A systematic study was made by the Bureau of Mines on the effect of so me hypothesized accelerators for the process of wustite reduction in carbon monoxide. When small concentrations of promoter materials in the order of 0.69 at. pct were added to the reducible charge, the rate of reduction to iron was increased. Promotion phenomenon prediction was made in light of a suyface reduction mechanism with the aid of Vol'kenshtein's effect regarding the propagation of crystal lattice disturbances by small amounts of relatively larger interstitial ions. The acceleration produced by a typical promotor, such as potassiunl, increases with protnoter concentration up to a maximum, beyond which the reduction rate decreases. Concentration for maximum promotion depends on the nature and physicochemical properties of the promoter. The extent of reduction rate enhancement is found to be directly proportional to the atomic volume and electronic charge of the additive. DESPITE the enormous volume of literature on iron oxide reduction, very little is reported concerning additive or impurity effects on this important metallurgical process. The beneficial effect bf calcium compound additions on the reducibility of iron oxide sinters has been reported by Tigerschiold,1 vor dem Esche,2 and Edstrom. Doi and Kasai~ found that the addition of lime or limestone to iron ores helps to break up any unreducible compounds, such as fayalite or ilmen-ite. and thus free the combined iron for reduction. Schenck et al. 5 suggested that the increased reduction rate obtained when adding lime could be accounted for by the instability of wustite in the presence of lime. Acid-base slagging reactions resulted in wustite disproportionation according to The dicalcium ferrite formed will yield iron and calcium oxide during reduction. Regenerated calcium oxide dissociates more wustite. This mechanism has been used by Seths and white7 to explain their experimental results. Recently, Strangway and ROSS' attributed the calcium carbonate acceleration of iron oxide agglomerate reduction to increased porosity, both initial as well as that developed during reduction. Aside from calcium carbonate, or oxide, no other promoter was noted in the literature, except for a brief mention by Barrett and woodg on the effect of sodium carbonate and aluminate as activators for the hydrogen reduction of magnetite at 600°C. The present investigation systematically studied a host of other promoters, including calcium and sodium, in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism by which promotion takes place and to fit the results into a simple chemical model. To attain this goal, the effect of promoter physical properties, such as atomic volume, electronic charge, and concentration are related to wustite reduction kinetics in this paper. Wustite reduction to iron, rather than the overall hematite reduction, was chosen since this reaction is known to be the slowest, and hence the rate-deter mining step for the overall iron oxide reduction process. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Raw Materials and Their Preparation. The pure or impregnated wustite pellets were prepared from minus 400-mesh chemically pure hematite powders. A known weight of hematite was thoroughly and uniformly mixed with a calculated weight of the additive. The mixed paste containing 35 wt pct water was gradually heated from 400" to 1200° C and fired at 1200°C for approximately 4 hr in an air atmosphere. After cooling, the sinter was pulverized to minus 100 mesh and pelletized into minus 4- plus 5-mesh spheres. Pellets were fired, similarly to the paste mix, air-cooled, sized, and stored. An appropriate weight of the charge (20 g) was placed in a zirconia reduction tube maintaining a uniform oxide bed height of 1 cm and a cross section of 7.1 sq cm for all of the test runs. The samples were supported in the vertical reaction tube by a bed of fragmented insulating firebrick plus 3- to 6-mesh alumina beads. The hematite was then transformed to wustite by reduction with a 30 pct CO2-70 pct CO gas mixture at 1000°C in a globar furnace. Complete conversion to wustite was ascertained by a continuous infrared gas analyzer recording the CO-CO2 content of the effluent gas until no carbon monoxide was absorbed from the inlet gas, and inlet-outlet gas analysis remained constant for 30 min. The wustite sample was then reduced with 100 pct CO at 100WC. From the recorded data, an initial rate of reduction was determined by the initial slope of the graph percent reduction vs time. In order to estimate the accuracy of the data, five separate determinations of the reduction curve of pure wustite, under otherwise identical conditions, were performed. The maximum deviation from the average reduction at 14 min amounted to 2 2 pct reduction. This deviation corresponds to 3.8 pct variation based on the percent reduction of the sample. Aiiy impurity effect below the limits of this maximum deviation was considered a spurious result. If the effect exceeded + 4 pct, then it was considered as a positive one. Considerable care was exercised in determining the initial rate from the slope of the initial segments of the curve. Each reduction curve was examined separately on large graph paper and the best tangent to the curve at zero time was drawn. The slope of this tangent was taken as a measure of the initial fractional reduction per minute. Although the time required to reach 50 pct reduction may be of special practical significance, initial rate measurements are invaluable in fundamental studies. DURING the last year or so, with higher prices for gold and silver, many old properties in the West have come back to life. Almost every profitable producer in the old days has been considered, and the reasons for its shut-down investigated. If it seems likely that modern ore-finding, mining, and metallurgical methods, and S35 gold can again put the property on a profitable basis, someone can usually be found to back the venture. Methods of rejuvenation vary with the property, of course, but the following outline of what has been done with one group of mines in Idaho is fairly typical and may be suggestive to others. The Golden Chariot gold-silver properties, near Silver City, consist of seven old mines, working a vein system striking north and south, which had a productive length of some 3500 ft. The vein is a quartz-filled fissure with granite walls. Gold occurs in native, and with silver in the form of electrum which is the natural alloy of the two metals. THE Tom Reed Extension and Big Jim mines of United Eastern Mining Co. are situated in the Oatman district, Mohave County, Ariz., about 28 miles southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway point. Articles descriptive of the mine surface plant, mill construction, and plant operations have been written by Otto Wartenweiler1, the designing engineer; Wheeler 0. North,2 when he was assistant general manager for the company, and Earle M. Bagley, mill superintendent.3 The last article covers average costs for the full time the mill was operated. The geology of the mines is described by F. L. Ransome4 of the United States Geological Survey. Production was started in January,. 1917, and the known orebodies were exhausted in May, 1925, showing a life of seven years and five months. On account of the comparatively short life and the fact that stoping operations were confined to two orebodies, little experimenting was done with mining methods. The two orebodies were in what is generally called the Tom Reed-United Eastern vein, which occupies a fault fissure having a normal displacement of several hundred feet. Seven or eight very productive ore shoots were mined along this vein in a distance of 1 ½ miles, the two worked by the United Eastern being 1 mile apart. The maximum dimensions of the Tom Reed Extension ore shoot were height, 750. ft.; length, 950 ft.; thickness, 48 ft. The vein structure varied from a solid quartz-calcite filling to a series of parallel stringers separated by andesite. From this body, 511,976 tons of ore were mined. (Fig. 1.)

In the olden days the making of alloys was an art, and the secrete of the craft were jealously guarded. To-day it has become a science, though the old ideas in regard to the secrets and formulæ are dying hard. Modern progress may be attributed to scientific research and testing of materials, and the substitution of chemical analytical control for " cook-book " methods. We know to-day a great deal about the constitution of alloys, the reasons of the change in structure and physical properties by heat and mechanical treatment; and this new knowledge is due for the most part to the physical chemist and metallographist, who have shown us that alloys are simply solutions, and as such obey definite laws. The application of the theories of solutions and of the phase rule tells us what ought to happen when our alloys are in a state of equilibrium. The working-out of the temperature-composition diagram (thermal diagram) for numerous alloys has thrown a light on the structure and constitution which has dispelled most of the darkness in which we labored before the advent of metallography. The work began with the determination of the freezing-point curves, and here the research of Le Chatelier,' Gautier,2 Roberts-Austen,3 and the other pioneers broke the ground. Next the physical chemists, Tammann,4 Rooseboom,5 Bancroft,6 and their colleagues, showed us the complete thermal diagram and its meaning. At this last meeting of our Institute for the year 1899, it is appropriate that we should look back at the past. To review the century's progress in the exact sciences and the resulting arts that fall within the scope of our labors is beyond my ability. But I wish to draw your attention to some phases of that progress, almost as important, which lie within the zone of sociology, touching at so many points the domain of applied technology. One of these is suggested by the library of technical literature which this century has produced —not the least important contribution to which is our own Transactions. The nineteenth century has witnessed the beneficial spread of democracy in politics. Under the impulse, to no small degree, of the same spirit, there has grown up a brotherhood of fellow-workers and a sense of fellow-ownership in the secrets of nature. Though the Patent Office has assumed such proportions as to hare become a source of national revenue, and a multitude of inventors, great and small, are seeking through its agency to secure some pecuniary profit from their devices, there is even greater eagerness among both interested and disinterested workers in the field of technology to publish their observations, and even their discoveries, and to give them to the world without remuneration. A typical example of a piston containing a ferronickel insert is shown in Fig. 1. The high coefficient of expansion of silver made it worthy of consideration, while the small size of the insert would render its use feasible in Germany as an emergency measure. The coefficients of linear expansion of several metals and ailoys are as shown in the table above. Obviously the melting point of the insert must be high enough to prevent it from melting when the light alloy is cast around it. This imposes a lower limit of about 850" C. for the solidus of the silver alloy. Pure silver melts at about 961" C., so that the tolerable depression in the solidus is rather small. To avoid deformation of the insert during use a Brinell hardness number of at least 60 appears necessary.

The purification of commercial-purity tantalum powder by vacuum sintering in the temperature range 2600° to 2860°C has been investigated. Mixtures of tantalum oxide and tantalum carbide were sintered at 1800° and 2200°C. Tantalum bars containing 1 pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. were sintered in the range 1800° to 2600°C. Anulyses were conducted on the sititeyed mixtures to determine the extent of removal of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon at each sintering condition. The mechanism for remova1 of each impurity, and the conditions necessary for preparing ductile tantalum by vacuum sintering are discussed. INTEREST in the refractory metals has been stimulated in recent years by the need for structural materials capable of operating at temperatures of 1100°C and higher. These metals include columbium (niobium) (mp 2468°C), molybdenum (mp 2620°C), tantalum (mp 2996°C), rhenium (mp 3160°C), and tung- sten (mp 3415°C). In addition to its high melting point, tantalum possesses the advantages of forming a solid, nonvolatile oxide at temperatures of interest and of being ductile and easy to fabricate. The classic method of consolidating tantalum from powder refined from the ores is by vacuum sintering at temperatures on the order of 2600°C. This sintering treatment both densifies the compacted powder bars and purifies the metal by causing impurities to boil out. The present work was undertaken to provide more quantative data on the relationship between sintering conditions and purity and to determine the mechanisms of impurity removal.

Introduction. WALTER RENTON INGALLS recently gave a very interesting talk before the student mining society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In it he showed the present status of mining as he sees it. In the talk he explained that, while discoveries of great mining districts are still possible, they are being made less and less often; that the great mining companies, although there are large numbers of mines offered for sale, are finding it less and less possible to find new mines that are up to the standard of richness that they wish for purchase. The natural conclusion is that better, cheaper, and more efficient methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting are needed if the lower-grade mines are to be worked at a profit. This is true also if the high-grade mines are to yield their greatest profit. This paper deals only with the concentrating or ore-dressing problem, and gives some thoughts which point towards greater profit. In a paper on The Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus the writer showed that there were two main lines of work that would lead to greater saving, lower tailing assay, and, therefore, greater profit. The first is the recrushing of middling or tailing products for the saving of the contained values. This is well understood and largely carried out in existing mills. The second is the saving of fine free mineral at the first opportunity. This is a matter less well understood in the mills, and to dwell upon this the present paper is written.

The metallurgical history of Republic has been completely reviewed in a paper presented at a previous meeting of the Spokane Local Section by Professor Thomson;' therefore, the present paper will be confined to matters directly pertaining to the San Poil mill: When I came to Republic last fall to look over the situation there was a plant in operation successfully treating the tailings from one of the earlier mills in the camp. I refer to the mill of the Rathfon Reduction Co. This mill was operating in accordance with modern cyaniding practice, and I was given to understand that the work was very satisfactory and profitable, else it would not have been continued as long as it was. At that time I obtained much metallurgical information of value from Harry W. Newton, Superintendent of the mill of the North Washington Power & Reduction Co. I took a number of samples from the San Poil mine, with the view of determining if Mr. Newton's experience with the ores from the other mines applied to the San Poil ores. I made a large number of tests under a variety of conditions, and found that it was possible to extract as high as 98 per cent, of the values from San Poil ore by the laboratory-tests when the ore was pulverized to 200-mesh and treated with a solution of a strength of 5 Ib. of KCN to the ton. (written discussion?).-In this exposition of experimental data, the author infers, indirectly at least, that by the Charpy test information was obtained that led to the improve-ment of certain ordnance parts and that this improvement could not have been attained without the Charpy test. On examination of the data, however, it appears that the important point of the whole matter was that while the material had been accepted from the results of longitudinal tensile tests, it was really transverse ductility that was desired. The writer has no desire to attempt to detract from the value of the paper or to discredit the Charpy test in any way, but he would like to ask the author if he will not give more clearly his reasons for preferring the Charpy impact test for investigational and control work of this kind, over the more usual tensile test made in a transverse direction. The tensile test pieces are more cheaply made than the square notched impact bars; and from the former the limit of elasticity and the ultimate strength as well as, the ductility are obtained, while in the Charpy test only one property is measured. It does not seem that the author has shown a sufficient reason for favoring the latter test, when both it and the trans-verse tensile test served his purpose equally well in indicating the proper metal and treatment required for his special forging, and it is hoped that this reason will be given more clearly as a matter of useful general information.

The structure of steel, when rendered coarse by over-heating, is made fine by re-heating to a certain temperature, the determination of which has received much attention from eminent metallurgical authorities. Among these, I may particularly mention Prof. D. Tschernoff' [Chernoff], who, about thirty years ago, studied this question in connection with his investigations on the structure of steel in genera1. † Some years later, Mr. J. A. Brinell took up the inquiry, and arrived at many important conclusions, stated in his well-known rules on the treatment of steel. ‡ These two gentlemen, however, based their reasoning chiefly upon the aspect of fractures—a method which, though it affords valuable information, does not readily reveal the different steps by which a change in structure takes place. For further light on the subject, we owe much to more recent microscopic investigations, which have made us better acquainted with the internal structure of metals. Such an investigation, closely connected with the present subject, and made by Mr. John E. Stead a few years ago, was first published in 1898.6

Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element of the earth's crust and is a constituent of nearly every type of rock (Clark, 1924, p. 13). The sources of aluminum and aluminous material most commonly used by modern industry are the bauxitic raw materials consisting of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and aluminous laterites. These are mixtures of hydrated aluminum oxide minerals and mineral impurities. End Uses Bauxite is used as an aluminum ore and in the manufacture of refractory products, aluminous chemicals, and abrasives. Other raw materials are used for aluminum ores, but their use is minor compared to bauxite. Refractory products made from bauxite are synthetic mullite, high-alumina fire bricks, castables, monoliths, cements, and ramming mixes used by the iron, steel, and cement industries. Chemicals made from bauxite are aluminum sulfate and sodium aluminate for water treatment and aluminum chloride used in refining crude petroleum. Among the abrasive products made from bauxite are coated abrasives, sharpening stones, and grinding wheels. Special grades of bauxite are used in the decolorization and clarification of raw sugar and lubricating oils. Bauxite has been used for road surfacing but mainly because other material was not more readily available. Perhaps the oldest use of bauxite and aluminous laterite is for a building stone. Ancient temples and more recent structures in India have been made from these and some varieties are suitable for decorative stone. Geology Mineralogy and Properties – Bauxite is a mineral raw material composed principally of one or more hydrated aluminum oxide minerals and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania and elements in minor or trace amounts. The hydrated aluminum oxide minerals are gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore. Corundum is not included as a bauxite mineral although it does occur in some bauxite deposits. Boehmite and diaspore are both alumina mono-hydrates and have essentially the same composition, but diaspore has a greater hardness and a higher specific gravity because of a more tightly bonded and compacted atomic structure. Gibbsite is an alumina trihydrate mineral. Properties of bauxite minerals are shown in [Table 1].

In magnetic taconite of the East Mesabi range, quartz, magnetite, and cummingtonite (OH}(Fe, Mg)(Si4O11)2) are the three major ore-forming minerals.' Fine grinding and magnetic separation of the taconite leads to a concentrate analyzing 64 to 65 pct Fe and 8 to 9 pct insoluble; the gangue content of the concentrate arising from the presence of locked magnetite-gangue particles, and of occluded gangue particles in magnetic floccules. To further upgrade such taconite concentrates, flotation appears to offer a particularly promising approach. To evaluate its effectiveness in separation, a knowledge of the flotation characteristics of each mineral comprising the concentrate becomes desirable. The floatability of magnetite and of quartz have already been reported in a previous paper,2 in which the flotation characteristics of the two minerals were correlated with the electrokinetic properties at the mineral-solution interfaces. Since cummingtonite has somewhat intermediate chemical composition between the above-named oxides, the electrokinetic and the flotation behavior of this mineral becomes of interest for both practical and fundamental reasons. In the present article the results of electrophoretic mobility measurements and of Hallimond tube flotation tests on cummingtonite are reported and are compared with those of quartz and magnetite. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sample of cummingtonite-rich taconite, received from the Mitchell pit, near Babbitt, Minn., was crushed and ground through 100 mesh, and the product was fractionated magnetically into three portions. First, a drum-type laboratory cobber was used to separate a highly magnetic portion, consisting mainly of free, but also containing locked, magnetite particles. The cobber tailing was then passed in two stages through a Franz isodynamic separator. The middle fraction was isolated, and, upon examination petrographically, was ascertained to be principally cummingtonite. The 100 to 150 mesh fraction of this sample was selected for the present study. It was cleaned by leaching briefly with hot, dilute HC1 and then by rinsing repeatedly with demineralized water. A ground and elutriated fraction of -5p cummingtonite was used for the electrophoretic measurements.

DEADWOOD and the Black Hills were familiar names to me from childhood, for. I had an uncle who was among the earliest eastern investors there and I used to hear of the Uncle Sam mine and its rich ore back in the eighties. The spring of my junior year at college, in 1893, brought me an offer of summer work at the Deadwood & Delaware smelter, in Deadwood, and full of the thrill of the long journey from New Jersey, I went out as chemist and stayed four months. Within a week or two of my arrival, I went through the tragic experience of seeing an associate drink cyanide by mistake and die within a few moments. I shall never forget the horror of feeling that my lack of knowledge of an antidote might be responsible for his death, but I found later that the solution he drank was so strong that nothing could have been done. A year after graduation, when I had settled down to chemical research work in New York, an offer came to go back to the smelter in Deadwood, and within a few days I was again tramping down "the Gulch" with my lunch bucket and putting in the standard assay office shift of that day, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a half-day off on Sundays. During my absence East, the D. & D. smelter had been changed from a pyritic smelter, using native pyrite, and Homestake concentrate to matte the siliceous gold ores, into a copper-matting smelter using copper ores brought from Butte, over the newly-completed Burlington rail-road. The work was interesting, and the laboratory offered many opportunities for making improvements. I remember also undertaking experiments at home on a new method of gold precipitation for the chlorination process and leasing a mine in Strawberry Gulch that promised great things, but soon petered out.

A combined process of segregation roasting-flota-tion or magnetic separation was developed to recover nickel from lateritic iron ores and oxidized nickel ores. An ore was mixed with a halide, such as sodium or calcium chloride, and a solid reductant, and roasted, whereby the nickel content was segregated out as discrete metallic particles. Either by magnetic separation, or by flotation using a sulfhydryl collector together with a heavy metal salt as an activator, the metallic nickel could be concentrated, Effects of such variables as the types and amounts of the halide and solid reductant addition and of the roasting conditions were extensively investigated. The concentration results on several types of ores from Japan, the Philippines, and New Caledonia are presented. Laterite is a residual product of rock decay in tropical and subtropical regions, and consists mainly of hydrated oxides of iron and alumina. Those derived from serpentine sometimes become enriched in nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents. Oxidized nickel ores are of the similar origin, but their nickel as well as silica contents are higher due to gamierite-type silicates. Apparently, nickel enrichment is more pronounced in the transition region between the surface layer of iron laterite and the underlying serpentine. Iron laterites often contain over 50% iron, and their reserve is reported to exceed 22 billion tons, corresponding approximately to 20% of the world iron ore reserve.1 It is readily apparent, therefore, why the iron laterites have attracted much attention of the steel industry as a potential source of iron ores. Numerous attempts to remove nickel and chromium as byproducts, have been reported in literature.' Worldwide discoveries of high-grade iron ore deposits in recent years have inevitably lessened the interests in iron laterites. However, in view of the tremendous potential for their gross value and supplies of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and alumina along with iron, the problem remains as a challenge. Much of the chromium in laterites is present in the form of relatively coarse particles of chromite, and various classification methods have successfully been applied for its removal.2,3 The nickel, however, is intimately associated with limonite, and ordinary concentration techniques are totally ineffective. Much attention has, therefore, been given to hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical means. Yet, all the known processes appear to have limitations either economically or for the use of products as iron raw materials due to a high residual content of nickel. Some attempts have been made to pre-roast laterites or oxidized nickel ores, particularly with sulfidizing agents, and to remove nickel either by magnetic separation,' or by flotation.4 It is apparent that any such concentration process would require grain growth of nickel during roasting for effective separation. Oxidized copper ores are reported to be concentrated by the segregation roasting-flotation process,5 in which the ores are roasted with a chloridizing agent and a carbonaceous reductant in order to promote the growth of metallic copper through repeated cycles of copper chloride volatilization and its reduction on the solid reductant surfaces. Examination of a vapor pressure-temperature diagram of various metal chlorides indicates that a separation of nickel from iron may be effected by a similar process. In fact, the segregation roasting of laterites was reported to increase the extraction of nickel by the ammonia leach process, as compared to the ordinary reduction roasting.6 In the present article some of the preliminary experimental results of the segregation roasting, followed by either flotation or magnetic separation, on laterites and oxidized nickel ores are reported. The effects of various parameters in the roasting as well as in the concentration steps are discussed. MATERIALS AND METHODS An oxidized nickel ore from Thio, New Caledonia, and three laterites from Homonhon, the Philippines, Wakasa and Miyagawa, Japan, were selected for the

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE NEW YORK SECTION - The annual meeting of the New York Section was held at the Machinery Club, May 7. While the dinner, at which fifty attended, was in progress, the names of the nominees for next year's officers were posted. The result of the election was as follows: Chairman, E. P. Mathewson; vice-chairmen, William Y. Westervelt, R. M. Atwater, Jr.; treasurer, Wilber Judson; executive committeemen, Lucius W. Mayer, Edwin S. Berry. The subject for the evening was "Organization and Campaign in France of the 27th Engineers." Colonel O. B. Perry described the many difficulties surmounted, for it was necessary to work with untrained men ALLEN H. ROGERS WALTER S. He described the unusually fine character and physique of his officers, which made it possible to make the untrained men most efficient. He described in some detail the work of building bridges over the Meuse River and the bringing up of supplies to the first army base, in particular at the Argonne-Meuse sector; General Pershing gave a personal commendation of the work undertaken by this regiment. The Colonel described the methods of operating the transportation of ammunition and supplies to the "army dumps," by which at the time of signing the armistice there had been brought up 600,000 tons of equipment for use in the projected campaigns. An interesting item was that 3,600,000 sand bags had been provided, in case the Germans should be able to turn the line of the American troops. Captain Edwin S. Berry described the methods of sending materials to the front lines and gave figures to indicate the huge quantities required, adding that the order of preference was troops, ammunition, food, and engineers' supplies. President Raymond called the meeting to order, and introduced Mr. Abram S. Hewitt, who welcomed the Institute to New York. President Raymond, in behalf of the Institute, replied. The President then read the following report of the Council for the past year. The Council respectfully report that the American Institute of Mining Engineers has held four meetings-at Wilkes-Barre, Bethlehem, Troy, and Philadelphia, respectively-all of which have been well attended, and socially and professionally most successful. The proceedings of these meetings having been published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and sent to all members and associates, are sufficiently well known. Forty-four papers, by twenty-six authors, have been read. These papers embrace s wide range of subjects, and prove the practical character of the proceedings of the Institute. The finances are in a satisfactory condition. By the report of the Treasurer it appears that $1290.10 have been received, $519.90 expended, and that $770.20 now remains in the treasury exclusive of fees for 1872. This fund, it is hoped, will be so increased by voluntary subscriptions as to enable us before long to issue s volume of our most important transactions in a permanent form. The Council has made a favorable arrangement with the Scientific Publishing Company, publishing the Engineering and Mining Journal, by which that journal became the organ of the Institute for the first publication of the proceedings, papers, and notices to members. This arrangement it is proposed to continue through the present year unless the Institute shall otherwise direct. It is not intended to supersede the publication of an annual or occasional volume, but to maintain an interest in the Institute, and to serve the convenience of members while our funds do not permit s more ambitious publication.

THE dynamometer herein described is a modification of the one invented by Mr. Samuel Batchelder, of Boston, nearly forty years ago, a description of which may be found in the Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1843, vol. xxxii,.p. 277, and in the Scientific American of August 31st, 1878. The modification consists in providing a method of making an automatic record, and of indicating more minute variations of the power transmitted. The improved dynamometer was designed by the writer in 1877, and was built a few months since by the Class of 1879 of the Stevens Institute of Technology. The accompanying cut, taken from the Annual Announcement of the Stevens Institute, represents the dynamometer without the recording attachment. It consists, as shown, of two stout cast-iron frames, held together by bolts in bearings, in the top of which frames run two shafts, each carrying a pulley at its outer end and a bevel gear-wheel of 45' at its inner end. One of these shafts is the driving-shaft, connected by belt to the engine or other prime mover; the other is the driven shaft, connected by belt to the machine driven. The power is transmitted from one shaft to the other through two other bevel-wheels of 45' gearing with the first, the shaft common to them and on which they run freely being at right angles to the axis of the two shafts first mentioned, and carrying at one extremity a heavy pendulum. The bevel-wheels being connected, as shown, and the power being applied to the driving-wheel, the two intermediate wheels with their common shaft have a tendency to revolve around the driving-axis, which tendency is a measure of the force transmitted, and is resisted by the moment of the weight of the pendulum. In the Batchelder dynamometer the four bevel-wheels and their shafts are used, but
