THE solid solubility of cementite in a-iron has been investigated a number of times and there is now general agreement on the solubility of about 0.018 wt pct at the eutectoid temperature, 720°C. With decreasing temperature, the solubility falls off so rapidly and to such a low value that no data obtained by standard metallurgical methods are available below 500°C. Using a new technique, however, Dijkstral has obtained apparently accurate solubilities down to 400°C; which data agree well with previously measured solubilities in the 600" to 700°C temperature range.' The present paper has in part the purpose of extending his work to still lower temperatures. Earlier work of Low and Gensamer3 on iron has established that the presence of a relatively small amount of carbon can play a tremendous role in affecting the mechanical properties. In particular they found that the yield point remained high as they reduced the amount of carbon in the iron; the yield point dropped only after the carbon content had fallen to something less than 0.003 wt pct, the point where their carbon analysis failed. It seemed desirable to the present author to see if some means could not be found to extend this part of their work. This investigation has then the additional purpose to determine the range of carbon concentration in which the major change occurs. Solubility The method used in the present work to measure small percentages of carbon in a-iron utilizes internal friction. MANY things must be considered in coming to a decision as to what type of crushing and grinding equipment is to be used for preparing run-of-mine ore for concentration, amalgamation, flotation, or cyanidation. This paper is intended in no sense as a thorough discussion of these various factors, but rather contains a few observations based on a wide experience in the manufacture and application of milling machinery. One important governing factor is the tonnage to be dealt with. In large plants treating several thousands of tons in eight hours, a large jaw or gyratory crusher of substantial construction is standard equipment for reducing ore to 8 or 10 in. or finer. In open-pit work, using power shovels with 4- or 5-yd. dippers, a jaw crusher should have a receiving opening of 48 by 60 in., or 60 by 84 in., so that dynamite or hand sledging will not be required for breaking to a finer size before primary crushing. The coarsely broken ore is then conveyed by a belt to vibrating screens, the oversize from which is again conveyed by belts to secondary crushers having openings of 12 or 14 in., the product from which is conveyed to storage. From storage, the material goes to a finishing gyratory for reduction to 1/4 in. or finer.

(written discussion ?).¬Your secretary requested a brief description of the Russell Sage Foundation, in order that members of the Institute, if they should desire to avail themselves of it, would know what type of service is offered to them through our institution. The foundation was established in 1907 by the gift of Mrs. Russell Sage of $10,000,000 as a capital fund, the income of which is to be spent for the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States. One of the lines of activity which the foundation has felt would lead toward this end is the development and promotion of community surveys; and because the scope and methods followed in these surveys are very similar to the scope and method of much of the institution's work in general, an idea of its main activities can perhaps be given best by describing one of our surveys. Incidentally, it may be pointed out that antecedent to the survey stand at least two important facts: first, the recognition. that communities are active, not static forces, that they develop, that changes in. material and human relationships occur continuously, and that with them come new social and civic problems which must, in many cases, be diagnosed and prescribed for anew; and second, the reality of scientific advances along lines which make possible at least some measure of solution of the problems. Evidences of these changes are abundant; many of them are found in the rapid growth of cities in the last few decades. Villages in agricultural districts, places where everybody knew everybody else, where the pulpit had been long the chief or only influence molding public opinion, where the air was unclouded by the smoke from factory stacks, where the water supply was not affected by pollution, where sunlight and building

IT is well known by every one who has had to deal with boiler tubes that these are often seriously affected by a sort of corrosion, occurring as a local pitting, that frequently causes a perforation of the tube in a rather short time. The characteristic appearance of this corrosion is shown in Fig. 1. A very similar corrosion occurs in condenser tubes (Fig. 2).1 A study of the microstructure or local chemical composition of the metal (iron; 70 :30 brass) fails to reveal any cause for this pitting. Of course one might possibly assume the starting point-to be some oxide particle, causing an electrolytic local action, but this in no way explains the continued corrosion, progressing even when the assumed oxide particle must have disappeared. By the excellent work done by the Corrosion Research Committee of the Institute of Metals, and communicated, in October, 1923, to the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Newcastle-on-tyne, stress was laid on the fact that a content of entangled air has a very obnoxious effect. In the following correspondence, Sir George Goodwin stated that "engineers have, for a long time past, regarded air as the big enemy to be fought against in all questions of corrosion"2 and Kenneth Fraser pointed out that the most vital point is "the avoidance or removal of possibly the chief cause of present day corrosion, i. e. entrapped air and gases brought out of solution."' In their reply, however, the authors state that they had "never for a moment believed that entangled air was responsible for the beginnings of corrosion, and express the opinion that the gradual liberation of air could not account for localized corrosion."4 On consulting the many textbooks on corrosion, as that

The relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heat,ing at 200" C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300" C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500" C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950" C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Material and Method The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent, copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to 1/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100" C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to . boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched. Results Data from the tests are shown in the table and plot (see Fig. 1); conductivity is referred to the International Annealed Copper Standard at 20" C. Conductivity hard is considerably less than conductivity soft.1 The increase is sharp when the wire anneals. The maximum, 101.15 per cent, in the particular material used, comes at 500º C.; thereafter the conductivity falls to 100.53 per cent. after 950" C. annealing, a drop of 0.62 per cent.

A formulation is given for describing the rate of expansion of spherical bubbles rising in liquids the freeboard of which is evacuated. The computer solution of the resultant differential equations has shown that, for low freeboard pressures (less than about 5 mm Hg), on approaching the free surface the bubbles expand much less rapidly than predictable from equilibrium considerations. In other words, in this region the pressure inside the bubbles will be significantly larger than the static pressure in the liquid corresponding to the position of the bubble. These theoretical predictions were confirmed by experimental work, using two-dimensional air bubbles rising in mercury. The important consequence of these findings is that the expansion of gas bubbles in vacuum degassing operations will be a great deal less than expected from hydrostatic considerations. This would lead to a significant reduction in the available interfacial area and may explain the apparent poor efficiency of many vacuum degassing units. VACUUM degassing as a treatment for liquid steel has gained widespread popularity in recent years; the number of known installations exceeds several hundred at the present time.' Although much information is available on both the thermodynamics of the system and the overall performance of various industrial units, much less is known about the fundamental aspects of the process kinetics.2-4 The basic physical situation common to virtually all vacuum degassing operations is the interaction between gas bubbles (swarms of bubbles) and the surrounding molten metal, held in a container, the freeborad of which is at a low absolute pressure. Once formed (or introduced from an external source) the bubbles will ascend, due to the buoyancy forces, and, during this ascent, a significant increase in their volume will occur. This progressive increase in the bubble volume is due to two factors: a) the continuous reduction in the static pressure acting on the bubble during its rise; and b) mass transfer into the bubble from the surrounding molten steel. In a recent paper Richardson and Bradshaw developed equations5 for describing mass transfer into gas bubbles from molten metals at reduced pressures. However, in deriving these expressions it was assumed that the pressure inside the bubble was identical to the static pressure in the adjacent liquid. In other words, the volume of the bubble was considered to be in equilibrium with the pressure of the fluid adjacent to it. This assumption, thus their analysis presented, was thought to be reasonably accurate for most of the bubble's ascent; however, it was unlikely to be valid in the immediate vicinity of the free surface, held at a low pressure. It was pointed out in the discussion6 that the region close to the surface may be of considerable importance as both the driving force and the interfacial area available for mass transfer are at their highest value here. The ' 'anomalous" behavior of gas bubbles when approaching a free surface at low pressures was recently confirmed in a preliminary investigation by Szekely and Martins. ?1 Here high-speed motion photography was used to study air bubbles rising in a column of n-tetradecane with a freeboard pressure of 0.1 mm Hg. It was found that significant distortion of the bubbles occurred on approaching the free surface; furthermore, the expansion observed was much less than what one could expect from hydrostatic considerations, i.e., factor a previously discussed. It follows from the foregoing that a detailed study of these phenomena would be justified both from fundamental considerations and because of their potential relevance to technology. The purpose of the paper is to present a more realistic formulation for the expansion of a gas bubble approaching a low-pressure region, together with a comparison of the theoretical prediction with experimental measurement. An inert bubble will be considered in the first instance; it is thought that the understanding of the fluid mechanics is an essential first step toward the realistic formulation of the mass transfer process. This latter problem will be the subject of a subsequent publication. FORMULATION The Physical Model. Consider a spherical bubble, of initial radius Ro, rising in a fluid, having a density pL. Initially let the bubble be at a distance H from the free surface, and at a pressure Pgo, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Pgo, the initial pressure in the bubble, is given by the following equation: pgo = Po = Ptp +pLgH [ la] where Po is the pressure in the liquid corresponding to the initial position of the bubble and Ptp is the pressure at the free surface. AT a recent meeting of the Utah Section. A.I.M.E., P. D. Nielson, general plant superintendent of the new Geneva steel plant at Provo, Utah, spoke on "General Operations of the Geneva Plant." Mr. Nielson explained that the plant was located at Provo, Utah, on account of railroad facilities, the proximity of coal, iron, and limestone, and the nearness of water for operating the plant. Water probably was the most important item in making the decision.

Lead sulphate occurs as anglesite, and is formed in every roasting of lead sulphides or sulpho-salts containing lead. In smelting in the blast furnace an ore containing natural or artificial lead sulphate, a large part of the sulphur present goes to the formation of the intermediary product matte which requires further treatment for the recovery of the values it contains. It is therefore of importance to study the behavior of lead sulphate at elevated temperatures, both without and with reducing agents, especially as the information available gives data which are more or less conflicting. 11. Decomposition of PbS04 by Heat The dissociation of PbSO4 into PbO and SO3 or SO2 and 0 has been discussed by many metallurgists. The following data are considered to be representative. Doeltz and Graumannl found that PbS04 was not affected-by heat at 800" C.; that dissociation began at 900" C., and was rapid at 1,000° when the salt lost in 1 1/2 hr. 14.3 per cent. of its weight, the dry salt containing 26.43 per cent. SO3. Hofman and Wanjukow2 summarize their work upon the dissociation of metallic sulphates with the statement that the decomposition of PbS04 begins at 195' C., but progresses very slowly, with the formation of the basic salt 6PbO.5SO3 at 705"; that this salt undergoes a transformation at 847") begins to be decomposed at 888") to sinter at 896", and to fuse at 910"; rapid dissociation begins at 952") and is accompanied by volatilization of PbO; retardations at 958" and 962" indicate an acceleration of decomposition which, however, is not complete. Proske3 found that PbSO4 gave off at 900" C. in 30 min. only 0.63 per cent. of its 803, and that the loss increased with

BAUXITE is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and as a basis for certain chemical industries. A small amount is used for refractories and for other purposes. COMPOSITION Dana and others give the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.2H20 and the composition as A12037 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. It has been definitely shown, however, that bauxite does not exist as a specific mineral but rather as a rock. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203.3H20 (A12037 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha mono¬hydrate), A1203.H20(Al203) 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct); diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203.H2O(A12037 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic in Europe is predominantly a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, subordinately a mixture of boehmite and diaspore, or gibbsite and diaspore. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite. Corundum (A1203) is not included under bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities, including silica, in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloysite, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulphide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous and ferruginous bauxite and siliceous and

Recrystallization and grain growth in thoria dispersed nickel and nichrome were recently studied by Webster as a function of temperature and deformation. The unexpected part of these results was that specimens which had received heavier deformation developed greater resistance to recrystallization. Retardation of recrystallization was accompanied by the formation of voids around thoria dispersion. To explain these results, Webster suggested that the formation of void around the particles increased the effective size of thoria particles. This resulted in greater impediment to the grain-boundary migration and as a consequence the recrystallization of the matrix is retarded. In the present note an alternative and more probable explanation for the effect of voids on recrystallization is presented. The exact mechanism of void formation in thoria dispersed nickel or nichrome is not known. However, it is reasonably certain that it must be preceded by the stress concentration in the matrix around thoria dispersion during the deformation.'' The resulting stress concentration must be sufficient enough to supply the surface energy for the new surfaces created. Further, the decrease in the strain energy of the matrix surrounding the potential void nucleus must be larger than the surface energy of the newly created surface. The release of strain energy due to formation of crack results in a strain free cylinder of the material around the voids.13 If the void formation is not localized, at few points only (as is the case here), this process may lead to considerable amount of release of strain energy of the matrix. The pattern of recrystallization behavior of single phase homogeneous matrix as well as the matrix having a second phase dispersion is same except for the fact recovery and recrystallization are more clearly delineated.14 In general, the recrystallization temperature is lowered (i.e., recrystallization is easier) with increase in the amount of cold work. This is due to the increase in stored energy in the matrix with increasing amount of deformation. If somehow there is a relaxation of strain energy in the matrix, the recrystallization should become difficult because of the decrease in the amount of stored energy available for recrystallization. Since the formation of voids leads to a decrease in the strain energy of matrix, the recrystallization of the matrix would be inhibited due to the formation of voids during deformation prior to recrystallization. It has been observed by earlier workers15'16 that the presence of preexisting voids in a matrix retards the recrystallization. The essential issue here is how do the voids act to produce this effect. If the voids influence recrystallization only by blocking the grain boundary migration, then the effect should be maximum when they are present almost exclusively along grain boundary. These conditions are obtained during high temperature deformation. However, the voids produced due to creep along grain boundary are not able to prevent recrystallization17 suggesting that they are not effective in blocking grain boundary movement. Recently it was shown by Davies and Williams that the voids can act as sinks for vacancies." As a result the processes dependent on vacancy diffusion like recovery, recrystallization, dislocation climb, and so forth, will be hindered. This fact may be responsible for inhibition of recrystallization during subsequent deformation and annealing cycles. It is to be noted here that there is a large difference between the density of voids in creep experiments and the other experiments where retarding effect of voids on recrystallization is seen. The voids in former may number up to l04 to l05 per sq cm whereas in latter cases the voids density is typically around 1010 to 1013 per sq cm. It appears that the decrease in supply of vacancies in creep is insufficient to adversely affect the recrystallization due to low void population. The author is grateful to P. Das Gupta and S. P. Ray for helpful discussions. Author's Reply D. Webster Tiwari appears to have misunderstood the nature of grain boundary-particle interactions. Tiwari (quoting Cahn) states that second phase particles become more effective as they become smaller, therefore as the voids in TDNiC make the thoria particles effectively bigger their ability to resist grain boundary movement is impaired. This particle size argument was originally proposed in the form of an equation by Zener 20 years agol9 and is not necessarily valid as is discussed below. However, assuming it is valid, it predicts a greater boundary restraining effect by smaller particles simply because their combined cross sectional area is greater at a constant volume. If the number of particles remains the same and their effective size increases, as in the present case, Zener's equation predicts a greatly reduced grain size. This is because the effect

Kelley made an address of welcome to the Institute, which was responded to by President Raymond. Thirty-nine papers of great professional value had been read, and sixty-nine members and twenty-four associates added to the Institute. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author's mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. AN important regional meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held, at Salt Lake City on Aug. 22 to 26, jointly with the fifth annual meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. The whole meeting was marked by enthusiasm, keen attention to the subjects under discussion, and many renewals of personal contacts. The trips to the various plants were well attended and the local press paid much attention to the meeting. The A. I. M. E. sessions began Aug. 23, with a non-technical morning session. J. 0. Elton, manager for the International Smelting Co., presided. The purpose of this session was to present in a non-technical manner the relation of flotation to mining, smelting, and the State. Ernest Gayford, metallurgist with the General En-gineering Co. of Salt Lake City, gave the definitions of flotation as suggested by Rickard, the dictionary, Weinig, and Taggart. The active agent in flotation is the air bubble, and the two prime requisites are the formation of bubbles and the creation of selective action of the bubbles for metallic particles instead of for gangue particles. Broadly, all the sulfides are floatable minerals, but the oxides, carbonates, silicates and sulfates are not. As far as Utah is concerned, flotation has been one of the greatest means of conserving its natural re-sources, because it has converted millions of tons of waste rock into pay ore; it is recovering millions of pounds of metal formerly lost in tailings; it has con-verted the zinc from a liability into an asset; and has kept thousands of men at work and distributed millions in dividends for the benefit of the State. As to the future of flotation, Mr. Gayford can con-ceive that the next 5 or 10 years may see as much, if not more, advance than was made in the preceding period. The big problem is dressing oxides, carbonates, silicates, and sulfates, and simplification of the number of reagents, also the separation of different gangue min-erals from one another.

The region about the south shore of Lake Superior is to geologists one of the most interesting districts of the United States, embracing as it does, in a limited area, old crystalline rocks, together with forms that are almost in their original condition of a beach sand and mud. In this region was first established the base of the geological column, the Azoic (" without life") System of Foster and Whitney, or the Archæan (" the beginning ") of Dana. Overlying this system are found the sandstones and limestones of the Paleozoic (" ancient life "), and their associated lava-flows (Algonkian ?). These systems possess a strong economic interest, owing to the stores of iron in the Azoic and of copper in the Paleozoic or Eozoic of this district, which forms one of the most important mining regions in America. The geology of this section is so difficult and complicated that, in its general discussion, perhaps no proposition can be stated concerning any portion of it to which exceptions cannot be taken. Indeed, out of the general discussion of different points comes in time the truth, and various geologists, even now, are working over this region in the endeavor to arrive at some consensus, or at least to determine upon what points they can agree, and upon what points difference of opinion will have to exist between them at present, until further evidence can be obtained. The writer will endeavor to give in a brief form that which appears to him at present to be the most correct statement of the geological structure of the region, admitting that from time to time, as more complete evidence shall be obtained, he expects to change his views in the future, as he has done in the past, if that evidence shall cause him to believe that he has been mistaken.
