THE Sparrows Point plant of Bethlehem Steel Co., southeast of Baltimore, is the largest Bethlehem plant, with an annual rated capacity of 6.2 million ingot tons. There is considerable diversity of product, but a high percentage is sheet, tin plate, galvanized sheets, and rod and wire. The large amount of light-weight end product requires a number of pickling installations that necessarily consume large quantities of sulfuric acid. In the coking operations sulfuric acid is also consumed in recovery of ammonia as ammonium sulfate and in treatment of recovered light oil derivatives. Total sulfuric acid consumption in the plant is currently approaching 10,000 tons per month, of which 55 to 60 pct is required for pickling. In 1951 the acute sulfur shortage caused grave concern as to future sulfuric acid supply for the Sparrows Point plant. Raw materials for acid making were already at hand in the form of hydrogen sulfide and pyrites sufficient to produce nearly half the sulfuric acid required at that time. It was also known that the Bethlehem mining activities would produce additional pyrites in the future. Late in 1951 Bethlehem management decided to build a 250-ton sulfuric acid plant at Sparrows Point to utilize these raw materials. The plant was built and put in operation in May 1953. The steel plant has expanded considerably since 1951, and it is now necessary to operate the acid plant far over rated capacity in order to supply plant demand. Production of acid in 1954 amounted to 93,000 tons. Raw Materials for Acid Making: Coking operations at Sparrows Point produce a residual fuel gas in large quantity which has a net heating value of 525 to 545 Btu. A mathetnatical model of heal transfer in continuously cast steel slabs is described. The model, consisting of a unidimensional transient conduction equation and boundary condition equations, has been pvogrammed for computer solution. Temperatuve and solidification profiles calculated for a 6-in. slab, being cast under several conditions of secondary cooling, are presented and compared. Calculated solidification profiles are in agreement with reported expevinle~ztal values. For the mold zone, the predicted slab shell thickness can be described by: Resuilts of the study indicate that multibank spray cooling followed by radiant cooling should be employed when solidifying thick slabs with minimum surface temperature of 1600°F. Under these conditions, a 6-in. slab can be expected to solidify in about 8.3 min. Computer results also indicate that radiant cooling can replace spray cooling during solidification of the final 30 pct of slab with little increase in overall solidification time. CONTINUOUS casting has come to the forefront of the steel industry in recent years because of economic advantages resulting from increased yields and elimination of several processing steps. Considerable work, however, remains to be done regarding modifications to the process and operating procedures. Both a lack of operating plants in this country and the experimental difficulties associated with direct measurements on moving castings have made determination of solidification rates and temperature distributions difficult. An alternate approach is to mathematically simulate heat transfer in a continuously cast section, and then calculate the temperature distributions as a function of the controllable variables of the process. Simulation of heat transfer during solidification requires that a nonlinear mathematical problem be solved. As pointed out by Ruddle,' there are two mathematical approaches to the problem- the analytical approach and the numerical approach. While the analytical approach is certainly the more elegant of the two, it does require a number of inexact assumptions because of the complexity of the problem. For example, noteworthy analytical treatments of heat transfer in continuous casting have been developed by Savage Hills,3 and pehlke4 only by making one or more simplifying assumptions such as invariant thermophysical properties, constant heat-transfer coefficients in the mold, and linear temperature profiles in the shell. Simplifying assumptions such as these can introduce considerable uncertainty in the validity of results calculated with analytical solutions. Numerical solutions, which are considerably more versatile, appear to be better suited for solving solidification problems. Complex variations in the boundary conditions and variable thermophysical properties can be handled readily with this technique. Whereas numerical computations can be long and tedious when done by hand, results can now be obtained quite rapidly with the use of either the digital or analog computer. Several numerical models of heat transfer in continuous casting have been published. In 1963, Adenis, Coats, and Ragones published a numerical model used to calculate temperature distributions in direct-chill-cast magnesium billets. More recently, Donaldson and Hess 6 presented results obtained with a numerical computer model of heat transfer in continuously cast steel billets. In the present study, a model of unidimensional heat transfer in continuously cast slabs is presented. The method of solution on a digital computer is also included. Calculated temperature distributions and solidification profiles for various schemes of secondary cooling along with attempts to verify the model are also discussed. MATHEMATICAL MODEL The schematic representation of the slab continuous casting process in Fig. 1 illustrates that the slab passes through three distinct zones of cooling. Accordingly, the mathematical model consists of three parts: 1) solidification in the mold; 2) solidification in the spray cooling zone ; 3) solidification in the radiant cooling zone. Heat-Transfer Equations. The model was developed bymaking a heat balance on a horizontal slice of slab over the time period required for the slice to proceed from the liquid metal meniscus in the mold to the cutoff station. As shown in Fig. 2, the imaginary slice extends from the center line to the surface of the slab. As the slice moves downward, heat is conducted from the center line to the surface of the slab at a rate governed by the surface boundary condition and thermophysical properties of the metal in the slice. ONE of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.1 During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time required for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error.2~3 This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the KACA.4 By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, 100, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time for rupture on stress, temperature, com- position, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the KACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given com- position and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efficiency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. THEORY The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 eveloped by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate- process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. This smallest subdivision is called the "unit process.'' For example, in a chemical reaction the unit process is

We have seen that the first coal development in Pennsylvania was in the Pittsburgh bed in the southwestern corner of the state. The next mining, in point of time, was done in Clearfield County along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, but the amount of mining done was quite small for a number of years and was soon exceeded by that from the area north of the Susquehanna River in Tioga, Bradford and Lycoming Counties, which will be considered now. It is claimed that coal was first noticed in Tioga County, in 1792, by Robert and Benjamin Patterson who were leading a party of settlers from Williamsport to southern New York, and while clearing a road near the site of Blossburg, found coal, which was said to be good. About 1815 David Clemons made an arrangement with Aaron Bloss, owner of the land, to work some of the coal and hauled the first load down the river to Painted Post, N. Y., as there were no available markets in his own state. Smiths found it an excellent fuel and apparently he found a ready market for the small amount he could transport by wagons and sleighs. As wood began to become scarce around the towns in New York State, the knowledge of the coal deposits in the mountains at the head of the Tioga River attracted attention to the field and the necessity, for means of transportation from it. Some coal had been floated down the river, but navigation was uncertain and dangerous. In 1827 an iron plant was built, and to ship its product and coal, it was proposed to build a canal along the river to reach Corning, N. Y. A company had been chartered in 1826 in Pennsylvania to "make a navigable canal or slack-water navigation" to the state line and coal was shipped on rafts of logs, both being sold, during highwater. In 1828 the company was authorized to build a railroad instead of a canal, and in September 1840, the railroad was completed from Corning to Blossburg.1 That some coal from Pennsylvania had been reaching southern New York towns prior to the improved means of transport is shown by the report of a committee to the New York Assembly: "the bituminous coal has been brought to us either from Great Britain or from that part of our own country which borders on, and lies west and south of the Susquehan-

The steady state shape of a shrinking cylindrical grain boundary of miform boundary energy is shown to be circular. This is based on the principle of either the minimum rate of entropy production or the minimum thermokinetic potential. The circular shape corresponds also to a state of minimum (not maximum) velocity. The steady state shape of a grain boundary moving between two inclined surfaces is a circular cylindrical arc whose position and curvature will be afjected by the nature of the surfaces. The minimum thermokinetic potential is the only valid criterion in this case. THE preceding paper1 reports an interesting experiment in which it is shown that a grain boundary moving between two inclined surfaces assumes a circular cylindrical arc whose axis nearly coincides with the line of intersection of the two surfaces. The driving force is well defined since it is the energy of the grain boundary itself. The velocity of the grain boundary is found not to vary linearly with the driving force. Several interesting questions arise: 1) What principle determines the shape of a moving grain boundary? 2) What is the effect of the inclined surfaces? 3) How do we understand the nonlinear velocity-driving force relationship? It is attempted in this paper to discuss the first two questions based on irreversible thermodynamics and in a following paper to discuss the third question based on dislocation theory. STEADY STATE SHAPE OF A SHRINKING LOOP (A CYLINDRICAL GRAIN BOUNDARY) In irreversible thermodynamics, there are two criteria for the steady state. One is the minimum rate of entropy production2 which is based on the symmetry of phenomenological coefficients and is applicable to linear force-flux relations with constant coefficients. The other is the minimum thermokinetic potential3 which is based on the integrability of a certain Pfaffian differential equation and is applicable to nonlinear systems with variable coefficients. In the case of a shrinking grain boundary loop (a two dimensional version of a cylindrical grain), the flux of atoms across the grain boundary can be taken as the local boundary velocity v measured perpendicular to the boundary (the number of atoms transferred per unit area per second is equal to the product of atom density and the velocity of the boundary). The local thermodynamic driving force can be taken as y/p with y being the grain boundary energy (invariant with respect to the orientation and curvature of the grain boundary) and p being the radius of curvature. Such driving force can be understood by considering the loop as an elastic string with tension y. As shown in Fig. 1, across a length ds along the loop, the direction of y changes by an angle d@ which is ds/p. Because of this change of direction, the tension exerts a force perpendicular to the curve equal to yd@. The force per unit length is then y/p. According to the experimental observation, the velocity v is a power function of y/p, where M is the velocity at unit driving force and 'n is a constant. The rate of entropy production per ds along the loop is vyds/pT, where T is the temperature. For a given length L of the loop, the total rate of entropy production is The thermokinetic ptentia13 has only a differential definition and its existence depends on the integrability of this definition. In this case, Eq. [3] happens to be a total differential and the thermokinetic potential can be defined as which turns out to be the same as the rate of entropy production, Eq. [2], except for a constant factor n + 1. Strictly speaking, since the flux-force relation is not linear, the rate of entropy production may not be a minimum at the steady state. However, because of the proportionality between Eqs. [2] and 141, the state of minimum thermokinetic potential happens to be the same as that of minimum rate of entropy production. The steady state shape thus can be obtained by minimizing either integral [2] or [4] for a given L.

TRANSPORTATION is one of the most important problems of the mine operator and the possibilities of cost reduction in this field should not be overlooked. In the railroad industry, cars and locomotives have been improved greatly, and the progress there made is well worthy of study by the mine operator looking for maximum efficiency in every branch of his activities. One of the outstanding developments in the construction of railroad equipment in recent years has been the wide-spread adoption of large one-piece steel castings for the framework of locomotives, passenger and freight cars. Some of the advantages and applications of this type of construction will be outlined in this paper, with particular thought of the needs of the mining industry. The inherent qualities of cast steel: homogeneity, unrestricted size and shape, high tensile strength, flexibility of metal distribution, resistance to corrosion, and gracefulness of outline, make it the most versatile member of the ferrous group. Not only is it a strength-giving element, but it is corrosion resistant, a combination that makes for large economies in equipment maintenance. Flexibility of metal distribution allows the integral foundation to be in the shape best suited for the purpose. These cast structures are really assembled in the mold in liquid form and the metal can be placed in the right pro¬portion exactly where it is needed, thus securing weight economy and uniformity of fibre stress. Such a process permits the incorporation, with ease, of necessary brackets, utilizing them to provide not only greater strength for the derail part itself, but often to add to the value of the entire unit. Laps, seams, and joints, which are necessary in all fabricated forms, are eliminated.

Vapor-deposited nickel films in the thickness range 700 to 4360A were tested in uniaxial tension utilizing a microtester designed specifically for this study. Contrary to the findings of some investigators, a definite thickness-strength relationship was observed below 3000 A with a four-to sevenfold increase in strength over that of bulk nickel. The films were characterized by high elastic strains and little plasticity. On the basis of these and other reported data, it is suggested that the high strength level in metal films is related to the manner in which they are produced. Vapor deposition, owing to its severe quenching effect. is believed to promote the formation of point defects which inhibit dislocation movement. IN recent years it has been reported that metals, when in the form of thin films, exhibit extraordinarily high strengths. The data published to date have been primarily concerned with silver and gold because of the ease with which these metals can be vapor-deposited and their high resistance to surface oxidation. Previous investigations into the mechanical strength of thin films has uncovered an apparent dichotomy of view on film behavior. Beams and his co-workers have reported a definite dependence of strength on film thickness. Other workers,"-'6 however, in separate studies on the strength of poly crystalline and single-crystal films have found no such thickness-strength relationship. The study of thin-film strength is extremely difficult because of the many variables associated with film preparation, handling, and testing. Moreover, the manner of test employed by different investigators has varied quite radically, ranging from simple uniaxial-tension to biaxial-bulge testing. The work reported herein was conducted in order to determine the mechanical behavior of a structural metal when in the form of a vacuum-deposited thin film and to gain some insight into the reasons for the high strengths exhibited by metals having such a con- figuration. In this study a method of test was chosen which would yield results which are easily interpreted and lend themselves to comparison with properties of the same material in bulk form. Moreover, specimen-preparation parameters and film-handling techniques are set forth so that other investigators can properly compare their findings with ours. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Film Preparation. Vacuum deposition was performed in an 18 by 30 in. bell jar using a standard New York Air Brake Co. vacuum station with a 6-in. oil-diffusion pump. Before evaporation the system was pumped to a pressure of less than 2 x 10"5 torr. A shield was employed to protect the substrates from the emission of contaminants during the critical melting and outgassing of the evaporant. The source consisted of from one to six filaments (0.020 in. diam). The length of each filament was about 5 in. and was placed 6 to 8 1/2 in. from the substrate in such a manner that the substrate face was at 90 deg incidence with respect to the evaporant beam. The temperature of the source was 2000"~ during evaporation. The films were deposited onto a substrate arrangement which was composed of four basic components, that is: 1) a 3 by 1 in. glass slide; 2) a 22-mm sq micro cover glass on 1); 3) a 22 by 50 mm micro cover glass coated with collodion on 1); and 4) a stainless-steel sheet mask containing twelve rectangular openings of 1-mm and 2-mm widths and lengths of 5 mm laid over 3). Thus, test specimens of 1-mm and 2-mm widths are deposited onto a collodion substrate which precludes epitaxial effects in the specirnens. 17-le The rectangular cover glass and square cover glass were positioned in such a manner that a strip of film would be evaporated along the length and across the width of the large glass slide. This boundary of evaporated film was used to determine the film thickness by multiple-beam interferometry. The square cover glass was used for X-ray and chemical analyses. Thickness of the deposits was varied by changing the number of filaments used (one to six). The duration of evaporation was 30 sec for each filamgnt which resulted in a deposition rate of 8 to 20A per sec. Evaporations were all performed at room temperature; however, radiant heat from the source raised the substrate temperature to 40" to 60°C. All substrates were cleaned by ultrasonic agitation in a solution of spectranalyzed isopropyl alcohol. The conventional short-time tensile test provides a reliable means of predicting the sustained load-carrying capacity of steels only when the temperature is such that continuous plastic flow does not occur. At elevated temperatures, stresses considerably less than the short-time rupture value may produce continuous flow, with fracture occurring only after long periods of time. The amount of flow or creep accompanying failure varies for different steels, and depends, to a large extent, on the temperature and the duration of the test. Service records of cracking stills, steam superheaters and high-temperature boilers have shown that brittle fractures sometimes occur with little or no warning. In installations of this type, localized stresses are often encountered, and steels must be capable of withstanding a certain amount of deformation without fracture. The sustained-load rupture test determines the expected life and corresponding ductility of steels at various stresses and temperatures. It also yields additional information regarding the effect of micro-structure and metallurgical stability on the high-temperature properties. Present Status of Sustained-load Rupture Test The sustained-load rupture test conducted at elevated temperatures is not entirely new. Dr. Zay Jeffriesl presented in 1919 the results of a large number of rupture tests made on copper, iron and tungsten. These tests were made with various strain rates and at temperatures ranging from the boiling point of liquid air to 1000° C. At that time he observed the interesting phenomenon characteristic of metals, that a temperature exists below which a metal is ductile and breaks with a transcrystalline fracture (through the grain) and above which the metal is brittle and breaks with an intergranular fracture (through the grain boundaries). He observed that this temperature varied with the testing speed, and that a minimum temperature, slightly above the recrystallization temperature, existed at which the cohesion of the grains themselves was

THOUGH the flotation of gold ores has come into the lime- light largely in recent years, it is not a product of recent economic conditions but rather as old as flotation itself. It could hardly be other- wise, since gold, when in the right state of comminution and surface condition, is one of the more readily floated of minerals. In early practice it was not generally recognized that gold was floated as well; it was - thought that the gold was bound up with sulphide minerals that floated, but now we know that free gold must have been floated as well.

WHEN geophysical methods were first employed in the search for ore deposits and oil accumulations, it was hoped that they would provide a direct means of locating such concentrations. Magnetized needles were used long ago in prospecting for magnetic iron ore, and soon after the discovery of galvanism in about 1790 attempts were made to find concentrations of valuable minerals electrically. Evidence indicating that the early geophyeical instruments were regarded merely as improved divining or dowsing rods is to be seen in the names "mineral finders," "ore finders," etc., that were applied to them. Today, appellations of this kind raise serious doubts in informed minds as to the intelligence and integrity of individuals advocating the use of such euphemistically named methods or instruments, for experience and research have shown that, geophysical, it is never a question of directly locating a given mineral but merely of delimiting its possible occurrence.

THE gas-liquid metal diffusion cell technique1-3 has been used to study the diffusion of nitrogen in Fe-C alloys. The actual apparatus and technique were the same as employed by the authors to study the diffusion of hydrogen in liquid iron.' The diffusion cell' was formed by immersing an alumina tube in a stagnant melt contained in an alumina crucible. The tube (hereafter called absorption tube) contained nitrogen gas at 1 atm and was connected to a sensitive gas-measuring system. The change in the average concentration of nitrogen in the melt in the absorption tube was determined by measuring the rate of absorption of nitrogen in the diffusion cell. Eq. [I], 1-3 derived from the appropriate solution of Fick's second law, was used to examine the data and to calculate chemical diffusion coefficients (D) in situations where the absorption appeared to be controlled by diffusion in the liquid: where V is the stp volume in cu cm, d is the diffusion cell diameter in cm, p, is the density of the melt in g per cu cm, pg is the stp density of nitrogen in g per cu cm, C, is expressed in wt pct, D is in sq cm per sec, and t is in min. According to Eq. [I], a plot of v vs vt should yield a straight line passing through the origin if absorption is controlled by diffusion in the liquid. The slope of this line could be used to determine the value of D under appropriate conditions. As discussed in earlier reports,1,2 the initial thermal expansion of the gas upon immersing the absorption tube distorts the line in the initial stages of a diffusion experiment. However, this is not a serious problem since the slope of V vs 6 plots can be determined from the data points obtained after the initial expansion ceases. The volumes reported on the data plot presented here represent absorption after this thermal expansion ceased. Several preliminary diffusion experiments were attempted with melts of pure iron and with Fe-C alloys containing up to 0.6 pct C. In these cases, no or very little absorption was observed. The only data obtained were for an Fe-C melt which was in addition thoroughly deoxidized by successive hydrogen and vacuum-degassing treatments. These treatments introduced an appreciable amount of aluminum into the melt and reduced its omgen content. The original charge material for this melt contained 0.23 pct s and approximately 0.001 pct &. After repeated hydrogen and vacuum-degassing treatments two diffusion experiments were performed. THE present administration has made sincere and effective efforts to reduce the expense of the Federal Government, but it has reached a point beyond which it seems impossible, or anyway extraordi-narily difficult, to go. This is ascribable to the large part of the budget that is represented as war expense. There is no doubt that this spells high taxation for many years to come. Nevertheless, although a large part of the taxation will be attributable to the war, the paying out of the proceeds of that taxation by the government will not be war expense, except in minor part, as will be hereinafter made clear. It will be useful to explain the economic meaning of this situation, for it has bear-ings upon several open questions, such as a bonus to the ex-soldiers, the foreign debt accounts, etc. The expense of the war on the part of the American people was in the main paid concurrently with its prose-cution. This was necessary. Warfare is not conducted with money, but with materials and labor. Except for such previous production as was represented by stocks of goods, the requirements had to be supplied by coincident production. With the end of 1918 our war expense ceased, save for such production, e.g., of ships, that was allowed to run on unchecked, and the indemnities that had to be paid for cancelled contracts. When those matters have been settled we shall be done, barring one important thing. Of course, our war expense began to contract right after the armistice and shrunk rapidly with the demobilization of the troops in 1919. If we had not been able to obtain all needful material from our own sources and had been constrained to borrow it from foreign countries, incurring a foreign debt, we should have been in the quite different posi-tion of having to repay that material, or its equivalent, during subsequent years. The European countries had to come to us for such supplies. This outlines the fundamental difference between their present situations and ours. We were therefore compelled not only to furnish materials and man-power for our own warfare but also much for the Allies.

THE mine here described is in the Witbank district, a coal area of the Transvaal, about 100 miles north- east of Johannesburg. and is owned by the Witbank Colliery, Ltd. The plant has a capacity of 4000 tons per eight hours, and prepares five sizes of coal. The coal seam lies at a depth of about 200 ft. below the surface, and is reached by an inclined shaft sunk at an angle of 18° with the horizontal. Although the thickness of the coal seam varies from 10 to 14 ft. or more, only about a 7-ft. bench is mined. Mining is by the hord and pillar system. Bords are driven 18 ft. wide, with pillars measuring 18 ft. square. The mine is laid out into four sections, each sewed by a main haulage way from the shaft. Arc-wall machines are used for cutting the coal. but all loading is done by hand. Native labor is employed under the supervision of white miners, who do the required blasting. The workings are practically free from gas and water, and very little timber is needed.

Cb 3 Sn powders were hot-pressed to estahlish densi-fication conditions and assess the possible use of such compacts in multiphase structures with ceramic or magnetic inclusions. Superconducting transition temperatures, Tc, were measured as a function of powder particle size, pressing temperature, and second-phase admixtures. The highest transition temperatures were found in coarse powder (5 to 500 u) compacts and were only weakly depended on pressing temperatures up to 1200°C. Fine powders (below 5 p), however, both single-phase CbsSn and Cb3 Sn-composites, showed a stronger dependence on hot-pressing temperatures. While Al2 O3 phase admixtures did not affect T, much more, a Pronounced T, degradation was observed upon the addition of ferrimagnetic Fe2 Mno. 5 Zno.5 O4 powders. Likewise, critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2° K were lowered appreciably in the ferrite doped samples, whereas the neutral A1203 inclusiow gave slightly improved Jc values. MULTIPHASE structures in electronically active materials have recently gained in interest as pointed out by Galasso in a review article.' In superconductors the most widely reported group are eutectic alloys which have been mostly investigated with respect to the proximity effect.2"4 In addition, "artificial eu-tectics", for example in the form of mercury-vycor glass sponge5 or fine niobium wires imbedded in a copper matrix,= have been prepared to attain higher critical fields and critical current densities. The idea was to enhance flux pinning phenomena by second-phase inclusions or ho1es. 7 Flux pinning should also be possible by the introduction of insulator inclusions into a superconducting matrix. Ceramic-metal combinations are most easily produced by hot pressing (= pressure sintering), as it permits an almost unlimited selection of material combinations. Cb 3 Sn has been prepared by vapor phase growths or in the form of thin films. Large compacts must be sintered,1° however, and normally present difficulties. At temperatures below 1350°C insufficient densities are obtained and at higher temperatures the loss of tin due to dissociation upsets the stoichiometry. Hot pressing is a natural approach to circumvent the problems, since one can obtain satisfactory densities despite low sintering temperatures. This work was mostly concerned with establishing conditions to hot press Cb3 Sn and Cb3 Sn multiphase structures (= composites), because no data are presently available, and to evaluate these with respect to their transition temperatures. However, a few measurements on critical current densities were also carried out, in particular to assess the value of ferrimagnetic inclusions. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure involved the preparation of feed material and powders, hot pressing, and evaluation of the resulting ingots. As no attempts were made to synthesize Cb3Sn from the elements during hot pressing, feed material had to be produced. For this purpose, a stoichiometric Cb-Sn powder mixture was compacted into a 3-cm-diam ingot (80,000 psi) and then inserted into a quartz tube and evacuated. Rf heating was employed. Above the tin melting point (230°C) liquid tin was forced out of the ingot, but was pulled back by capillary action after approximately 0.5 hr of continuous pumping at 700°C. Thus, it appears that evacuation at this temperature caused desorption of impurity gas creating wetting surfaces which, later on, favored alloying at relatively low temperatures. After a presintering period of 17 hr at 800°C, the quartz tube was tipped off and sealed into another such larger-diameter tube which, in turn, was connected to a pump system. This configuration permitted a temperature treatment at 1400°C, carried out for 65 hr, without collapsing of the glass walls or unfavorable chemical interaction of Cb3Sn with the quartz. THE so-called ?paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been con¬sidered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described' as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist.
