Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. The Hail Creek coking coal deposits are situated in Central Queensland, inland from the port of Mackay. A joint venture of Australian and Japanese companies has been formed to examine the feasibility of developing these deposits for sale on the overseas markets. The project envisaged involves large scale mining operations and on site benefic- iation to wash the coal to marketable quality. Infrastructure items include a 140 kilometre railway to the coast, a port facility, and at Ilail Creek, power and water supplies, roads and communications, and accommodation for a substantial workforce. The need for town development and the responsibility for the development are established. The town planning implications of coal production at the rate of five million long tons of washed coal per annum from open cut and underground mines are considered. A procedure for estimating the size of the town is expounded and the town size is determined. The factors influencing site selection are explained and a site is suggested. A method of designing the town is described and comments are made on developmental aspects. Spaciousness and preservation featuring the natural environment will be the theme of the town development.

The basic issues of education for the mineral industry which emerge from experience and from a study of relevant literature are presented with the object of promoting. discussion. The subject is considered primarily from the university point of view and relates more to the disciplines of mining and mineral processing than to geology or perhaps metall- urgy, but the conclusions have wider implic- ations. Continuing education, being the subject of a separate paper, is only briefly discussed. The important and particularly relevant training and industry role of the technician engineer and technician are not considered.

To follow the development of the central crushing plant it is necessary briefly to outline the history of the Lake View and Star Limited. This Company, when first constituted, took over the properties of the Lake View Consols, Hannan's Star, and Chaffers Gold Mines.The Company then treated the ore won from these leases at two dry crushing, all-roasting plants, situated adjacent to each other on the site of the present Chaffers Treatment Plant that handles all the ore won by the Lake View and Star Ltd.SUbsequent to the initial union of the three companies mentioned, the Ivanhoe Gold Corporation and the Golden Horse Shoe Ltd. were absorbed. Still later, and after the original crushing plant was erected, the Associated Gold Mines of Australia were purchased.A very extensive development policy was adopted by the Company's management in the late 1920's, and as the underground programme progressed, it became eVident that a large treatment plant would be required. The Mount Charlotte gold mine is located 0.75 km east of the General Post Office in Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie WA and about 3.5 km north of the Fimiston Operations on the famous Golden Mile.Mechanised underground bulk-mining at Mount Charlotte has been in continuous operation since 1963. For the 30-year period ending December 1992, the mine produced 22 million tonnes (Mt) of ore for a recovery of 2.73 million ounces. During 1991/92, the mine produced 1.53 Mt of ore at a head grade of 3.15 gramshonne (g/t) for a recovery of 135 822 ounces.The principal ore source at Mount Charlotte has been the Charlotte Orebody which is now largely mined out. Since 1990, approximately 75 per cent of production has been sourced from the Reward Orebodies. The Charlotte Orebody was a relatively homogeneous quartz stockwork with simple geometry and average bulked grades in the range of 4.0 to 5.5 g/t. This is in contrast to the Reward Orebodies and the more recently defined Charlotte Deeps and Maritana Stockworks, which have complex grade distribution and geometry with lower average bulked grades (2 to 4 g/t). The lower grades are principally due to the decreased density and volume of stockwork venation and related vein halo alteration. Typically, these stockworks comprise a patchy mosaic of quartz veins and vein swarms, with irregular distribution and geometry within the quartz gabbro host rock.

The Kangiara mine is located within the Middle to Upper Silurian Hawkins Volcanics of the Douro Group near Yass, New South Wales. The deposit is a po1ymetallic type within a rhyolitic tuff.The ore minerals comprise pyrite, sphalerite, botryoidal sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, marcasite, tetrahedrite, bismuthinite, bismuth, silver, electrum, chalcocite, covellite, and digenite. The gangue minerals are quartz, barite, calcite, and the host rock. Locally sericite occurs.Several distinct ore types can be recognized, mainly on the basis of their macroscopic textural appearance, and it is inferred from these general features that the mineralization had a submarine volcanic-sedimentary origin similar to that of the Kuroko deposits in Japan.

The Lihir Gold Mine, in Papua New Guinea, is a large open pit operation within an active geothermal system inside a collapsed volcanic crater. This unique setting has a big impact on the mine operation because of the occurrence of geothermal hazards. The system for managing geothermal hazards that has been developed by Lihir Gold Mine is a pioneering effort that can be applied to future mine discoveries in a similar environment. The controls are integral to the mining operations and allow mining to proceed whereas without them mining could not be considered. Truck and shovel productivities in conventional open pit operations are constrained by diggability, equipment availabilities and utilisation. At Lihir, additional constraints are in the form of 100 m exclusion zones around working shovels and 50 m exclusion zones around working drills. Given that the mine has seven large digging units and six drills, this amounts to a lot of area that excludes the presence of people on the ground. So how are the necessary work like grade control, survey, blasthole loading, and in-pit maintenance performed safely to achieve production targets? The answer is in the highly specialised procedures that have been developed that utilise geological, geothermal and geotechnical knowledge to predict problem areas and also deal with the organisation of movement in the pit for people and mining equipment. This paper will detail how scheduled material movement can be maintained despite the challenging conditions faced at Lihir Gold Mine.

The Tom, East and West zone, stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag deposits at Macmillan Pass, Yukon, Canada were discovered by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Ltd prospectors in 1951. Further exploration, including two phases of underground exploration produced an HBM&S calculated reserve of 9.28 Mt of 7.5 per cent Pb, 6.2 per cent Zn and 69.4 g/T Ag for these zones. Cominco Ltd optioned the property in 1988. Deep, surface drilling extended the West and Southeast zones downward 200 - 300 m, indicating an additional potential resource of several million tonnes of good grade. The magnitude of the controlling syndepositional setting suggests that mineralisation continues to greater depth but with increased drilling and possibly mining costs. The 30 x 60 km Macmillan Fold belt trends WNW across the NW Selwyn Basin and Cordilleran trend. Within the fold belt, the Central Block - a complex, rift controlled basin of Devonian siliciclastics, hosts seven zones of Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation clustered about four hydrothermal centres. The centres, distributed over 24 km, are coincident with small syndepositionally active structural sub-basins. The Tom deposits, in one such sub-basin, are localised by a third order structure consisting of two palaeobathymetric troughs flanking a syndepositional horst. This structure caused drastic facies and thickness changes over 600 metres of strata and focussed the venting of hydrothermal fluids through permeable conglomerates in the horst and its flanking growth faults. Mineral facies are zoned, with Pb-Ag contents rapidly diminishing outward from the vent resulting in restricted areas of high grade Pb-Zn-Ag-Ba ore within more extensive, sub-economic, Ba-Zn mineralisation. Widespread iron carbonate alteration of the footwall and high Si, B and Zn values in the hangingwall 'fingerprint' the deposit and along with the distinct facies variations provide aids to exploring the Tom and like deposits.

Rock surface roughness plays an important role in excavation engineering projects and applications related to surface support structures, such as shotcrete and thin-sprayed liner (TSL). The morphology of the substrate affects the mechanical behaviour at the interface significantly. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify the roughness to investigate the relationship between roughness and mechanical properties. The joint roughness coefficient (JRC) proposed by Barton and Choubey (1977) is widely used in practice. It initially estimated the roughness by comparing it to 10 standard profiles visually. However, this method has lots of limitations, it is not only subjective but also a two-dimensional parameter with a small lab scale (Beer, 2002). The subsequent research on JRC, from visual comparison with Barton’s standard profiles to measuring the roughness with a profilometer (Weissbach, 1978; Alameda-Hernández et al, 2014). Then, 2D profiles or 3D surfaces by different technologies with higher resolution and accuracy, such as 3D laser or optical scanners (Fardin, 2004; Jiang, 2020, 2021). These 3D scanners are expensive and only suitable for laboratory scales. LiDAR scanners (Lato, 2009; Aubertin, 2022) have been applied in industrial size, but it is difficult to achieve a millimetre-level accuracy, which is mostly used to detect the thickness of shotcrete in practice. Thus, finding a cost-effective surface roughness measurement method with high accuracy is necessary. Photogrammetry is another method to digitalise the roughness of the surface. Similar to 3D scanners, photogrammetry also generates the point cloud of the objective surface and then reconstructs the 3D model of the objects. 3D reconstruction technology is a trendy technology in recent years. The structure from motion (SfM) algorithm (Westoby, 2012) to rebuild the 3D model with a flexible workflow, aligning photos, building dense point cloud, mesh and texture, which has been proved that can rebuild an accurate model in variable fields.

The paper, one of two papers on the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling conference, describes documentation, tendering and construction aspects.Tender documents were written to reduce the risk taken by the contractor. Details of tenders received are analysed and the changing industrial situation at that time described.Construction aspects covered include mobilisation, major equipment, tunnelling equipment and manning. Program and progress are reported including industrial relations and advance rates for Mitsui-Miike S-200 and S-65 roadheaders. Cycle times and performance in terms of cutting rate and pick wear are provided for the roadheaders.

This paper, one of two written about the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling Conference, 1993, describes the design and monitoring aspects of the railway tunnels built between Central Station and Brunswick Street Station.The design was mainly influenced by the need to minimise settlement of buildings above the route. Traditionally trucks have dominated haulage in open pit mines. Only recently have conveyors begun to be used in the long haul and high lift duties of surface mines. Steep angle conveyors are proven versatile systems for elevating or lowering materials continuously at steep angles to 90¦. This paper describes the design of a bucket-type steep angle conveyor that was developed as a joint research project between the Western Australian School of Mines and the Maanshan Institute of Mining Research in China. The steep angle conveyor can be used as a viable option for transporting blocky ore from open pit mines. A pilot conveyor was constructed and tested to determine its technical and operational feasibility. Furthermore, a computer model based on Matlab mathematical modelling software was developed to simulate the performance of the pilot conveyor. The model enabled to determine the design parameters of industry-scale conveyors to yield satisfactory performance. These conveyors become very cost-effective for those mines having large mine lives and depths greater than about 500 metres.

The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.

This paper provides a brief historical background to the approximately 12-year project that led to the revision of rope selection factors in the South African regulations, thus providing the ability to hoist economical payloads from single lift ultra-deep shafts. The efforts over the past 20 years have led to the revision of the legislation pertaining to rope selection factors, the redesign of rope constructions to meet the required duties associated with ultra-deep shafts, codes of practice for the design, operation and maintenance of winding plants, and a code of practice for the condition assessment of winder ropes. As a consequence the Moab Khotsong ultra-deep hoisting system could be developed and installed, with the assurance of predictable performance. Access to deep orebodies by means of single lift, ultra-deep shafts has a critical impact on the life cycle costs and efficiencies of ultra-deep mining complexes. A brief description of the main components of the hoisting system at Moab Khotsong is presented. An in-depth review of the development process applied to ensure a stable, safe and cost-effective rope construction for the ultra-deep Moab Khotsong shaft follows. The paper concludes with an overview of the experiences gained during the installation and commissioning phases of the winder, as well as operational and maintenance issues.

Australia has been an important producer of zinc minerals and metal for many years.Late in the last century Edgar A. Ashcroft, a versatile and enterprising electrical engineer proposed the treatment of zinc rich ores by roasting, followed by leaching to extract zinc, purification of the solution and electrolysis of the purified solution to produce zinc. Residues from the leaching operation were to be smelted in a lead blast furnace to recover lead, silver and gold.Ashcroft (1897-98) and (1898) has.given us a most interesting record of the attempts made at the Sulphide Corporation's plant at Cockle Creek near Newcastle, NSW, to put his ideas into practice. In spite of the best efforts of all concerned, including the use of electrolysis of aqueous chlorides and sulphates, zinc could not be deposited consistently and the project failed although lead smelting continued until 1922 (Woodward, 1965, p. 158). Based on later experience with Broken Hill materials the presence of undetected cobalt in the solutions was the likely cause of the inability to deposit zinc (Kirk and Othmer, 1956).

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.

This paper introduces a new, safer bulk emulsion loading system for underground mining operations. The features and benefits of the equipment, along with the use of Dyno Nobel Inc patented gassed emulsion technology, is summarised in the application of a stope blast with very difficult and complex ground conditions. The paper describes methods used to optimise the amount of energy required to break the ore while protecting the integrity of the surrounding backfilled pillar.

Dr David Dekker discussed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to automation, the infrastructure required to support automation, and selecting the equipment for automation. Dekker stressed that automation involves a number of technologies. The mining industry is currently about part-way through the evolutionary process of achieving a fully integrated automation system. He pointed out that the final stages require parallel development of infrastructure such as mine communications. Technologies required for automation Automation systems consist of three parts: the gathering of information, the processing of that information, and taking action.

Surface disposal of mining processing wastes is usually perceived as an undesirable consequence of meeting societyÆs needs for metals and minerals. Environmental disasters associated with the discharge or storage of such wastes, though infrequent, can have very damaging consequences for the environment and the industry. Reducing or eliminating the potential for such events may be achieved by placing some or all of these processing wastes back into the voids created by the mining operations. Processing operations may limit or enhance the opportunities for using tailings and other waste products as a backfill material. Backfilling is a truly multi-disciplinary process and requires the informed involvement of mining, metallurgical, engineering and environmental specialists. This paper describes the range of fill types currently being used in Australian mines, particularly those utilising processing wastes as constituents. It focuses on how processing operations can affect the suitability of these materials for the various types of fill, the resulting fill properties, fill performance and costs.

This has facilitated the economic optimisation of the resource. Optimisation has been achieved by the timely collection and presentation of data and the use of these data to reduce costs and improve planning procedures.In particular the following issues have been addressed:ò the reduction of the impact of the mining activity on the adjacent urban population centre,ò implementation of safety procedures for mining through underground voids,ò the determination of the optimum bench height and mining method for ore production benches and blast design. This system is fundamentally based on maintaining a high degree of selectivity while achieving a balance of relatively low unit operating costs,ò assessment of the comparable benefits of contractor versus owner operated earth moving equipment, andò the development of effective ore body models, production reconciliation and the long term mine planning procedures to facilitate effective strategic planning.
