In western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquen, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. Character of Solid Bitumens The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquen are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis : Constituents Per Cent Hydrogen.................... 6.8 Carbon...................... 82.4 Nitrogen..................... 1.6 Oxygen...................... 2.7 Sulphur...................... 2.2 Ash.......................... 4.3 100. 0 In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbon. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-con-choidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquen. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Es-peranza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

A priest at Shenandoah, Pa., one day persuaded the president of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. to slush breaker waste and culm into old mine workings in order to save his church from being destroyed by surface subsidence. The year was 1864, the project was successful, and history recorded the first use of hydraulic backfilling. Shortly afterward, the method was applied to several eastern coal mines for area fill to control subsidence. In 1884, hydraulic backfilling was used to control a mine fire in the Schuylkill region of Pennsylvania. The idea was taken to Europe by German engineers and developed successfully at the Myslovitz colliery in Upper Silesia in 1901. From there it was applied to several mines throughout Europe.

The results of field measurements using an air injection technique to investigate the integrity of three pillars in the Mclntyre Mines Ltd. 114 seam at Crande Cache, Alberta, are reported. These pillars are shown to be stable and an estimate is made of the strength of these pillars. Using these results, together with Hustrulid's pillar strength formulae, a general pillar strength equation for the 114 seam is developed. This equation takes into account the probability of failure that may be deemed tolerable within the design requirements. The variation of the minimum pillar dimensions with depth below surface for uniform pillar layouts is then examined for a range of tolerable failure probabilities. A general equation of the form B = 2.60 +B Z relates the minimum pillar design width, B metres, with the overburden depth, Z metres, where B is a parameter related to the tolerable failure probability. This equation only applies for 3.05m high pillars with 6.lm wide entries. Finally, the question of what failure probability is tolerable within the design of mine pillars is discussed. This will depend on the support role required of that pillar and the anticipated period over which the pillar must perform that role. Five categories of coal mine pillars are defined, each with a somewhat different role to perform. Tentative design criteria in the form of "tolerable probabilities of failure" are suggested for four of these five categories of pillar. The fifth category of pillar has no reliable support function to perform and support must be obtained by other means.

This paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, ranging sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration. Reflection Seismograms The earth, being a nonhomogeneous medium, is composed of a series of layers, which differ from each other in their physical properties, particularly in their elastic coefficients. These variations in elasticity are the cause of refraction and reflection of a seismic wave. THE integrated intensity X-ray method of meas-uring retained austenite concentrations in hardened plain carbon or low alloy steels as proposed by Averbach and Cohen1,2 has the advantages of being a highly sensitive and precise quantitative method. The various phases of this method have been studied and several modifications have been developed which aid not only in reducing the time required per determination, but which also increase the possible accuracy of the method. A fundamental step in the original calculation procedure is to plot V.A(?) curves for austenite and martensite and to obtain VM/VA ratios from these curves.' IN a previous communication,l the quaternary system Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 was described in detail and it was shown how certain alloys used for high-temperature applications could be construed as consisting of Ni,Cr suitably modified by the addition of aluminum and titanium in relatively small amounts. With the correct aging treatment, the ordered face-centered-cubic Berthollide phase, y'-Ni,Al, could be precipitated from the face-centered-cubic primary y-solid solution. By increasing the proportion of titanium with respect to aluminum, it was also possible to precipitate the very brittle hexagonal-close-packed Daltonide phase, ?-Ni,Ti. From the nature of the system it seems reasonable to expect the y and y'-phases to take appreciable amounts of cobalt and iron into solid solution. In the case of the present investigation it was decided to confine the work to iron additions only. This element may be introduced in two quite distinct ways: 1) as a simple replacement for nickel; and 2) as a replacement for chromium, titanium, and aluminum. The second method of iron addition forms the basis of the present investigation, which is, in effect, a study of the pseudo-quaternary system Ni,Cr-NiPe-Ni,Ti-NLAl. For purposes of reference, Figs. 1, 2, and 3 have been included and illustrate the quaternary system Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 described in the previous paper along with sections through N&Cr-Ni,Ti-Ni,Al at 750" and 1000 "C respectively. The effect of rolling reduction on the textures of Cu-A1 alloys has been investigated both by pole figure and by modulus methods. In alloys which exhibit complete copper or brass types of rolling texture, the rolling reduction has little effect on the texture except to increase the degree of preferred orientation. In alloys which exhibit a transition texture, however, increased rolling reduction increases the amount of brass-type texture at the expense of the copper-type texture. The present experimental results show that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the SFE and the rolling texture of fcc metals. Additional data taken from the literature for fcc metals also support this conclusion. On the other hand, the present and previous experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with the suggestion that the texture transition occurs at a critical value for the separation distance between two partial dislocations—a consequence of the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis for texture. formation. This critical separation occurs when the parameter .r/ub is 3.75 x 10'3. From this, a value for the SFE of 39 ergs per sq cm may be deduced for a Cu-2.85 at. pct A1 alloy. ThE correlation between the rolling texture of fcc metals and the stacking fault energy, SFE, was one of the first attempts to relate atomistic properties with the type of rolling texture.' This correlation gives a qualitative explanation for the experimental observation that the addition of alloying elements, which generally lower the SFE, changes the copper-type texture to a brass-type texture. The simplicity of this correlation had led to its general acceptance and even its quantitative use.' However, it is only a correlation and is largely based on descriptive features of pole figures, and on the poorly known SFE values in dilute alloys. Quantitative verification of this phenomenologi-cal correlation is, in fact, completely lacking. One purpose of the present study is to test this correlation. Another atomistic description for the formation of rolling texture is the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis of texture formation.3 In this hypothesis, the factor controlling the type of rolling texture depends on whether or not the separation distance between two partial dislocations exceeds a critical value. Materials having a separation of less than the critical value are supposed to exhibit a copper-type texture while those with a separation above the critical value are supposed to have a brass-type texture. At the critical value, it is expected that the material should show equal amounts of copper- arid brass-type orientations in their textures, i.e., a 50 pct transition texture. The SFE appears in this hypothesis as only one of several factors which determine the separation distance between partial dislocations. It is possible to test the validity of these two concepts by studying the rolling texture as a function of rolling reduction. Since the SFE per se is an intrinsic property of the metal, it should not, by definition, be influenced by local irregularities, such as variable stress conditions. Thus, no change in texture-type is expected to occur with changes in rolling reduction. On the other hand, according to the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis, any factor that effectively influences the separation distance of partial dislocations would be expected to change the rolling texture. Since the separation distance between partial dislocations is known to depend upon local stresses,4-6 it is anticipated that there would be an effect of the degree of reduction on the texture-type. Also, since applied stresses are more likely to increase, rather than to decrease, the separation between partials,4'5 the overall effect would be to increase the amount of material in the brass-type orientations as rolling reduction is increased. Furthermore, this reduction dependence would be most prominent in alloys exhibiting the transition texture since the distance between partials in those alloys is thought to be close to the critical value. Experimental data in the literature is insufficient to distinguish between these two alternatives. Haessner studied the effect of rolling reduction on textures in a series of Ni-Co alloys by means of the X-ray intensity-ratio technique,' and found that while one texture parameter indicated no reduction dependence the other indicated a slight dependence of the rolling texture on reduction in the range of 96 to 99 pct. As has been noticed previously, the intensity-ratio technique is a convenient but controversial method7 because there is no a priori reason to suggest which intensity-ratio would describe the texture most meaningfully. A more quantitative method of describing textures is found in terms of the orientation dependence of Young's modulus. Here, the type of modulus aniso-tropy associated with the copper-type texture is sufficiently different from that observed for the brass-type texture to allow the two types to be easily distinguishable and a quantitative measure of the amount of each can be deduced from the numerical results. This ability to provide quantitative data is particularly valuable when the two textures occur simultaneously in one alloy as is the case for the transition textures. In this paper the modulus method, supplemented by pole figure data, is used to look for an effect of roll: ing reduction the texture. Also by combining the texture measurements with recent determinations of the SFE in Cu-A1 alloys'0'" it should be possible to test for a relationship between the SFE and textures.

The rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, therefore the first trial was made at Ducnweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. Studies of roof and floor movement are of interest to those actively engaged in mining. This is especially true in the case of an entirely new area where there is no precedent for guidance. The potash deposit being mined is in the southeast corner of New Mexico, about 20 miles east of Carlsbad. The deposit was formed by the land-locked, shallow, Permian Sea that extended through parts of western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southeastern Colorado, and eastern New Mexico. The saline deposits vary from 500 to 4000 ft. thick. Neither of the companies operating in this area has delimited its commercial ore bodies. As all production so far has been from Federal and State leases, the Department of the Interior and the State of New Mexico have a direct interest in the development and extraction of these ore horizons. The ore is composed of an intimate mechanical mixture of sylvite (potassium chloride) and halite (sodium chloride). It lies generally in a horizontal bed varying from 5 to 12 ft, in thickness, and has a cover of approximately 1000 ft., consisting of about 500 ft. of salt beds and 500 ft. of sediments. The immediate mine roof for several feet is principally salt with some potash and clayey material. The next 500 ft. above, from the standpoint of structure, may be considered rock salt with a few inter-bedded potash members. The upper 500 ft. is of sedimentary (Permian and Triassic) origin and contains several water-bearing formations with flows varying from 10 to 500 gal. per minute. This water intensifies the interest in convergence problems as the ore and surrounding formations are water soluble. Potash salt (sylvite) and rock salt (halite) are plastic minerals. Plasticity is defined as a "property of solids by virtue of which they hold their shape permanently under the action of small shearing stresses but are readily deformed, worked, or molded under larger stresse."1

THE situation in 1872, from the standpoint of the prospector, the locator, the possessory claimant, and the patentee of mineral land under Federal statutes, cannot be understood without a knowledge of the situation prior to 1866, and between 1866 and 1872. The Situation before 1866 The western public domain acquired by the United States through treaties, as the result of conquest or purchase, was invaded after Marshall's re-discovery of gold in California, by an overwhelming multitude of prospectors and miners from all parts of the world. The mineral lands of the whole Pacific slope were practically unsurveyed. Congress, disgusted with the experiment of leasing mineral lands; which it had tried for 40 years, and abandoned in 1847, enacted no laws for the management of these public mineral lands, and the pioneers made their own laws governing mining titles. These local regulations applied at first to gulch-mining in the auriferous river-beds only; and they constituted a simple and practical system, adapted to the needs and means of primitive communities-significantly called "camps." They had the means of measuring distances, but not angles; they knew no -property except personal property in the form of pickaxes, pans, supplies, camp-equipage, horses or mules, and mining rights. The earliest codes which they developed expressed what might be called the law of the lariat. With the lariat they measured the distance assigned to each miner along the gold-bearing gulch-a double portion to the discoverer, and a single portion to his successors, in the order of their coming. With the lariat, they hung, after such due process of law as was available, the rascal who stole a horse, or a bag of gold-dust, or a; mining claim, or killed another man without giving him fair notice and a chance to defend himself. Graham Macfarlane, Louisville, Ky. (communication to the Secretary*):—In the paper by S. Whinery under the above caption mention is made of the occurrence of Clinton iron-ore in Kentucky and Tennessee. I believe that this is really a ferruginous limestone in what the Tennessee Geological Survey calls the Fernvale formation. In Davidson and Sumner counties, Tennessee, this occurs at about the horizon stated by Mr. Whinery. The maximum thickness of the deposit is from 10 to 12 ft., but it averages between 6 and 8 ft., lying practically horizontal. The Red River Furnace Co., under my direction, opened a mine in the Fernvale " red rock" near Goodlettsville, Tenn., several years ago. When it was first found we assumed it to be Clinton ore, but the absence of the characteristic Clinton fossiliferous structure and other evidence satisfied us that it is really limestone saturated with iron oxide. I think the very low ratio of SiO2 and Al2o3 to iron content as compared with the usual ratio in the Clinton ore is also evidence in favor of its being the Fernvale. The Tennessee Geological Survey states that at outcrops where this ore has been leached it carries about 44 per cent. of iron; under cover, from 20 to 25 per cent. of iron and from 3 to 6 per cent. of silica, the remainder being chiefly calcium carbonate. Its phosphorus content is irregular and generally rather high for a foundry-iron mixture. Since it is more than self-fluxing, we have at times operated with a mixture of brown hematite and red ore with no limestone.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 million yr (m.y.) ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. A total of more than 200 km30f silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.0 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the south-central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later (-1 2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited silica, cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma, or connate water, or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury and other elements has not been identified.

INTRODUCTION Request to Mine Beneath Bridge The Jakes Run Bridge is a reinforced Portland concrete arch filled bridge located on WV Route 7 near Pentress, WV. The bridge has a span of 22.9 m (meters) and a height of 4 m above normal pool elevation to the underside of the center of the arch (See Fig 1). We have studied the effect of adsorbed sulfur on the surface self-diffusion of copper using eight diflerent surface orientations and the grain boundary grooving method. The eight orientations studied were the four lying near the low-index surfaces—(loo), (Ill), and two directions in the (110)-plus four higher-index surfaces. Surface-diffusion measurements were made over a range of HZS concentrations (in Hz) from 3 to 1500 ppm between 830°and 1050°C. The results can be divided into two groups—Group 1 contains the two (110) surfaces while Group 2 contains the remaining six surfaces. In Group 1, increasing the temperature increases the effect of Hz S on DS for the Hz S range 5700 ppvn. Qs and Do increase with increasing H2S concentration in this Hz S range. Beyond this range, increasing the temperature decreases this effect on D,; also Q, and Do decrease. In Group 2, increasing the telnperature decreases the effect of H2 S on D, for the H2S range studied, and Qs and Do decrease with increasing Hz S concentration. In any study of surface phenomena, there invariably arises the question of the possible presence of and effect of adsorbed impurities. Such questions are well-founded since the presence of adsorbed atoms can sometimes produce marked changes in the kinetics of surface-energy-driven processes. In the last few years, values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, have been determined on a variety of metals by studying the decay of scratches or the growth of grain boundary grooves.L~3-L0~L3 Yet there has been relatively little work done in which the concentration of an adsorbed impurity was systematically varied and the effects observed. Work of this sort would provide some basis in fact for the assertions often made about the ro1.e of adsorbed impurities in the differences between the results of different workers in different atmospheres and on different metals. It also is relevant to those cases in which surface monolayers produce profound effects in commercially important processes. The most marked example of such effects is the ability of nickel or palladium to increase the sintering rate of tungsten by many orders of magnitude.' The aim of this work was to study the effect of sulfur partial pressures on the surface self-diffusion of copper. It was felt that this in conjunction with a study of the degree of adsorption and type of active sites involvedL8 would provide a wide range of data for one system and hopefully lead to some insight into the mechanism by which sulfur adsorption influences copper diffusion. The main reasons for choosing the Cu-S system were, first, faceting was reported not to accompany the adsorption of sulfur. This is required if our experimental technique is to work. Second, Oudar has determined a high temperature adsorption isotherm for this system, an event which puts the Cu-S system almost in a class by itself.I4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially, we considered studying the effect of an adsorbed impurity on surface self-diffusion of copper using isolated (or single) scratch smoothing as the technique and oxygen as the impurity. Copper was chosen as the material because the effects of orientation and anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, of copper in a dry hydrogen atmosphere had been studied extensively by Gjostein' and by Shewmon and ~hoi.~,~ The isolated scratch technique was chosen because both the effects of surface orientation and anisotropy of D, in a given surface could be easily studied with this method.~ Oxygen was tried as the impurity because Robertson and Shewmon""~ had studied its adsorption on copper at 1000°C over the range of oxygen partial pressures of 10"22 to 10-l3 atm. After several preliminary runs, it became evident that neither the scratch technique nor the impurity oxygen would be satisfactory for this work. Scratching deforms an annealed surface so that the region near the scratches recrystallizes, thereby disrupting the scratch profiles. One can avoid this by deforming the specimen sufficiently before scratching to give complete recrystallization on subsequent heating.4 However, as a result of Gjostein's success in scratching and annealing undeformed gold single crystals without local recrystallization,13 we attempted something similar with copper single crystals using a 0.7-mil diamond phonograph needle mounted in a Tukon hardness tester. All specimens recrystallized upon being annealed. Also, some copper specimens were sent to Gjostein to be scratched using his technique. The results were the same. As a result, the scratch technique was dropped in favor of the grooving of symmetric grain boundaries. Preliminary work using oxygen showed that faceting began to occur before oxygen adsorption had any measurable effect on D, at 938°C (at Pbo/P, = 0.12). Since heavy faceting would interfere with the measurement, we decided to use a sulfur-containing atmosphere (H2S/H2). Work by Oudar and Benard' and Robertson" showed that sulfur absorbed on copper and that faceting was not observed.

GEOCHEMICAL prospecting extends the age-old method of searching out lodes with a gold pan and rationalizes the prospector's hunch that certain plants are associated with ore. It uses sensitive but cheap and rapid analytical methods to find the diagnostic chemical variations related to hidden mineral deposits. Exploration geologists can gain tremendous assistance from this new tool, although its optimum use is not simple. To bring out the geochemical pattern that reveals the presence of a hidden ore deposit with a minimum number of samples requires a combination of shrewdness, chemical knowledge, and exploration geology. The use of sensitive analytical methods for prospecting had its start in the 1930's in northern Europe, where Scandinavian and Russian geologists had some success in these early efforts. Very little geochemical prospecting was carried on in the United States at this time, and no sustained interest was manifest until the close of World War 11, when geochemical investigations were started by the Mineral Deposits Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey. The purpose of these investigations was to apply geochemical principles and techniques to surface exploration for mineral deposits. Both the research on analytical methods and the routine trace analyses for field investigations were at first conducted by a single group, but it later became apparent that the trace analyses could be done by men of less experience than that required for successful research on methods. For the past several years there have been two groups of chemists, and although their functions overlap, three of the chemists are chiefly concerned with research, while four to six other men make the trace analyses for field projects. The chemical investigations, as well as the field projects of the Geochemical Exploration Section, concern only those phases of the subject that are appropriate to a government organization; every effort is made to help private industry, but not to compete with it, in finding orebodies. The chief aim of the Section, therefore, is to develop new analytical techniques and publish the results promptly, to carry out field investigations of the fundamental principles of geochemical dispersion, and to field test promising- techniques under controlled conditions. Some routine geochemical exploration work is carried on in connection with DMEA loans, and in district studies where the project chief wishes geochemical information on certain areas for his report. It should be emphasized, however, that geologists of the Geochemical Exploration Section are primarily concerned with fundamental principles underlying the distribution, migration, and concentration of elements in the earth's crust. To facilitate the use of geochemical methods the USGS has published much information on its methods of analysis and has provided opportunities from time to time for qualified professional personnel to study these methods, to work in the USGS laboratory, or to attend demonstrations of the analytical techniques at the Denver Federal Center. Typical of the research carried on are the problems now being investigated: 1) Development of rapid and sensitive analytical methods suitable to the determination of traces of metals and other minor elements in various materials, such as rock, soils, plants, and water. At the present time attention is being concentrated on U, Bi, Cr, and Hg, and satisfactory rapid trace analytical methods are virtually perfected for U and Bi. Good methods are also available for: Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, As, Sb, W, Mo, Ag, Nb, Ge, V, Ti, Fe, Mn, S, and P. 2) The relation of geochemical anomalies in plant materials to the geochemical distribution of elements in soils surrounding the plant. 3) A study of the dispersion halos in transported sedimentary cover such as glacial drift and alluvium over known orebodies. 4) A study of the behavior of ore metals in the weathering cycle. 5) A study of the behavior of the ore metals during magmatic differentiation. This requires a study of the distribution of minor metals in fresh igneous rocks and their component minerals in a well established differentiation series and in adjacent country rock. 6) A study of the dispersion of metals in primary halos in the wall rock surrounding orebodies. 7) Regional and local studies of the metal content of surface and groundwater in mineralized and barren areas. Many field projects of the Mineral Deposits Branch also require the services of USGS chemists during their investigation of the geochemical environment of ore deposits. From the work that has been done certain general principles have emerged. Concentrations of an element that are above the general or background value of barren material are called positive geochemical anomalies or simply an anomaly, whereas values less than background are called negative anomalies. The anomalies most commonly investigated in geochemical prospecting are those formed at the earth's surface by agents of weathering, erosion, or surficial transportation, but more and more attention is being given to primary anomalies found
