Most crude oils contain asphaltic substances that may be naturally or artificially precipitated. In the Greeley field, California, this asphaltic bitumen is precipitated during the flow of the oil from the reservoir to the stock tank The mechanism of such precipitation is not well understood. This paper presents the progress that has been made by using the electron microscope as a new tool and by observing the effects of the streaming potential on the formation of bitumen particles. Crude oils at atmospheric pressure viewed in the electron microscope in very thin films under a vacuum showed no asphaltic particles. A technique of preparing slides of thin films by dilution of the oil with benzene and washing in petroleum ether was used at first, and these observations showed that the solvents caused the formation of the particles, varying from 0.01 to 0.2 micron in diameter. The electrical effects of fluids flowing through porous solid were studied, with emphasis on the formation of colloidal particles by the streaming potential. The streaming potential of crude oil flowing through sand was measured and was shown to be responsible for the formation of bitumen particles. These results bring out a new phenomenon, which may occur when crude oil flows through the porous oil reservoir. mechanisms. THE determination of the self-diffusion coefficient of magnesium has been made possible recently by discovery1-1 of a radioactive isotope, Mg28 having a half-life of 21.3 hr,1 and subject to manufacture in useful quantity. In the present research this material was condensed from the vapor phase upon a surface of high purity magnesium. The progress of diffusion of the tracer atoms into polycrystalline magnesium was followed by machining layers and measuring the change in the intensity of radiation as a function of the distance of each layer from the surface. The self-diffusion coefficient was found to be 2.1 X 10-8 sq cm per sec at 627°C, 3.6 X 10-9 sq cm per sec at 551°C, and 4.4 X 10-10sq cm per sec at 468°C; the activation energy is about 32,000 cal per mol. Experimental Procedure Since there was no other published measurement of a diffusion velocity in any magnesium-base material, is was necessary to employ a number of new experimental techniques. The short half-life of Mg28 made it necessary to complete the entire experimental procedure within three or four days. This meant that the work had to be done where a cyclotron was readily accessible and that all operations, prior to the diffusion heat treatment, had to be so designed as to minimize their time requirements. Unusual problems were imposed also by the chemical reactivity of magnesium, its high vapor pressure, and the fact that no satisfactory method for elec-trodepositing magnesium on magnesium is presently available. Finally, the machining and handling of the easily air-borne radioactive-magnesium chips involved certain health hazards, resulting in the need for further experimental restrictions. Preparation of Mg28 The Mg28 was produced in the Carnegie Institute of Technology syncrocyclotron by the neutron spallation of chlorine.5 his involved bombarding a 2 gram crystal of high purity NaCl with a beam of 350 mev protons for a period of 2 hr, after which the crystal was dissolved in warm water and the Mg28 was concentrated and purified by chemical means (see Appendix). About 50 microcuries of Mg28 thus were obtained in the form of magnesium oxinate (8 hydroxyquin-olatc?), which was ignited in air to produce MgO. This in turn was reduced to magnesium metal vapor, by the method of Russell, Taylor, and Cooper," in the vacuum apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. Here the essential part is a tantalum ribbon, slightly dished to receive the MgO. The ribbon, pre- viously outgassed at high temperature, is heated to about 1700°C by passing an electric current through it, whereupon tantalum oxide is formed, magnesium vapor is released almost instantaneously, and condensed partly upon the diffusion sample. Diffusion-Sample Preparation: Hot-extruded magnesium rod, 21/32 in. round was used in making the diffusion specimens. The magnesium analyzed as follows: 0.004 pct Al, 0.027 pct Fe, 0.040 pct Mn, 0.0004 pct Cu, 0.0002 pct Ni, and less than 0.01 pct Ca, 0.0004 pct Pb, 0.0011 pct Si, 0.001 pct Sn, and 0.001 pct Zn. A brief study of the crystal texture of this material revealed a sharp fiber texture with the (001) plane roughly parallel to the extrusion axis. Cylindrical samples 1/2 in. long by 5/8 in. were machined from this rod, the end faces dressed on 3/0 emery, and lightly etched with 20 pct HC1 in water. These samples then were annealed for at least twice the intended time of diffusion, at the intended diffusion temperature, in order to stabilize the grain structure at about 1 mm average diameter. The annealing treatments were conducted in argon in the same apparatus and in the same manner as the subsequent diffusion treatments, which will be described presently. Thus, a strain-free plane surface was produced, but there remained a layer of MgO which had largely to be removed before the layer of Mg28 was deposited. Most of this layer was taken off by two light passes over 3/0 emery paper. The balance of the oxide and a thin layer of metal were then removed by etching 5 to 10 min in 4 pct nital (4 pct HNO3 and 96 pct ethyl alcohol) made with absolute alcohol. There followed immediately three quick rinses in: 1-49 1/2 pct methanol, 49 1/2 pct acetone, and 1 pct formic acid, 2-50 pct methanol and 50 pct acetone, and 3-pure benzene. This procedure is essentially that of Sturkey.7 The resulting surface, which was of almost elec-tropolished brightness, remained plane and was free of cold work. Direct, in situ observation of metallic alloys during solidification reveals that in some systems crystal multiplication occurs by means of a dendrite remelt-ing process, without the necessity of independent nu-cleation events. The solidification is observed on optically clean surfaces of supercooled molten alloys. In one system (Sn-3 wt pct Bi) , a fine-grained equi-axed structure is produced by the complete disintegration, via remelting, of transient initial dendrites. In contrast, several other metallic systems show little or no evidence of remelting activity. The behavior of these metallic systems is consistent with that expected on the basis of published observations of dendrite remelting in transparent organic alloy systems. It is concluded that dendrite remelting is an important crystal multiplication process in some metallic alloys, but is velatively unimportant in some other alloys. The detachment of dendrite branches from the primary stem by a remelting process has been observed by Jackson, Hunt, Uhlmann, and seward1 during the solidification of some transparent organic alloy systems. The branches released by this remelting process can drift free of the primary stem and serve as seeds for the formation of numerous independent crystals. This proliferation of new crystals does not require repeated independent nucleation events, but only modification of the initial solidification structure. The mechanism of dendrite remelting, as described by Jackson et a1.1 and by Tiller and O''Hara,2 is dependent on the transport of both heat and solute and is, therefore, expected to operate only in alloys, and not in pure substances. It was found in the transparent organic alloy systems that remelting occurred primarily in the constricted regions near the base of dendrite branches, where the branches had grown through the solute-rich liquid layer surrounding the primary dendrite stem. It was suggested that impure solid had formed in these constricted regions at a relatively low temperature and had later become unstable as further solidification of purer material raised the temperature. Jackson et al. proposed that the equiaxed zone of metal alloy castings originates from a similar remelting process, and they demonstrated the operation of this mechanism in "ingots" poured from saturated salt solutions. Although these substances were especially selected to show solidification behavior similar to that of metals,3 the remelting mechanism has, until now, been subject to the objection that its operation has not been directly observed in a metallic system. Considering the fact that thermal properties such as diffusivity may differ by as much as two or three orders of magnitude between metals and organic compounds, this objection was considered to be possibly serious. A method has now been developed by which it is possible to make direct optical observations of metals during solidification. This method has revealed transient solidification processes which would not be detected by metallographic examination of totally solidified specimens. In particular, a grain-refinement process in a metallic alloy has been observed to be a direct consequence of the total disintegration of an initial dendritic structure. The influence of an initial, transient solidification structure on the final solidification structure is demonstrated here for the first time in a metallic system. During the year 1928 ten new producing areas have been discovered and several extensions in oil and gas fields have been found in southwestern Texas. This year, however, will reveal itself as one of small profits in spite of considerable increase in production for the area as a whole over the previous years. At the beginning of 1928 the fields in this area (Fig. 1) were producing a daily average of 7500 bbl. from 730 wells, whereas at the close of the year the daily average had increased to approximately 14,000 bbl. from 827 wells. Production for the year was 3,453,938 bbl. The total oil produced in Southwest Texas since its discovery has been 16,955,-388 barrels. (Table 1.)

This paper reports the results of the use of salt in some research work carried on during the past 3 years at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau of Mines, which is quartered in the University of Utah, whose Metallurgical Research Department cooperates with the Bureau. Only the work involving the use of salt is described. The authors wish equal credit given to J. F. Cullen, C. L. Larson, C. Y. Pfoutz, C. E. Sims, H. C. Neeld, R. W. Johnson, F. G. Moses, N. C. Christensen, and G. H. Wigton, who have all in some way contributed toward the success of this work, while connected with the station in one way or another. Lead Metallurgy Popularly Supposed to be Without Problems In lead metallurgy it is difficult at first to find metallurgical problems, as the prevailing conception has been that lead is so easily concentrated in its various ores and so easily reduced to its metallic form that the only progress possible is that involved in cheapening methods of mining and of reduction. Most of the problems usually considered are of minor nature and do not involve radical metallurgical changes. During the three years of work of the Salt Lake Station, the following classification of problems in the metallurgy of lead has been made: Oxidized Ores. 1. Ores containing only lead. 2. Ores containing lead and silver or gold. 3. Ores containing lead and zinc, with or without silver. Sulphide Ores. 1. Ores of pyrite carrying some lead. 2. Ores of complex zinc-lead-iron sulphides. 3. Complex sulphides containing precious metals.

Gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevada by J. W. Marshall on Jan. 2, 1848. The town of Grass Valley soon sprang up and contained several stores in 1849; but the population of the town has always reflected the fluctuations in quartz mining. Gold-bearing quartz was found on Gold Hill in September 1850, and in the next two years most of the quartz-bearing veins in the vicinity were located. At first, the quartz was crushed in mortars with spring poles; the IIuff Co. took out $20,000 in this manner during the winter and spring of 1851. The first mill was put up in January, 1851. In 1866, there were in Grass Valley 248 stamps, crushing 71,420 tons of ore with an average yield of $30 to $35; in Nevada City, there were 142 stamps, crushing 14,200 tons, with an average value of $25. Rut in 1918, only two properties in this region, the Empire and the Korth Star, were producing Since then, there has been a revival of mining in the district and the following properties are being opened up: The Golden Center. Idaho-Maryland Mines Co., while the Su1tana is kept unmatered and work is going on in a half dozen mall propertics Mining Claims At the first meeting of miners in Grass Valley, Jan. 13. 1851, a plot :30 by 40 ft. was allowed for a claim, the boundaries in all cases being perpendicular. In 1852, the quartz miners in Nevada County deeided that "each prospector shall hereafter be entitled to 100 ft. on a quartz ledge or vein and the discoverer shall be allowed 100 ft. additional. Fach claim shall include all the dips, angles, and variations of the vcin." This rule was in force until replaced by the Federal mining laws of 1872; these allowed quartz claims to be 1500 ft along the vein, with all the dips, spurs, and angles, and to have a width of 600 ft. The classical explanation for formation of the fine equiaxed "chill zone " in ingot solidification is that local supercooling near the chill wall causes copious nucleation in this region. This work indicates, however, that convection is an essential element in formation of the chill zone. In the absence of convection, no chill zone forms even though rate of. heat extraction is extremely vapid. Alloy studied was Al-l.5 pct Cu alloy solidified against a copper chill wall. When solidification was initiated at the chill wall in absence of. cor-vection, surface grain size was large (>I cm diam). When it was initiated in the presence of convection, it was fine (<0.05 cm diam). It is concluded that some form of "crystal multiplication" plays an important role in formation of the chill zone. INGOT macrostructures are generally classed as containing one or more of the three zones: "chill zone", "columnar zone", and central "equiaxed zone". These three zones are sketched in Fig. 1; their origin has been discussed in some detail.&apos;-&apos; The classical explanation for formation of the chill zone is that supercooling occurs in the region of liquid metal adjacent the mold wall, and copious nu-cleation then takes place in this region forming numerous small crystals. The columnar region then results by growth of favorably oriented grains (den-drites) which crowd out their less favorably oriented neighbors."5 The mechanism of the columnar-equiaxed transition has been the subject of considerable interest. The generally accepted mechanism, until recently, was that constitutional supercooling developed in front of the growing columnar grains with eventual nucleation of new, equiaxed, grains ahead of the growing solid front.&apos; Recently, it became evident this explanation was not completely satisfactory and it is now evident that "crystal multiplication" plays an important role. This crystal multiplication occurs by separation of dendrite arms from growing dendrites,8?"&apos; and has been shown to be strongly influenced by convection.6, 10-13 Reduced convection results, for a given alloy, in longer columnar zone, larger columnar grains, and larger equiaxed grains.7, 12

Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. By independent control of temperature and water vapor pressure, it is shown that charge depends primarily upon relative humidity, not on temperature or water pressure alone. All the effects of temperature changes other than modification of humidity are apparently small. However, humidity control can be achieved through manipulation of the more tractable variable, temperature. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. Some of their effects have been described in general by Fraas1,2 and by Ralston.3 The influence of temperature and humidity may be considered a problem in industrial separations because humidity, especially, is not normally controlled, hence leads to unpredicted quality control problems. The problem is significant whether the separation is based on conductivity differences or on contact electrification. There is no doubt that water adsorbs from humid atmospheres onto mineral surfaces resulting in conductivity changes.&apos;-8 An empirical relationship between conductivity and humidity is1.4-6,8 where a and b are constants peculiar to the substrate, and s and h are the conductivity and relative humidity respectively. Some authors have taken advantage of differences in a and b among minerals to make or propose electrodynamic separations in which h is the key control variable. Fraasl,2 reported that the charge developed on quartz and feldspar through contact with aluminum is sensitive to humidity, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The susceptibility of titanium to stress orientation of hydride precipitates was investigated. It was determined that, when hydride precipitation occurred in titanium under an applied tensile stress of 30,000 psi, the hydrides precipitated on the titanium habit plane oriented most nearly perpendicular to the stress axis. Stress orientation of the hydride platelets occurred because the precipitation of the lower density hydride phase perpendicular to the stress axis caused expansion of the matrix in a direction that tended to relieve the applied stress. The Ti-H system has received considerable study in recent years, mainly because of concern over the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium. The amount of hydrogen present in commercial titanium is now quite low and should have no appreciable effect on its mechanical properties; however, many titanium applications require ex- posure to hydrogenous atmospheres under conditions in which hydrogen pickup is likely. In such cases continued exposures may cause the hydrogen content to increase to the extent that titanium hydride does precipitate as a second phase. The hydride phase has been shown 1,2 to have an adverse effect on the mechanical properties, particularly the impact properties, causing reductions in strength and ductility. BACKGROUND The behavior of titanium is often quite similar to that of zirconium and zirconium-base alloys, and the technology developed on one metal can often be applied to the other. Marshall and Louthan3,4 have shown that Zircaloy is susceptible to stress orientation* of zirconium hydride platelets, and that the platelet orientation has a pronounced effect on the mechanical properties of Zircaloy. They showed that when zirconium hydride precipitated in Zircaloy under an applied stress the hydride platelets tended to be aligned parallel to a compressive stress and perpendicular to a tensile stress. CORROSION tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply f oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case f salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion f the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend .2 He tested the corrosion f mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream f air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number f jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor."

Asbestos fiber, before it can be used commercially, is separated from the rock in which it is naturally found. Johns-Manville Corp. is currently constructing a 12-story fiber mill, of which the first half is completed and in operation. The mill will be the largest in the world, producing about 30 pct of the world&apos;s fiber. It was engineered and constructed by a cooperative effort of the engineers of the Canadian Johns-Manville Fibre Div. and the general plant engineering dept. Detailed design work on all phases of the job was done by Surveyer, Ninniger & Chenevert of Montreal. A series of crushing, screening, air aspirating and air separating processes will separate the fiber from 10 tons of rock per min. But to process this amount of ore about 90 tons of air per min will be handled in the aspirating and dust-collecting systems. To express this in more common units, 2.5 million cfm of air will be required. All this air will pass through a bag-type continuous automatic filter and will be expelled to atmosphere in summer or returned to the mill for heating during the winter months.

Some form of longwall mining is generally used in Continental Europe; also in Great Britain where the coal is weak and friable, or the coal bed provides material for pack walls and filling, or where the bottom is soft and squeezes up easily, or the roof is pliable, or the bed is thin and brushing provides building material, or the thick multiple seams are mined in layers, such as the 24-ft.seam at Weymss, Scotland, or the 10-yd. pitching bed near Coventry, England. Pillar methods have been retained in British fields where the coal beds are from 5 to 9 ft. (1.5 to 2.7 m.) thick, and free from thick partings or binders or without draw slate, which would provide waste rock for pack walls, or where the roof is hard and requires shooting to bring down, and also the bottom or floor is comparatively hard. The room-and-pillar system, by which probably 95 per cent. of the coal of the United States is produced, is now found in only a few mines in Wales, where it is known as the pillar and (single) stall method. The American room-and-pillar system is not equivalent to the bord-and-pillar or stoop-and-room system. The essential difference between the bord-and-pillar and the average American room-and-pillar system is probably due to natural conditions. The majority of the coal mines in the United States have a depth of less than 700 ft. (213 m.). The bulk of the coal mined in Europe comes from a depth of more than 1200 ft., while the deepest mines in Great Britain, Belgium, and France reach 3500 to 4000 ft. In deep workings wide spans are impracticable, even with the use of abundant timber; accordingly, as the mines in the United States become deeper the rooms will become narrower and the pillars thicker, and the bulk of the coal will be extracted on the retreat. It is generally conceded, without reference to the cost of production, that the larger the pillars left on the first mining, the more thoroughly can the coal be extracted. In Europe complete extraction is generally compelled either by the lessors or by the governments; whereas in this country it has been more largely a question of competitive cost of production, or the support of the surface in the flat farming districts of the

Impingement attack, as one of the types of corrosion suffered by condenser tubes, has been given a prominent place in corrosion literature of recent years. It has been reproduced and studied in carefully controlled laboratory tests. Much has been learned of its mechanism, and of the effects of variables such as temperature, amount of air, size of bubble and water velocity. Incidentally the technical public has been given comparisons between the behavior of some few metals under various conditions of impingement attack. The tests recorded here were undertaken in an effort to find at least some sort of qualitative answer to questions which arose occasionally as to the relative resistance of various alloys to impingement attack, and which could not be answered by reference to the literature. The final decision to start work on the problem was influenced in large measure by the nature of the water available in this particular place. The mill of the Bridgeport Brass Co. is located on the Pequonnock River at Bridgeport, Conn., within two miles of its mouth. The water is much like many other estuarine sources which are used in condensers, and which cause particularly severe corrosion. It seemed a most suitable water to use in such tests. As the work progressed an important seasonal variation was noted. The purpose of this note is to record this seasonal effect. The results of individual tests are given only incidentally. Impingement Tests Early in 1929 the apparatus was built. The samples were disks of 1-in. dia., cut from sheet metal. They were eleaned with fine emery cloth and set in holders, as shown in Fig. 1. A stream of water pumped directly from the river impinged on the surface of the sample. Compressed air was injected into the water stream through an air duct. Water pressure was maintained at about 35 Ib. per sq. in. and air was controlled by a needle valve. Velocity of

Kansas retained, for the eighth consecutive year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The total crude-oil production during 1934, as reported by purchasers to the State Corporation Commission, was 45,538,564 bbl. on 97 per cent tank table calculations of the purchasers, or 46,946,973 bbl. as carried on 100 per cent measurement in U.S. Government reports. The corresponding figures for 1933 are 40,008,940 and 41,236,021, respectively. The increase of production over 1933 was due to the rising demand for oil from Kansas, caused principally by three factors: the continued regulation of the producing branch of the industry by Federal and State authorities, which had the effect of reducing illegal production that has been so destructively competitive with Kansas crude and refined products; the normal decline of production in other areas; and, last and best, general increased demand of the public for petroleum products. The price level remained unchanged for the first time in oil history for so long a period. Kansas 36" gravity crude remained at $1 per barrel from September, 1933, and throughout 1934. Price stability and the confidence in the regulation of production to meet the consumer demand, which is increasing, brought greatly renewed interest in Kansas fields. Drilling activity has been largely in the western part of the state where expiration of leases, on large blocks of acreage, assembled before the depression, is forcing either action or loss of the lease investment carried for a long period. The drilling of these many blocks of acreage, previously assembled on geologic information, has caused the opening of more fields than during any previous year of Kansas oil history and is proceeding faster than anticipated a year ago. Interest grows within a successful enterprise, and the momentum caused by the successes of 1934 will continue in 1935 unless unusual conditions arise and end the apparently good opportunity for financial return. Geological exploration methods used in new field discoveries are shown in the tabulation of new discoveries (Table 3).

One of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo.; their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies were made in the mines of the Coeur d&apos; Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to coöperate. A proper consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. Manufacture of Wrought Iron The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identified with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval compared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man&apos;s needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the forerunner in principle of today&apos;s scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. Cort&apos;s invention of the puddling process in 1784 is a landmark in wrought-iron manufacture. Introduction. ONE of the features of oil-field work that puzzles operator, chemist and geologist alike, is variation in the gravity of the petroleum produced, on neighboring leases or even from adjoining wells. Few fields in the United States yield oil that is of uniform gravity throughout; in some, fields the different grades are produced from different sands, in a few from different formations, and in many from different areas in the same sand. In a few cases, perhaps, a common assumption-that the heavier oil is derived from the lighter through the escape of the more volatile constituents-is valid, but many cases can not be explained in this way. Although in the California fields the specific gravity of the oil generally decreases with depth, there are numerous exceptions to this rule; and, as in many other regions the light oil is found nearest the surface, it is evident that evaporation underground is generally an unimportant factor. It is generally recognized that the great differences between petroleum from widely separated fields are due largely to differences in age and degree of metamorphism and to variation in the composition of the original organic matter; but in the writer&apos;s opinion some of these broader differences, as well as most of the minor variations in the character of the oil from any one field, are clue to the local action of natural reagents such as sulphur or oxygen. This is particularly likely to be true if the oil has migrated from one formation to another, as in the California fields; and in some areas it appears that variation in sulphur content may even afford a rough index of the extent or distance of the migration. It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to the chemical action of sulphur and oxygen on petroleum, to show that the gravity of the oil from any one field is intimately related to its sulphur content, and to discuss the possi-

The war effort has furnished the necessary impetus for better magnesium foundry practice. Four or five years ago, there were but a few formulas in general use for core-sand mixtures for magnesium castings. Certain sands, binders, and inhibitors were specified and the proportions of these materials in each mixture were maintained between very narrow limits. As more and more war industries entered the field, much research was carried out and methods and practices were improved. Magnesium founding is still in a state of flux; therefore it is not uncommon to find one foundry spraying inhibitors on its cores, and another foundry using sand mixtures with incorporated protective agents. The basic core or dry-sand mold mixture for magnesium in use today is compounded with sand, core oil or resin binder, cereal, and moisture. Core oil or resin binder are added for baked strength while the cereal binder and moisture are for green strength. The normal mixtures (based on the weight of the sand) contain from o.5 to 1.5 per cent of both cereal binder and core oil, and the moisture content variesbetween 1.5 and 5 per cent. The ratio of core oil to cereal binder varies from 60:40 to 40:60, while the correct amount of moisture depends upon the method of coremaking. Protective Agents In all magnesium practice, protective agents are used in conjunction with the core and molding sands to prevent oxidation of the metal. The use of these inhibitors is not novel, but publications covering this field are not entirely adequate. Beck1 says: Magnesium alloys decompose water to form magnesium oxide, hydrogen being liberated in the process (Mg + H2O ? H2 ?+ MgO). This reaction results in the blackening of the skin and the appearance of areas of porosity on the casting surface, the cavities of which are filled with a grey oxide powder (these are termed &apos;burns&apos;). Although sand cores for magnesium castings are thoroughly dried during the baking cycle, burning will take place on the casting5 unless the metal is protected properly. This type of burning is more difficult to define than the "water-magnesium" reaction cited by Beckl A possible explanation may lie in the following equation: 2Mg + O2—> 2MgO Here, the source of the oxygen is not water, but the air in the mold cavity, together with the chemically combined oxygen in the core-binding media. Generally, two methods are used to prevent this reaction from taking place.

In the year 1820 a commission, assisted by Sr. C. Fernando de Ainada, was appointed by Sr. Jose Ramon Mila de la Roca to report on the condition of the mining region of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, where in recent years the mines of Batopilas have reached an important development under American management. The object of the inquiry was to provide Sr. De la Roca with facts to support a project for reopening mines that two centuries before had produced a large amount of silver. Although this plan failed, many facts of interest in the history of the mines were presented.. Much of the report dealt with questions that had only local application or were restricted to the conditions of labor and equipment in the opening of the nineteenth century. The historical part is presented in the following paragraphs: Abstract of the Report. Notwithstanding the difficulty of forming a just estimate of the system of mines in this mineral group in the valley of Senor Sail Jose del Parral without an examination of each of them, that which we shall say in a general way will suffice to convey an idea of their value and of the urgent necessity of reopening them. If this is undertaken, we believe the results will be of the highest consequence to the Republic, as well as to this immediate locality. The group of the Villa del Parral covers the mineral territory in which the village of that name was located. Its moantains contain large metallic veins, from which, as from the trunk of a tree, depend others much more slender, locally called ,fibras, crossing and interlacing each other in many directions.
