Mobile cranes on tires are perhaps the most important accessory in truck-haulage pits. They usually are of 20-ton capacity at short radius and with outriggers but have considerable overload capacity. Standard booms are 30 ft but have 10-ft extensions with which they are usually operated. Cranes have two engines, both originally gasoline, but 150-hp Diesel engines have been found more reliable for the propulsion motor, the 100-hp gasoline motors being retained for hoisting. Pro- visions are made for dropping the ballast counter- weight to reduce axle weights to legal limits for highway travel. The weights are carried on a regular truck or are transported on an extra trailer axle behind the crane. Tractors-Probably equalling the cranes in usefulness are the track-laying tractors which are used to prepare roads and other surfaces, to clean up at the shovel, and for dozing on stripping dumps. A new type of tractor mounted on rubber tires has been tried out on the Mesabi Range for the past year and a half. The advantage of this design is its mobility which makes it capable of taking care of the spill at the shovel and then running to the dump to clean up. Alternating between these two jobs, it relieves heavy tractors that can be used to better advantage on heavier work that does not require so much traveling. This tractor can travel at speeds of 12 to 13 mph and is designed to facilitate repair of the expendable parts. Weaknesses have developed in the internal construction which have seriously marred the performance record of this unit, but when used within its capacity it is quite successful.

Recent work with controlled laboratory tests.' field experience and a new analytical approach indicate that casing centralization, pipe movement and relative rheological properties between the mud and cement (yield point and density) are the three controlling factors in successfu1 primary cementing of dual casing. Turbulent flow has been demonstrated to be unnecessary under the severe displace ment conditions of parallel dual strings of casing. Simultaneous reciprocation of dual casing in directionally drilled boreholes is highly dependent on centralization and on the rapid initiation of pipe movement once the casing has been run to total depth. Successful cementing of 30 out of 32 dual, 3%-in casing wells substantiated these conclusions. A review of 15 dual, 3 1/2-in. casing wells completed prior to the adoption of these principles disclosed only one success. Mathematical and graphical techniques permit the engineer to analyze and anticipate the success or failure of a cementing operation. Standoff, mud displacement and reciprocation can be analyzed mathematically and planned in deep, directional or straight boreholes by review of annular geometry, relative rheological properties between the mud and cement, and forces caused by caring weight, functional drag and differential sticking. Introduction The objective in primary cementing is to displace the drilling fluid with cement that will bond to the formation and casing to prevent communication through the annulus. The predominant cause of failure appears to be channels of gelled mud that remain in the annulus after cementing.1 '* Past investigations have noted many procedures that could improve the displacement process.2-' These procedures include centralization, chemical preflushes, mechanical mud cake removers, controlled flow rates in certain regimes, pipe movement an1 control of mud and cement properties. Not until recently have the effects of many of these procedures been isolated so that their individual importance could be determined. In a recent paper,' a comprehensive and analytical laboratory study of various factors controlling the displacement process concluded that there are three major factors in obtaining complete mud displacement by the cement slurry. 1. Good relative rheological properties between the mud and cement. The cement should be heavier and have a yield point and plastic viscosity higher than the mud being displaced. Buoyancy forces often can dominate the displacement process. 2. High degree of standoff or centralization. The more centered the casing, the greater the likelihood of complete mud displacement and removal. 3. Pipe movement obtained by rotation or reciprocation. Often unfavorable rheological properties between the mud and cement, and poor standoff can be compensated by pipe movement. This work demonstrates the compatibility of the latter concepts with field results extended to the more severe dual casing displacement process. Early Experience With Dual 3'/t-In. Primary Cementing Early slim casing completions in the West Delta Block 73 field, offshore Louisiana, included 17 dual 3%-in., 3 single 3% -in. and 1 dual 2% -in. casing installations. Table I provides data on these earlier wells. Usually, common Class A cement was placed across the pay zone and 12 percent gel cement was placed to a height of 500 ft above the highest productive sand. Centralizers (6%-in. OD maximum expansion) were placed two or three per joint on both casing strings from total depth through the completion intervals and at least one per joint for the remainder of the cement sheath. A number of techniques and procedures were attempted to improve cementing success. Casing was run simultaneously or separately with a number of mud conditioning and circulating techniques. Mechanical aids such as cement bonders, slmiding sleeves, turbulizers and various sizes and strengths of centralizers were used. Common and gel cements were mixed with fresh or sea water with a number of different additives to control retardation and dispersion. Cements were thinned and mixed at high rates to try to induce turbulent flow in the annulus. On one well the "slow flow" method was used." Perforating was accomplished with a jet orienting gun. Unsuccessful cement jobs were indicated by production of extraneous fluids or by pressure communication between zones. I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. THE Midvale plant of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company consists of a flotation mill for concentrating sulphide ores of lead and zinc by differential flotation to produce three separate concentrates, one of lead, one of zinc, and one of iron pyrite; and a lead smelter for smelting ores and concentrates to produce base lead bullion, The plant, including its shops, laboratories, office, railroad yards which serve both mill and smelter, and areas reserved for tailing ponds and slag dumps, covers 646 acres on the right bank of the Jordan River at Midvale, Utah. It is twelve miles south of Salt Lake City and sixteen miles east of the West Mountain mining district at Bingham Canyon from which is drawn a large part of its ore supply. Custom ores are treated as well as the product of Company mines.

In a recent paper1 the authors presented information on a refinement of the Rohn type of creep test with data on pure iron that exemplified the behavior of the apparatus. The present paper extends that work to nickel and cobalt and to the examination of the comparative high-temperature properties of two widely used commercial alloys. Careful attention has been given to the effect of plastic deformation in decreasing creep rate, using the elementary metals iron, nickel and cobalt for purposes of analysis. In any endeavor to develop new materials for high-temperature service one soon encounters a real problem as to the sort of test to be employed in evaluating the commercial possibilities of the alloys. At one time it was considered satisfactory to determine the tensile strengths at elevated temperatures and to use these values as a criterion for the commercial application of the alloys. More recently the proportional limit has been used as a means of classification. Data obtained from a form of bend test have also shown promise as providing a "merit index" of high-temperature serviceability.= Koerber and Pomp3 state that since the influence of testing time is small, the high-temperature yield point of steel furnishes sufficiently reliable and concordant values up to about 350" C. (and a maximum of 450" C. for alloy steels) to serve as a suitable basis for comparison evaluations of materials and for judging permissible stresses. Koerber and Pomp consider, however, that above these temperatures creep limit must be substituted for the high-temperature yield point as the all-important characteristic of the material. THE British are worried about the postwar possibilities of their coal mining industry. Indeed, there are causes for this worry, with the aver- age 1943 cost of production at about $5.40 per long ton, compared to $3.20 in 1938. Average production per man day has dropped from 1.12 in 1938 to 1.03 long tons in 1943. As a comparison, production per man day in the United States is approximately 5 long tons. The average day wage in the British mines is now a little aver $4; in 1938 the average day wage was about $2.25. Great Britain produced 227 million long tons in 1938 from their deep mines, and in 1943 production was 194.5 million, with an additional 4.5 million from strip mines. To meet present wartime needs, output is being supplemented by the production of strip- mined coal, an industry that did not exist prior to the war. Strip mining is now producing at the rate of 15 million long tons per year.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN connection with the work of testing structural materials for the use of the U. S. Government at the laboratories of the technologic branch of the U. S. Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., from September, 1904, to April, 1909, and since then at Pittsburg, Pa., large quantities of sand, gravel, and crushed stone have been needed from time to time, besides samples of building-stone, clays, and other quarry-products. In many instances it has been necessary to obtain single samples of sand, gravel, or crushed stone in lots of a car-load or more. For obvious reasons all these collections have had to be made by a representative of the Survey. As the work progressed it was found essential that numerous geologic data should be gathered regarding the materials collected, in order that they might be properly classified as to kind of material, source, geologic age, etc., and that they might be rated according to quantity available, accessibility to transportation facilities, approximate costs, suitability for special purposes, etc., and that notes might be taken regarding undeveloped deposits of possible value. Furthermore, it was desired that the selection of materials for tests should be made broadly, so as to cover, first, the representative types of material, and later, if possible, the typical materials of the more important building-centers in the United States. In order to insure a certain degree of uniformity in this work and economy of effort and expense, it was decided that as much of the sampling as was practicable should be done by a member of the. geologic branch, whose regular field-trips could be combined conveniently with those necessary for procuring materials for the laboratory. During parts of the last three years I have been engaged in field-work of this sort.

This paper presents a computer method to obtain the shape factors and equal cell volumes of the channels for any well spacing pattern from a potentiometric model. By using this program the authors have processed the data for the seven-spot, direct line-drive and the staggered line-drive patterns. The data for the five-spot pattern had been previously processed by a noncomputer method and are included for completeness. The shape factors and volumes for the channels are presented in tables for those who want to use them to process data using their own permeability relationships and viscosities of their reservoir oils. The authors have used the data and sets of representative permeability curves to process sample calculationr of waterflood performances. The comparison of the calculated results shows that the influence of well spacing is small. The permeabilities of the reservoir rock to oil and water had a greater influence on oil recovery for a given pore-volume throughput of water than the well spacing pattern. The more water-wet the reservoir rock, the better the possibility of permeabilities which are conducive to good recovery. The viscosity of the reservoir oil also influences the recovery more than the well spacing pattern. The reduction in the percentage recovery of oil with increase in viscosity of the reservoir oils is small when oil viscosities are in the range of 0.1 to 3. Above this range the reductions in recoveries are extensive. Sample comparisons of the time required for different patterns to recover the oil are presented. Results of an example calculation are given to show the effect of the permeability profile on recovery. INTRODUCTION The effect of well spacing pattern on the recovery of oil when flooding with either gas or water has been studied by many investigators. Muskat et al.1 presented an analysis using conductivity, sweep efficiency and unit mobility to the time of breakthrough. Dyes et al.2 used experimental techniques (X-ray shadowgraphs) and different mobility ratios. They presented quantitatively the relationship between mobility and sweep efficiency at and after breakthrough. Hauber3 presented a method to predict waterflood performance for arbitrary well spacing patterns and mobility ratios. Craig et al.,4 using techniques similar to Dyes et al. to determine sweep efficiency for a five-spot pattern, added the use of relative permeability curves at breakthrough and thereafter. Douglas et al.5 sed rela- tive permeabilities and continuously changing saturations throughout the entire five-spot flood pattern. In obtaining their solutions they used finite-difierence equations. Hig-gins and Leighton6,7 also used relative permeabilities and continuously changing saturations throughout the pattern before and after breakthrough. They employed techniques that process a flood-pattern calculation on the computer in about one minute. The methods of Douglas et al. and Higgins and Leighton both checked closely the laboratory results for a wide range of mobility ratios. This paper presents some sample performances calculated by the Higgins and Leighton method that show the effect on recovery of different permeabilities and viscosities using the seven-spot, the line-drive and the staggered line-drive, as well as the fivespot flood pattern. No previous paper has presented these data using different permeability curves and continuously changing saturations throughout the flood patterns. The paper also presents (1) the results and analyses of the flood-pattern prediction, (2) the computer techniques for determining the shape factors and volumes from the potentiometric models for the foregoing flood patterns, and (3) the shape factors and volumes of the channels of the flood pattern in the event reservoir engineers may like to process waterflood calculations using their own permeability curves and reservoir oils. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD VOLUMES AND SHAPE FACTORS The use of channels taken from a potentiometric model (see Fig. 1) to aid in calculating the performances of water floods of nonlinear patterns has been thoroughly explained in the literature.0,7 Therefore, very little theory, discussion, or proof regarding this phase will be repeated in this paper. The computer method presented in this paper to calculate the volumes and the shape factors of the channels of potentiometric models employs the trapezoidal rule for the volumes and the Pythagorean theorem (the hypotenuse equals the square root of the sum of the squares of the two sides of a right triangle) for the shape factors. In calculating the volume of a channel, the area of each cell in the channel is determined and then multiplied by the thickness to obtain the volume. In determining the areas of the cells, trapezoids are constructed whose vertical sides are spaced Ax apart, as shown in Fig. 2. The length of the sides is the difference between an ordinate cut off by the top and bottom of the cell — usually equipo-tentials. The coordinates of the points along an equipo-tential or streamline are obtained by Lagrange's8 equation of interpolation for which the constants are coordinate points at the intersections. THIS is a day of surpluses, some good and some not so good. One can hardly pick up a newspaper, magazine, review or economic treatise without confronting the fact that we have or are threatened with more .of certain goods than we have use for, whether it be corn, wheat, cotton, coal or oil, -lumber, 'leather, newsprint, automobiles, zinc, lead, copper or what not. How did this unprecedented state of affairs arise? Who is to blame? How shall we avoid smothering ourselves in our own production? The voice of the farmer is raised in appeal to the Government to relieve him from the dilemma of his own fertility. In answer the Government employs thousands of experts and spends millions of dollars to aid the farmer. But to what end? To make him still more efficient so that he may produce even greater surpluses? Not satisfied with the result, it spends other millions to prepare vast areas of the arid land of the West for more farmers to cultivate and insure yet larger surpluses. Then what? Naturally another appeal to the Government to fix prices by financing the
