INTRODUCTION Within the past few years Clark (1972), King (1970), and King, et al. (1973), have summarized porphyry molybdenum occurrences. Clark (1972) includes as porphyry or stockwork deposits some occurrences more recent exploration has shown to be of other genetic types. King (1970) and King, et al. ( 1973) provide broad general descriptions that unfortunately are restricted to the US. Nor does the King, et al. (1973) description have benefit of the Wallace (1974), Hall, et al. (1974), or Giles (1975) data on alteration, fluid inclusions, or isotope chemistry. The synthesis presented here up- dates these older summaries, eliminating all but the well established porphyry molybdenum deposits as well as enumerating the unifying characteristics displayed by these deposits within the Cordillera of North America. This type of deposit occurs in the South American Andes as well, but Andean deposits are not well documented so only North American Cordilleran deposits are considered. Stockwork, porphyry, and Climax type molybdenum deposits are synonymous geo- logical labels for the large molybdenite de- posits found in parts of the western Cordillera of North America (Khruschov, 1959). These labels describe and define the type of deposit discussed herein. The term porphyry is preferred for this chapter because it describes the common characteristics; it separates the molybdenum deposits from the porphyry copper deposits, which have many similarities but also important differences. This usage also eliminates blanket application of the word stockwork to breccia pipe deposits such as Boss Mountain in British Columbia. J. R. Woodcock has contributed much to this chapter; his influence, original data, and thoughtful comments qualify him as co-author. Porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by fine-grained molybdenite occurring alone or with quartz and/or pyrite in fractures and open spaces of stockworks and breccias. Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. is the largest lead-zinc mine in Japan and is composed of two mines, Tochibora Mine and Mozumi Mine, which have daily production rates of 5,200 metric tons and 1,800 metric tons of crude ore respectively. In the mines, there are many massive pyro-metasomatic deposits which have been derived from the replacement of limestone. The deposits are composed of skarn minerals which mainly contain hedenberite. The country rock is generally hard and fine-grained gneiss. These deposits have been mined by means of the sublevel stoping method, induced block caving method and sublevel caving method at Tochibora Mine and mainly by the cut and fill method at Mozumi Mine. Since the 19601s, the trackless mining system has been introduced successfully into both mines, and is still promoted to be applied over wider areas. The underground hauling system is simplified remark- ably and much improved by adopting trackless ramps to the existing vertical and horizontal underground framework. Moreover, through the combination of the trackless mining system with the mining methods stated above, a notable increase in efficiency has been achieved. This is due to the high performance of the introduced machinery, reductions in man power of miscellaneous jobs, and also has enabled a highly efficient performance through its mobility. In addition, as it becomes possible to realize a flexible development to meet the irregularly shaped deposits and also becomes much easier to recover the remaining pillars by secondary mining, the extraction rate of ore has been improved considerably. With the introduction of the trackless mining system, the development method has been changed, thus former hand-hold leg-drills are now mostly re- placed by jumbo-type drills. Repair shops for Load-Haul-Dump machines also have been provided with an established service system. Reinforcement and rearrangement of the ventilation system has been carried out.

The accuracy with which grade and tonnage of a mineral deposit may be calculated from diamond-drill assays is dependent upon: (1) the reliability of core and sludge samples and (2) the validity of methods used in grade and tonnage calculations. Limitations imposed by drilling and sampling preclude elaborate methods of computation. In adjusting core and sludge assays the importance assigned the core and sludge samples may be based on either the respective weights recovered or the respective volumes represented by each. Only when core and sludge recoveries arc poor do discrepancies between adjusted assays calculated by these two methods develop, in which case the "weight" method gives emphasis to the core sample and the "volume" method gives emphasis to the sludge sample. When the sludge suffers classification within the drill hole, the weight method gives more accurate results; when the sludge sample suffers no classification, the volume method gives more accurate results. Any drilling campaign offers a compromise between desired accuracy on the one hand and expediency, limited time, money. or facilities on the other. Since the determination of grade and tonnage is an approximation at best, a proper basis for their computation requires a knowledge of the limitations imposed by all phases of work upon which the calculations depend A rational basis for coordination of these phases of work requires determination of: (I) the degree of accuracy desired, as a function of the object of examination; (2) the degree of accuracy attainable, as a function of the limitations imposed in the drilling and sampling program; and (3) the validity of method to be used in calculating grade and tonnage from core and sludge assays. This paper presents results of a comparison made between two commonly used methods of adjusting core and sludge assays, the assumptions upon which these methods are based, and the interrelationship of the phases of work upon which these calculations are dependent. Object of Examination The Purpose of prospecting any mineral deposit is to secure sufficient samples from which Ore grade and tonnage may be calculated. Any mine examination, preliminary or formal, has a definite purpose, although its scope may be limited or broad. The type of examination to be conducted is dependent, therefore, 'pan the reason for instituting the investigation; its scope and thoroughness are directly related to economic considerations. It is highly desirable, therefore, that before starting a drilling campaign a complete understanding of the extent of examination and desired degree of accuracy be determined as a means of simplifying the drilling program and unifying the relative degree of

AFTER several years study, the Universal Atlas Cement Co. decided to rebuild its plant at Leeds, Alabama. The entire old plant, which was to operate during the new construction, was then to be scrapped with the exception of two kilns. The quarry was to be mechanized, new and larger kilns installed, with the most modern type of equipment all through the plant. Raw grinding operations at all of the Universal Atlas plants were dry. However, the dust hazard of this operation and the growing emphasis on occupational diseases made wet grinding attractive. Coal at Leeds is cheap, so that a slightly higher coal practice was unimportant. Power was cheap, so that waste-heat boilers were not desirable. Since new kilns were to be installed, these could be made long enough to make filters unnecessary. Wet raw grinding could be either the old practice of open-circuit compartment mills or closed-circuit grinding in accordance with metallurgical practice. The latter saved power and steel wear and saved initial investment. This had been demonstrated in cement plants. Also, the elimination of tramp oversize was a most important advantage. Ease of chemical control was another factor. Blending in the thickener, with elimination of slurry mixers had been found practicable. Therefore, if wet raw grinding were used at all, the advantages were clearly in favor of closed-circuit grinding. Detailed layouts of the most modern possible closed-circuit dry-grinding plant and of a closed-circuit wet-grinding plant were prepared, and careful estimates were made of initial investment and operating costs. Full consideration of all the factors involved resulted in a decision to install wet closed-circuit grinding. The capacity of the new kilns was established at 4000 bbl. per day. Two new kilns were installed, each with a capacity of 80 bbl. per hour. Since 625 lb. of raw material is required to make a barrel of finished cement, the capacity of the grinding plant for the new kilns had to average only 1250 tons per day. Sufficient additional grinding capacity had to be provided for the two remaining old kilns, or their possible replacement by a third new kiln. The grinding rate, therefore, was set at 90 tons per

The problem of stress corrosion has been discussed a great deal recently, but many factors have as yet not been clarified. There are many interpretations of the definition of the word, different corrosive media are used, and numerous methods of stressing are utilized. Some quarters believe that the inherent strength of the material under test is the determining factor of its resistance to stress corrosion, while others think that the natural corrosion resistance of the material is the determining factor. This paper is intended merely to set forth the limited experience we have had and to discuss some of the other stress-corrosion tests which have been made with light alloys.

The nature of silicon growths which form on amorphous silicon dioxide during epitaxial deposition in unmasked areas was investigated. Octahedral silicon crystals nucleate and grow on the oxide at pinholes, adjacent to foreign matter, and probably at oxygen-deficient sites. Generation of these oxygen-deficient sites on the oxide surface is shown to be thermody-namically favorable under usual deposition conditions. The conditions which affect saturation (SiCl4 concentration, flow rate, temperature) determine the number of sites on which silicon will nucleate and grow. Reaction product HCl is likely responsible for suppressing silicon growths on the oxide near exposed areas of silicon. Evidence is given that the oxide-silicon interaction occurs in hydrogen only and involves water as a transport agent. SINCE shortly after the first epitaxial layers of silicon and germanium were grown over large areas, efforts have been underway to grow selectively on specified portions of the surface. Such selective growth should be particularly applicable to monolithic integrated circuits. Usually the approach has been to use a mask to delineate the desired area,'-7 but the VLS methoda can also be used, and direct programmed atomic beam deposition has been suggested.9 The masking techniques may embody two forms: in one the mask is a material which can later be removed along with any growths attached to it; in the other, attempts are made to prevent growth on the mask, so that over a whole slice the only deposition that will occur is in the unmasked regions. The present work is concerned with only the latter case, and specifically with silicon. Joyce and Baldrey1 suggested the use of thermally grown silicon dioxide as a mask material and showed that for the proper choice of operating conditions (total flow, SiCl4 concentration, total deposition time, and temperature) spurious growth could be minimized and that if the deposition times were not too large, and the criteria not too stringent, a usable process occurred. Later Schnable et al 4 observed that after extended deposition times, during which most of the silicon dioxide became covered with growth, there was always a band of oxide around the exposed silicon area that was quite free of spurious silicon crystallites. This latter observation is particularly intriguing since it extends the hope that with proper precautions masking can be much more versatile than it presently is. A microstructural investigation was pursued to establish the mechanism of the pronounced benefits of traces of boron and zirconium on creep properties of a 55 Ni-20 Cr-15 (20-4 MO-3 Ti-3 A1 alloy at 1600°F. The mechanism of improvement of creep properties was found to be a pronounced stabilizing effect of traces of boron and zirconium on the grain boundaries of the alloy. The alloy with low boron and zirconium was subject to rapzd agglomeration of M23 C6 and in the grain boundaries, followed by depletion of y ' and intergranular microcracking at the grain boundaries transverse to applied stress. Brittle fracture then occurred by linking of microcracks. However, additions of zirconium, boron, and boron plus zirconium decreased this tendency in that order, allowing longer creep exposure and higher creep defor.mations before fracture occurred. VERY little information has been published describing the mechanism by which trace amounts of boron or zirconium improve the creep properties of complex nickel-base heat-resistant alloys, although the effect is now well recognized.1-4 Because the phenomenon is so important to properties and the effects are so striking, a study was made of the mechanism in a 55 Ni-20 Cr-15 Co-4 Mo-3 Ti-3 A1 alloy. It was believed that such a mechanistic approach would increase knowledge in theory of alloying and give a more basic understanding of alloy design to resist creep. The basic premise of the study was that boron or zirconium would alter the microstructural characteristics controlling creep and fracture to the extent that the effects could be identified by light and electron microscopy and by electron diffraction techniques. Characteristic of the microstructure of the Ti + Al-bearing nickel-base alloys is the dispersed precipitation of the intermetallic compound Ni,(Al, Ti), the ? ' phase, which is generally con- sidered to be the major source of high creep resistance.5-7 In addition, carbide phases have been identified8-10 and these can alter creep properties markedly.11 Since both the ?' and carbide transformations have been found to control properties, careful attention was paid to the effect of boron and zirconium on these transformations.

An analysis of indexing is given for an idealized plastic rock. Indexing refers to chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater. A method is indicated for computing the dependence of chip size and shape as well as force on the tooth for various tooth shapes as a function of crater configuration and distance to the previous crater. Pressure on the tooth is found to vary with depth of penetration after a critical depth has been reached. Damp sand model experiments indicate that simple solutions using linear and logarithmic spiral slip-line fields for Coulomb plastic materials give reasonable approximations to the failure patterns. Both idealized roller cone bits and fixed blade or drag bits are considered, and methods are presented for approximating the force on the bit and the chip volume when the rock is subjected to sufficiently high pressure to behave plastically. One of the primary objectives of drilling research investigations is to develop theoretical equations which can be used to predict the behavior of rock under drilling loading conditions. Since rocks usually fail in a brittle manner at atmospheric conditions, much current research is directed to studies of the brittle failure of rock under the action of drilling too1s. 1,2 The results of triaxial test on rocks indicate that both rock strength and ductility increase at high confining pressures.3 Recent results from single bit-tooth indentation experiments on dry rocks indicate that the transition from brittle to ductile failure under a bit tooth can occur at pressures sufficiently low to be of interest in oil well drilling.4 Single bit tooth experiments and analyses are not directly applicable to the drilling process since one of the important facets in drilling is the interaction between a bit-tooth and the previously formed crater. This interaction is referred to as indexing.' The purpose of the present paper is to indicate how plasticity theory can be applied to the analysis of indexing for plastic rock. Drag bit or fixed-blade drilling is considered and a discussion is given of the drilling action of an idealized roller cone bit. Results of simple experimental studies using a damp sand model are given as a method of visualizing the failure patterns in rocks under high confining pressures. These results are compared with plasticity theory using simple solutions based on linear and logarithmic spiral slip-lines. Discontinuous stress fields are proposed for drag bit drilling based upon the soil mechanics analysis of Shields. Brass is liable to failure under the combined influence of stress, certain corrosion media, and time, a phenomenon commonly termed season cracking or stress-corrosion cracking. The consequences of this are serious in applications of brass generally, including the important field of cartridge cases. Cartridge cases (70 Cu: 30 Zn) that fail from this cause may allow the escape of gas from the gun breech, a hazard to the shooter, and may not eject, thus temporarily putting the gun out of action. In loaded cartridge cases, the stress present is partly residual from the, drawing and necking operations and partly applied by the insertion of the projectile. Ammonia, present as a decomposition product of smokeless powder, air and moisture constitute corrosive media. The prevalence of season cracking has been reduced considerably, but not eliminated, during the past quarter of a century by low-temperature annealing to relieve stresses residual from fabrication, a method suggested by Diegel 38 yr. ago(I).2

TWO shafts have been completed since the spring of 1948 when underground development started, and three are now under construction. The new program provides two main ore shafts, Nos. 3A and 3B, spaced 195 ft apart and located on the south- western end of the orebody. It is planned that eventually 35,000 tons of copper ore per day will be hoisted by these identical four-compartment shafts. The third shaft of this new group is 600 ft from the present No. 1 shaft and will provide caged sup- plies for the underground mining operations. This No. 4 shaft has the largest cross-section of any shaft in Arizona.

An impoRtant factor affecting the rate and nature of corrosion of metals and alloys is the film, or coating, formed on the surface; and this may accelerate or retard corrosive action once started. The formation of films and coatings is intimately associated with the chemical composition and physical constitution of both the metal and the corroding medium. A film or coating may be either the corrosion product resulting from oxidation; that is, an oxide or salt, or a deposition of suspended matter from the corroding media upon the surface of the metal, or a mixture of both. The coating may adhere tightly or loosely to the surface of the corroded metal. In short, a film or coating is the reaction product of the corroding medium and the metal, which adheres to the surface of the metal and with which may be intermingled material from the attacking media not concerned in the chemical reactions. As the terms film and coating are used by different writers for very different things, distinction is made between the two, by the present writers, on the basis of thickness. Thus, a film is defined as a corrosion product or deposition, on the surface of a corroded metal, that is of such thickness that it cannot be measured by the metallurgical microscope. A coating, on the other hand, is of such thickness that it can be measured. If the resolving power of the 2-mm. (equivalent focal length) apochro-matic oil immersion objective (N.A. 1.4) is taken as the limit of the microscope, the limiting resolution is two lines that are 0.0002 to 0.0004 mm. apart. He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and should not be overlooked,—the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destfoyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were muqh the most rapidly destroyed.
