The Endeavor Mine, located to the north of Cobar, New South Wales, was purchased by CBH Resources Pty Ltd in September 2003. The operation has been producing lead and zinc concentrate continuously for over twenty-three years. In 2004, a water management program was instigated to improve the raw water use efficiency of the mining operation. The water management program involved the establishment of a Water Management Committee, a review and quantification of water use across the site, investigation and implementation of efficient water use practices, and workforce awareness training. The program has seen the amount of water used per tonne of ore milled reduced from an average of 1.08 kL/t in the March 2004 quarter, to 0.68 kL/t in the March 2005 quarter. This paper outlines the Endeavor Mine water management program and may serve as a model for other operations that are planning to improve their water use efficiency.

The first step in the mining and processing of nearly any mineral ore is comminution. Since the oil embargo of 1979, the mining companies have been striving to reduce energy consumption and costs. The first serious step was the introduction of in-pit crushing in the early 1980s. With in-pit crushing accepted as a standard design mode, the energy saving emphasis turned to comminution practices. A great deal of attention has been focused on blasting and grinding. The one step that has not been addressed is the primary crusher. This paper will address the opportunities for comminution improvement through optimisation of the primary crusher.

Geophysical anomalies at Puhipuhi reflect both diverse lithologies and different degrees of hydrothermal alteration. Most significant is a strong negative gravity anomaly (up to 50 g.u.), encompassing but extending beyond areas of known alteration, which is modelled as a deep zone (up to 3 km) of reduced density in the host greywacke basement. This zone, interpreted as being due to alteration (at least in part), closely correlates with the extent of overlying basalt flows. The gravity data indicate that the most intense alteration occurs below the basalts and correlates with the location of previously inferred hydrothermal upflow zones. These observations suggest that the basalt may have acted as a cap rock to a mineralising geothermal system. Aeromagnetic data identify highly variable but typically low magnetisations in the basalts which suggests that alteration may have been contemporaneous with volcanism. These geophysical data at Puhipuhi confirm the locations of centres of known alteration and suggest potential exploration targets below the basalt cap where there is no surface manifestation of alteration. Further implications of these results are discussed in Locke et al. (1999).

A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.

A critical concern of any mining company today is its relationship with the different stakeholder groups impacted by the operational activity û communities, unions, vendors, local partners and competitors, local and federal governments, interest groups and non-government organisations. What ten years ago would have gone unnoticed, now, and even more so in the future, can drastically impact the profitability and even existence of a mining operation. This paper describes the development and delivery of a new paradigm for creating effective external stakeholder relationships. We report on the actual measurable results of an integrated and highly complex initiative led by Lonmin Plc (Lonmin) and Landmark Education Business Development (LEBD) that significantly altered the nature of the relationship with the stakeholders. Given the nature of the long-term investment required in a mining operation, any breakdowns or surprises in its relationship with external stakeholders brings with it the potential for major loss. The transformation of executive and senior management and community leadership was required to enable them to be effective in managing this complex set of circumstances.

There is an established need for an inflow of foreign capital if New Zealand is to meet projected growth rates. The Government recognises this and encourages capital inflows especially where there are allied economic benefits such as the access to specialised know-how or export markets. The Government has promulgated certain Regulations which are administered by the Reserve Bank. Under the Capital Issues (Overseas) Regulations 1965, consent is required before any company incorporated overseas can commence business in New Zealand or before an overseas person can borrow or raise any money in New Zealand. A New Zealand company is deemed to be an overseas person if more than 25% of the voting power is held by non-residents. In terms of current policy, overseas companies are permitted to borrow in New Zealand only a limited amount of working capital and some longer term capital calculated on the ratio that their New Zealand owned equity capital bears to their overseas owned equity capital. Wholly owned overseas companies are expected to bring all of their Fixed term capital from overseas.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

This paper presents an iterative net present value (NPV) maximisation method to determine the optimum surface to underground transition depth for an orebody to be mined by multiple open pits and an underground mine. The determination of transition depth from open pit to underground mining is based on global production scheduling optimisation of open pit and underground mines using mixed integer linear programming. The method is applied to a case study coming from a gold mining complex with six open pits and a large underground mine using longhole open stoping. The results indicate potential improvements of the NPV of global operations when compared to the traditional techniques based on independently optimised open pit first, followed by underground mining.CITATION:Dagdelen, K and Traore, I, 2014. Disastrous earthquakes are a reality on the Australiancontinent. Unfortunately it has taken the fatal 1989 New-castle earthquake to demonstrate to all Australians that we do not reside on a "stable continent". While the world accepts the potential of plate tectonics and its associated plate margin earthquakes, particularly around the active Pacific Rim, the realisation of devastating intra-plate, or continental, earthquakes is only now beginning to take effect. The 1989 Newcastle earthquake provides many lessons on which to further fundamental earthquake research and the applications to the future welfare of human civilisation. To mitigate the earthquake hazard in relation to the devastation to life, property and industry, research must be undertaken with the resulting informa-tion to be included in the nation's disaster management programs. The earthquake hazard is everpresent in east-ern Australia and the major step in its quantification is a more realistic determination of earthquake risk estimates through an integrated study of seismology, engineering, insurance and sociology.

A company tax rate based on profitability return, or as more commonly expressed, a resource rent taxation scheme has been intro- duced at various stages in the past by both Australian state and commonwealth governments. At present a number of overseas countries are applying this form of legislation to the taxing of sections of their mining industries. Within this study, ways in which this type of tax has been used are examined. The form in which the tax can be applied varies. 1. It can be selectively or universally applied. 2. The base on which economic return is calculated can be selected in a number of ways. 3. It can start operating only when high profit levels exist, or alternatively be the basis of a total taxation scheme. The implication for the Australian mining industry of the introduction of different types of resource rent taxation schemes is assessed within the context of previously enacted systems.

A good blending system is one that ensures that a plant can cope with the amount of grade variation that it will encounter. Prediction of amounts of variation that will be encountered on time or tonnage scales that are important should be regarded as an essential part of the planning of mines and plants. In some cases, the natural amount of grade variation when ore is mined and handled in the cheapest way will be acceptable. In other cases, it is necessary to understand the effects that various ore-handling processes have on amounts of grade variation at various scales and to design a blending system with considerable care. Blending tends to matter more when plants are sensitive to many aspects of grade. It can be very difficult to find the best compromise between capital cost and the amount of grade variation. In these cases it is important that ore blending options be considered carefully as part of the planning of mines and plants. Failure to make plans that consider likely amounts of variation can be very expensive.

Deep lead mining by methods other thanconventional open-cut techniques has not been effectively employed in Australia in -the second half of this century. The reasons for this are essentially economic, and are related particularly to the labour intensive nature of the methods involved as well as the high consumption of support materials. These methods have been adapted in recent times to undertake bulk sampling programmes in deep leads. Although some consideration is given to surface-oriented hydraulic and solution mining applications, the prime function of this paper is to investigate the possible application of modern underground methods to deep lead exploitation. As deep leads are not currently being worked (with the exception of some minor operations on the Eastern seaboard), these applications remain essentially untested. They have, however, been conceptually developed following several years of small scale deep lead development. Current mineral economics, particularly with respect to gold, combined with the known extent of partially - or totally - unexploited mineralised leads demonstrates the necessity to investigate all possible means of ore extraction.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs. INTRODUCTION Tyres are a significant cost in mining. Financial theory often takes some time to penetrate industry and when it does it can result in a paradigm shift in valuations and mental models. The Black Scholes option valuation was first published in 1973, although the authors were only awarded a Nobel Prize in 1997. The valuation of real options has been applied to the oil and gas industry for some time, however it has only recently been more widely applied to the non-oil, mineral resource sector. The use of real option valuation (ROV) for the valuation of marginal and short mine life resource projects is a more useful valuation tool than the conventional DCF, NPV valuation tool. The application of ROV has major implications for corporate strategy. It generally favours equity over debt funding and non-hedging over hedging. A retrospective assessment of the successful development of the Lennard Shelf Operations demonstrates the concepts of implementing real options and the value destruction of limiting operational flexibility through debt and hedging activities.

Mining is claimed to be unique among industries owing to its dependence on exploration for its existence, the need to operate in remote, inhospitable areas, the vast capital sums required for development, the need to pay royalties regardless of profitabil- ity, the wide swings in prices for many of its products, the finite life of each-mineral deposit, its susceptibility to criticism by environmentalists, its dependence on export markets and sensitivity to' cost and exchange rate fluctuations, the uncertainties inherent in most mining legislation, pressures to grant mineral rights to aboriginal communities and the burden of having to finance its own infrastructure. The special problems of the industry have been recognised in the income tax laws which, generally speaking, allow for the deduction of all capital expenditure before tax is payable. Notable exceptions to this rule are the absence of special deductions for mineral processing facilities and the absence of any deductions for a large part of the expenditure on ports and port towns. Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

This paper addresses project commissioning, that is, activities that culminate in the transfer of a project from the construction phase to routine plant operation. These activities should be initiated early in the engineering and design phase to ensure that the plant design is operator friendly and that construction is scheduled such that pre-operational testing and hand over to the owner occurs in a timely and cost-effective manner. For the purposes of this paper, commissioning includes all activities related to pre-operational testing, no-load testing, water commissioning, and ore commissioning. That is, all activities from construction completion to practical completion of the prime contract. This process is facilitated in numerous ways dependent on the nature of the project prime contract and the size of the project. For small lump sum projects, the contractor's responsibility may include all phases of commissioning to practical completion, whereas, a managing contractor on a complex multi-contract project may only be required to bring the project to mechanical completion and hand over to the owner for ore commissioning. In the Renison Bell area of western Tas mania, a series of Lower Cambrian quartzites, shales, carbonate beds ("dolomites"), cong- lomerates, tuffs and argillites have been folded into a broad monocline whose general strike is NW-SE, plunging slightly north and dipping NE. The downwarped eastern side of the monocline is disrupted by a steep (50-800) east dipping normal fault, known as the Bassett Structure, whose throw is in excess of 500 m. A series of flat north dipping normal faults, each with a throw of approximately 50 m, further disrupts the sequence. All major faulting was pre-mineralization. A cassiterite- bearing Devonian quartz porphyry body intrudes this Cambrian sequence 2 km south of the currently operating mine. Of economic importance is the presence of three carbonate beds in the sequence. These carbonates consist of a mixture of calcite, dolomite and siderite. The No. 1 (youngest) and No. 2 carbonate beds are each approximately 15 m thick and are separated by 20 m of hematitic conglomerates and tuffs. The No. 3 (oldest) carbonate bed is approximately 5 m thick and is separated from the No. 2 horizon by 50 m of dark grey, finely laminated shales and quart- zites. Acidic drainage has long been recognised as the largest environmental liability facing the mining industry, and to a lesser extent, the public, through abandoned mines. The Canadian Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) initiative was the first international multi-stakeholder program to develop scientifically based technologies to reduce the effect of acidic drainage. The original MEND Program extended over a nine-year time frame ending in 1997, with technology transfer activities continuing to the end of year 2000 under the MEND 2000 program. Both programs have contributed enormously to the understanding of acidic drainage and how to prevent it. MEND3, launched in 2001, intends to further this effort with a strong, research-driven program. The successes of the MEND initiative have come through the collaborative efforts of the partners, the sharing of experiences, the thorough evaluation of technologies and their incremental improvements. As a result, the knowledge base on acidic drainage has grown considerably. An international model of alliance between the various worldwide initiative involved in acidic drainage is being formalised at this conference. This global alliance will enhance technology transfer capabilities and will lead to improved environmental performance for the industry. It is through collaboration that we have achieved the most progress in environmental performance, and this formal relationship will further expand these benefits.
