MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. As the importance of phosphate rock has become more prominent in the thoughts of our economists, a more intelligent approach has been made to mining problems. THIS process was reported upon by the Canadian Commission in 1904, and much detailed information was also given in a paper by Chief Engineer V. Engelhardt.1 Believing that some of the latest particulars of the process will be of interest, I submit the following data. At Gysinge in Sweden during the year ending May 31, 1906, from a fixed furnace giving 1 ton (2,240 lb.) of steel per tap, there were produced 950 tons of tool-steel and special steel ingots. . In carbon and iron tool-steels all the usual tempers were made. The bulk of this steel was made from charges composed of about 80 per cent of Swedish white pig-iron and 20 per cent. of steel-scrap. The percentage of carbon was regulated by the addition of briquettes. Other charges were made from Swedish white iron and steel-scrap. The average time taken per charge, for the year, when adding briquettes, was 7* hr., and the electric energy consumed was 1,128 units (kilowatt-hours) per ton. The average time per charge for white-iron and scrap charges was 5.5 hr., and the electric energy consumed was 886 units per ton. These consumptions include all time and energy lost from various causes, such as bad water-supply, ice, etc. It is quite ordinary practice to complete the charges with briquettes in 6.5 hr., and without briquettes in 5 hr., as shown by the following typical charges White pig-iron, 1,457; steel-scrap, 439; briquettes, 220; ferrosilicon (50 per cent. of silicon), 17 ; ferromanganese (80 per cent. of manganese), 15 lb. ; and aluminum, 1 oz.=

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity, ' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

An investigation was conducted on fine grained airon wire to measure the influence of the temperature of deformation on strain aging near room temperature. Specimens were deformed various amounts at 77°, 195°, or 273°K and aged. The strain aging was followed by either internal friction or return of the yield-point measurements. The results show that strain aging occurs in three stages. During the first stage there is small, almost immediate return of the yield point. The solute carbon concentration, as mesured by internal friction, remains constant in stage I but is lower than the concentration in the unstrained condition. In the second stage, the solute concentration decreases while the magnitude of the yield point increases. In the third stage, the solute atoms continue to drain from the solution, the yield point approaches a maximum, and the strain-hardening coefficient and flow curve increase. The kinetics of the strain aging reaction are not the same for the two sets of measurements since the internal friction results lag behind the yield-point measurements. However, the strain-aging kinetics measured at 44° and 64°C showed no effect due to the difference in initial deformation temperature; nor were the strain aging kinetics influenced by low-temperature anneals at 77°, 195°, and 273°K. 1 HE object of this investigation was to measure the effect of initial deformation temperature on the strain aging of a-iron by tensile tests (i.e., return of the yield point) and internal friction methods, to correlate the results of the two measuring methods, and to measure the effect of low-temperature annealing (<273°K) after low-temperature deformation upon strain aging. The experiments were performed on fine-grained a-iron wire containing 0.02 wt pct c.l According to Thomas and Leak,&apos; return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solid solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of the aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,3 during aging the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point on subsequent testing. It has been shown that after low-temperature neutron bombardment, a-iron goes through a stage of recovery at low temperatures which can be attributed to the annealing of iron interstitials&apos; and/or vacancies.4 If, after low-temperature deformation, there is an interaction during a low-temperature anneal between mobile point defects and the solute atoms (i.e., carbon atom interaction with vacancy or iron interstitial), it is possible that some solute atoms will be found at defect sites other than dislocations. Such changes in the sinks for the carbon atoms might be expected to alter the strain-aging kinetics sufficiently to be detected by either inter-

DOES mining pay? Inasmuch as the whining of minerals from Nature is one of the world&apos;s principal sources of new wealth, this question is of general economic interest but it is obviously of even more vital concern to investors and those engaged in mining. In a previous article on "Wage Costs in the Mineral Industries,&apos; published in the November issue, I attempted to show that wages paid workers on the job accounted for, roughly, 50 per cent of the mine dollar. Salaries normally range over 5 per cent - lower for large metal mines but higher in stone quarries and minor nonmetallic min. in, industries. Purchases of supplies, materials. fuel, and power generally aggregate within the range of 15 to 25 per cent of total receipts, with the average well under 20 per cent. Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after it has been pulverized to pigmentary size. The current world production of iron oxide pig¬ments is estimated by the author to be between 450,000 and 550,000 tons based on 1969 data. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world ac¬counts for its use in prehistoric man&apos;s artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man&apos;s first paint test fence which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, constituting about 7 % of the earth&apos;s crust, iron oxides have the advantages of low cost, permanency, and are not toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when coloring was desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments pro¬duced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States alone, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $28,000,000 in 1970 (Stipp, 1970). Nomenclature With the increasing importance of the syn¬thetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pig¬ments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products which are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a com¬mercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pig¬ments. Natural pigment ore sources are se¬lected for their special physical-chemical prop¬erties and can command a premium price. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pig¬mentary sized particles are produced as opposed to comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments.

THE chief difficulty in determining oxygen in steels is its tendency to form a variety of compounds. Almost every element, found as an ingredient in steels, maybe expected to be present as an oxide. Some of these oxides have widely differing properties, and consequently behave differently when attempts are made to reduce them by the vacuum fusion method. As I pointed out in a paper published in the Transactions of the A.S.S.T., Vol. 20, No. 1, many experimenters are spending considerable time and effort in attempting to deter¬mine the degree of completeness of the above reactions, and hold different opinions on the matter. In studying this subject the following table, taken from Hodgman and Lange&apos;s "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" may be used as a guide.

IRON ore and bituminous coal are the two basic raw materials for the whole iron and steel industry. The ore furnishes the iron and is absolutely necessary-all iron and steel products come directly or in- directly from the iron ores. The bituminous coal furnishes the carbon needed for the smelting of the ores and for the fuel used in all the processes of iron and steel manufacture. The necessary carbon could be furnished in some other form besides bituminous coal. In fact, it is only since the Civil War that bituminous coal has been the chief source of the carbon for metallurgical fuel. For many years only charcoal made from the forests furnished the carbon for smelting iron ores. About 90 years ago, anthracite coal was first used as blast-furnace fuel and for many years continued to be the chief blast furnace and steel making source for carbon. Even in my own blast-furnace experience, I have used charcoal in Canada and anthracite in Pennsylvania for smelting ores in an iron blast furnace. Bituminous coal, now almost exclusively the source for the carbon used in smelting iron ores, also furnishes most of the heat used in the steel-making processes. It is seldom used in blast furnaces in its natural condition, hut is first coked in beehive, or in by-product coke ovens; such bituminous coal is called "coking coal." Bituminous coal that is suitable for making the producer gas used in the open-hearth steel process is called gas coal. Any bituminous coals suitable for making blast-furnace coke or foundry coke, or that can be satisfactorily used for making producer gas, are classed as metallurgical coals and as such are to be considered in my proposed plan for the evaluation of metallurgical coals. According to Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 449 these coals comprised 22 per cent of the bituminous coals mined in this country in 1923.

Pressure information for use in material-balance calculations is obtained, where possible, from pressure build-up surveys in shut-in wells. Using proper extrapolation methods, static pressures are obtained which, by averaging, give the field static pressure. Often, particularly in fields with a large number of wells, only spot pressure readings are available. A graphical method is presented here which enables the determination of the corrections which must be applied to the spot readings to give an estinzate of the static pressure. Although the static pressures thus obtained are not so reliable as those from build-up surveys, they are more nearly correct than the spot readings themselves for use in material-balance calculations. INTRODUCTION The average static pressure in a bounded reservoir is determined from a number of individual-well pressure measurements. Where pressure build-up curves are available, extrapolation methods such as described in Ref. 3 may be used to determine the static pressure in the drainage area of each individual well. The possibility of using pressure build-up curves presupposes that each well being surveyed is closed in during a certain period and that, during this time, a pressure recorder is left suspended in the hole. For surveys in fields with a large number of wells, this is usually not feasible for economic and other reasons. Either a large number of pressure recorders would have to be used simultaneously or, using a limited number of recorders, the time interval needed to complete a field-wide survey would be too long. The data obtained for this incomplete coverage are insufficient to permit reliable averaging of the few calculated static pressures over the entire reservoir. In many such cases another type of pressure information is available, i.e., spot pressure readings. During this type of pressure survey all wells are closed-in simultaneously and, after a reasonable shut-in time (e.g., three days), pressure readings are taken by running the recorder in and out of each successive well. These surveys, which are less expensive, are often taken at regular intervals, say once or twice a year. In fact, such surveys are required by the state regulatory bodies in many portions of the united States. These spot readings are normally lower than the static (fully built-up) pressure due to the relatively short shut-in time. No direct means of extrapolating such a reading to the static pressure is available because no pressure build-up record is obtainable. Consequently, these data are inferior to pressure build-up information as a basis for estimating the stabilized reservoir pressure in the drainage area of a specific well. For the common case where abundant spot readings but only a few pressure build-up surveys are available, our studies suggest that it may be possible to design a program which will combine the two types of information and provide an estimate of the average reservoir pressure that is more reliable than that obtainable solely from either set of data. in time) gives a point marked p. With the introduction of rotary drilling in the Gulf Coast area, some thirty-two years ago, and its subsequent spread to other producing localities in the United States, there has been a constant change in the design of equipment. Only the general features remain, namely the rotating drill stem and the circulating mud. Only recently have the properties of mud and their behavior received attention from petroleum engineers, but circulating problems in present deep drilling demand further study and understanding. It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the relative changes in the apparent viscosity of muds with changes in temperature and to discover other physical effects due to heat. Very little information has been published regarding the effects of temperature on the viscosity of drilling muds. Maustl states: "The viscosity of most muds is decreased on heating, but the interesting thing is that the degree of flocculation is also increased on heating. There will be a greater tendency to seal off formations at high temperatures than at low temperatures." With regard to the effect of temperature on viscosity and yield point, Herrick2 states: "The variation of yield point and viscosity of mud with temperature.....is not very clearly brought out by the data available. Both appear to decrease slightly with increasing temperature up to 200&apos; F." The experimental results presented in this paper further emphasize this point. Two types of viscosimeters are available for measuring the apparent viscosities of drilling muds: the efflux tube type as used by Herrick3 and Marsh, and the torsional type such as the McMichael or the Stormer viscosimeters. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. USE of oxygen in metallurgical operations was investigated by a committee of unusually able engineers more than ten years ago. A record of their work appeared under the title "The Use of Oxygen or Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical and Allied Processes," Serial 2502, Report of Investigations, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Shortly thereafter the A.I.M.E. published "Use of Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical Operations," based on a symposium at the New York meeting, February 1, 924. Quoting from the Bureau of Mines report In view of the many recent developments in oxygen manufacture, and considering the increasing cost and decreasing quality of our raw materials, the Bureau of Mines has taken the matter of the application of oxygen or oxygenated air to the metallurgical centers for consideration and has appointed an advisory committee to study the problem.

SAFETY practice or the elimination of accidents in our coal mines is specifically a problem of management. It cannot be delegated to any governmental agency except that the various coal-producing states do and should have some minimum safety standard laws. However, the legislative method of attempting to control mine accidents is ineffective because of the delay between the necessity and the action. It will always be impossible to keep our various state mining laws up to date; and when the law says you must do a certain thin there is a tendency to do this and no more. SINGLE slip and a single parallel array of edge dislocations have been obtained in silicon single crystals by homogeneously bending them in a four-point dead-loading device at 1000°C around the [211] axis with [253.] as the tensile axis which encloses an angle of 40° with the glide plane. Other orientations or lower temperatures proved unsuitable. The homogeneity of the bending was checked by the method shown in Fig. 1. The chemically polished specimen was exposed to parallel light from a microscope-stage lamp. The sharpness of the focus of the reflected light is an approximate measure of the circularity of the sample. This method permitted the determination of the actual radius of bent specimens within 10 pct accuracy. The etching solution developed to show up dislocations consisted of the following volume parts: 2 HF, 1 HNO,, 2 CH,COOH, 1 a solution of 5 wt pct of CuNO, in water (Rosi&apos;). The acetic-acid content was adjusted to produce fine well-defined etch-pits in about 2 min at room temperature. The effectiveness of the etch did not depend on the crystal-lographic orientation of the face etched. The number of etch pits produced after a given deformation was checked in the usual way against the Cahn formula&apos; and showed good agreement. As it is to be expected from the orientation of the primary system there are slip steps on the top and bottom faces but not on the side faces (perpendicular to the bending axis), whereas etch pits appear on the side faces but not on the top and bottom faces. This is different only for occasional dislocations of a secondary glide system. All the micrographs included have been taken in places where the most of secondary glide could be seen. From this it is evident that in the homegeneously deformed region the number of secondary dislocations was less than 1 in 1000 of the primary type. Dislocation Distribution—A series of tests with varying amounts of deformation is shown in Figs. 2(a-c). An observation that can readily be made from these pictures is that the linear density of dislocations within slip lines is relatively constant and independent of the amount of deformation. "Slip line" in this context is understood to mean a line that is a straight connection of individual etch pits. The heavily pitted bands which can be seen in each of these three pictures may be resolved fairly definitely, at higher magnifications, into many "slip lines" the distance between them being of the order of 0.5p The distance between dislocations in slip lines is of the order of 2p and it is also fairly constant in going from the neutral zone outward. The higher over-all dislocation density in the outer regions of any sample and the higher total number in a more heavily deformed sample, are effected by a larger number of "slip lines." The relative constancy of the dislocation distance within an individual slip line is surprising. The absence of pile-ups" may imply, if there is no rear- rangement on unloading," that there are no substantial obstacles to slip in this case. Allan Gibb, Mount Perry, Queensland, Australia (communication to the Secretary):—In drawing conclusions from his observations, Mr. Van Liew has apparently overlooked the reduction in weight that takes place in the content of the converter. The percentage-compositions of the matte, etc., are not directly comparable for determining the rate of elimination of the impurities; and, in the absence of exact weights (which in such an operation could not be obtained), it is necessary to determine the relation between the impurities and the copper with which they are combined at various stages, in order to get data that are comparable. Owing to a portion of the copper being removed in the slag, etc., the weight of copper in the converter is not a fixed quantity, but.it is sufficiently approximate to permit very reasonable comparison. The analytical data given by Mr. Van Liew, reduced to this basis (a ratio between the impurities and the copper with which they are combined), are shown in the table on page 958. From this table it will be evident that Mr. Van Liea&apos;s conclusions as to the source of heat at digerent stages are not quite correct. THE Fall Meetings of the Institute of Metals Division and of the Iron and Steel Division were held in Cleveland from Tuesday, Oct. 20, to Thursday, Oct. 22, as a part of the National Metal Congress. The registration at the technical sessions was something over 450 and the attendance at the joint dinner of the two Divisions on Wednesday evening taxed the capacity of the dining room. The president of the British Institute of Metals, W. R. Barclay, consulting metallurgist to the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.; of London, was in attendance at several of the technical sessions and was one of the after-dinner speakers at the banquet. He commented on the desirability of greater international amity and cooperation in these troubled times and of the role that technical societies, such as the A. I. M. E. and his own British Institute of Metals, can and indeed are playing in bringing this to pass, with their membership and contacts reaching to all parts of the world. He also referred to the new reciprocal membership arrangements in effect between the A.I.M.E. and the British Institute of Metals.
