The main purpose of this work was to study the effect of gold on the activity coefficient of oxygen in the liquid Fe-Au alloy and to determine how copper and silver change the activity coefficient of oxygen. A preliminary investigation has been made of equilibrium in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in some of the liquid gold alloys. The experimental method, which has been described in detail elsewhere,' consisted of bubbling accurately known H-A-water vapor mixtures through the Fe-Au alloys contained in alumina crucibles within a vertical closed furnace. When equilibrium was reached, the samples were quenched by rapidly lowering the crucible under an atmosphere of argon to a water cooled brass fixture at the bottom of the furnace tube. The melts were found to freeze from the top in less than 4 sec. The heats were carefully prepared for oxygen analysis. The oxygen content was determined by vacuum fusion analysis.' Only high purity electrolytic materials were used in this investigation. The activity and free energy of oxygen in the liquid iron alloys were studied by means of the reaction; The data for the 80 Fe-Au alloys, obtained as a function of temperature, are summarized in Table I and presented in Fig. 1, where log is plotted against . Hydrogen gas at atmospheric pressure is shown to cause substantial embrittlement in a martettsitic high-stretzgth steel. Subcritical crack growth is observed at very lom stresses and with high growth rates. It is suggested that an adsorbed layer of hydrogen atoms at the crack-tip surface provides the damaging hydrogen. Oxygen in small quantity, as little as O.7 pct by volume, is shown to eliminate subcritical crack growth in gas environments caused by hydrogen or water vapor. However, dissolved oxygen in water has little or no influence upon crack-growth rates. Oxygen-stopped cracks may be restarted by water, or by hydvogen or water vapor if oxygen is removed from the environment. These observations are interpreted in terms of preferential adsorption of oxygen at the crack tip and the formation of an oxide barrier. RECENT investigations1-3 have demonstrated that environmental factors are frequently responsible for delayed failure in martensitic high-strength steels. The environment causes crack initiation from preexisting cracklike flaws at unexpectedly low stresses, often far below the uniaxial yield strength. The crack then propagates at a rate controlled by the environment and the crack-tip stress-field intensity; during this period crack propagation will cease if either the stress or the aggressive environment is removed, and this may be considered a definition of subcritical crack growth. Fracture occurs when the crack has grown to a critical length, such that the fracture toughness of the steel is exceeded. Several liquids are known to cause delayed failure, but water and water vapor are the most severely damaging of the environments investigated to date.'-3 It has been suggested that hydrogen produced during corrosion reactions may be the actual embrittling agent2 The severe embrittlement caused by water vapor inevitably raises the question as to whether other gas environments are damaging. Previous work4'5 has demonstrated that high-pressure hydrogen (2250 psi or greater) is an effective embrittling medium, as measured by such criteria as reduction in area, notch tensile strength, and time to failure. Moreover, the embrittlement was eliminated by the addition of small quantities of air or oxygen to the high-pressure hydrogen, but it was not influenced by additions of nitrogen or argon.4 In the present study attention is focused upon gas environments at atmospheric pressure, in particular hydrogen and oxygen. The influence of these constituents upon the initiation and growth of a crack from a pre-existing cracklike flaw in a high-strength steel was determined directly by the electric-potential method of monitoring crack growth. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The H-11 steel was supplied by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory as 3 by 12 by 0.065 in. sheet specimens with 1-in. transverse center slots. The slot tips were finished by Elox machining to a radius of 0.001 in. or less. The yield strength was 230,000 psi; chemical composition and heat-treatment schedule are given in Table I. The experimental apparatus, precracking procedure, and incremental loading sequence have been described previously.3 In the only significant change, precracking was sometimes carried out by a hydrogen embrittlement and baking technique. All experiments were conducted at room temperature; the hydrogen gas environment was purified by a commercial palladium purifier. Crack initiation and propagation were followed by the electric-potential method,'-3 using a calibration that has been recently dicussed. Stress-field intensities at the crack tip were computed by the conventional Irwin frmula; the plasticity correction was negligible and therefore not included. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A striking brittleness associated with molecular hydrogen at atmospheric pressure is demonstrated by the data in Table I1 and Fig. 1, which indicate that subcritical cracks in hydrogen initiate at lower stress-field intensities and propagate more rapidly than in fully humid argon. Ki and Kf are the crack-tip stress-field intensities at initiation and termination of subcritical crack growth, respectively. Termination, of course, corresponds to fracture. THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the northeasterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. IF the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indica-tions that this new process may make commercially possible the manu-facture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to mag-netite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe2O3) to magnetite (Fe3O4) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red tempera-ture in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900° F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. I will endeavor to describe the methods of silver-mining and smelting employed by the natives in Mongolia. Modern methods have been applied there, but with little success; and, since they are familiar to most members of the Institute, I will simply mention that the failure was due to the high price of coke used in smelting the ore in modern furnaces, and to the unsuitable mill-machinery employed for concentrating the galena, which is finely distributed in the ore. The Jehol silver-mines are situated about 45 miles NE. of Jehol, the capital of Mongolia. They embrace two mines, 5 miles apart,—the Ku Shan Tze mine and the Yen Tung Shan mine. They were first worked by natives 50 years ago, about the time when mining was so flourishing in other parts of the world,—for instance, in California and Australia. The upper part of the vein is galena mixed with iron-stone, and is 2 to 4 ft. thick. At lower levels the vein is composed of silver-lead ore running between quartz-porphyry walls. Limestone, talc and black shale, colored by graphite, are found in other parts of the mine. Crystalline limestone is found 1 mile NE. of Ku Shan Tze. Granite is encountered in the Yen Tung Shan mine. Mining.—The native method of working the mines is most primitive. The same method may have been employed a thousand years ago. A small inclined shaft, 4 ft. by 4 ft., is sunk in the vein-stuff where the appearances are most favorable. Another shaft is sunk 20 or 30 yds. away, for ventilation. The shaft follows the vein in a zigzag fashion in whatever direction the vein appears to be richest. Timber is used only in soft ground. Where the ground is hard, the roof is cut into an arch-form. In some places, instead of using ladders, steps are cut in the rock, just wide enough to hold one foot. The deepest native workings are 400 ft. below the

The Canadian National Railway system is completing construction of the first major tunnel in North America to use the coarse-aggregate (+ ½ -in.) shotcrete technique of primary support and lining. The tunnel was driven 29 X 20 ft in cross section, 10,760 ft long, passing under an industrial and residential area of Vancouver. With the exception of 1400 ft in soil (mainly impervious tills), the tunnel passes through a very young series of flat-lying sedimentary beds, to a large extent so incompletely consolidated as to fall apart on exposure. For a conventional steel-support system, it was estimated 8 WF, 28-lb steel should be used at 5-ft centers. Cost of erection including lagging would amount to $120 per linear ft of tunnel at 304 per lb. With 8-in. concrete cover on the steel, lining would cost $280 per linear ft at $82 per cu yd. Thus, minimum cost of support and lining would have amounted to $400 per linear ft. It is now estimated that at least 90% of the rock tunnel would have required support and 100 % required lining. Specified shotcrete support was 6 in. in the arch and 4 in. in the walls. Cost of this work was roughly $100 per linear ft. In addition, another $10-$12 per ft has been incurred in drainage and waterproofing wet areas and in measures to correct experimental and operational errors, thus finalizing the support as a lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel was driven three shifts five days weekly, no blasting being allowed by city ordinance between midnight and 7.00 a.m. A six-drill jumbo was used to drill a 10-ft round, 110 holes blasted three times daily. A 2-in. layer of shotcrete was applied to the newly blasted arch commencing within 45 min of blasting. This was done from a flying deck that extended over the muck pile from the jumbo (Fig. 2). Also during the mucking cycle, the preceding incomplete arch support was brought up to 6-in. specification. The walls were sprayed 4 in. thick during the drilling cycle (Fig. 3). The shotcrete machines and aggregate bins were mounted on the jumbo.

While in the past, local governments have focused on feeding their large populations, the transfer of modern technology to the agricultural sector has produced record crop years in many of these countries. As a result, agricultural objectives have become more manageable, prompting governments to shift priorities to the accelerated development of their industrial sectors. The basis of any sustained industrialization program, the governments concede, is the development of a vibrant minerals sector.

The lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnecessary drilling.' While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a technique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. Economic equilibrium in petroleum refining is a dual concept. It embraces both the over-all balance between total storage and total demand for major products and the internal balance between the demands and inventories of the various products. The latter is the more complex of the two for it is concerned with proportionating the supplies of the several products stemming from the joint source to the demands for the individual products which are subject to wide variations. All the products are essentially nondurable goods, and they are used both by producers and consumers but in varying proportions. Motor fuel is very largely a consumer's good, while residual fuel oil is almost entirely a producer's good, the other products falling between these extremes. The peculiar-

Fundamental data on the rate of diffusion of boron in austenite and solubility of boron in the a and y phases of iron and steel have been obtained from deboronizing experiments and provide partial explanations for some of the phenomena observed in boron steels. The rate of diffusion of boron is about the same as carbon in austenite. The solubility of boron in austenite at normal heat-treating temperatures is less than 0.001 pct. A partial tentative Fe-B phase diagram in the important low boron concentration ranges and an equation representing the diffusion of boron in austenite are presented. A LTHOUGH a search of the literature revealed ALTHOUGHthat boron diffusion had not been studied quantitatively and systematically prior to 1948, a few qualitative observations which were made by following the diffusion of boron into iron packed in ferro-boron1-3 suggest that boron obeys normal diffusion laws and that the rate of diffusion increases with increasing temperature. The claim of Cornelius and Bollenrath1 that boron does not appear to influence the rate of carbon diffusion has recently been substantiated by Wells, Batz, and Mehl.4 Calculations based on data from the paper by Campbell and Fayv indicated that the diffusion coefficient (D) for boron in iron at 900°C is approximately 3x10 sq cm per sec; a value of 2x10-7 sq cm per sec at 1038°C has been reported by Digges et al in connection with decarburizing experiments on a commercial boron steel containing 0.43 pct C. During the period 1948 to 1950 several diffusivity constant (D) values for the diffusion of boron in the y phase of iron and steel and a number of solubility values for boron in both a and y phases were reported. It was concluded tentatively as a result of Metals Research Laboratory studies that D values for boron in y and a phases are about the same as for carbon in the comparable phasesa and that carbon up to 0.4 pct did not affect the rate of diffusion of boron in y iron above 1000°C within the limits of experimental error. Whether saturation of the y or a phases with carbon would significantly affect rates of diffusion of boron through them was then and still remains in doubt. The best estimate of Q (activation energy) was reported to be about 25,000 cal, somewhat lower than that for carbon in y iron. The solubility of boron in y iron at 1000°C was thought to be higher than 0.004 pct B but not as high as a more recent analysis of available data shows it to be. The solubility of boron in a iron at 700°C was reported to be 0.0004 pct B, but it would not have surprised the authors if the true solubility value is actually lower than this. Breaks in diffusion curves which were not understood when first obtained prior to 1950 have now been recognized as indicating solubility limits, and these are included in the present paper. Experimental Procedure Two methods were employed in an effort to determine diffusion coefficients (D) for boron in austenite. Early experiments involved the use of welded couples prepared in accordance with the procedure of Wells and Mehl,' but when the results of these experiments proved to be unsatisfactory for calculating D values, studies were continued by means of deboronizing experiments. In both cases, boron analyses following the diffusion anneal were carried out spectrographically and all D values were computed using the Grube solution of Fick's law. The precision of the spectrographic method used proved to be about equal to that reported by Corliss and Scribner" —average deviation from the mean about 5 pct of the amount present when the boron content is 0.003 pct. Concentration-penetration curves obtained from spectrographic analyses of welded couples generally indicated that practically no boron was transported across the weld interface during the diffusion anneal. Pulsating contpresslon experiments have been carried out on coppev single crystals in order to test the adequacy of mechanisms which have been suggested for stage I cvack grouth when tension-compression loading is the mode of- applying stress. Although dejorrrzation continues slowly for many millions 01 cycles under Pulsating compression stresses both within slip bands formed in the first cycle and by the creation of new bands, the morphology of these bands is not typical of fatigue slip bands in general and neither initiation of cracks nor propagation of artificially induced cracks was observed. It is therefore concluded that 1) initiation and growth of cvacks in fatigue is a consequence of repeatedly reviersed, microplastic deformation rather than intermittent, unidirectional deforma-tion, 2) gvowth of- cracks in polycrystalline specimens FAILURE of a plain specimen subjected to cyclic tension-compression stresses is known to take place by two stages of cracking.1,2 The first stage is characterized by propagation along slip planes roughly at 45 deg to the stress axis, in the outermost layers of the specimen, and at a rate of the order of angstroms per cycle. The average macro orientation of a stage I crack is normally at right angles to the stress axis,3 however, except in a few cases, e.g., single crystals in suitable orientation, when both the micro and macro directions of propagation are at 45 deg to the axis. After a stage I crack has penetrated to such a depth that the stress on the remaining section of metal is significantly increased, stage II crack propagation succeeds stage I, at right angles to the stress axis both micro and macroscopically. Direct evidence of the processes occurring during a subjected to pulsating compression stresses is caused by the setting-up of local tensile stresses due to interactions between grains, and 3) both unslipping mechanisms and operation of the "plastic blunting process " within a single slip band are adequate descriptions 01- stage I growth, being fundamentally similar. The slip mode of a material, however, is considered to control whether unslipping or the plastic blunting process takes place. Thus materials of planar slip mode fauor unslipping while those hacing a wavy mode, and capable of cross slip, can fail in stage I by the plastic blunting process. Similarly, and perhaps more importantly, reversed torsion and tension-compression modes of applying stress may be expected to cause the unslipping mechanism and the plastic blunting process, respectively. single stress cycle4,5 shows that stage II crack propagation takes place by a repetitive plastic rounding and closing of the crack tip. This mechanism has come to be called the "plastic blunting process".6 On the other hand, the extreme smallness of the phenomena occurring in stage I growth prevents elucidation of its mechanism by direct observation. Many suggestions have been proposed for this mechanism,'"-" most of them involving some kind of random or systematic unslipping process. It is possible, however, that the mechanism of stage I growth is essentially the same as that of stage 11, but occurring on a much smaller scale.6 In this situation, it has been observed that cracks propagate along slip bands comprising dislocation cell structures and bounded on either side by regions of different dislocation density and distribution." Since there is evidence that such bands are softer than their matrix, * it may be expected that the plastic blunting process occurs within a single slip band during stage I growth, rather than on two gross bands as in stage 11, when the acting stress is greater.= The blunting of the crack tip allowed by coordinated

In February, 1918, the conclusion was published by Lewis and Beal "that wells of equal output on the average will produce equal amounts of oil in the future, regardless of the ages of the wells." This conclusion was based upon the study of data collected principally in Oklahoma and was not known at that time to be true for other oil fields. An abundance of statistical proof was later collected by the senior author of the present paper, which showed that the conclusion was undoubtedly well founded and that it applied to other fields as well. Accordingly, it was later restated2 as the "law of equal expectations" as follows: "If two wells under similar conditions produce equal amounts during any given year, the amounts they will produce thereafter, on the average, will be approximately equal, regardless of their relative ages." Although only scanty data from the California oil fields were available at the time this publication was prepared, sufficient information was analyzed upon which to base the insert on Fig. 80, which showed beyond a doubt that the law held at least for a part of the Midway oil field in California. Recently the authors have collected more complete data in California, and it is the purpose of this paper to explain the method used in demonstrating the truth of the law and, in addition, to give several methods by which curves constructed in accordance with this law can be used in a practical way with ease and accuracy. Oxidation experiments were conducted above 600°C to investigate the oxidation products formed on the surface of MoSi2. Results are presented which indicate that minor iron impurities play a key role in the oxidation behavior of MoSi2 above 600 °C. Based on considerations of the crystal chemistry of the oxidation products, MoSi2 with rhenium and iron additions was found to be resistant to oxidation in the pesting temperature range. AS early as 1914, Honigschmidtl observed that some silicides of molybdenum exhibited high resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. This fact did not arouse much interest until 1950, when Kieffer and cerwenka2 examined this property in more detail. They found that Mo-Si alloys with approximately 70 pct Mo (by weight) could be heated to 1600°C in an oxidizing atmosphere without any significant damage. The surface was found to be protected by the formation of an extremely thin silica glass layer which had no tendency to spa11 during subsequent thermal cycling. In 1955, Fitzer3 discovered that even solid bodies made of MoSi2 completely oxidized within a relatively short time when exposed to the air in the temperature range from 300° to 600°C. To describe this phenomenon he proposed the name "molybdenum disilicide 'pest' ", clearly analogous to the previously observed "tin plague" ("tin pest") which, however, arises as the result of a phase transformation. Studies performed by Fitzer and, in particular, one published recently by Berkowitz, Blackburn, and Fel-ten,' comprise the most extensive research to date on the pest phenomenon in MoSi2, as far as the fundamen- tal mechanism of the process is concerned. The first of these studies revealed the existence of a crystalline phase which appeared at the surface at 750°C and dissolved in the glassy silica layer at 1150°C. The logical assumption was that this phase was some reaction product of MOO3 and SiO2. The formation of a reaction product of this type seemed probable since it had been mentioned by Glemser and Lutz6 in a paper describing their studies of molybdenum oxides; however, this assumption was later disproved.8 It is our belief that information concerning the exact nature of this crystalline phase may be important for a better understanding of both pesting and the protection mechanism. Therefore, since the only available general description of the pest phenomenon was that of Fitzer, it was decided to reproduce his experiments. These experiments established that, in addition to the "pest" and "nonpest" temperature range, an intermediate region exists between 600" and approximately 650°C. This region is characterized by the appearance of a variable amount of yellow to orange colored crystals. The electron-beam microanalyzer was used to qualitatively determine their composition. Iron and molybdenum were found to be major constituents. This result can be explained based on the following facts: 1) iron, according to literature data,* is the most common impurity in molybdenum powder, and its content can be as high as 0.25 pct; 2) technical silicon powder usually contains iron; 3) steel ball mills are often used for the crushing and grinding of MoSi2. In order to clarify the exact role of iron, it was deliberately added to a stoichiometric mixture of molybdenum and silicon. The observed results corroborated the previous experiment, proving that iron (probably as some silicide phase) concentrates along the grain boundaries. INTRODUCTION RITTINGER'S law of the energy expended in crushing is, as roughly stated by Professor Richards,1 that the work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter; or, as I have more fully expressed it: "The work done in crushing is proportional to the surface exposed by the operation; or, better expressed for this purpose, the work done on a given mass of rock is proportional to the reciprocal of the diameter of the final product-assuming that all the mass has been reduced to one exact size, which is only theoretically possible.?2 Kick's law is stated by H. Stadler as follows:3 "The energy required for producing analogous changes of configuration of geometrically similar bodies of equal -technological state varies as the volumes or weights, of these bodies." In other words, the energy expended is porportional to the volume reduction, instead of the diameter reduction. That these two laws would give widely different results may be shown by a simple imaginary case. A ton of 16-in. cubes is broken to 1 -in. cubes at the first operation, and these are broken to 1/16 -in, cubes at a second operation. Since the first operation produces only one-sixteenth as much new surface as the second, the ratio of energy expended in the two operations would be by Rittinger's law as 1 to 16. By Kick's law, since the volume-reduction ratio is the same in both cases, the ratio of energy would be 1 to 1. Recent studies of inelastic behavior and acoustic emission in geologic materials further validate the concept that such materials may be considered to consist of an elastic media containing an array of pores and cracks. In the present paper this concept is investigated further by experiments in which the mechanical behavior of a number of geologic materials were studied in detail at low stress levels using ultrasonic pulse methods. Experiments were carried out on cylindrical test specimens of Indiana Limestone, Tennessee Sand- stone and Barre Granite under relatively low confining pressures (0-5000 psi). Analysis of data from these experiments indicated that there existed a low-level critical stress at which there appeared to be a transition in the mechanical behavior of the material. Under triaxial stress, results indicated that the differential critical stress was relatively independent of confining pressure, i.e., the mechanism responsible for the transition in mechanical behavior was governed by a maximum shear stress criteria.

For some years we have been carrying on a rather comprehensive investigation of the occurrence of oxygen in liquid open-hearth steel. This investigation was interrupted by the war emergency and is therefore incomplete, with many questions still answered only partially, if at all; yet it seemed worth while to present a report of progress on this difficult field of research, if for no other reason than to promote discussion and further investigation of this important problem. The significance of such studies depends in large measure upon the accuracy of measurements of oxygen content in liquid steel while it is still in the furnace or as it flows into the ladle, or thence into the mold and there is, as we shall show, good reason for believing that the main source of uncertainty is in the sampling, not in the analytical method as such. The difficulty arises from the fact that any method of sampling is of itself apt to alter the amount of oxygen in solution in the liquid steel, because this oxygen is in a readily reactive condition. On the one hand, being usually present at a concentration appreciably in excess of that corresponding to equilibrium with the carbon then present, it may decrease rapidly in percentage by reaction with carbon and evolution of CO, especially if the liquid metal is in any way shaken or brought in contact with a cooler solid surface. On the other hand, it may increase rapidly by ab- sorption of oxygen from a slag, a furnace atmosphere, or from air. These circumstances, which are inherent in the problem, as well as our conclusion that, despite the considerable amount of careful work already done, there is still no method of sampling liquid steel acceptable as an unquestioned standard, ed us to undertake systematic comparisons of oxygen content of large numbers of samples taken: (I) by a single method at different positions and levels in the bath; (2) at the same place by different sampling methods; and (3) from bath, tapping stream and pouring stream. The different sampling methods yield somewhat different values and there is as yet no way to tell with certainty which is the most accurate. But the general reproducibility and consistency of the results give us some confidence in certain inferences we draw from them: namely, that the "spoon" method of sampling, properly carried out, gives somewhat more consistent results than the "bomb" method, as it has usually been practiced; that, in the bomb method, an aluminum cap is preferable to a steel cap; that the oxygen content of liquid steel in a finished heat is substantially the same all over the bath at the same level, and tends to decrease at lower levels further from the slag interface; also that it tends to decrease, and to decrease erratically, from furnace bath to tapping stream entering the ladle. Accordingly it seemed desirable to report these observations in detail as a first step, so that the reader may judge their significance as a contribution towards solution of the main problem, which is to find a means of pre-2

§ 1 Introduction.—This paper gives the results of our micro-graphic determinations of the position of Ae3 in a series of 14 hypo-eutectoid steels of varying carbon content, one of them very rich in phosphorus, and of SEe for one hyper-eutectoid steel. We have proceeded chiefly by noting the temperature at which the reabsorption of the pro-eutectoid element is found to be complete after a 30-min. holding, but in part also by noting the temperature at which its precipitation begins. Observations on these same steels by Messrs. Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon, of the United States Bureau of Standards, are given in a paper1 issued simultaneously with this, while in a third paper2 one of us compares these data with those of earlier observers. These three papers are treated as one whole by numbering their sections, tables, and illustrations continuously, and by setting the folding plates of micrographs at the end of the last paper. The Composition of the Steels Experimented On is given in Table I. § 2. DUring the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, mining, and preparation of barite in most of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract, including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors.2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.³ The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but the product is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. Studies have been made of the method of propagation of yield in iron single crystals in the range of 205' to 295OK by microscopic and X-ray techniques. 'The results show yielding in two stages, of which the second corresponds closely to the Lüders extension in polycrystalline iron. IRREGULAR macroscopic markings On the polished surface of a polycrystalline mild steel test piece during the lower yield extension were first observed by Liiders.' The lower yield stress was not very constant. An investigation was carried out to determine the variables affecting the coiling temperature of strip in the 56-in. hot strip mill. After statistical treatment, equations have been derived to determine the temperature drop between mill and coiler for both full spray (top and bottom) and top spray only practices. The individual influences of each variable in the temperature drop were derived for both practices. Limitations of the present practices were shown and adjustments in cooling for increased rolling speeds were suggested. A method of estimating the required number of sprays, their spacing, pressure, etc., to achieve a desired temperature drop is developed. MAXIMUM finishing temperature of a hot strip mill is mainly determined by the rolling speed, gage, and the temperature of the bar entering the mill. This finishing temperature may be limited by the maximum admissible coiling temperature in cases when either the cooling facilities on the runout table are not adequate or, more generally, when the cooling capacity of the runout table and the production capacity of the continuous mill are out of balance. Some time ago, the balance between these two factors was not considered detrimental to production. Recently, a new drafting schedule was introduced which increased the production rate, the entry temperature, and hence the finishing temperature. Thus, the restriction of the maximum specified coiling temperature became an important factor for many of the thicker gages. An investigation of the factors determining the coiling temperature may be, therefore, of considerable importance. A brief description of the available equipment will be a useful illustration of the techniques and methods used for this investigation. The 56 in. continuous hot strip mill is composed of six 4-high stands each containing two 221/2-in. diam work rolls and two 45-in. diam back-up rolls. Either of the last two stands can be used as the finishing stand. Which stand is used is dependent on the total percentage of reduction to be taken over the whole train, i.e., on the entry thickness and the final gage. The characteristics of these last two stands are given in Table I. Table I.
