High aluminium steel is a promising advanced steel known for its exception properties and holds significant economic and strategic importance. However, the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 based slag with high alumina content reacts vigorously with alumina refractories during the smelting process at high temperature, seriously affecting the safe and efficient production of furnaces and resulting in the formation of Al2O3-MgO non-metallic inclusions within the molten steel. This is a bottleneck problem for high-quality steel refining, and the key reaction path during the corrosion remains unclear. The dissolution reaction mechanism of alumina refractories in high alumina CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags under a weak static magnetic field was investigated in this work, using high temperature laser confocal microscopy and in situ radiation spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the interaction between the high alumina slags and the alumina refractories is governed by free radical reactions. The dissolution of alumina forms AlO and AlO2 radicals. The reaction rate increases with the C/S ratio of the slag due to its low polymerisation. The reaction between non-bridging oxygen and AlO2 free radicals accelerates the generation of AlO and O2ꞏ- radicals. The reaction layer composed of calcium aluminate is formed through the recombination of AlO, Caꞏ+ and O2ꞏ- radicals. The weak static magnetic field induces the Zeeman splitting of free radical pairs and intersystem crossing occurs, promoting the formation of triplet free radical pairs through the hyper-fine coupling effect. The reaction can be significantly inhibited as the triplet free radical pair does not meet Pauli’s incompatibility principle. This discovery perfects the structure theory of molten slags with radicals and provides supplement to the design of the highly slag-resistant refractories, and provides the theoretical basis for the development of external field protection technologies for high-quality steel refining.

The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.

The effects of changes in sintering bed height, coke fuel, suction and basicity on sinter productivity, physical strength and mineralogy were determined. It was found that, for a given iron ore, there is a narrow -coke range which maximises sinter strength, irrespective of bed height (in the range 300 to 500 mm) or basicity (in the range 1.2 to 2.2). Increases in bed height, at a constant coke level, improved the physical strength of the sinter. Productivity increases were obtained by increasing the sintering suction but, at coke levels other than the optimum, these *ere somewhat offset by the decrease in sinter physical strength. At basicities higher than 1.2 (i.e. 1.6, 1.8 and 2.2) there was a narrowing of'the size range of product sinter, with a decrease in the percentage of top size material, and a decrease in the amount of fines produced. Changes in coke, bed height and basicity exert major effects on sinter mineralogy, while the Nagoya index was mainly influenced by cote and bed height Changes.

A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

The treatment of slimes has of late years been the chief difficulty in connection with cyanide work, in which much time and money has been spent in endeavouring to find a practical solution of this problem.The processes at present in use are:-1. Filter pressing, as practised in Western Australia.2. Decantation, as practised in South Africa.Filter pressing after apitation affords a ready and efficient means of separating the gold bearing solution from the slimes and admits a perfect washing thus ensuring a high extraction but the very high working costs forbids its application except on high grade material, the chief items being the necessary large amount of labour, compressed air, and general upkeep, none of which can be materially reduced. The decantation method has the ad vantage of low working cost but on the other hand the low extraction obtained, due to imperfect washing, the length of time occupied in' the treatment, and the enormous bulk of solutions to be handled, are serious disadvantages.In either process it is absolutely necessary to obtain a perfectly clean solution before starting the gold precipitation by zinc, which is a source of much trouble. Also the high first cost of installing either plant is such that they can only be adopted on mines with very large working capital.

Mining regulatory authorities worldwide mandate frequent inspection of winder ropes used in shaft-equipped underground mines and ski lifts. Visual inspections are effective in identifying and assessing the type and severity of damage found in the exterior of the rope. In addition, electromagnetic or permanent magnet-based methods are used to identify broken wires, corrosion damage and other anomalies that occur anywhere within the core of wire ropes made of steel, which is a ferromagnetic material. The magnetic methods yield the loss of metallic area due to wire breaks and other damage in the ropeÆs section as well as local flaws that give rise to discontinuities in the magnetic field. The quantitative measurement of the loss of metallic area is indirectly related to the loss of breaking strength that is commonly used as a rope discard criterion. The ropes used in a mine winder in the Goldfields of Western Australia are inspected using Meraster 120B permanent magnet-based rope tester and their condition is assessed against published discard criteria.

In the recent years several new blasting technologies have come into use in surface mines. Electronic initiation, low-density emulsion explosives and modelling software are in regular use throughout the world. In Australia, these new technologies have achieved significant application, largely in open cut coal mines where more than 20 per cent of blasting is now conducted with electronic initiation systems. These new techniques have contributed to the vast improvement in blasting outcomes evidenced by increased recovery of saleable product and faster excavation rates. In large surface mines, OricaÆs unique combination of electronic initiation systems, bulk emulsion explosives and modelling software can be harnessed to target critical value outcomes. This includes targeting better fragmentation, increased ore uncovery rates and better wall stability û all adding to improved mining operation profitability. Orica Mining Services have combined these technologies into a set of offerings called Blast Based Services (BBSÖ). The paper describes applications of these new technologies and possible benefits in large surface mines.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. In mineral asset valuation the use of any valuation method requires the input of competent and independent technical professionals. A resource valuation must be as transparent as possible to allow others to assess the validity of their underlying assumptions. Materiality is a dominant factor in all valuations and a valuer should set out the basis for the subjective decisions made in this regard. Any valuation methodology must comply with the requirements of the law, practice notes and guidelines issued by the various relevant authorities and professional bodies. The valuation methodology chosen to value a mineral asset depends upon the amount of data available on that asset and the reliance that can be placed upon those data. Mineral assets generally fall into one of three broad categories, depending upon their state of development, ie whether they are at the exploration, development or operating stage. Naturally there are transition phases. Hence, there are ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects; Pre-Development Projects and Developing Mines; and Operating Mines. The features of each of these mineral asset status categories are described, mainly in terms of the confidence in the contained identified Resources/ Reserves. The various subjective methodologies available for the valuation of ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects -are specifically reviewed. The pitfalls in adopting a ""recipe"" approach are noted. It is the author's view that the Expected Value Method (based on the probability adjustment of the output of a Discounted Cash Flow/ Net Present Value model) has little application in the valuation of exploration mineral assets, so it is only briefly addressed. The methodologies reviewed are listed below. ò Multiple of Exploration Expenditure Method (expenditure based). ò Joint Venture Terms Method (expenditure based). ò Geoscience Rating Methods (eg Kilburn - area based). ò Comparable Market Value Method (real estate based). ò Rules of Thumb (eg $/Resource or production unit; % of in situ value). Some recent Prospectuses are used to provide examples of their misinterpretation and misapplication.

Current control practice is reviewed for agglomeration processes, including pelletising, sintering and induration; and for smelting processes, including blast and reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting, the intensive bath smelting processes together with converting. The importance of sensors for on-line control and the status of mathematical modelling is discussed.Future progress in automatic control will require improved component specific sensors and the use of validated mathematical models running in parallel with the process. The possibilities in both these areas are reviewed in light of the trends towards more intensive smelting processes.

North Stradbroke Island is a large sand mass offshore from south east Queensland. Dredging for mineral sands commenced there in 1956 and the rehabilitation discussed in this paper was commenced in 1967. The frontal dunes have a long history of instability, with little vegetation prior to mining. Re-establishment of the naturally stable contours is essential, and their rehab- ilitation is described. Vegetated high dunes present different problems requiring attention to regeneration of the native species. Methods developed over the past eight years are proving successful.,

Metallurgical effort is directed largely at the flotation performance of middling streams and current strategies are discussed. You wouldnÆt start excavating before testing core samples, so why would you approve a project plan before all factors have been identified, reviewed and addressed? Even a champion sports team made up of the best players canÆt produce optimal results without a well understood and agreed game plan. Could an F1 racing team produce their outstanding performance without rigorous evaluation and testing of the factors for successful performance? Why would we expect a capital works project team to be able to get it right without an understanding and an involvement in setting and implementing the overall game plan and without an understanding of all stakeholder requirements? For International PowerÆs Hazelwood (IPRH) mine in Victoria, the challenge was development and delivery of a 40 year mine plan, ultimately involving relocation of existing mine operations into an adjacent new coal field, land acquisitions and major environmental and other approvals to allow diversion of three streams, a highway, an Over Dimension route and other infrastructure in a political and environmentally sensitive atmosphere. The lessons from International Power HazelwoodÆs (IPRH) experience are: that the clear set of project principles and guiding values ensured delivery of a robust plan; a robust plan can withstand significant change; and value management (VM) played an important role in providing assurance, to all, that the plan was sound at both the strategic and micro levels. This Hazelwood mine project included five major VM workshops. The first was a critical review process in addition to design and cost reviews. This VM workshop was used to analyse, at a high level, the preferred coal mining sequence and design concepts, together with the interaction between design elements, risks and costs. In addition to this, the workshop provided an agreed common pathway for all downstream decisions. A second VM study was conducted to ensure that the proposed plan and design for relocation of the conveying systems from the existing mine into the new field were planned for optimum achievement from a whole of life cost, time, operational and maintenance perspective, plus the logistics of continuing operations while relocating assets. A third study followed to review the Conveyor Transfer Alliance and review functional design. A fourth VM study workshop was formed at the start of Phase 2 Alliance to ensure that the best value for money was being achieved through the current design, schedule and project arrangements and that all interfaces between parties had been reviewed and responsibilities were clear and understood. Other studies are outlined later in this paper. This paper details the evaluation criteria and processes used in the project evaluation that led to the WestField Mine Development.

The present study concerns a new type of mixer-settler unit where coalescence is promoted by means of the phase inversion method (MSPI). Using two different systems (alkaline etching solution û LIX 54 in kerosene and acidic aqueous solution û LIX 984 in kerosene) the influence of the total flowrate, the A/O phase ratio and the hydrodynamic conditions in the nozzles of the scattering device on the extraction and separation efficiencies are studied. Two modes of operation are clearly outlined and a theoretical model predicting the separation efficiency is proposed and compared to experimental results. A comparison between mixer-settlers with classic decanters and the MSPI unit has demonstrated the advantages of the latter where throughputs in the range 20 -25 m3.m-2h-1 can be easily realised.

The Wambo Rail Spur located near Singleton, New South Wales, Australia, runs for approximately 14 km linking the Mt Thorley rail loop and the Wambo Coal Mine. The project involves a 260 m long tunnel in weathered sedimentary and intrusive materials. The tunnel has a low cover and runs under a main highway. This second paper on the project looks into one aspect of the tunnel in detail: the use of shotcrete arch as the primary support for part of the tunnel excavation. The use of shotcrete instead of steel arch, formulation of the material specification, construction sequencing, installation at the excavated face and material testing for verification related to this facet of the project will be discussed in this paper. The tunnel opened in April 2006, and two years on, we briefly reflect on the impact of this design decision on the overall project.

A 250 tons per day ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching plant is now being operated by Samin Limited, to extract copper from the oxidised ores at the Burra mine. This forms the first stage of a plant, which will eventually have a capacity in excess of 1,000 tons per day. The article reviews the history of the mines at Burra and the metallurgical studies which have been undertaken since the old mines closed in 1917, in an endeavour to recover the copper from the low-grade deposits left by the original miners. The reasons why an ammonia leaching process was selected instead of the conventional flotation or acid leaching methods are discussed. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the plant and the basis on which it was designed.

This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.
