The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to August 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co.

It was shown that the simple precipitation theory of hardening3 adequately explained the aging phenomena, including certain so-called "anomalous" behaviors which had caused other investigators to reject or modify the precipitation theory. Two massive sulfide zinc-copper ore bodies are in quartz-sericite schist (probably formed by regional metamorphism of sediments) and andesite of the Precambrian Yavapai Series, on opposite sides of a large rhyolite mass. The Copper Queen ore body is conformable with bedding of its schist host rock, but the Old Dick ore body probably crosscuts the strata. A lens of low-grade mineralization in chlorite schist, associated with the Old Dick ore body, crosscuts through 150 feet of strata. The ore bodies are almost entirely enclosed by premineral faults with less than 150 feet of displacement. The minerals of the ores are pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, with minor arsenopyrite and galena and small amounts of intimately associated chlorite, sericite, and calcite. Old Dick sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have mutual boundaries, and sphalerite grains contain abundant exsolved chalcopyrite. Copper Queen sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have extremely ragged boundaries, the sphalerite contains no exsolved chalcopyrite, and the ore overall has a schistose texture. The pre-mineral fault on the hanging wall of the Copper Queen ore body has had 100 feet of post-mineral displacement. Wall rocks of the Old Dick ore body locally have been sericitized. Andesite and quartz-sericite schists for at least several hundred feet around both ore bodies have been chloritized erratically and contain traces of copper.

ALTHOUGH the Andean mountain belt, which contains almost all the metal deposits of the other South American nations, does not enter Brazil, this country is rich in mineral resources, for in area it accounts for half the continent and geologically it contains almost all of the Brazilian Shield. This great mass of ancient rocks has been relatively stable for a long time and forms a great area of plateaus and highlands interrupted only by the syncline which carries the Amazon River across it to the sea. Lowland Brazil - the great flood plains of the Amazon. Tocantins, Paraguay, and Parana Rivers-is of no interest to the miner, and in fact supports but a small proportion of the country's population. The highland area is divided into unequal parts by the Amazon River; the north half is underlain by the north lobe of the Brazilian Shield which extends into Venezuela as far as the Orinoco, and into the Guianas, and is known as the Guiana Highlands. Mineralization appears to have been weak in the Brazilian portion of these hills. In fact most of the ore deposits are to be found in the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia, although the neighboring states of Sao Paulo, Pernambuco, and Piauhy can also boast of some deposits. Goias and Matto Grosso are as yet incompletely prospected but are considered to contain reserves for the future.

Substantial deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper pert of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconform-able, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series, The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement. Introduction Under the waters of Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, situated on the Canadian National Railway, 142 miles west of Port Arthur, the presence of three ore zones containing red and brown Bessemer hematite has been established. These were discovered and have been partly explored by means of diamond and churn drilling, The positions of the ore zones, designated as A, B and C, are shown on the accompanying maps and cross sections. This exploratory work, begun in 1938 by Joseph Errington* and Julian G. Cross, has been carried on by Steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd., and was continued during the winter of 1941-1942. For more than 60 years explorers have known that large quantities of hard hema. tite float of good grade existed along the south shore of Steep Rock Lake, and the presence of ore beneath the lake was inferred by many early geologists and explorers. Despite numerous previous attempts to find ore in place, actual discovery awaited the recent period of intensive exploratory effort in Canada. The results obtained in the drill holes put down since 1938 by steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd. are not only of interest, in themselves, to those concerned with the development of ore deposits, but, taken in connection with the surface exposures of adjoining formations, they form the assemblage of facts from which the geological reasoning in this paper proceeds; accordingly, they are set out here as briefly and exactly as may be.

THE importance of aluminum-silicon alloys in the light alloy field is now generally recognized. Where silicon was once considered detrimental to the properties of aluminum, useful alloys now contain as much as 13 per cent. Furthermore, silicon is present as an impurity in aluminum of even the purest grades. Iron is another important impurity in aluminum and like silicon is found in small quantities in the purest aluminum available today. The manner of occurrence of iron and silicon in commercially pure aluminum and many of its alloys exerts, a very pronounced influence upon their properties. The effect of large quantities of iron in aluminum-silicon alloys is so detrimental that it has been found necessary to limit the allowable maximum percentage to as low a figure as is consistent with quantity production and satisfactory physical properties. The intimate relation existing between iron and silicon in aluminum and aluminum alloys makes necessary a more complete knowledge of this ternary system. This paper is divided into two principal parts, dealing respectively with aluminum-silicon solubility equilibria and the constitution of aluminum-iron-silicon alloys.

Culm is a general term used in the anthracite regions for many years to denote a mixture of coal, bony coal and impurities which is sent to the refuse-banks. Thus, 35 years ago culm contained the pea and buckwheat sizes of anthracite; but to-day, and as mentioned in this paper, culm is used specifically to denote the material which passes through the smallest screen in the anthracite-breaker. The smallest size of commercial anthracite is known as No. 3 buckwheat, barley, or bird's-eye coal, and is ordinarily made through a round-punched plate having openings & in. in diameter, and over a round-punched plate with openings 3/32 in. or 1/16 in. in diameter. Thus culm will consist of coal, bony coal, slate, gravel, iron pyrite, etc., ranging in size from 3/32 in. down to dust. Other local terms for culm are " slush," " silt," and " dirt." The first experiments towards the utilization of anthracite culm by briquetting, and the first briquetting-work done in this country, were in 1872 at Port Richmond Piers, Philadelphia, Pa., by E. F. Loiseau.1 Clay was used as a binder and the finished briquette was water-proofed with shellac, etc. Excessive cost was given as the reason for discontinuing work at this plant.

President Howe : It is not so clear to me that the facts which Dr. Waldo brings forward really argue that the nature of the combination between copper and aluminum differs from that of the combination between copper and zinc or copper and tin. As regards electric conductivity, I suppose that the fact, which he thinks points to a special intimate kind of union between aluminum and copper, is that the line in his Fig. 1 is neither straight nor uniformly curved, but that its curvature varies rapidly, not to say abruptly. But we find just such variation in like curves for the copper-zinc and copper-tin alloys. Thus, a slight addition of zinc or tin to copper causes a change in color wholly out of proportion to the quantity added; and, as we add zinc or tin to copper, the tenacity rises very greatly, only to fall off abruptly with further additions of either of these metals. THOUGH recent months have seen a rapid decline in lead-smelting activity and consequent uncertainty as to the future, the first half of the year showed progress in keeping with similar activity in other metals. Demand for scrap increased and various lead-bearing materials found their way to plants producing secondary lead. Some of these materials introduced complications into normal smelting procedure and were the cause of many conferences among plant officials attempting to find the most satisfactory method of treatment. If a blast furnace is to do itself justice it must be run with an open charge. Troubles inevitably result when materials are added to a charge which tighten it up and pre- vent free burning of the coke and con- sequent rapid smelting with a clean hearth This fact has long been recognized by plants producing primary lead, but only recently only it received the attention it deserves.

An investigation of the factors af-fec.ting the inter-zonal flow of fluids in the casing-wellbore annrc1rt.s of an oil or gas ivell is presented Laborntory tests revealed that failure of the caring-cement bond allows communi-cation of fluid at pressure differentials near 1.000 psi. Perforating with a 11011011: carrier gun does not shatter or crack the cement sufficiently to allow communication through these cracks and does not seriously affect the casing-cement bond failure pressure. The pressure to cause communication at the casing-cement bond can he increared to 3,000 psi by. limiting pipe deformation during cementing and subsequent operations. Communication can be prevented, however. up to pressures sufficient to cause the cement to fail or the casing to col-lapse, by attaching to the casing a seal ring of deformable ruhber molded between two steel flanges. When installed, one flange is attached rigidlv to the casing to serve as back-up for the gasket While tile other flange is movable. To date, these gasket seal rings have been field-tested in 27 Wells. Althotrgh communication has been noted in two wells, inter-zonal flow has been prevented in other wells in the same area by installing more seal rings between the communicaring zones. INTRODUCTION The inter-zonal flow of fluids behind casing cemented in oil wells during normal production or stimulation operations is a major operating problem. If it cccurs during production operations. it can seriously limit the pressure to which a reservoir may be depleted without harmful invasion of unwanted fluids. If it occurs during stimulation operations, it may preclude the possibility of stimulating the desired zone. This communication can be caused by failure of the bond between the casing and cement, failure of the bond between the cement and formation, or failure of the cement itself. This paper presents the results of an investigation of factors affecting com-munication at the casing-cement bond and methods which aid in preventing it. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS The laboratory tests performed in this study were divided into three phases. The first phase consisted of tests to determine if perforating would shatter and crack the cement sheath so severely that communication would occur through the cement itself. The second phase consisted of tests to determine more precisely the cause for the casing-cement bond failure. The third phase consisted of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various de-formable seals attached to the casing in preventing communication. EFFECT OF PERFORATING, The effect of perforating was invest~gated in tests performed with apparatus shown on Fig. 1. Cement was poured into the annulur space hetween 5%-in. casing and 8%-in. casing and allowed to cure for 72 hours. The apparatus was then perforated with a hollow carrier gun containing eight duPont 26-A shaped charges. Bull plugs were placed over the perforations in the 8 5/8-in. casing and hydraulic pressure was applied inside the 5 1/2i-in. casing. The pressure to cause fluid communication past the cement sheath was observed and termed the "bond failure pressure". Several different cement compositions were included in these tests, the results of which are shown in Table 1. In Tests 1 through 4 of Table 1, bond failure occurred at- the inter- .

Never having done it before, it took us all day and until 11 at night to select and pack for a four-day back- pack trip up Lake Chelan last month. When we were through, we couldn't lift our own pack and Sylvia's, OUT spouse's, we barely managed to budge. Nevertheless, the next morning we were at the dock to board the Laldy of the Lake for the 3 ½ -hr boat trip to Lucerne. Our dress and accouterments creating the appearance of a veritable expedition into the wilderness made a sharp contrast with our fellow passengers, a senior citizens tour group from Spokane. We had come out to Seattle for the SME Fall Meeting and were taking advantage of the occasion for a vacation trip back to Lucerne and Holden where we had lived briefly 25-years ago, and a backpack trip up Railroad Creek from Holden to the Glacier Peak country, weather permitting. No matter what you say, weather is important, and this is one of the ingredients that went into making the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit in Seattle, September 22-24, a thoroughly delightful experience for the 700 plus persons who attended. Seattle is a beautiful city, but with late September sunshine, which we experienced, it is the best. The second ingredient, is a swinging host committee. Under the leadership of Don Anderson and Tom Van Zandt, co-chairmen, and Mrs. Cecilia Reed, Ladies Program, superb hospitality and fine arrangements were blended. Earl Beistline, from Fairbanks, organized a two-day short course on arctic operations which preceded the meeting and drew an attendance of 44. Dick Robbins, in charge of arrangements, provided Masters-at- arms for technical sessions and a presentation of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Welcoming Luncheon. Eric Cheney's field trips ranged far and wide with events both before and after the meeting. David (Jeff) Kroft, capably managed audio-visual operations with a group of students from the University of Washington. Charles Hochmuth worked long, hard and effectively before and during the meet- ing on finances. Hank Reed, managed an authentic three-ring circus as Entertainment Chairman. His activities covered two cocktail receptions for all registrants and a dinner-dance. Dolph Campbell and Joe Hackbarth provided publicity by press and TV (see p. 37-40). SME's meetings have certain characteristics and possibly not all of these are known to everyone. The first of these is the deliberate involvement of the AIME Section in the area of the meeting. Most trade shows and conventions are run 100% by a professional staff and although SME staff could also do this, it has been our experience that a more friendly and better meeting results when the local members apply their talents. Actually SME only considers a site for a meeting after it has received an invitation from a Section. The knowledge of local conditions which Section committeemen bring to a meeting is of great value.

Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government's participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The commercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depend¬ing upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

At the present time, the designer of dies for metal powder pressing is handicapped by relative ignorance of stress distribution and frictional effects at the interior surface of the die. Unckell was the first to develop a method for the study of wall friction. He used three Brinell balls on which the die rested during pressing. The total frictional wall force was determined by the size of impression these balls left on a soft metal plate. Since the method does not give radial pressures, or distribution of such pressures, coefficients of friction could not be determined. Although Unckel measured density distribution, he was not able to determine radial or shear stresses. Shaler2 has proposed theoretical expressions for the stress and density distribution within cylindrical compacts during pressing, in accordance with the experimental results of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff.3 By application of Siebel's method,4 Kamm et a13 plotted stress trajectories for two compacts. From the stress trajectories they calculated coefficients of friction from point to point along the die wall. As pointed out by Shaler in the discussion of Ref. 3, these values are based on progressive point-to-point calculations on finite size grid squares across the compact. In the region of the die wall such calculated values may therefore have considerable cumulative error. The purpose of the present paper is to develop an experimental method by which the nonhydrostatic pressures and shears acting on the interior wall of a cylindrical die can be measured. Such measurements can then he correlated with existing data to aid in the explanation of the pressing process. The method used is based on the elastic: properties of the thick-walled tube used as the die. The principle of super-position of force systems on an elastic body is assumed to hold. Electric strain gauges were mounted in adjacent positions on the exterior die wall in order to get an exact measurement of the variation of tangential strain over the length of the die during pressing. While in this paper, measurements in terms of only tangential strains are considered, it is well to note that similar calculations may be set up for axial strains. The latter are not preferred, since they tend to be smaller than the tangential strains and therefore permit less sensitive measurements. Discussion in this work is restricted to compacts pressed from both ends, since the elastic deformation of the die is then more amenable to analysis. Before choosing the electric strain gauge method, a more direct line of attack was considered and discarded. The discarded idea was the insertion of a pressure gauge through a hole in the die wall.* The gauge would have been in the form of a small piston. If pressure were exerted against such a gauge, it would move outward along a radius of the die. One disadvantage of the scheme is its inability to measure shears along the die wall. Another more serious disadvantage is the disturbance caused by the device itself. It would serve to change the forces it was designed to measure. No matter how small the movement of the gauge, when pressure is applied a discontinuity would exist in the wall surface at that point. Due to the stress concentration caused by the hole, abnormal deflections of the die wall would occur around the gauge. During pressing, powder would be forced into the resulting depression. The depression would then become larger with increasing compacting pressure. Powder, not being a fluid, is capable of supporting shear. The ease with which it would flow into the die wall depression to further move the piston is an indication, not of the radial pressure at that point, but of the state of shear retarding the movement. Thus the "pressure" gauge is really a criterion of flowability, and of the capability of the powder to support shear. For these reasons, it was decided that the electric strain method, herein employed, was more reliable, if more indirect. The gauges and lead wires, mounted on the external die wall do not in any way affect the behavior of the metal powder or the die during pressing. WHEN Germany invaded Poland in September, 1939, the only operating helium plant in the United States was that near Amarillo. Texas, supplied with helium-bearing natural gas from the near-by Cliffside gas field. Today the Bureau of Mines has five plants capable of producing more than 25 times the prewar helium output of the Amarillo plant. Two of the plants have received Army-Navy "E" flags for their part in the faraway "Battle of the Atlantic," where heliumfilled Navy blimps chased Adolf Hitler's submarines away from American shores. Meteorologists, watching balloons carried high into the stratosphere by helium, determined weather conditions that influenced the selection of D-day and dates for other military operation. Demand for helium doubled overnight when the Navy decided to expand its lighter-than-air activities; and as the blimp patrol proved effective, the helium demand became ever greater. A tribute to the success of the Bureau of Mines in meeting the demand for helium was paid by the late Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, in a letter to the Secretary of the Interior on April 10, 1944.
