The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2005 draws upon available information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. It provides data on exploration budgets by global region and mineral commodity and identifies significant mineral discoveries and exploration target areas. It also discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based on these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2005. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities in 2005 compiled by the USGS.

These rolled single-crystal sheels are characlerized by anisotropic hardening, retention of ductility with warm working, lattice bending which is related to the conlacl (angle, and macroscopic dimensional changecs in the length bid not the width of the billet. When several slip systems become operative, a greater degree of work hardening is itztvoducetl into the crystal. This rolling- condition is characlerized by isotropic hardening, loss of ductilily with warm working, complex lattice distortions, and macro-scopic dimensional changes in both the length rind Width of the billel. IN tungsten, the {1 10}(111) slip systems are operative below room temperature,' while above 700°C only the {112{ (111) slip systems are observed.2,3 In the transition region, i.e., room temperature. both systems appear. It is the purpose of this investigation to show that tungsten single crystals deformed by rolling at a temperature where only one slip system is operative generate dislocation substructure which depends on the crystal orientation. For a specific crystal orientation. the resulting dislocation substructure can be further influenced by modifying the rolling procedure. Crystals oriented for multiple slip display less substructural sensi- tivity to modifications in processing techniques than do single crystals oriented for duplex slip. Under simple slip modes of deformation, very little work hardening is introduced into a rolled single-crystal sheet. Mechanical properties such as room-temperature strength. ductility, and hardness are used to confirm the existence of the different work-hardened conditions generated within the crystal by modified warm-rolling techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. Single-crystal billets of four different crystal orientations. grown by the Arc-Verneuil technique. were ground to a size of 0.25 by 0.375 by 3 in. In terms of their rolling plane and rolling direction, the billets had the following orientations: (1101 [001 ] (110) [110] (001) [110] (001) [100] The actual orientation of all crystals was within 5 deg of the ideal orientations. The typical impurity content of the crystals is given in Table I. Polishing and Etching. Polishing was done elec-trolytically in a 20 g per liter aqueous solution of NaOH at approximately 10 v. It was established by the Laue back-reflection X-ray technique that the surface damage due to grinding and cutting operations with a diamond wheel did not exceed 0.001 in. Therefore after each cutting or grinding operation at least 0.002 in. was removed electrolytically from the surface in order to eliminate surface effects. By lowering the voltage to 3 v, subgrain boundaries and individual dislocations are identified in agreement with Berlec 4 where the etch-pit traces on a cubic plane form a square. The etching time was about 5 sec at room temperature. Rolling. Rolling was carried out on a Loma 2-high mill (Model 600). The peripheral velocity of the 6-in.-diameter rolls was 500 in. per min, with the surface temperature of the rolls about 400° to 450° C The billets were heated before each pass for 30 min in argon to 1000 C. Oxidation of the crystals during rolling in air resulted in a thin layer of greenish-yellow WO 3 This oxide was removed after each pass by immersing the crystals for a few minutes in a boiling NaOH solution. Prior to the initial rolling pass, a surface layer of 0.001 in. was removed by polishing. The crystals were then annealed in vacuum (10-4 torr) at 2400 C for 30 min. Increased competition in today’s global economy has put mineral industry under excessive pressure to effectively manage production assets to generate business wealth. Capital intensive industry (CII) organizations are seeking ways to manage skill resources, internal processes, and organizational networks with a view to reduce the cost of ownership of assets and increase efficiency of operations and service. The emerging concept of Enterprise Asset Management(EAM) is a collection of business processes that allow CII with right focus on return on investment on assets, to make right decisions on planning, acquisition, maintenance, operation, rehabilitation, and disposal of assets. Information technology (IT) can drive significant returns if the infrastructure covers seamlessly all business processes and all systems, like geographic information system, maintenance management, investment management, laboratory information management, and supervisory control and data acquisition system. The simple approach to IT in the past with disconnected silos of technology, information, and business processes cannot deliver the expected benefits under the modern business environment. Identification of business and application component is a prerequisite for the development of an asset management system that links effectively disciplined processes having characteristics of agility, speed, and integration. This paper discusses various issues and outlines the steps for developing an asset management roadmap in an organizsation. It also presents major business and application components of the system. A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. The California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) is the nation's first legislation establishing a statewide mineral resource policy governing mining activities that recognizes regional needs and retains local autonomy. The Southern California Rock Products Association supported this proposed legislation. It was through our efforts that SMARA was passed in 1975. The local planning and zoning processes, which are so critical to the mining industry, have been significantly improved with implementation of SMARA. Recognition of the importance of the mining industry is now being developed by the State Mining and Geology Board and the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG).

En este sentido, la Geotecnia es una herramienta que define las condiciones de los esfuerzos in situ, predice el comportamiento alrededor de excavaciones subterráneas e interactúa con las labores próximas, así como también la distribución de esfuerzos. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la aplicación de esta herramienta a una mina subterránea de Oro localizada en el Perú, donde se tiene bloques de mineral económicos, así como señala su accesibilidad con leyes encima del Cut-Off. De forma que se recupera el mineral económico a través de las rutas críticas de carguío, en función de la viabilidad de autosostenimiento.

"Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions. The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Due to the complexity and sensitivity of surrounding environments, instrumentation and monitoring (I&M) is critical for many urban deep excavations. The objects to be monitored include shoring bulkheads, retained embankments, adjacent buildings and roads as well as underground utilities. However, there are also plenty of constraints on the implementation of I&M such as: congested site space, difficult access to instruments, coordination among multiple contractors, and installation permits for private or public properties. Because of these constraints, sometimes the implementation of the initially planned I&M is delayed, its scope is reduced, and/or the continuity of monitoring is interrupted. For these reasons, it is important to implement the I&M with robust and redundant capabilities while providing minimal interference to the project construction and schedule. This paper describes state-of-the-art I&M technologies including automatic motorized total station (AMTS) with camera and automatic leveling device, reflectorless AMTS and IoT- based wireless sensors based on a case study of an on-going deep excavation project. INTRODUCTION In urban environments, deep excavations requiring the construction of temporary shoring bulkheads are becoming increasingly common, with the associated need to provide protection of the surrounding built environment during construction. Protection of the surrounding environment requires planning, engineering, construction, monitoring, and excessive shoring movement mitigation. The I&M is a vital component of the deep shoring implementation. In public projects, geotechnical I&M is often placed within the general contractor’s scope, whereas the majority of deep excavations are privately undertaken. For those private developments, sometimes the developer contracts the geotechnical I&M directly with the project geotechnical engineer or by a geotechnical I&M specialist hired by the project geotechnical engineer. In either the public project or private development case, the effective deployment of the I&M system relies heavily on coordination and collaboration with the project contractor.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is producing diamonds from two orebodies, the A154 South and A154 North kimberlite pipes, discovered beneath the waters of Lac de Gras. Innovative dike technology with appropriate water collection and treatment systems allowed Diavik to start open pit mining of the ore bodies in 2002. To allow planning, engineering, and implementation of sufficient water handling infrastructure, reasonably accurate estimates of groundwater inflow quality and quantity over the life of mine are required. Prior to mining, a numerical model using the continuum approach was developed for regional and site wide water management. After approximately two years of mining, groundwater inflows to the pit were found to exceed those predicted by the base case hydrogeologic model. The most likely explanation was flow through Dewey?s Fault zone. As this fault was not explicitly accounted for in the model, a detailed hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to evaluate its geometry and hydraulic properties. A multi-disciplined approach was used and involved core logging, fluid logging, geophysical logging, packer testing, a pumping test, and water quality sample collection. The results of the field investigation were used to update the conceptual and numerical models and to develop a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model to address small scale problems such as flow into future underground drifts. The updated numerical hydrogeologic models predict that up to 70 per cent of the groundwater inflow to the A154 N/S open pit is through the relatively narrow fractured rock zone associated with Dewey?s Fault. Consistent with the continuum model, the DFN model predicts that inflow to a drift excavated in Dewey?s Fault will be approximately 10 times the inflow to a drift excavated in competent rock. The DFN model provides a better understanding of the distribution of these inflows on a local scale over the length of the drift.

This paper shares the experience of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) Field Surveillance Branch over the past few years in building relationships with Aboriginal communities. Our goal is to provide and encourage best practices that may benefit you and your organization and result in strong, mutually beneficial relationships with a focus on Aboriginal communities. Historical information provides insight that aids in establishing effective working relationships with Aboriginal communities. An important component is appreciation of the perspective of these communities, which is achieved through awareness training. The use of local Aboriginal resource people as part of the training is recommended. A plan that is supported by management and staff is essential and lays the foundation for successful relationships. However, the plan must be flexible enough to change as circumstances warrant. The concept of having local people in communities address local issues is essential. This ?grass roots? approach, combined with the goal of exceeding a community?s expectations with respect to addressing issues, will go a long way to establish trust and credibility. Measuring the effectiveness of this work is the final building block to complete the picture.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, DC arc furnace, smelting, silicon The technical feasibility of silicon smelting in a DC arc furnace was investigated. A graphite-lined furnace was operated at power levels of 150 to 160 kW, and 40 to 60 V. The average feed rate during the silicon production period was about 30 kg/h. The recipe consisted of pre-mixed batches of 28% petroleum coke and 72% lumpy silica. The target furnace operating temperature was set at 1600°C and then raised to 1700°C. In total, about 1.6 tons of premixed feed materials was processed over 16 feeding?tapping operations. The feed was manually charged into the furnace in sub-batches of 10 to 40 kg at a time. The total batch mass was set at 90 kg during the initial part of the testwork, and increased to about 120 kg for the rest of the campaign.

Kriel Colliery has experienced some sub-standard blast results on the overburden. Blast results are considered poor when the fragmentation is too big, back break into the new highwall, capping is experienced and/or excess overburden material is thrown into the void. Poor blasting leads to lower productivity, equipment breakdowns, and poor drilling and blasting results on the adjacent blast, contamination of coal or loss of coal. A simulation was developed in Microsoft Excel to model blasting results while changing various parameters. From the simulation results, it could be seen that a change of blast design could be beneficial. As an example, smaller drilling patterns were simulated (10 m x10 m to 8 m x8 m, and 8 m x8 m to 7 m x7 m in Pit 5 and Pit 6 respectively) in combination with changes in explosives (P700 emulsion vs. ANFO) and drill bit diameter (311 mm vs. 251 mm). The results show that each of the options has a specific scenario that will be most beneficial to the mine. These results are quite specific and subject to variable inputs. The purpose of the example is to demonstrate how the simulation can be used as a tool to asses blast design variations.

Requirements to produce a higher bulk concentrate grade have necessitated extensive use of on-stream analyser data and computer programming to obtain the targets set for Frood Stobie Mill as required by overall milling considerations.A brief history of milling process changes associated with the changes from a low grade (3% Ni) bulk concentrate in the sixties to a high (6 to 8.5%). Nil bulk concentrate currently will be presented.The heart of the presentation will be the computer control schemes for ""self optimisation"" of the distinct flotation sections in the plant within certain restraints to achieve targets set by the mill metallurgist.
