AT the last meeting of the Institute, Mr. A. L. Holley read a paper on "Steel," in which he proposes for it a definition so opposed to the one generally received, as to call for some remarks. Until within the last five or six years there has been no dispute on the subject, and it seems worth while to investigate the matter. For not only does a proper tax on all importations depend on a proper appreciation of the term steel, but it is necessary to know whether steel, or wrought-iron, or homogeneous iron are requisite in all processes of manufacture in which malleable iron is employed, on account of cost, strength, etc. Karsteu* says : " Iron may be obtained, either as an unforgeable, unweldable metal, which melts at a high heat, termed cast-iron; or as a ductile, weldable, soft metal, which can only be melted at the * Karsten, Handbuch der Eisenhüttenkunde, 3d ed., vol. i, p. 6. T. M. Morris (Measurement and Evaluation of the Rate of Flotation as a Function of Particle Size, P. 794), was the commanding officer of a patrol craft charged with guarding Aleutian waters against infiltration by the Japanese during World War II. Before going into service, he was an assistant research engineer with Anaconda Copper at Anaconda, Mont., and later a metallurgist with Tennessee Copper Co. Presently he is a professor in the Department of Metallurgy, Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo. A member of the AIME, he is a graduate of Columbia University and the University of Missouri, with a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and a Ph.D. Professor Morris is the author of a previous paper for the AIME, Measurement of the Equilibrium Forces Between an Air Bubble and an Attached Solid in Water. An outdoor man by predilection, he enjoys bird watching and hiking in his free time.

Amphoteric surfactants are heteropolar organic compounds which possess at least two functional (ionic) oppositely charged groups per molecule. The ones studied are manufactured by General Mills and possess one or more long hydrocarbon chains plus a carboxyl group (s) and an amino or imino group. Hallimond tube and M. C. Fuerstenau micro flotation cell flotation tests were performed on quartz and hematite as a function of pH using amphoteric, cationic, and anionic surfactants as collectors. For the most part, flotation could be correlated with an interaction of charged groups on the collectors with oppositely charged sites on the minerals plus association of hydrocarbon chains. The comparison of flotation in a Hallimond tube and an M.C. Fuerstenau cell shows that one should use care in using the latter if one excludes an additional frother from the system. Also, it is interesting to note that sometimes greater collector concentrations are required in the Fuerstenau cell for comparable flotation recoveries.

This paper describes a modified X-ray diffraction microscope wzethod based on the general principles of Berg-Bawett's Method, Lang's Method, and Woosters1 Technique. This new method may be used for stationary or oscillatory photomacrographs, with both reflection and transmission techniques. In the stationary technique, a small point-source of a divergent X-ray beam of white radiation is used; in the oscillatory technique, a monochromatic divergent beam is employed. The chief advantages of the method described herein are that only approximate alignment of the Bragg angle -of-interest is needed during exposure, and that a large portion of a crystal-specimen surface can he irradiated. In recent years, the study of dislocations through X-ray diffraction microscope techniques has received considerable attention as concerns the per,fection of single crystals. Very promising results have appeared in the literature.'-' These techniques are very useful when the dislocation density of a crystal is near 105 per sq cm or lower. The principle of X-ray diffraction microscopy is based on the differential effect of X-ray primary extinction between the distorted parts and the perfect parts of a crystal. When an X-ray beam impinges on a set of planes of a crystal at the correct Bragg angle, diffraction of X-rays will occur with a 90-deg phase shift of the diffracted beam. This once-diffracted beam still forms the correct Bragg angle with the planes ahead of it, if the planes are not distorted. Thus, part of the strength of the once-diffracted beam is rediffracted and the beam continues to travel in the direction of the primary X-ray beam. This twice-diffracted beam not only takes away part of the strength of the once-diffracted beam, but also causes destructive interference with the primary beam because it now is exactly 180 deg out of phase with the primary beam. As the primary beam goes farther and farther into the crystal, its intensity is continuously weakened. Asa result, the ultimate X-ray diffraction power of a set of undistorted planes is largely extinguished. This phenomenon is called primary extinction.1,2'4 If the set of planes ahead of it is distorted, the once-diffracted beam will have less chance to be rediffracted, because it could not meet the exactly correct Bragg angle for rediffraction. If a part of the beam does rediffract, this twice-diffracted beam is not exactly 180 deg out of phase with the primary beam, and thus it causes less destructive interference. As a result, the registered X-ray diffraction power of the distorted part of a crystal appears stronger than that of the perfect part. Thus, point-by-point contrast of a diffraction image is theoretically possible from a crystal containing dislocations. Molybdenum presents a series of baffling geo- chemical puzzles. It can exist in six different valence states, possessing three different coordination numbers. As a result, it combines with other elements to form a wide variety of negatively and positively charged ions and complexes whose exact chemical nature are relatively unknown. Its rather complex chemistry might be described as "ambidextrous, bi-sexual and polygamous". It is little wonder then that the geochemistry of molybdenum is relatively unknown, and compared to most common metals its geochemical behavior is somewhat unique. The behavior of a particular element or metal, such as molybdenum, in a given dispersion media is largely controlled by the stability relations among its various oxidation products. Recognition of these products and an understanding of their stability relations is therefore a prerequisite to a proper understanding of its observed behavior. Because most secondary dispersion media represent aqueous chemical systems, stability relations are best expressed as functions of Eh and pH.

Drilling in Missouri in 1944 was nearly treble the rate of 1943 because of continued development of the Tarkio pool in Atchison County and the preparation of a pool in Jackson County for a water-injection project. The pipe line from the Prairie Point gas pool in Platte County was in operation throughout the year of 1944, but several of the shallow oil pools in Cass and Jackson Counties were off production during much of 1944 because of a shortage of help. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 41,475 .ft., of which 21,187 ft. was by rotary tools and 20,268 ft. by cable tools.

The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the ''Straight-line'' principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a ''vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. A vacuum pump, equipped with a 3-hp. motor, is attached to this chamber, and maintains 25 to 26 in. vacuum during operation of the mill. The portion of the Nb-Sn phase diagram between 75 and 79 at. pct Nb at temperatures near the liquidus has been investigated by melting alloys of known composition and examining the microstmc-tzlres resulting when these melts were quenched. The Nb-Sn samples were contained in magnesia sleeves, and were mounted in a high-pressure apparatus. It was shown that Nb3Sn me1ts by a peri-tectic decomposition and that the composition of the compound Nb3Sn at the peritectic horizontal lies between 77 and 78 at. pct Nb. Analysis of the phases present in the samples was accomplished by anodic staining techniques and an electron-microbeam analyzer. DURING the past several years a great deal of work has been devoted to the Nb-Sn system, and the bulk of this work has been primarily concerned with the intermetallic phase Nb3Sn. However, the melting characteristics of Nb3Sn have not been investigated because of the difficulty in maintaining known compositions due to tin losses by vaporization, and the added difficulty of containing Nb-Sn alloys without sample-container reaction at the high temperatures involved. This paper reports on the development of a technique for containing Nb-Sn alloys under pressure high enough to prevent tin losses at temperatures in excess of the liquidus. Using this technique, melts of known composition were made and a phase diagram near the liquidus is proposed based on the microstructures resulting when these melts were quenched. EXPERIMENTAL The Nb-Sn alloys weighing 0.7 g each were prepared in the form of cylinders. Niobium powder, -200, +325 mesh, and tin shavings with a minute amount of tin powder for a binder were mixed in the desired proportions and cold-pressed at 50,000 psi in a 0.150-in. die. This cylinder was then enclosed as shown in Fig. 1, and the entire arrangement mounted in a 2.6-in. pyrophyllite tetrahedron.' The desired temperatures (-2500°C) presented several problems in high-pressure container materials. Boron nitride, the usual sample holder, was found to react with niobium to form the nitride. However, MgO cans and plugs machined from refractory rods did not melt nor react with the sample. Thick tantalum contact disks were used to carry the large currents (~450 amps) to the graphite heater, since tantalum did not melt and had enough strength to prevent extrusion of the sample. It was further observed that the graphite heater and tantalum disks could not be in direct contact with the pyrophyllite because it melts and decomposes at these temperatures to kyanite and coesite (SiO2),2 the former reacting with graphite and the latter with tantalum to form the silicide. X HE recent investigation of Butler, McCabe, and paxton' on the vapor pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium with Mn-Fe alloys has been extended to include the iron-rich solutions and alloys in the two phase equilibrium region. The study of the phase equilibrium by Kurnakov and Troneva2 and the extensive reviews of the Mn-Fe system by Hansen,3 and Hellawe114 are not in agreement with regard to the location and extent of the equilibrium between the solid phases of fcc y and complex P in the temperature range above the eutectoid temperature of approximately 975Kwhere 0 decomposes to y and bcc a. An evaluation of the existing equilibrium data is confronted with the conflicting results presented by various investigators who used techniques requiring a quenching treatment to retain the high-temperature equilibrium or encountered temperature hysteresis during thermal analyses. The difficulty of suppressing the transformation of the manganese-rich concentrations of the y-solid solution during quenching has been well etablished.' To avoid this uncertainty the phase equilibrium was investigated at temperature by measuring the partial pressure of manganese gas in equilibrium

A key point in the design and operation of a modern mining operation is the construction of what is called an ore-body model or block model. This model is a representation of reality constructed from predicted information. The blocks involved are merely subsets of the overall model which allows manipulation of the contained information on a local scale. In general, block models enable mine planners to effectively select the most promising means of extracting the ore both physically and economically. The uses of a block model can be quite diversified, but one must realize that a single model that satisfies all curiosities and forms of expertise is difficult to construct.

The export markets are of great importance to western Canadian sulfur producers, taking 70% of total products sold. For these marketers, Canadians have always supplied solid sulfur, first in a crushed, bulk form, and for the past several years in a slate form. Both form have proved inadequate for safety and environmental reasons, and new forms and processes have been developed by interested suppliers. The Canadian industry has evaluated these processes and ha made a determination of a desired Product specfication that will greatly enhance the acceptability of future Products from safety, environmental, and customer points of view. The new processed methods and resulting product characteristics are reviewed.
