"In the context of today's continuously changing world, there are many factors which must be considered when attempting to assess the ability of Canada's primary copper producers to remain competitive in the face of increasing competition in world markets. In this paper, we have attempted to document those factors that will have the greatest impact on the future viability of Canada's copper industry, and to suggest possible strategies to fully utilize whatever inherent advantages Canada may have to enhance its competitive position. Technological factors related to the efficiency of precious and by-product metals recovery, energy type and utilization efficiency, production and sale of sulphur by-products, and control of 502 emissions are given high priority in this evaluation of Canada's future needs to remain competitive. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the relative viability of hydrometallurgical versus pyrometallurgical processes for copper; to address uniquely Canadian conditions and problems. Due consideration is also given to the economic incentives required to allow Canada's copper producers to compete under anticipated world market conditions and to facilitate the continued development of Canada's copper resources. IntroductionWhen we try to assess the viability or competitiveness of any industry the bottom line is still usually, ""Can we produce a pound of product cheaper than the competition?"" Canada's copper industry is certainly no exception. However, as with most resource-based industries dependent upon exports, there are many factors which have a significant effect on the cost components which make up the total cost of producing and selling a pound of copper. It is desirable therefore to have as clear a picture as possible of the cost components, the major factors affecting them, and how they compare with the competition, particularly the third-world copper producers.In this paper we have attempted to provide a brief outlook for world copper markets and a brief overview of Canada's competitive position. We have also attempted to document those factors which will have the greatest impact on future production costs, and have suggested possible initiatives to utilize inherent Canadian advantages to enhance our competitive position. Special emphasis has been placed on technological initiatives designed to make full use of these ""advantages"", to develop superior beneficiation and extraction! refining technologies. The fair market value of an exploration property is determined by its potential to host a mineral deposit. This potential is gauged by the results of previous exploration, exploration stage, meaningful past expenditures and remaining targets that are not yet tested. Values of exploration properties can be viewed as distinct points in a three-dimensional space defined by orthogonal axes, namely: Exploration Stage (x-axis); Cumulative Expenditures (y-axis); and Property Value (z-axis). In general, these values are estimated by applying activity factors on previous exploration expenditures, e.g. an activity factor of 100% for an active property with good potential and a factor of 50% for an active property but past expenditures have not upgraded the property. At certain periods, a market factor may also be applied to reflect the activity of mineral property acquisitions. For properties that do not exhibit any exploration potential, only nominal values are applied.

A flowsheet has been developed to treat the flotation tailings from a copper mine in Mexico to recover gold and silver by cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The plant will treat ~15,000 t/day of a 60:40 blend of current flotation tailings and the mine’s historic tailings. The tailings also contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper, and the economic viability of the project is strengthened by recovering most of the copper and cyanide associated with this process. The solution and solid phases in the CIP tailings will be separated in a counter current decantation (CCD) circuit and the CCD solution overflow will be treated by a SART Process. Copper precipitates as a salable copper sulphide product in the SART Process and the cyanide that is associated with the copper complex is regenerated as free cyanide. After SART, a portion of the SART product solution will be recycled to leach to reuse the free cyanide, while the remaining solution will be used as wash water in the CCD circuit. Incorporation of the SART Process in the flowsheet allows the CIP circuit to be operated aggressively as a gold plant, which means most of the silver in solution passes through CIP to SART. Silver co-precipitates with copper in SART and is recovered very efficiently with the copper sulphide by-product. Incorporation of SART also allows the leach and CIP circuits to be operated with relatively high levels of free cyanide, which enhances silver leach kinetics and helps keep copper from loading onto the carbon in CIP. The flowsheet was developed in the laboratory and successfully demonstrated in a fully-integrated pilot plant in 2018.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, accounting for 15 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. Since methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing methane emissions can achieve considerable climate benefits over the next 25 years. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane and CH4 released to the atmosphere from gassy mines during coal extraction is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Methane (CH4) emissions from coal mining activities constitute approximately 6% of total global human-related methane emissions. Coal mines around the world have recognized that methane is a clean energy resource that can be captured and used productively. Coal mine methane (CMM) is currently utilized for power generation, natural gas pipeline injection, vehicle fuel, industrial process feed stocks, on-site mine boilers, mine heating, and home heating distribution systems. Upgrading mine degasification systems can often improve gas quality and create favorable project economics. The United States has been a leader in coal mine methane (CMM) recovery and use since the 1990?s. There are now 15 projects at active underground mines in the U.S., as well as 26 abandoned mine methane projects. Recovery and use projects at active underground U.S. mines reduced methane emissions by approximately 49 Billion cubic feet in 2010. In an exciting new development, a ventilation air methane (VAM) mitigation project at the CONSOL McElroy mine in West Virginia was installed by Verdeo. Operational since September 2012, this is the first commercial-scale VAM project in the U.S. and the project will reduce methane emissions by an estimated 920 MMCF/yr. As part of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, actual data on methane emissions from underground coal mines was collected for the first time in 2011 and reported to U.S. EPA in September 2012. The data collected will help inform stakeholders, particularly the underground coal mining industry, of CMM emission sources on public and private lands. The detailed data will also shed light on the specific sources of methane from active underground coal mines and highlight project opportunities for the U.S. coal industry. The paper will cover U.S. coal mine methane emissions, U.S. CMM utilization and destruction projects, Federal policies and State incentives for CMM capture and utilization. 2011 CMM data from the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program Subpart FF will be analyzed and compared with previous U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory estimates. Other developments, including the voluntary carbon market, will be discussed.

"The addition of sulphidic materials in the leaching of nickel laterites has several potential benefits that include improvements in the rheological behaviour of the blends, reductions in the sulphuric acid and steam requirements, sweetening of the nickel grade of the combined feed material, and the option of using a range of sulphidic materials. The current study examines the oxidative processing of 30% w/w blends of nickel concentrate and nickel laterite ore at 250oC. In particular, the viability of using low oxygen overpressures was examined for significant amounts of nickel flotation concentrate, up to 12% w/w. Further to this the impact of process water quality, in particular the presence of chloride, upon the kinetics of extraction and the mineralogy of the residue were also investigated. This paper will present the results of preliminary work in this area.INTRODUCTIONThe use of sulphidic ore as a source of sulphuric acid during oxidative hydrometallurgical processing is not a novel idea and can be traced back over forty years (Seidel & Fitzhugh, 1968). A series of patents pertaining to application of this approach for laterite ores can be subsequently found (O’Neill, 1973; Opratko et al., 1974; Rodriguez, 2008a, 2008b; O’Callaghan, 2010; Liu et al., 2011) and a few of articles containing published data (Ferron & Fleming, 2004; Quinn et al., 2009). The use of pyrrhotite tailings as a source of sulphuric acid has also been employed for the leaching of converter slags (Perederiy et al., 2011).It is known that hydrometallurgical operations such as the HPAL plant at Murrin Murrin have added small amounts of sulphides as either transitional (mixed sulphide/oxide) ore or non-smeltable concentrate. This can improve the rheology (Rodriguez, 2009) and provide heat credits. However these plants are generally limited in their ability to add such materials due to their reducing nature and given under highly acidic conditions that the breakdown potential of the titanium used for the autoclave lining is significantly reduced. A suitable oxidant must therefore be present to ensure the potential remains sufficiently high."

Executives in the mining industry are facing dramatically changing market expectations on reporting and transparency regarding the environmental and social impacts of projects, supply chains and products. Companies increasingly need to disclose the governance procedures they have in place to ensure communities, investors, employees, and Indigenous partners are effectively managing social and environmental risks. These disclosure requirements begin during exploration and carry through to all stages along the project life cycle. This type of environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure is referred to as ESG performance by the investment community. ESG is not a new concept, and it builds on and is intertwined with many concepts such as corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency, triple bottom line thinking, life cycle management and many others. This paper will explore how mining companies can develop a credible ESG governance approach and strategy that will reduce risk, open opportunities, and create value. This paper will summarise ESG trends and drivers, discuss the economics and investors’ perspective towards ESG, and outline leading ESG standards and guidelines of interest to investors, regulators, communities and other stakeholders. Linkage of ESG to global sustainability efforts such the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Global Compact will also be addressed.

ABSTRACT Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously self-heat. We tested a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by the rest potential difference between sulphides and particle size. A series of binary sulphide mixtures was tested. Individual sulphides and mixtures with low rest potential difference did not self-heat, but mixtures of high rest potential difference did. When testing pyrite-sphalerite mixtures, self-heating increased inversely with particle size, with the fineness of the pyrite governing self-heating, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction. The results support the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on hydrogen sulphide as an intermediate product is proposed. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping, and disposal of sulphides.

Influence of Sr and Mn single and combined additions on the modification of the Fe-containing intermetallic compounds and mechanical properties of Fe-rich AA319 aluminum alloys have been investigated, The microstructural features e,g, morphology of the Fe compounds and eutectic Si has been correlated to the mechanical properties, It was demonstrated that modification of the Fe compounds from the platelet ß-Al5FeSi to the Chinese script a-Al8Fe2Si compound improves the UTS and elongation of the alloys by 10.3% and 83.9%, respectively. Moreover, the simultaneous modification of the Fe compounds and eutectic Si increases the UTS and elongation of the alloys by 15,3% and 116,1%, respectively.

"This paper describes the use of vector analysis for determining the intersection of mineral deposit veins. The mathematical evolution of the analysis is outlined.IntroductionMany mineral deposits can be characterized by sets of intersecting veins. Often a vein will have a steep dip and may intersect with another similar vein. Finding the intersections of these veins is usually done by graphical means. Structural geologists, by the methods of descriptive geometry, can usual ly predict where intersections of veins will occur. This method normally requires accurate drafting and layout of the problem and does not always lend itself to solution in the field.Another method for solving this problem involves the use of vector analysis, which is easily adapted to hand-held programmable calculators. It is assumed at the outset that the reader is familiar with the dot and cross products used in vector analysis. Two excellent references are cited at the end of this note for convenience.A plane, in general, is defined by three points. The points of interest here are the points where three vertical drillholes penetrate the vein, or plane, in question. The elevations of these three points are best referred to sea level. This requires knowing the elevation of the collar of the drillhole above sea level and the drillhole depth from the collar to the vein. The elevation of the intersection point is then found by subtracting the hole depth from the collar elevation. These three points now define the plane of the vein. A similar set of three points will define a second vein, and it is our object to show analytically their intersection if it exists."

This paper describes the problems encountered and the steps taken to solve them in milling an ore containing relatively large amounts of pyrrhotite. A complex and greatly lengthened flotation circuit was required to recover the pyrrhotite. A very low pH had to be maintained in the cyanide circuit in order to get good recovery of the gold and maintain reasonable cyanide recovery. No. 2 shaft extends from surface to the 2875-ft. level, and No. 3 shaft, an internal winze, extends from the 2875-to the 5275-ft. level. In this paper, the differential equations governing the mass transport and the electrochemical reaction in a cathode catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are solved based on the polynomial series expansion method. Explicit expressions for the polarization curve as well as for the distributions of oxygen, current density and overpotential are obtained when a quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomial is employed to approximate the oxygen concentration distribution. These kinds of explicit solutions are desirable for MEA design and diagnosis purposes. The comparison between the conventional numerical approach and the explicit solution approach proposed here shows that satisfactory accuracy can be reached by the first four terms of the polynomial series. The effect of the catalyst layer thickness on the accuracy of the obtained explicit polynomial solutions is also discussed.

"This paper aims to overview some mechanical and physical features of the gabbroic rocks. The study has two phases: filed study/in-situ measurements and laboratory work. During the field studies, rock block samples were collected from different locations of the study area to represent the different types of the gabbroic rocks. Either core or rock samples for various tests were prepared from rock samples taken to the laboratory. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS), indirect tensile strength (ITS), point load index (PLI), Schmidth hammer rebound value (SHV), slake durability index (SDI), sonic velocity (SV) and unit weight (UW) test were carried out either on the selected rock block samples or core samples.INTRODUCTIONThe geology of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been divided into three major rock units (Lippard et al., 1986); an autochthonous succession, allochthonous units composed mainly of Mesozoic rocks and include the Sumeini Group (concomittent slope sediments), Hawasina Complex (basinal sediments) and the Semail ophiolite nappe (massive slice of former oceanic crust), that were emplaced as a series of thrust nappe in the Late Cretaceous and Neo-autochthonous sequence of Maastrichtian and Lower Tertiary sediments.The Semail Ophiolite (600 km long and up to 150 km wide) is thought by some authors (Glennie et al., 1990) to have been generated along a subduction related back-arc spreading axis during the Cenomanian-Turonian and was obducted onto the Arabian continental margin during the Campanian. Others, however, consider it to represent a primitive arc-spreading center related to oblique subduction Lippard et al., 1986). The Ophiolitic rocks in the study area comprise mantle and crustal sequences. The mantle peridotite and crustal gabbros are the dominant rock types of the exposed Semail Ophiolite north of the Hatta zone. This paper is only concentrated on the gabbroic rocks."

The Kazakhmys zinc refinery in Balkhash, Kazakhstan, which employs the Dynatec Zinc Pressure Leach Process, officially launched autoclave operations on December 27, 2003. The Kazakhmys plant is the world's first greenfields zinc refinery based on Dynatec's two-stage pressure leach technology. Production of zinc was realized on February 9, 2004, when the first cathode was stripped. Currently the plant start-up is ongoing, with progression to two-stage zinc pressure leach operation and ramp-up to full design capacity continuing through 2004.

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

THE discussion on Dr. Chipman's paper, Mapping by the Topographical Survey, centred mainly on the urgent need for aerial photographic reconnaissance of unmapped portions of the country as an initial phase in the provision of suitable topographical maps for use as a guide in geological mapping, prospecting, exploration, and development work in the areas concerned. This, ir was pointed out, would necessitate an expansion of the topographical work of the Bureau of Topography to keep pace with the photographid work and to meet the demand for maps for use by geologists of the Bureau of Geology and others. A resolution requesting Institute Council to make representations to the proper authorities, urging that aerial photography and topographic map-ping be greatly expanded to meet the pressing needs of the situation, was moved by DR. W. F. JAMES and seconded by MR. L. G. SMITH, and carried unanimously. The full text of the resolution appeared on page 221 of the May BULLETIN. Others who spoke in support of the resolution were MESSRS. E. S. MOORE, L. B. ROCHESTER, F. D. SHEPHERD, and W. J. WRIGHT. Dr. Hansen then presented his paper, Mapping by the Geological Survey, discussion on which is summarized below. MR. FRANK EBBUTT(l) spoke of the very valuable service the Geological Survey bas rendered the mineral industry, and indeed the whole nation, in its century of existence, despite the very inadequate financial support it has received. Now, more than ever before, a strong and expanded Geological Survey is essential if the Industry is to continue to prosper. Our known ore reserves are being depleted very rapidly, and we are finding no new orebodies to take their place. As an aid in prospecting and exploration, and also in the development of orebodies when they have been found, we must have geological maps of the vast sections of the country which at present are unmapped or inadequately mapped. The Institute should make every endeavour to have the Geological Survey strengthened so that such maps may be made available as soon as possible.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of the dip needle in the field of mining geology. The subject matter is new only to the extent that it reflects the writer' s added experience in recent years. The treatment is brief, and those interested in a more extended analysis are referred to the articles listed at the end of the paper. In the discovery and tracing of mineral deposits, the clip needle, like most other geophysical instruments, can be used in two ways. One method may be termed direct; the other, indirect. The direct method is that of finding or following certain ore-bodies by virtue of their magnetic properties. Explicitly, or by inference, it is the method which many mining men and practising geophysicists have in mind when they consider whether or not a certain property should be studied by geophysical means. In the ideal case, this method demands little or no knowledge of geological conditions. The indirect method uses the clip needle as an aid to purely geological studies in working out the structure of a mineralized area. Although not as simple as the direct method, it enjoys a much wider field of usefulness. The writer's experience in the past fifteen years, which is believed to be typical, is that the indirect method finds application four or five times as often as the direct method. The indirect method is of particular value because it furnishes information concerning the relationship between geological structure and ore occurrence. Most mining engineers will agree that structural control is an important factor in the localization of ore deposits, and therefore that the subject under consideration is of some interest in mining geology. Specifically, then, the present purpose is to outline the principles and practice of using the clip needle in working? out geological structure.
