT) methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shafts. This paper will discuss the theory and use of an emerging NDT technology known as Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). The Thermal Integrity Profiling method measures the elevated concrete temperatures that occur during the hydration process. These temperature measurements are made along the length of the pile and can determine the integrity over 100% of the pile cross section, both inside and outside the reinforcing cage. With the known shaft volume information, TIP can evaluate the effective shaft radius at each measurement location. With the increased use of TIP on highway projects, there is a need to have standard criteria for shaft acceptance. Shaft acceptance criteria can be based upon thermal measurements and subsequent analysis of the data to determine the average shaft radius, local concrete cover, and cage alignment. With this additional information obtained via the thermal testing method, acceptance methods based upon concrete cover can be developed. In this paper the Thermal Integrity Profiling method will be described, results from a case history will be discussed, and an acceptance criteria based upon concrete cover will be proposed.INTRODUCTIONDrilled shafts are an attractive foundation element in many applications due to their large axial and lateral capacities. When drilled shafts are cast in a dry hole, it is possible to inspect the hole prior to casting, allowing for very basic level of quality control, although the shape of the completed element is still unknown without some form of post construction testing. When drilled shafts are installed where soil conditions are unstable, the shafts will often be cast under slurry to support the surrounding soils during the construction process. When casting a drilled shaft under slurry, it is very difficult to impossible to accurately and efficiently inspect the hole prior to casting concrete and it is equally difficult or impossible to inspect the shaft during the casting process"

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

"Thermodynamic investigations on fcc solid ternary Fe-Ni-Cr alloys have been performed by means of the computer-aided Knudsen cell mass spectrometry. Ternary T.AP.-series (Thermodynamically adapted power series) are used for the algebraic representation of the thermodynamic excess properties. At 1650 K the molar excess Gibbs energy GE is negative over the whole field of stable fcc phase. The molar heat of mixing HE is exothermic in the predominant part of the fcc phase field. Only between the section with a constant ratio of mole fraction Xcr/XNi = 0.64 and the fcc phase field boundary the HE values are slightly endothermic. The results of this work can be used successfully for phase diagram calculations.IntroductionThermodynamic investigations on multicomponent alloy systems such as the Fe-Ni-Cr ternary system including the three binary boundary systems are very time-wasting and usually beset with considerable experimental difficulties. Additionally, the required experimental equipment is very expansive and the obtained results are not always satistying. Therefore it is understandable that many phase diagram calculations are based only on few experimental values of the molar excess free Gibbs energy GE. Consequently, Kundrat and Elliott [1] as well as Hillert and Qiu [2] used in their reassessments of the phase diagram of the Fe-Ni-Cr system thermodynamic data mainly assumed and/or optimized by means of various reasoning.Lee [3] reported recently, a revision of the used thermodynamic description of the Fe-Ni liquid phase is necessary to obtain a better agreement with the experimental data on the bcc/liquid or fcc/liquid tie lines and liquidus temperatures in the Fe-rich region of the Fe-Ni-Cr ternary system than in the previous assessments. This is 'in full agreement with mass spectrometric investigations of Fe-Ni alloys in the liquid and in the fcc solid phase, published earlier [4,5]. Indeed, phase diagram calculations based upon the molar excess free Gibbs energies GE obtained in these studies yield liquidus and solidus lines in excellent agreement with experimental phase diagram data [5]. Nevertheless, these experimental data have not been considered later on any more, not even in the revision by Lee [3]."

In rock- or ore-crushing tests all data, in order to be valuable for study and comparison, should be obtained and tabulated under conditions as uniform as possible. The results of many such tests have no value for comparison, because of incomplete data and the lack of uniform conditiops, screens and scale of sizing, etc. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a form of standard specifications which may be developed by the Milling Committee and approved by the A. I. M. E. for rock-crushing tests. It is not intended to discuss any theories of rock crushing. Reports of rock-crushing tests should include the following details: 1. Description of the machine employed (jaw or gyratory crushers, rolls, stamps,tube mills, Chilean mills, etc.), 2. Method and material (timber, concrete, etc.) of foundation. Much power is dissipated in the vibration of poor foundations. 3. Locality from which the rock or ore was obtaincd, and geological, mineralogical, and physical characters of the material. 4. The power consumption of the machine running with no load and with full load, the unit of power being 1 hp. per 24 hr, 5. The capacity of the machine in tons (of 2000 Ib.) per 24 hr. 6. The duty in tons per horsepower-day. 7. The screen analysis of feed and product by the proposed A. I. M. E. standard screen scale. On the foregoing statement, the following remarlrs are offered. Toughness of Rock Table P shows the relative crushing duty of the same machine on three different characters of rock, all other crushing conditions being the same. This table indicates that the specific resistance of the rock to crushing, may affect the crushing duty of a unit of power as much as 300 per cent. Perhaps this quality may be called toughness. A physical model has been developed to simulate the flows and mixing of gases in the waste of a longwall retreat coalface. The model is used in conjunction with computational modelling, and the distributions of permeability and gas emission in the model waste follow those in computer simulations (Pokryszka et al 1996). The physical model represents at 1170th scale a 200 m long, 3 m high coalface with a waste extending up to 280 m to the face start line. The model is tilted to the same seam slopes as the real face, e.g. 22° ascensional ventilation along the face and 7" slope to the dip. The purpose is to investigate the flow of three components: ventilation seepage flow through the waste; methane; and nitrogen injected to quell spontaneous combustion. A heavier-than-air surrogate gas (SF,) is used in place of methane, and therefore the model is inverted so that gas layers form along the 'roof". The main forces driving the flows in the waste (pressure gradients due to ventilation and the density difference of gas layers) are kept in proportion by appropriate scaling of the permeability. Calibration and validation used data from a coalface at a mine in the Lorraine coalfield. The model is now in operational use.

The potential of hydrogen peroxide explosives was introduced to Thomas Gustavsson and Robert Håkland by Dr Miguel Araos through his development of hydrogen peroxide gel compositions (HPG). In 2020, Thomas and Robert developed a concept project with Boliden Minerals and received Swedish government funding to evaluate HPG technology in a mine environment. The project showed HPG reacted violently with mine mineralization and concluded that HPGs did not offer a commercial solution due to safety concerns. Thomas and Robert engaged with Stefan Nilsson to develop hydrogen peroxide emulsion (HPE) compositions and the process techniques to manufacture them. In 2021, laboratory work produced a promising low carbon intensity, nitrate free, ammonia free, emulsion formulation based on industrial grade hydrogen peroxide and a fuel-emulsifier phase. Design and construction of an HPE pilot plant and underground charging unit commenced. The manufacture of hydrogen peroxide emulsion shares several similarities with the production of nitrate-based emulsions in that the plant is a facility to blend a strong oxidizer solution with a liquid fuel phase into a finished emulsion. A key differentiator between HPE and nitrate-based emulsion is that the manufacture of HPE is a cold production technology in that neither the oxidizer phase (HP) nor the fuel-emulsifier phase requires high temperature heating to prepare raw materials. A successful proof-of-concept HPE evaluation ran from April 2022 to October 2022 at Boliden’s Kankberg underground mine in Sweden. This evaluation demonstrated HPE technology's safety, performance, production, handling, and indicative environmental benefits.

Dimensional stone processing has become an important part of the world extractive industry, and today?s total stone block yearly production is estimated to be around 134.000.000 tons and is still growing by an average yearly rate of approximately 20%. In future, the same production will become an important part of the mining industry and presently, in some countries it represents even the main mining output. New environmental regulations, together with landscape and nature conservation requirements, create a number of difficulties in setting up new open pit dimensional stone quarries. As a result, many dimensional stone producers have recently started to apply underground techniques in order to produce the ornamental stone blocks intended for further processing. Underground production of stone blocks requires special mining methods and so far it has not been a cost-effective excavation method for all types of rocks. Presently, this type of stone excavation is generally applied in sedimentary and marble deposits because the rock has small to no mineral quartz content. When starting a new underground dimensional stone mine, it is necessary to analyse the impact of all primary factors which are crucial to set up a technically and cost effective advanced underground dimensional stone mine. The role of physical and mechanical properties of the rock, geological conditions, mineralogical composition, micro-tectonic state of the site, rock mechanic conditions on the site, durability and saw ability of the stone are decisive factors in foreseeing the future methods of extraction. The laboratory research work as well as the field work, is very important in decision-making aimed to choose the future excavation method. Also of equal importance is the serious market research, because it renders the indication of selling price potential. Having obtained the results from both types of research, mining engineers can design the mining methods which optimize financial return to the mine. The practice approved by 15 years of testing in the underground limestone quarry of Kanfanar gives future producers very useful advice and general data to facilitate the process of exploration intended to establish new similar underground quarries.

Large-scale methane releases in dual salt mines have resulted in ignitions and mine fatalities as recently as 1979. Several past studies have implied that hazardous methane occurrences in U.S. salt domes are distributed neither uniformly nor randomly, but are geologically controlled and potentially predictable. A first step by the Bureau of Mines in addressing the problem of methane in deal salt mines required development of a new test to determine volumes of gases in solid salt samples. This report considers the results achieved when 80 deal salt samples were tested for gas content by dissolution in a controlled atmosphere chamber. Criteria were organized to delineate salt types based on geological occurrence. Outburst samples range from 0.014 to 7.4 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, anomalous salt samples from 0.0027 to 2.6 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, and normal salts from less than 0.0003 to 0.31 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl. The presence of higher hydrocarbons was most common in samples containing larger quan¬tities of methane. The presence of higher hydrocarbons appears to be useful in detecting methane hazards where some methane may be lost before gas content testing. An exploratory rotary and/or core drilling program, dissolution testing for gas content, and up-to-date geologic mine napping could allow a mine operator to assess methane hazards in dual salt.

"Surface changes in naturally occurring metal sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and molybdenite) due to treatments from high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) at varying times were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analysis of the obtained results revealed common patterns and differences in surface transformations. The transformations were found to include two main stages. The first stage was observed at low treatment intensities (up to n ~103 pulses). At this stage, formation and accumulation in the surface layer of the nonstoichiometric sulfide phase, oxides and hydroxides, as well as elemental (polysulfide) sulfur and/or metastable sulfur species (thiosulfate, sulfite) was observed. The second stage (N = 3·103 pulses) is characterized by thermal removal of sulfur species and renewal of the mineral surface (sulfidization).It was found that the chemical changes of the sulfur on the surface layer of pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite included accumulation/formation of S0 (Sn 2-) at the first stage of the transformation, followed by its removal. An increase in the surface concentration of elemental sulfur for pyrite and chalcopyrite was 10–12% while arsenopyrite was approximately 5%. A more complicated chemical change was observed for sphalerite and galena, that included formation/accumulation of metastable sulfur species (thiosulfate, sulfate) at the initial stage (up to 103 pulses) and during longer treatment times, the sulphur is reduced back to its initial state (sulfide or disulfide). The increased concentration of S0 sulfur, compared to the original sample, was only 3% in galena and sphalerite.The application of HPEMP treatment to improve flotation selectivity is supported by singlemineral flotation tests. Changes in flotability as a result of HPEMP treatment are principally explained by surface phase changes that resulted in higher adsorption activity."

Due to urban subway tunnels mostly built in the cities with highly density buildings, the geological and construction conditions is complex, especially certain sections of the subway tunnel will pass through from the foundation of the overpass, therefore the stability and surface deformation control of that section’s tunnel excavation is particularly important. Taking Xi'an Metro Line Three interval tunnel as a research object, we have used FLAC3D simulation to analyze the tunnel’s surrounding soil deformation and tunnel lining stress distribution under bridge foundation with shallow buried covered excavation method. Analysis results show: (1) After the excavation of the tunnel right line, due to the bias of the upper bridge foundation the right of the tunnel showed relatively large deformation. In order to ensure the construction safety, we recommended using the grouting anchor reinforcement on the right side wall to further control the deformation zone. (2) The maximum vertical displacement of the ground occurred in the right wall of the tunnel portion which was due to the intensity of soil outside the grouting range of the arch is low, as a result the deformation is larger; this position requires special attention, strengthening the monitoring measurements of this part is necessary to avoid the large deformation and other adverse effects of the upper portion of bridge foundation. (3) The maximum vertical force area of the initial lining of the tunnel is in the middle of the side wall, while the second lining in this part of forces is smaller, thus at the beginning of the construction of the liner, attention should be paid to this area. On-site grouting or steel bracing reinforce support may be used if necessary.

This report summarizes the results of a review of foreign coal mining literature conducted under the Bureau's Advancing Coal Mining Technology program. In addition to a discussion on the historical development of mechanized longwall systems, and the current state-of-the-art method in Europe, this report summarizes the previous and ongoing Bureau efforts to adapt longwall technology to U.S. conditions. The bibliographic section of this report, divided into major categories such as mine design, face management, roadway development, strata control, powered roof supports, coal winning, conveying, and automation, contains over a thousand individual entries. The purpose of this report is to provide U.S. mining engineers with background information on longwall methodology and equipment developed in foreign countries (principally Europe). The Bureau of Mines, as part of its Advancing Coal Mining Technology program, is funding R&D projects to demonstrate that the longwall mining method, successfully used in the deep mines of Europe, can boost productivity and improve safety in certain U.S. mines.

Natural rocks are frequently exposed to groundwater and complex geological conditions. Environments with water presence are more susceptible to chemical corrosion, which notably affects rock’s micro properties. Generally, the pH of acid mine drainage in hard rock mines can be low to 5, and the pH of quarrying waste deposits can be below 3. With the expanding scope of mining engineering in aquifers and salty areas, chemical corrosion can also caused by different types and concentrations of anions. The anions can significantly affect rock’s mechanical properties. Therefore, it is critical to emphasise the impact of anion and acid on the mechanical and micro characteristics of rock. This paper commences with an introduction to representative corrosive environments. Then the UCS tests are conducted on granite samples corroded by chloride ions and sulfate ions. Anion has negative effects on the strength of granite. The reason is that certain minerals can react and be dissolved by anions and hydrogen ions, such as Al2O3. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the roughness of the fracture surface increases with the anion concentration. The effect of acid is notably more pronounced than anion on the micro properties of granite. The initiated fissures and pores also increase with the concentration of SO42- and Cl- ions, which is the micro explanation for the impact of anion on rock strength and stability. Subsequently, the permeability of the granite specimens is tested. The reason that granite performs insensitivity to acid and anion is attributed to its low permeability and high content of inactive oxides, such as quartz. To summarise, anionic and acidic conditions can slightly deteriorate the mechanical and micro properties of granite. While SO42- demonstrates a higher level of corrosiveness on granite than Cl-.

"Abstract - "Les Mines Selbaie" is a large, generally low-grade, polymetallic (Zn, Cu, Ag, Au) "giant" volcanic-associated ore deposit in the Harricana-Turgeon belt, which is part of the northern Abitibi Subprovince of Quebec. Economically recoverable mineralization occurred in three zones: the A1 (open pit), A2, and B Zones (underground). The pre-mining resource was 54.9 Mt, including 8 Mt of sub-economic, locally silver-rich massive pyrite. In the Selbaie region, calc-alkaline andesitic volcanics form the "basement." The Brouillan Volcanic Complex formed within an islandarc setting on this regional basement. Evolution of this complex involved the formation of a felsic magma chamber and the development of a large caldera structure over the Brouillan batholith. Second- order linear and sub-parallel faults and rifts developed as a result of back-arc rifting/extension. The edges of these rifts were feeders for linear felsic volcanism (similar to fissural volcanism). During felsic volcanism, the feeder zones acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids with associated pervasive potassic alteration. The alteration is characterized both vertically and laterally by well-defined quartz, sericite, K-feldspar and/or, locally, biotite halos, to produce a mushroom-shaped morphology. This K-feldspar alteration is not common in most other volcanic-associated ore deposits. Mafic dikes cut all of the geological units and appear to occupy earlier synvolcanic structures. Regional greenschist- assemblage metamorphism and pervasive deformation affect all units. Thrust faults moved part of the Brouillan batholith and basement units over the Mine Sequence. Although there is no relationship between the earlier mineralizing events and these late thrust faults, the thrust faults probably played an important role in location of ore lenses. Three types of mineralization are present: 1) copper-rich veins and hydraulic breccias; 2) disseminated and stringer, low-grade and high volume zinc-copper mineralization; and 3) finely laminated, massive, locally silver-rich pyrite mineralization within structural basins. At the bottom of these basins and at the contact of welded acid tuff (WAT) units, massive pyrite zones are locally enriched in zinc, and contain the possible vestiges of black smoker-like material. The ore metals were probably derived from leached basement andesitic volcanics in a hydrothermal system powered by one or more heat sources within the Brouillan Volcanic Complex. The Selbaie deposits are mainly characterized by: (1) the presence of small volcano-tectonic subsidence basins, which host chemical sediments and volcaniclastic materials; (2) pervasive potassic alteration; (3) locally high-grade silver mineralization (up to 1-2 kg/t Ag); and (4) the presence of random zones of Pb mineralization. The Selbaie deposits can be closely compared with the copper-rich Murgul deposits, which belong to the eastern Pontides metallogenetic province in Turkey. If conventional classification criteria for the volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (e.g., Noranda, Mattabi types, and recent subsea floor deposits) are taken into account, the Selbaie deposits still exhibit many differences in terms of alteration assemblages, physical volcanology and some styles of mineralization (low-grade and large volume). Consequently, the "Selbaie" deposits belong to a new sub-type of volcanic-associated sulfide deposit, which may be used in future exploration programs."

Hydro generators installed in Itaipu Binacional power plant with 824/737 MVA rated output power (50/60 Hz) belong to the largest ones in the world. Among many unique features the generators are equipped with the largest hydrodynamic thrust bearings ever built (external diameter 5200 mm, axial load equals approximately 3600 t). This paper is an attempt to propose a new thrust bearing design with the use of the state-of-the-art technologies and simulation techniques that demonstrate a reduction of friction power losses generated by the thrust bearing. This paper is divided into two parts. Within the first one the original thrust bearing design which was implemented in the generators is described. Related calculation results based on a thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) calculation software used by Alstom will be presented. A comparison between measurement results gathered in the 1980’s is given. In the second part a potential solution of a more beneficial bearing design is described. The proposed thrust bearing design modification is an implementation of Alstom’s PolypadTM coating. This modern polymer (PEEK) coating material has already been used by Alstom in projects around the world for many years. This coating allows pushing the operating parameters limits toward higher temperatures and lower oil film thicknesses far beyond the limits known for the conventional bearing materials.

Newell1 has shown that hydrogen is removed from steel in a vacuum at a temperature of 500° to 900° C. within 136 hr. Holm and Thompson2 also state that, especially when the hydrogen is high, the results obtained by extraction at 800°C. agree with those obtained by vacuum fusion. In this laboratory, an apparatus was designed (Oct. 1940) and used wherein the piece of steel was heated at 100°F. in a Torricellian vacuum (Fig. I). This vacuum was produced by raising and lowering a "leveling bottle or bulb" containing mercury. Extensive tests were made with this apparatus. The weakness of the procedure was the possibility of leakage of air into the tube around the rubber stopper at the bottom. The present plan is to raise and lower the mercury by applying vacuum from a mechanical pump, to the top of the tube and then to a bottle of mercury in which the bottom of the tube is immersed. The Apparatus The extraction is made in a Pyrex tube A, I in. i.d. It is drawn down at the top at N and an 8-mm. i.d. tube is welded on it. To this a Pyrex stopcock E, 4-mm. bore, is welded. The tube between N and E is preferably 8 in. long and is graduated in milliliters. The total length of A to the stopcock is 28 inches. Heat is supplied by a split-tube furnace. 0 in. long by 6 in. in diameter, hinged on the side. A short pyrometer couple P is inserted through the walls of the furnace. In use this is standardized by comparison with a standard couple in a I-in. tube, just opposite this short couple. In the I-in. tube A a glass rod R, flattened at one end, supports the sample S and the length of R is so adjusted that the sample is in proper place. (It may float in the mercury.) The tube A is inserted in a large rubber stopper to fit the bottle B and extends nearly to the bottom. It is so placed that the handle of the stopcock faces the operator. In this stopper also is a short tube D bent at right angles for the application of vacuum. Also in this stopper is an 8-mm. tube C reaching nearly to the bottom; this is bent so as to miss the heater and again bent to bring it in line with and as near as possible to the upper and reduced part of tube A. On this tube C is welded a 4-mm.-bore stopcock H. In order that the two tubes may be as near as possible, the handle of stopcock H faces the back, or is the reverse of stopcock E. The total height of II above the bottom is 28 in. As explained later, this is the pressure-measuring tube C. The bottle B is about half full of mercury. The mercury must cover the ends of A and C by about I in. when they are evacuated. By tees T and rubber tubing RT the tubes A, C and D, the latter through the three-way stopcock M, are connected to the vacuum pump. "The production of alumina from bauxite using the Bayer process generates the residue known by red mud. This material can be used as a source for concentration and recovery of valuable metals such as titanium. The greatest difficulty of concentrating titanium compounds is the large amount of iron oxide present in red mud > 30% by weight. This paper shows the extraction of the iron oxide, increasing the concentration of the titanium compounds. The red mud is leached with H2SO4 at 30% concentration and temperature range of 60°C, 80°C and 90°C. Analysis of the leached and concentrated was made to verify the effectiveness of the iron oxide extracting process and the titanium compounds concentration viability.2- IntroductionIn the state of Para is located the Industrial Unit Alumina of North of the Brazil S/A (Alunorte), created to produce and commercialize alumina, aluminum oxide, Al2O3. The ALUNORTE with Aluminum Brasileiro S/A (Albras) and Mining Rio do Norte S/A (MRN) complete the production cycle of aluminum in the state. Although the production of alumina has a importance great for the socio-economic status, as in any area other, generates a amount large of waste, thus causing environmental impacts. Pará State has produced 25 million tons of bauxite (Pinto, 2010), of which 60% were transformed into alumina plant in Pará and Maranhão by ALUNORTE by ALCOA, generating approximately 9,000,000 tons of waste known as Red Mud (RM). Due to the high reactivity this material is considered dangerous, and currently there is no operating process capable of reuse all the material produced at any refinery. The search for industrial processes in order to reuse these wastes can contribute to reducing the overall impact of the production process of alumina. In this context, this paper estudied, within the research line of Solid Waste valorization the mining industry and metallurgy, a process that makes possible the red mud as a source of raw material, in other words, seeks to maximize the use of red mud as raw material for concentration and or recovery of titanium compounds in both the crystalline form of anatase, rutile and ilmenite, avoiding the predatory extraction of natural resources of these materials. Applying definitely the concept of self-sustainability of the mining industry and metallurgy."

Hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also the C2 through C5 paraffins, the C2 and C3 olefins and possibly the C4 and C5 olefins, are byproducts of coal formation. Although it is generally believed that coal formation occurred at temperatures below 200° C, most experimental work on gas formation from coal has been performed at temperatures between 200° and 1,000°C. The objective of this Bureau of Mines experiment was to determine if observable changes in the gases from coal could be produced at temperatures below 200° C in relatively short periods of time. The experiment involved heating coal samples from six coalbeds at constant temperatures and analyzing evolved gases. The composition of the gases at three temperatures was compared. At 35° C, over 99 pct of the gas is methane; at 125° and 150°, methane constitutes approximately half of the hydrocarbon gas. Isobutane and pentane are the predominant higher hydrocarbons at temperatures between 100° and 150° C.
