Nickel is used as an alloying element in several complex commercial aluminum alloys, among which are found some very interesting properties, such as relatively high strength at elevated temperatures, relatively low coefficient of expansion, the absence of permanent growth, ability to take a good polish, and a bright, pleasing as-cast surface. For that reason the aluminum-nickel system was included in the list of binary aluminum systems that are being studied as a preparation for the investigation of more complex commercial alloys. This paper is the fifteenth of a series from the Research Laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America reporting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys of high purity. The aluminum-nickel equilibrium diagram from 0 to 18 per cent nickel was determined, using the purest material available. Previous Investigations The entire aluminum-nickel system was studied thermally and microscopically by Gwyer.1 At the aluminum end of the system he found the intermetallic compound NiA13. He found a eutectic at 6 per cent nickel with a melting point of 630" C. A slight thermal arrest, which he could not explain, was also noted in alloys from 2.5 per cent to 41.9 per cent nickel at 550" C. Bingham and Haughton,2 in a later investigation of alloys of aluminum with copper and nickel found the eutectic concentration of the binary aluminum-nickel system at about 5.3 per cent nickel. REFINERS of lead by the Parkes process have always been solicitous of recovering the zinc used in the desilverization, and justly so, as the loss in zinc constitutes one of the heavy costs in this method of refining. Part of this loss is due to the absorption of zinc by lead, and in the present state of knowledge is not recoverable as metallic zinc. The remainder of the zinc, which finds its way into the precious-metal-bearing crust, is recoverable and naturally engages the operators' most exacting attention. Careful elimination of the impurities in base bullion has enabled the refiner to produce a zinc crust better adapted to retorting, which reflects favorably in the zinc recovery; and to produce a richer crust, thereby lowering the zincking cost, as the increased efficiency of the zinc results in less of it being in circulation. It is obvious that if the ratio of concentration be increased, a lessening of the amount of crust formed will ensue, throwing less work on the retorts and diminishing the amount of retort metal sent to the cupels, thus making an actual money saving in all these operations. In the effort to obtain a rich crust, the metallurgist has increased the heat to a considerable degree, upon the assumption that at the higher temperature the zinc-silver alloy could be squeezed free from the adhering lead. A further possibility for improvement suggested itself in the freezing-point curve of Prof. H. C. Carpenter, upon zinc and silver. Study of this curve disclosed the existence of a definite chemical compound, . Zn3Ag2, with a freezing point of 665° C., a promising compound for practical application.

Selective oxidation (preferential oxidation of a single alloy component) can be an important oxidation mode in the case of alloys such as Si-Fe, Al-Fe, and so on, when heat-treating in atmospheres of low oxygen potential. It was the purpose of this work to identify the oxide films formed on iron containing 31/4 pct Si at low oxygen potentials, and to make some observations on the H2O/H2 ratios required to form them. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD HYDROGEN of varying water content offers a very convenient method of establishing a wide range of oxidizing power, or oxygen potential. The method chosen to provide a desired H2O/H2 ratio was to nearly saturate hydrogen at room temperature by bubbling the gas through water at room temperature, and then to wring out the excess water by passing the wet gas through a long glass spiral immersed in a refrigerated liquid at a desired dew point. After oxidation, the samples were examined by electron diffraction in order to identify any film which might be present. PREPARATION AND TREATMENT OF SAMPLES The samples were prepared from a Si-Fe alloy made in the laboratory using electrolytic iron and 96 pct ferro-silico11, vacuum-induction melted, hot-rolled then cold-rolled to 0.015-in. thickness. After the cold-rolling the samples were annealed at 1000°C. Transmission Laue X-ray patterns showed very little evidence of preferred orientation, but it is likely that a weak texture could have escaped notice. The chemical analysis was as follows: 3.34 Si, 0.01 Al, 0.001 0, 0.006 C, 0.002 N. Before each sample was oxidized, it was polished through 4/0 emery paper, cleaned and dried using benzene, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, absolute alcohol, and ether. The method of oxidizing the samples was as follows: Samples about 1/2 by 1 by 0.015 in. were held in the upper, cool part of a vertical vacuum furnace until the desired temperature was established in the furnace, Fig. 1. The sample was then lowered into the uniform hot zone where it was heated quickly to the desired temperature, and subjected to hydrogen of controlled moisture content (dew point) as mentioned previously. Temperatures from 400" to 1000°C were used, and dew points from room temperature to —78°C were explored. In general, the runs lasted about 6 hr, but a few runs were of different duration, as will be indicated later. After the predetermined period of time had elapsed, the specimens were withdrawn by the hollow stainless steel-quartz holder to a cool zone at the top of the furnace. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The results are summarized in Table I. Most of the electron-diffraction patterns were obtained by glancing-angle reflection, but in a few cases it was possible to strip the oxide films from the surface by a total immersion in a 3 pct bromine-methanol solution. Some of the thinner stripped films yielded quite satisfactory transmission patterns. However, both diffraction techniques yielded the same results; the patterns while most frequently showing a (low) tridymite, also showed a (low) cristobalite in some cases. A few patterns showed evidence of both phases. Because of the known nonequilibrium behavior of silica, it is not surprising that both forms of silica could coexist on one sample. It was noted that at fairly low dew points such as —40°C, there was a tendency for diffuse diffraction rings, suggesting a very small crystallite size. Also some subsequent experiments to be reported later show that thin silica films can be amorphous.

The first producing wells completed in the Kettleman Hills arca were noteworthy for their high gas-oil ratios. As a result they became the object of criticism, and controversies arose based on their alleged lack of gas conservation. Ultimately protracted hearings ensued in the District Court of the area, and diverse rulings and subsequent modifications have been handed down affecting the permissible gas-oil ratios. When the Kettleman North Dome Association was formed in April, 1931, and the control of the major portion of the North Dome area vested therein, it was decided to produce only those wells which had a relatively low gas-oil ratio. Among the wells having the highest gas-oil ratio were the Milham Elliott No. 1 (the discovery well) and the Continental Elliott 12-8. drilled as an offset to it. Under the numbering system adopted by the Kettleman North Dome Association, these wells are now known as 88-2P and 1-12P, respectively. Milham Elliott No. 1 was originally drilled to 7236 ft., then redrilled to 7108 ft. The upper portion of the Temblor Horizon produces with a very large gas-oil ratio; production which actually consists of light crude oil with an accompanying large.volume of gas. Little was known as to the location of the Temblor formation at that time but it is now generally accepted that its top was encountered at 6180 ft., giving 928 ft. of penetration. Initial production was estimated at 4000 bbl. of oil and 80 to 90 million cubic feet of gas per day, giving a gas-oil ratio in excess of 20,000 cu. ft. of gas per bbl. of oil. This ultimately increased to a ratio of about 48,000 at the time the well was killed when it was producing about 1100 bbl. of oil and 52 million cubic feet of gas, with a flow pressure of 1200 pounds. The Continental Elliott 12-8 was drilled to a depth of 6876 ft. with the top of the Temblor at 6100, giving a penetration of 776 ft. SEVERAL years ago the frequent breaking of wheels on the 66-cu. ft. cars used with the underground electric haulage suggested that the numerous frogs in the track might be a contributing cause toward this breakage. As a remedy a spring frog was thought of, but the 30-lb. rails used were too small for such a de-vice to be made, that would stand the work. THE 129th meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers convened at New York City, in the Engineering Societies Building, Feb. 18-20, 1924. On February 21 an excursion was made to the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Bethlehem, where about 200 members and guests were splendidly entertained. An illustrated description of the Bethlehem Plant will be published next month. The meeting and excursion were largely attended; the registration at New York totalled 1276 versus 1201 in 1923. William Kelly, long identified with the iron-mining industry of the Lake Superior district, was elected President of the A. I. M. E. for the coming year, at ,the annual business meeting, Feb. 19, succeeding E. P. Mathewson. The following Directors were also elected (the date signifies year of termination of office; the final figure indicates the "District" the Director represents).

In tunneling or mining where hydraulic shields, moles, or rock boring equipment is used lasers such as those shown guide the production machine by providing a continuous and visible line and grade reference. In this application the laser may be mounted in the heading, preferably somewhere above spring line. If we view the circular heading as a compass in the vertical plane with 0º referencing at the crown of the heading and 180º on the invert, then it might be said that the laser may be mounted anywhere from 270º through 0º to 90º. The laser is generally mounted 2 to 3 ft off the wall or the crown of the heading by means of a bracket that may be attached directly to the liner plate. In cases where no liner plate is used, then brackets may be bolted directly into the ribs, or grouted directly into the rock. Once the laser is in position the beam is projected to the face. Two points must be surveyed upstream between the laser and the face which define line and grade. Targets may be suspended beneath each of these points approximately 2 to 3 ft. These targets may be circular or rectangular with a surface area which approximates 16 sq in. Each of these two targets should have a ½ to ¾ in. hole drilled directly in their center. When the laser is adjusted so that the beam passes through the holes in each of the two targets, the laser beam itself will parallel the center line of the tunnel and become a visible line and grade reference over the total beam projection.

ALBERT Ladd Colby, who died suddenly of influenza at Torquay, England, on Apr. 30,1924, was born in New York City, on June 26,1860. He was educated in the public schools of New York, at the College of the City of New York, and received the degree of Ph. B. from the Columbia School of Mines in 1881. He continued his studies at Columbia, acting occasionally as assistant to Prof. C. F. Chandler, until 1883. For the next three years he was Assistant Professor of Chemistry in Lehigh University; then head chemist and metallurgical engineer of the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Bethlehem, Pa., occupying the latter position until 1903. As head chemist his active and inventive mind devised several improvements in apparatus for increasing the rapidity and accuracy of the analytical work; as metallurgical engineer, he was, from time to time, in charge of the blast-furnace, open-hearth, bessemer, and puddling departments; he had entire charge of the inspection, assignment, and economic use of all metallurgical materials, and he early gave his attention to the formulation of specifications for metallurgical materials—an activity in which he long held a distinguished part in this country, and as a representative of his own country in England and Europe. He also sewed as expert for his company in patent suits, again laying the foundation for valuable service later as a consulting engineer. In this latter capacity he was excelled by few, if any, contemporaries in the iron and steel industry. His mind was ingenious, thorough, clear, and keen, both in the preparation of evidence and its presentation to the Court. He very quickly appraised the value of evidence, or of an answer to a question, and knew how to secure the infermation, either from the available literature of any language, or by special researches or plant studies. In the executive control of literary research for patent purposes, his long training, infinite capacity for digging through long series of articles in English, German or French, and clear formulation of the vital subject matter for the guidance of assistants, made him invaluable. He was also an adept in collecting information on special branches of his profession. For example, when the science of metallography began to assume importance, he made the first really comprehensive bibliography covering the literature of all siderurgical countries; for the newly formed International Nickel Co. he gathered all the information extant on the subject of nickel steel, both in the literature and in the minds of experts in America and Europe. IT has been said that carbon is "ubiquitous" with reference to iron alloys. Certainly at temperatures where carbon and iron form the solid solution, austenite, it may be readily added to, or removed from, steel surfaces. Differences in concentration potential are the sole requirements for carbon flow. To measure the rate of carbon flow, a proportionality factor, D, is arbitrarily expressed in units of (length)2 X (time)-1. If the term used for carbon concentration is weight pct C, as is customary, then a factor must be found, changing this term to one of weight per unit volume when the diffusion coefficient, D, is used in flow formulae. The determination of D values for carbon is complicated since D varies with the concentration itself. The Matano method has often been employed for systems involving a variant D. This method expreses an evaluation of unsteady flow whereby .0 is given a relationship with the numerical value of C-X slopes. The author contends that this solution is incorrect, except when D is invariant. The primary purpose of this paper is to support this contention. Here diffusion is controlled under two conditions of flow. The first part deals with the steady state; the second part considers unsteady flow under definite restrictions. Beginning with the fundamental concept, the development is continued until equations for C-X curves are obtained. The solution is then subjected to experimental data. It is realized that a great amount of reliable data is required for a rigorous proof. No such research is claimed. Instead an attempt is made to set forth the physical significance of the diffusion mechanism, and particularly to express the factors which influence the flow of carbon in austenite. Of equal significance is the implication that gaseous media may be employed with reasonable accuracy in making these determinations. THE STEADY STATE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN AUSTENITE The fundamental experiment defining diffusion in solid metals may be readily performed for carbon in gamma iron.1 For this experiment a thin plate of medium carbon steel is chosen. The surfaces of this plate may be taken as two parallel planes which may be considered infinite for points well in the center of the planes. These two planes are held at different concentrations of carbon at a constant temperature. This temperature, 1700°F for example, is one where the single phase, carbon in solution with gamma iron, exists. When these conditions are held for a sufficient time the concentration of carbon of the different points of the solid settles down towards its steady state value. At points well removed from the ends, the concentration will remain the same along planes parallel to the surfaces of the plate.

It has been shown that the resistance to corrosion of duralumin sheet is greatly influenced by the quenching medium used in heat treatment, or, more specifically, by the rate of cooling during quenching. The severity of corrosive attack after exposure to salt-water spray increases in .the following order: The tensile strength, yield point and elongation are only slightly affected by the quenching medium, as shown in Table 1. Tensile test requirements: yield stress, 25,000 lb. per sq. in. minimum; ultimate stress, 55,000 lb. per sq. in. minimum; elongation in 2 in., 18 per cent. minimum.

SULPHUR is a very well known mineral and apparently is produced in many places. It is engendered from an unctuous earthy and powerfully hot substance so that it is considered among experienced workers to bear a resemblance to the element of fire. This is called by these same men the masculine seed and the prime agent of Nature in the composition of metals. Because of its great dryness and heat it has, as experience shows, affinity with fire, which is easily introduced in it when brought near. And once introduced the fire is quenched only with difficulty before its unctuousness is wholly consumed. Although it shows itself to us of such a hot and dry nature, we must not think that sulphur is a substance so pure that it can stand by itself or that in order to attain its form it has no need of its portion and part of moisture like every other mixture. This is shown to us by its easy fusion, in which it resembles the metals. This thing is found in many places and in many varieties of color; some are white, others yellow and orange, and some others between gray and black. They also say that some red is found. It does not occur in that arrangement of veins like other minerals, but most liberal Nature makes whole mountains of it as is seen in the Aeolian islands, [26] near Sicily, in Etna or Moncibello which is the island of Sicily, at Pozzuoli, in the territory of Rome, in the Sienese domain at San Filippo, and in many other similar places. It is a substance that has a very strong odor and is most unpleasant to smell. It is very fixed in its substance so that it is never corrupted by time, by boiling, or by the moisture of water. For although it may stand in water a long time it never becomes soft nor does it ever decrease or increase in weight. It is brittle and easily crushed very fine. It is said that a trace of garlic rubbed on the mortar helps anyone who wishes to reduce it to impalpability. Its ores have a form more like earth than like stone although they some¬times have the color of a certain soft rock. The places where it is found are easily recognized by the great odor that they give out and by the very hot baths that often spring forth near it. INTRODUCTION The purposes of this conference are aimed mainly at the treatment of fine or ultra fine particles in terms of beneficiation and chemical processing of minerals. For this reason the discussion on leaching will be confined to processes which treat slurries rather than those which treat a large variety of low and medium grade materials by vat leaching or dump leaching techniques. This eliminates such hydro-metallurgical systems as solution mining from consideration. This discussion will focus predominantly upon the behavior of fine particles as associated with their chemistry in leach reactors. Four major sub-headings may be pointed to as encompassing the major areas in which research and engineering design activity should be directed. These are: 1) generation of fine particles, 2) heterogeneous kinetics of leaching, 3) solution chemistry, 4) engineering design and control of flow reactors. Each of these topics will be addressed briefly in this presentation to illustrate current developments and future needs. GENERATION OF FINE PARTICLES As will be pointed out more quantitatively in the next section the generation of fine particles has great influence upon leaching systems inasmuch as in most cases the rate of leaching is related to the surface area of the particles involved. This is true for acid or base leaching of oxide minerals as well as a large variety of sulfides which have been considered in commercial processes and which have in the case of copper received increased attention during the past decade. Mean particle sizes of slurries vary broadly depending upon the type of grinding equipment being used. THE following presentation of the more important accumulated facts and probabilities involved in copper ore deposition is based on my experience in examination work and study of the extensive litera-ture of the subject; to make personal mention of all sources of information would require the naming of a small army of able geologists and other investigators who have contributed to, building up the science. I have tried to present the salient features of the subject in logical order and condensed form, and to point out the relative importance of processes involved. Doubt-less many geologists could suggest some changes and many additions. ORIGINAL SOURCE The original source of all copper was in the earth's interior; it has been brought to the outer part of the earth, within reach of man, in three ways: (1) By intrusions and flows of basic igneous rocks containing copper in minute quantities, presumably as silicate or sulfide. No orebodies have been formed by this method. (2) As segregations within intrusive igneous rocks, the copper minerals having solidified at the same time as the rock itself. The few deposits known to have been formed in this manner have been of little or no importance. The oft quoted Sudbury nickel-copper deposits are now known to belong to the class following. (3) By gaseous or liquid aqueous emanations from ,large deep-seated masses of intrusive molten rock. These emanations, or mineral solutions, ascended through zones of connected openings in the earth's crust and dropped their load at points far above their source. Deposits formed in this manner were the primary source of nearly all, if not all, of the world's copper production.

The paper reviews the elements of a conventional insurance program; explains why such a program is not fully responsive to the project financier's needs; examines some of the new insurance coverages that can supplement a traditional program; and emphasises that these insurance markets are still in the early stages of their development with consequent effects on capacity (insured amount) and to some extent price (insurance premium).

HIS investigation originated as a result of a pre-vious experimental study' of the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloys fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. Densities of powder compacts prepared for the magnetics investigation varied from 7.45 to 7.70 g per cu cm or from 93 to 95 pct of the experimental value of 8.08 g per cu cm for a fused alloy of the same composition.' While this range of density is considered sufficiently high for most applications, the highest possible density is to be desired for maximum magnetic properties. By applying a technique similar to the one described above to a pure electrolytic iron powder, Rostoker³ was able to achieve a density of 7.895 g per cu cm, which is the highest density ever reported for sintered iron. While Rostoker's work involved the sintering of an elemental powder rather than a mixture, it was believed that higher densities should also have been obtained for alloys using the above technique because of the recoining operation and the high sintering temperature. Consequently, it was decided to investigate the various factors affecting the density of this alloy with the idea that such a study might lead to higher densities and, as a result, powder alloys having magnetic properties identical with those of the fused alloys. It was believed that the principal reason that near-theoretical densities for the powdered alloy were not obtained was the interference of gases with the normal sintering mechanism. When present during the sintering operation, gases can exert several harmful effects: they can remain on the particle surface and interfere with surface diffusion and plastic flow; they can be released and, under certain conditions, expand the void spaces through gas pressure; or they can remain trapped in the pores and exert a hydrostatic pressure that retards elimination of the pores. Jones,4 Rhines,5 Goetzel," and others have given the effect of gases in the sintering of powder compacts an extensive treatment. Among the more important sources of gases in the sintering process are dissolved gases, adsorbed gases, air entrapped during pressing, and gaseous products of chemical reactions. During sintering adsorbed gases are partly released at a relatively low temperature, while those gases entrapped during pressing cannot escape until their pressure is increased sufficiently through increasing temperature to expand the interpartjcle openings. The remaining adsorbed gases, gaseous reduction products, and dissolved gases produce a similar effect at the higher temperatures. If, in the sintering process, gas evolution occurs after the interpore channels have been sealed, an exaggerated expansion of the void spaces results. This is particularly true if the temperature is high enough for extensive plastic flow. In his fabrication of powder bars from tantalum, Balke7 had to consider the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and provide for its escape during sintering by limiting the compacting pressure to a maximum of 50 tons per sq in. The effect of gases entrapped during pressing was first noted by Trzebiatowski8 when he found that gold and silver powders decrease in density with increasing sintering temperature if pressed at 200 tsi, while they exhibit the usual increase when pressed at 40 tsi. Recent investigators9-11 have also noted that entrapped gases have an effect on the expansion of copper compacts during sintering. Proper provision for the escape of gaseous products of reduction must be made in order to avoid deleterious effects. Myers" states that in the sintering of electrolytic tantalum powder, the temperature was gradually raised to 2600°F with a pause at 2000°F to permit reduction of the oxides. Experimental Details For the present study, 50 pct Co-50 pct Fe compacts in the form of circular disks 1½ in. in diam and 0.15 in. thick were fabricated by the pressing and sintering of a mixture of the elemental powders. It was decided to follow the sintering process by means of liquid permeability measurements, because it was thought that such measurements might serve as a measure of relative pore sizes, as well as a possible indication of the point at which most of the interpore channels become sealed. However, since the permeability as measured by the flow of a liquid, such as ethylene glycol, does not give an absolute indication of the point where the pores have become isolated, a method for determining the percentage of pores connected to the surface was set up. As an additional cross check on the permeability measurements, metallographic methods were used to study the relative pore size. Finally, the property of ultimate interest, the density, was measured. Raw Materials: The powders used consisted of an annealed, 99.9 pct pure, —150 mesh grade of electrolytic iron powder, and a 98 pct pure, —200 mesh grade of reduced and comminuted cobalt powder. The cobalt powder was not further processed either by hydrogen reduction or annealing. The screen analyses for the iron and cobalt powders are given in Table I, while the chemical analyses for each type of powder are listed in Table 11. Table 111 gives the hydrogen loss measurements for the powders according to the M.P.A. Standard Method and for a higher temperature as well. In conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Miiller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties. In conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Miiller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. The total value of world offshore mineral production in 1970 is estimated around $180 million-less than 1% of the total onshore value for that year (Table 1). As such, offshore mining is still a relatively small industry. Commercial operations center around production from unconsolidated surficial deposits lying in shallow waters of the continental margins. While minerals recovered include sand and gravel, iron, tin, limestone, and aragonite, other possible mineral targets have been identified For consolidated deposits, only two offshore operations are known to exist. They are Alaska Barite Co.'s Castle Island mine (see p. 46) and Freeport Minerals Co.'s Grand Isle mine in Louisiana. At Grand Isle, sulfur is recovered from an offshore platform utilizing the Frasch process. Also, Freeport recently announced reactivation of its offshore Caminada sulfur mine at an estimated capital cost of $23 million.
