THIS study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. INTRODUCTION When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel- exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfulls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. D R. GILLSON, who was born in Evanston, Ill., in 1895, is another one of those geologists who received his early inspiration and foundation in his science from that great teacher at Northwestern University, the late Professor U. S. Grant, and then went on to give his time and interest to Institute affairs-like those other Northwestern men, Arthur Blair, Gilbert Cady, Charlie Behre, Evan Just, Ian Campbell, Clayton Ball, and many others. After serving in the Navy in the first World War as, of all things for a geologist, a commissary officer on a transport, he went on to MIT and took his doctor's degree under Waldemar Lindgren in 1923. He even assisted in mineralogy at Harvard and thus had training under another great teacher, Charles Palache. He taught mineralogy and petrography at MIT from 1923 to 1928. After several summers of field work as an assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey, Dr. Gillson joined the staff of the du Pont company.

Thermodynamic activity rather than chemical composition is basic to the analysis of diffusion. This is the essential conclusion reached by Darken1-3 and by Birchenall and Mehl.4 If so, it is reasonable to expect that diffusion calculations should be carried out using activities. This paper will illustrate a method of employing activities in analyzing interstitial diffusion. For interstitial diffusion (of carbon in iron and probably generally) the diffusion of the solvent atoms, volume changes, and other such complexities not explicitly provided for in the usual diffusion equations cause a negligible error of the order of 1 pct. Therefore it is relatively easy to test the validity of an analysis based on activities in the instance of interstitial diffusion. The mathematical treatment of the more complex substitutional diffusion could be simplified once the adequacy of the activity method had been established for substitutional diffusion. Thus the present work has the purpose not only of providing a superior analysis of interstitial diffusion but also of indicating a possible approach to the more important question of an adequate treatment of substitutional diffusion. Development of the Diffusion Equation Although activities are convenient quantities to determine experimentally, they are derived from the more fundamental fugacities.9 Possible confusion in using activities can be avoided by basing equations involving their use on the relationship, dP = -D1d/ax dt [I] where, dP = the number of grams of solute crossing one cm2 in the time dt sec. D, = the diffusion constant for use with fugacities; it is assumed to be constant at a given temperature, and has units of secs. f = the fugacity of the solute in the solid solution; the units are those of pressure, dynes per cm2. x = the distance in cm. Eq 1 can be considered to be the basic form of the first Fick Law for one-dimensional diffusion. In order to convert Eq 1 into an equation involving activities, a choice of a standard or reference fugacity, f°, must be made: then. a = f [2] where a is the activity corresponding to the fugacity f. However, the value of a is also determined by the relation, a = a\c [3] where a is the activity coefficient and c is the concentration. For a given value of a (such as a = 1) it is evident that the units used for expressing concentration will affect the numerical value of a corresponding to a given amount of carbon dissolved in y-iron. Since weight per cent concentration is so widely used, this unit will be adopted as the standard in this paper. When the value off given by Eq 2 is substituted in Eq 1, the first Fick Law becomes, dP= -D,f°dl [4] Since D,f° is constant (at a given temperature), the second form of Fick's Law can be obtained in the usual manner, -dt D'f° dx [5] where c' is the concentration in g per cm3. In order to simplify Eq6, it is necessary to consider the standard state, f°. Standard states are chosen for convenience. There appears to be one especially convenient choice for the analysis of interstitial diffusion. If the activity coefficient, a, is set equal to unity at infinite dilution of the solute, 100 then — 100D1fl° is approximately equal P to the usual diffusion constant in dilute solutions. This is true since the activity, a, in Eq 6 can be replaced by the concentration, c, with little error in an infinitely dilute solution.* Here f1° is the standard fugacity necessary to achieve this standard state. It has been found that sulfur can be more easily removed in racunm than in hydrogen and thai this process was hindered by the prescrzce of INCLUSIONS play an essential role in the development of cube-on-edge texture in Si-Fe. Their function consists in restraining the growth of primary grains up to about 900°C and in passing subsequently into solution at higher temperatures. This process is accompanied by the selective growth of secondary grains with (110)[001] orientation. The general effect of inclusions depends on such factors as the type of impurities, their amount. dispersion and stability, the conditions of diffusion in the space of lattice of metal, and the reactions at the metal/gas interface. In recent years, some of these factors were the subject of a special investigation. A positive influence of Mns, siN,' and vN3 has been established. The quantity of impurities4 and their dispersion5 have been found to be of major importance. Attention was called to the vital importance of diffusion and the conditions under which the impurities are removed from metal., It has also been demonstrated that in Fe-Si alloys by the techniques of powder metallurgy a special opportunity exists to obtain the (110)[001] type texture. 6 The aim of this work was to conduct qualitative investigations on the influence of inclusion stability on the development of cube-on-edge texture in a metal containing approximately 3 pct Si. Experiments were carried out on cast alloys and on those manufactured by powder-metallurgy techniques. The results obtained from these experiments were utilized to explain the phenomena involved and to analyze the relationships between stable and unstable inclusions and the magnetic properties of alloys. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS The raw materials used in these experiments were the powder of carbonyl iron with the analysis (in pct) 0.044 C, 0.01 Mn, 0.005 Si, 0.009 P, 0.002 S, traces of Cu, 0.06 Ni, 0.0015 Al, 0.03 Cr, 0.02 Mo, 0.01 Ti, 0.002 Co, traces of Pb, and the powder of silicon containing 94.14 Si, 0.003 S, 0.048 C. The powders were ground and mechanically mixed in 100-g batches. and then pressed at 9 tons per sq cm into 74 by 24 by 8 mm blocks. Sintering was carried out at 1100°C for 12 hr in vacuum (2 x lo-' Tr) or in hydrogen. In this instance the material was heated slowly and subjected to prolonged soaking at 350°, 650°, and 750 2C, respectively, to secure reduction of ferro-oxides. This was checked by making measurements of the dew point, which was found to change from -15" to -35°C after reduction. The compacts after sintering were hot-rolled to 2.4 mm, annealed at 800 C, and finally cold-reduced to 0.35 mm with intermediate annealing at 800°C at a gage of about 0.8 mm. It is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1 Tammann held that the rate of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain12-8 that the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solution austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Karnop and Sachs, and others9-11 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decomposition by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect—the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.12 Other eutectoid decompositions show similar behavior: for example, the decomposition of the beta eutectoid in the copper-aluminum system, studied by Smith

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. All production in the area of the several producing wells is somewhat less than 2000 ft. and in the other area about 3800 ft. The area of the several wells is known as the Lobato field, and is practically within the city limits of Sao Salvador. The area 75 km. northwest of the city will be known as the Candeias field.

THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. The formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys containing 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct zn have been studied by the X-ray small-angle scattering method. Particular attention was paid to the effects of small amounts of third elements silver, silicon, and magnesium on the formation and growth of G.P. zones. It was noticed that an appreciable number of G.P. zones were formed during the course of rapid cooling and that the size, volume fraction, and number of these G.P. zones were influenced by the existence of the third elements. During subsequent aging it was also found that the addition of both silver and silicon lowered the temperature for the growth of G.P. zones, whereas the addition of magnesium raised it. These results were explained in terms of the mutual interactions among zinc atoms, vacancies, and the third elements. A number of studies on the formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys have been reported.1-4 Panseri and Federighii have found that the initial stages of zone growth take place at temperatures as low as around -100°C. For investigation of the mechanism of the initial stages of zone growth, growth studies must be carried out at low temperatures. In order to investigate the possibility of the formation of G.P. zones by the nucleation mechanism or the spinodal decomposition during quenching which was reported by Rundman and Hilliard,5 the examination of the as-quenched structure must be performed. In this paper the investigation of the early stages of the formation and growth were determined by means of the X-ray small-angle scattering method. With this technique, change of X-ray scattering intensities was measured while quenched specimens were heated slowly from liquid-nitrogen temperature to room temperature. At as-quenched state and after heated to room temperature, investigation of zone size, volume fraction, and zone number per unit volume was carried out. Measurements on these specimens yielded information on the early stages of zone formation and growth. Measurements were made also on specimens quenched to and aged at room temperature. From these measurements the previously reported model6 for the later stages of growth is confirmed; namely, the larger zones grow at the expense of smaller ones. Three elements, silver, silicon, and magnesium, were chosen as the third elements for the following reasons: Silver. In the binary A1-Ag alloy the spherical disordered 77' zones were observed immediately after quenching.7 Therefore, in the Al-Zn-Ag alloys, it is suggested that silver atoms might induce cluster formation during quenching. Also, since the migration energy of the zinc atoms was found to be raised by the addition of silver atoms,' silver atoms may have a great effect of the zinc diffusion, especially during low-temperature agings. Silicon. The effects of the addition of silicon atoms were found to be marked, especially at low-tempera-ture aging. In the binary Zn-Si system, no mutual solid solubilities between silicon and zinc9 and no in-termetallic compounds10 are reported to exist. Shashkov and Buynov11 investigated the behavior of silicon atoms in Al-Zn alloys and showed that silicon was not in the G.P. zones. The interaction between silicon atoms and vacancies is strong enough to increase the quenched-in vacancy concentration.* Magnesium. Magnesium atoms are reported to trap quenched-in vacancies and after much longer aging times these trapped vacancies will become free and act as diffusion carriers.13 Therefore at intermediate aging times, the diffusion of zinc atoms in Al-Zn-Mg alloys will be slower than in the binary Al-Zn alloys, whereas at longer times zinc diffusion will become faster. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation had compositions of 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct Zn with or without 0.1 and 0.5 at. pct Ag, Si, or Mg. The alloys were prepared from high-purity aluminum, zinc, silver, silicon, and magnesium, with each metal having a purity better than 99.99 pct. The analyzed composition of the specimens is given in Table I. The measurements of the X-ray small-angle scattering were carried out with foils of 0.20 mm thick. The change of the scattering intensity was always measured at the fixed scattering angle of 20 = 2/3 deg. This angle exists nearly on the position of the intensity maximum. The value of the interparticle interference function14 which has large effect in this range of angles may not change abruptly in the case of the spherical shape of small zones. Therefore, from the above considerations, it is concluded that an increase of the intensity measured at this constant angle corresponds to an increase of the average radius and volume fraction of G.P. zones. A perspective is presented of the steel plant sulphur distribution and elimination problem from coal to liquid steel ready for teeming, giving distributions of sulphur over a range of coke sulphur content, and some methods of sulphur control, in the blast furnace, external desulphuriza-tion between blast furnace and open hearth, distribution between fuel, slag, and metal, and methods and limitations of control of sulphur in the open hearth furnace. AS a part of the 1951 AIME symposium on sulphur in steelmaking, it was thought that a discussion of the distribution of sulphur throughout the whole series of operations, from coal and ore to finished steel ingots, might have some value in giving a perspective on the whole problem. The following discussion is an attempt to present such an overall picture. The order is that of the actual plant operations, beginning with a very brief consideration of the coking process. Sulphur in Coal and Coke Since by far the largest source of sulphur entering the steelmaking cycle is in the coal used to make coke for the blast furnace, it would seem reasonable to eliminate some of it, either from the coal, or the coke, or during the coking process. This has appeared impracticable up to the present, at least, for two main reasons: the low activity of the organic sulphur in either coal or coke, and because of price limitations involved in treating a low cost material such as coke. A variable portion, usually M or less, of the sulphur is present in coal in the form of pyrites or similar compounds, and a large part of this sulphur may be removed in the coal washery. Most of the sulphur, however, is normally present as "organic" sulphur, intimately associated with the coal structure. Its distribution prevents any separation by mechanical means. Its low activity makes improbable ' any rapid chemical removal, although hydrogen will remove sulphur from both coal and coke. Thus, prolonged recirculation of coke oven gas in the coking process would tend to leave a smaller percentage of the total sulphur in the coke residue. Table I shows a typical distribution of sulphur from coal into products in the coking process. As the sulphur in the coal increases, the sulphur in the coke tends to increase in about the same proportion. Sulphur in the Blast Furnace The best picture of the situation in the blast furnace is provided by a sulphur balance of raw materials entering, and of products leaving, the furnace. The difficulties in accurate weighing and sampling of the variable solid materials entering this process, and the number of hours required for the raw materials to descend through the furnace under variable operating conditions, make it difficult to obtain an accurate balance. However, balances made over periods of weeks or months tend to average out some of these uncertainties. Table I1 presents three typical sulphur balances similar to a number that the writers have calculated. In most of these the slag volume calculated from the sulphur balance is, in some instances more, and in other instances less, than the value corresponding to the best input and output balances of the other slag constituents (lime, silica, alumina, etc.). Probably the greatest source of error in these calculations is the sulphur content of the slag. Despite some possible inaccuracies the balances of Table II show rather definitely the following points: 1—That 87 to 95 pct of the total sulphur input is in the coke and 95 to 97 pct of the total sulphur output is in the slag. Also, that if any sulphur leaves the furnace with the gas it is relatively small, amounting to a possible 1 pct or less. 2—At the lower sulphur coke level of 0.86 pct the total amount of sulphur charged is 15 Ib of sulphur per ton iron increasing to 26 lb per ton at the higher sulphur, intimately associated with the coal struc-rare burdens containing sulphur-rich ores will the total sulphur burden fail to be nearly proportional to the content in the coke used. 3—The 7 to 9 pct of the total sulphur input from the limestone of furnaces B and C is due to the relatively high sulphur content of the stone, 0.226 and 0.265 pct, respectively. In the case of furnace A, the sulphur content of the limestone was only 0.06 pct which resulted in only 3 pct of the total sulphur input coming from this source. The natural effect of large ingot-size should be to increase segregation. I have previously pointed1 to the excessive segregation in many large ingots as tending to confirm this, but I have shown that in case of ingots less than 16 in. square this expected effect of ingot-size is liable to masked by that of Note.—The "maximum enrichment" of each ingot, i.e., the excess of the richest spot over the average of the whole ingot, is first calculated in percentage of that average. IT is a well-known fact that martensitic steels show a greater resistance to brittle fracture than do pearlitic and bainitic steels. It was, therefore, thought worthwhile to investigate the mode of brittle fracture with respect to structure by studying the effect of various austenite decomposition products on the propagation of brittle fracture in steel by means of electron microscopy. Newly developed replication techniques together with the advantages of the electron microscope such as great depth of field, available high magnification and easy adaptation to stereophotography make electron microscopy very suitable for fracture studies. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An essentially plain carbon steel containing 0.56 pct C, 1.30 pct Mn, 0.02 pct P, 0.03 pct S and 0.22 pct Si was used in this investigation. The following table gives the heat treatments used to obtain the various austenite decomposition products: The resulting austenite grain size from the 870°C austenitization treatment was about an ASTM No. 7 grain size. The specimens which were 2 in. long, 1/4-in. diam bars were austenitized in a tube furnace through which argon gas was blown. The tube was not, however, air-free and the specimens were not completely oxide-free. Isothermal treatments were done in a lead bath. With the exception of the fully hardened specimen and the one as-isothermally transformed at 300°C the heat treated specimens were notched in the following fashion with a jeweler's saw. A cut about 0.08 in. deep was made perpendicular to the length of the bar. The specimen then was rotated about 45 deg and another cut about 0.08 in. deep was made. In the case of the hard martensitic and bainitic specimens, only one cut was made and the depth was not controlled. The design of the two-cut notch caused fracture to initiate at the point of intersection of the two saw cuts. The specimens were broken at -196°C in a Charpy impact testing machine. In order to hold the specimens securely in the impact machine two square pieces of mild steel were made about 5/8 in. long having the same cross section as that of a standard Charpy specimen but containing a hole 1/4 in. diam through the center of the cross-section. These adapters were slipped over the ends of the test specimen which was then secured tightly by means of set screws in the adapters. The specimen with the adapters was cooled to -196°C in liquid N,, then placed in the impact machine and broken within 3 sec. One half of the broken specimen was used for the electron microscope study of the actual fracture surface. The other half was nickel-plated and a cross section through the notch and fracture was polished for electron microscope examination. Carbon replicas of the fracture specimens for the electron microscope study were made essentially according to Bradley's evaporation technique.' Both direct carbon and two-stage carbon replication techniques were used. In the case of the direct carbon technique, a thin layer of carbon was evaporated first at an angle of about 45 deg to the mean fracture surface and then another film of carbon was evaporated normally to the fracture surface. The carbon replica was freed electrolytically.2 The specimen was made an anode in a 10 pct Nital polishing solution. It was etched intermittently by shutting off the power now and then. The freed replica was washed in 40 to 50 pct water solution of nitric acid for 10 min or so, then washed in water and picked up on a screen for examination. The two-stage carbon replication technique involved first making a primary replica of cellulose * acetate from which a carbon replica was then made. One side of a strip of cellulose acetate wet with acetone was pressed lightly against the surface of the specimen, allowed to dry and then stripped. Prior to the deposition of carbon, which was done at 90 deg to the cellulose acetate replica surface, chromium was evaporated at 45 deg. After the carbon evaporation the cellulose acetate was dissolved in acetone according to the Jaffe method3 leaving the carbon replica preshadowed with chromium for examination.

There is apparently no end to the doubts, inconsistencies and absurdities in which the courts of our mining States and Territories are involved in their attempts to apply to conditions of ever-increasing complexity the provisions of our anomalous mining law. In previous papers, I have called this statute " the law of the apex," because it based upon that vague, novel and mysterious condition the most important grant of title. But the apex is scarcely a more essential feature than the end-lines and the side-lines; for the rights which it may confer may be limited in various ways by these; so that we have, in many a case, the most ridiculous result that the United States, in return for the money of a citizen, conveys to him with much solemnity, under its broad seal, nobody knows what, bounded nobody can tell how. A decision recently made at Butte by Judge De Wolfe, of the United States District Court of Montana, in the case of King et al. vs. The Amy and Silversmith Mining Company, furnishes a fresh illustration of this criticism. The effect of reducing oxygen to low concentrations on the fracture of high-purity iron single crystals has been examined at 78° and 20°K. It is found that iron single crystals grown by the strain-anneal method usually contain a few occluded grain boundaries which may become embittled in the presence of oxygen, thereby nucleating cleavage fractures. High purity with respect to interstitial elements was found to inhibit twinning and evidence is presented for an orientation dependence of the resolved yield stress. Deformation occurred by slip rather than twinning at both temperatures of testing with elongations of as much as 9 pct at 20°K. THE fracture properties of iron single crystals have been observedl-3 to be a function of temperature, orientation, and purity. Allen, Hopkins, and McLennan1 demonstrated that at 78°K iron single crystals became increasingly brittle as the tensile axis approached the (001) pole of the stereographic unit triangle. Iron crystals with the tension axis near a (001) pole were completely brittle and orientations near the (011)-(111) boundary were very ductile, achieving a 100 pct reduction in area prior to fracture. Later work of Biggs and pratt2 and of Edmondson3 demonstrated that by reducing the carbon content of the single crystals the transition between brittle and ductile failure at 78°K could be shifted to orientations nearer the (001) pole. Ed-mondson went further and pointed out that any mechanism which tended to increase the yield strength of the iron (i.e., carbon addition, pre-strain) also increased the tendency for brittle behavior at 78°K. Thus by a reduction of carbon content Biggs and Pratt were able to obtain ductile behavior to within 20 deg of the (001) pole, and Ed-mondson was able to obtain ductile behavior to within 26 deg of the (001) pole. Edmondson's material had a total interstitial content (carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen) of approximately 60 ppm and, although Biggs and Pratt reported no analysis, indications were that their iron contained comparable impurities. Stein, Low, and seybolt4 purified iron single crystals to a total carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen content of approximately 20 ppm. They observed a lowering of the yield stress with this increased purity, and thus one might have expected an observation of increased ductility. Although they tested specimens of orientations which the previous workers had indicated should be ductile, the crystals failed at a 78°K in a brittle manner with little elongation. Stein noted,' however, that about 90 pet of the failures could be traced in origin to occluded grains. Allen et al.1 and Edmondson3 do not report examination of their cleavage surfaces, but Biggs and pratt2 reported that microscopic examination of the cleavage surfaces of many of their specimens revealed the presence of small occluded grains. Honda and cohen6 and Keh7 have also observed the initiation of fracture at occluded grains in iron single crystals. Therefore, the additional complication of occluded grains must be considered in studying the properties of iron single crystals and the origin of fractures determined if the ductility exhibited by the crystals is to be considered meaningful. Various investigators8-12 have studied the effects of impurities on grain boundaries in high-purity polycrystalline iron. Rees and Hopkins10 showed that the addition of oxygen to low-carbon (0.002 pet) iron weakened the grain boundaries, causing a shift from transcrystalline to intercrystalline fracture and a progressive decrease on the brittle-fracture stress with increasing oxygen content. In addition, it has been shown by Low and Feustel11 that the addition of carbon to polycrystalline iron containing oxygen eliminated grain boundary brittleness. Thus, oxygen can embrittle grain boundaries in high-purity polycrystalline iron, but the addition of an appropriate amount of carbon can eliminate the oxygen-induced brittleness. The oxygen content (19 ppm) of the iron "single crystals" employed by Stein el al. was large enough to suspect impurity effects at the occluded grain boundaries. Allen et al.1 Biggs and pratt,2 and Edmondson3 may have masked any occluded grain problem in their specimens considering the relatively high carbon levels they employed. stein13 demonstrated that the addition of as little as 0.9 ppm C to previously purified (less than 5 x 10-3 ppm C) "single crystals" would increase the elongation from a few percent to more than 20 pet at 78°K and the fracture was not associated with grade boundary initiation.

Equilibrium studies on the extraction of nickel and cobalt with kerosine solutions of naphthenic acid have shown that an exchange extraction reaction occurs at pH 5.5. The nickel/cobalt separation factor is constant at 1.8 for constant total metal molarity and varying nickel/cobalt ratios. The separation factor decreases with increasing total metal molarity in the organic phase beyond 0.2 M and also decreases with increasing temperature. From the equilibrium data, it has been possible to derive a mathematical model for the separation of nickel from cobalt by exchange extraction in multistage systems. Experimental data from a continuously operated multistage mixer/settler apparatus has shown a reasonable correspondence with computer-calculated data. The effective separation of nickel and cobalt in sulfate solution remains a problem in hydrometallurgy and the hope that this would be solved by solvent extraction has not yet been fulfilled. With chloride solutions, advantage may be taken of the ability of cobalt to form anionic complexes with the chloride ion. It can then be readily separated from nickel, which does not form stable chloro complexes, by extraction with a suitable long chain amine. However, in hydro metallurgical operations, sulfate solutions are generally obtained in which no extractable anionic species are present. Thus, the possibility of using cationic extractants must be considered, and in this paper attention is directed to the use of carboxylic acids. The method of separation studied has been termed exchange extraction, which involves replacement of a metal in the organic phase with a more acidic metal in the aqueous phase. Thus, (BR2).+ (Az+)aqt=(AR,).+ (B2+)aq (I) where metal A is more acidic than metal B, R represents the acidic radical derived from the acid RH, and the subscripts e and aq refer to the organic and aqueous phases, respectively. Ashbrook and Ritcey' have used this method for the separation of cobalt from nickel using the sodium salt of di-2 ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid, which preferentially extracts cobalt. Some nickel is coextracted, and this is removed by exchange with cobalt ions in the feed solution by suitable countercurrent operation in a pulsed column. Much work has been carried out by a number of workers in Russia on the general use of exchange extraction for the separation of metal ions using car-boxylic acids. Gindin et aL a have demonstrated that this technique could be applied to the separation of nickel from cobalt using a C--C. carboxylic acid and have applied the technique to the production of high purity cobalt solutions for electrolysis. Further worka was concerned with the development of a process for the separation of nickel from cobalt in a pulsed column. This system permitted the separation of iron and copper from nickel and cobalt in one system. The procedure involved center feeding with acid backwashing at the top and alkali addition lower down the column. Thus the system operated under a pH gradient and the metals were distributed in the column in the order of their basicities. A similar application was studied by Gel'perin et al,4,5 for the removal of copper and iron impurities from a nickel anolyte by means of a C10-C,12 fatty acid fraction. Ginden et al,' and Fletcher and Wilson' have studied the effect of pH on the extraction of a number of metals with carboxylic acids. These studies showed that metals such as iron, copper, lead, zinc, nickel cobalt, and manganese are extracted at pH values close to the pH of hydroxide precipitation. Nickel is extracted at a slightly lower pH than cobalt and thus the nickel/cobalt separation factor has a value not much greater than 1. More basic work on complex identification has been reported by Fletcher and Flett: by Tanaka; and Jay-cock and Jones." These studies have suggested that at low loadings in the organic phase, the nickel and cobalt carboxylates appear to be dimeric and solvated by free carboxylic acid molecules. As the concentration of metal in the organic phase increases, the complex changes and larger polymeric species are formed. The adaptation of European methods of concentrating ores to suit the conditions of this country has followed the lines that simplify machinery, diminish labor and increase capacity. Noteworthy instances are the substitution of hydraulic classifiers for the last one or two trommels in the series, and the substitution of a distributing-tank for the slimes in the place of the Spitzkasten. The question may be fairly asked, At what point do losses become serious in consequence of these changes? It is to study this question that the investigation herein described has been undertaken. After the losses are located and the methods of stopping them are pointed out, it will then lie with the individual mill to decide whether or not the plans proposed will save suficient value to warrant their adoption. In the discussion of sorting followed by sizing, as the terms are used in this paper, me have to deal with the preparation of slimes by the Spitzkasten for subsequent washing upon the slime-table. The Spitzkasten, or pointed box, is an inverted hollow pyramid, generally of wood, usually with four faces or sides coming together in a point below. The sides can have, according to Rittinger, a minimum angle of slope of 50" with the horizontal. The feed-water carrying fine slimes (less than 0.01 inch, or 0.25 mm. in diameter) for treatment is fed at one end and carefully distributed over the whole width. The outlet is over the opposite end.
