An anhydrous chlorination process has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the production of copper, ferric oxide, and sulfur from chalcopyrite. The first part of the process is a chlorination step in which elemental sulfur and a mixture of iron-copper chlorides are produced. This paper describes the second step of the process in which the copper and iron chlorides are reacted with oxygen to selectively convert the iron chloride to ferric oxide and chlorine leaving the copper in the chloride form. The chlorides are pulverized and dropped countercurrent to a flow of oxygen in a vertical 20-cm-diam. reactor at 800° C. By leaching with brine, the copper chloride may be separated from the insoluble iron oxide and reduced to copper powder by electrowinning. It has been demonstrated that 70 to 80 pct of the iron can be converted to oxide in a single-stage operation with a chlorine content in the offgas of 80 pct. After removal of the oxygen, this chlorine could be recycled to the chlorination step. A two-stage operation will convert 98 to 99 pct of the iron in the mixture to insoluble oxides. The offgas from the second stage contains 70 pct chlorine.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. In this paper, single-component gas sorption and transient diffusion processes are described within coal matrix exhibiting bimodal pore structure. The coal matrix is treated as a poroelastic medium manifesting swelling and shrinkage effects due to the sorption of gas under effective overburden stress. Gas transport is considered Fickian with molecular (bulk) and surface diffusion processes simultaneously taking place in the macro-and micropores of coal, respectively. The numerical formulation is intended to be explicit in nature to investigate the influences of sorption phenomena on the macropore volumes and on the overall gas transport for the cases of gas uptake by and release from coal. Results of the study show the presence of hysteresis during a sorption?desorption cycle of the gas. It is also found that the overall gas transport takes place at a rate significantly less than that in the macropores only. Thus the existence of a retardation effect in the overall gas transport is concluded. This retardation effect is primarily due to the micropore resistances, in particular gas adsorption, and is independent of the changes in the macropore volumes. It is shown that macroporosity of the coal matrix may change during gas transport due to combined effects of pressure and sorption-induced swelling or shrinkage of the coal. It is estimated that the macroporosity variation is non-uniform in space and time, as it is expected in reality, and typically taking values less than ±10 percent of the initial porosity.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to degasify a virgin block of coal in the Beckley Coalbed using long horizontal holes drilled in an array from the bottom of a ventilation air shaft. Eight horizontal holes and an in situ pressure hole were drilled in a radial pattern to depths ranging from 418 to 910 ft (127 to 277 m) and 205 ft (62 m), respectively. The investigation showed the shaft was in a basin saturated with water, which resulted in low gas flows from holes. The in situ pressure at 200 ft (61 m) into the coalbed was 79 psig (544.6 KN/m2). The aver- age gas and water flows for the eight holes were 94,100 ft3/day (2,665 m3/day) and 13 gal/min (49.3 l/min) . After 514 days of degasification, 18.7 million ft3 (0.53 million m3) of gas had been drained. Methane face emissions, which were measured as a section advanced toward the shaft, were reduced about 77 pct, emphasizing the value of drainage by this technique. All holes were grouted before the area around the shaft was mined.

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers.

This preliminary statement presents some of the results of tests carried out at the Lakeside Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. , by the fuel section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation of New York . The object of these tests was to determine the thermal efficiency , ease of operation , and other particulars of a boiler equipped with specially designed furnace and burners for burning powdered coal . The boiler tested haş 13380 square feet of heating surface , and is one of eight boilers equipped with the Lopulco powdered coal system supplying steam to two 20,000 -Kw . steam turbines in the largest power house burning powdered coal . Twenty- six tests were run at rates of heat transference varying from 4000 to 8000 B.t.u. per square foot of boiler heating surface , and the mean thermal efficiency attained was about 84 per cent , based on the gross calorific value of the fuel as fired . The efficiency varied little with the rate of steaming , and its high value is accounted for by the small loss from incomplete combustion and the small amount of excess air which varied from 5 to 36 per cent . The coal burned had a gross calorific value of about 11500 to 12800 B.t.u. per pound , contained 2 to 5 per cent moisture , 33 to 36 per cent volatile matter and 9 to 13 per cent ash, and was so ground thaf 89 to 95 per cent would pass through a 100- mesh sieve . The ash had a softening point of 2150 to 2450 degrees F. , but did not fuse together at the bottom of the furnace because it was partly protected from the flame radiation by means of a series of water tubes connected to the boiler which were placed between the fumace bottom and the flame, ..

This investigation was performed to develop chlorination methods for extracting tungsten from scheelite and from an ore concentrate containing a mixture of scheelite and wolframite. On a laboratory scale with proper temperature control using elemental chlorine, over 90 percent extraction of tungsten is achieved. Carbon and sulfur dioxide were studied as reducing agents. The effects of salts such as calcium fluoride and sodium chloride were studied as additives to increase extraction and to reduce impurities in the volatile tungsten chloride product. Sodium chloride reacts with ferric chloride to form a nonvolatile double salt; whereas the chlorides and oxychlorides of tungsten are volatile and consequently condense free of iron. Separation of tungsten from molybdenum from an equal molar mixture was successful by fractionally distilling the oxygen-free chlorides and by selectively condensing the oxychlorides. Yields of 60 and 80 percent, respectively, were achieved for separating the less volatile tungsten chlorides containing less than 0.5 percent molybdenum.

A representative sample of gold-silver ore from the Keystone Mine, Manhattan, Nye County, Nev., was submitted for these tests. The ore was an altered diorite rock with very small amounts of sulfide minerals of copper, lead, zinc, antimony, and arsenic disseminated in fine grains throughout. As indicated by test results, much of the silver content of the ore apparently was associated with these sulfide minerals. The gold probably occurred with iron oxides in the ore. Assays showed 0.16 ounce of gold and 2.8 ounces of silver per ton of ore. This investigation was made to study application of activated carbon in the cyanidation treatment of the ore. The treatment proposed for u.se at the mill is as follows: The ore is crushed to minus-10-mesh size and separated into plus -and minus-65-mesh portions. The minus-10, plus 65-mesh sands are cyanided by leaching and the minus -65-mesh slimes by agitating. After 48 hours of agitation the slime pulp is thickened to about 1:1 water:solid ratio, and part of the pregnant solution is recovered. The pulp is then diluted to a 2:1 ratio, and the remaining dissolved values are extracted with the activated carbon. The barren pulp then can be discarded. This procedure eliminates the necessity for further washing the slime pulp and also recovers most of the excess sodium cyanide required for extracting the optimum amount of silver from this portion of the ore.

The Bureau of Mines developed by core drilling the Cove Meadow copper property, also known as the Patterson property, from May 6, 1949, to August 6, 1949. It is in the Cove Meadow mining district, northwestern Humboldt County, Nev., 102 miles northwest of Winnemucca. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves in a mineralized shear zone in andesite that has been partly explored by several surface cuts and two shallow underground workings. Production from this zone to August 1, 1,949, was 98 tons of hand-sorted copper ore assaying 5.1 percent. The development work performed by the Bureau of Mines comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, sampling the outcrops, and exploring by diamond drilling the shear zone adjacent to the fault. Seven holes were drilled for a total of 1,246 feet. Mineral reserves indicated by the project are confined to a length of 500 feet along the strike.

Leaching of a Georgia umber ore when using both ferrous sulfate and pickle liquor was studied in the laboratory . The ferrous sulfate content of the leach solution was the major factor affecting the extraction of manganese from the ore . Time , temperature , and the sulfuric acid content of the leach solutions had relatively little effect on leaching of manganese from the ore ; however , these factors did affect the amount of iron extracted from the umber and/or precipitated from solution . Simulated countercurrent leaching of the ore with pickle liquor containing 130 gpl (grams per liter ) ferrous sulfate ( 48 gpl ferrous iron ) produced a pregnant solution having 16 gpl manganese and 41 gpl iron . Filtration tests of the leach slurries indicated that separating the leach solution and solids by vacuum filtration was impractical , whereas pressure filtration was feasible when the cake thickness was limited to about three- fourths of an inch . Fired pellets of the filter cake yielded a firm , hard product analyzing 56 percent iron and less than 0.1 percent sulfur .

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the loca.ion of holes, drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The object of this investigation was to correlate the crushing strength of green pellets prepared from magnetite, specular and earthy hematite with the particle size of these respective raw materials. In this study no attempt was made to correlate the strength of fired pellets and particle size. The effect of particle size upon a number of fine ores and concentrates was studied. Much of the low-grade ore reserves in the Lake Superior Region must be finely ground before concentration and then agglomerated for iron and steelmaking processes. Fine natural ores also must be agglomerated. Pellets constitute an important type of agglomerate. Considerable handling occurs during screening to remove undersize and oversize pellets, and in transfering green unfired pellets from the balling machines to the heat-hardening equipment. As a result the strength of the green pellets is a factor of great importance.

The objective of this laboratory investigation was to develop a mattesmelting process for the recovery of copper from industrial smelter dusts . Experimentation was conducted on three samples of Cottrell precipitator dust from a northern Michigan smelter with variations in the following conditions : Temperature , charge composition , pelletization , and moisture content . Based on chemical analyses of the furnace slags , poorest recovery of copper was effected in smelting dry charges regardless of composition . Some improvement was noted with uniformly moistened charges and still more with pelletized (but dry) mixes , but best results were obtained from smelting moist , self - fluxing pellets . Under favorable conditions , experiments yielded furnace slags with an average copper content of only 0.15 percent , which is well below that of industrial copper reverberatory slags .

A study was made in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine of factors affecting gas ignition by a cutoff explosive charge. Experiments showed that, although gas could be ignited under some circumstances, the probability under normal mining conditions would be low. The use of permissible explosives, relatively short-delay intervals in firing adjacent holes, blasting to a 6-inch kerf, and reasonable care in the placement of the holes favor safe blasting and are current practice in mining. The experiments also showed that the weight of the charge is not a primary factor in the ignition of gas by a cutoff charge. The quenching action of a first charge on the igniting action of a second was verified in a supplementary study. Related experiments have shown that gas at the face may be ignited by a single charge of explosive when fired with a light coal burden. Permissible explosives were less hazardous under these conditions than nonpermissible explosives. The frequency of gas ignition in cutoff and single-charge experiments increased as the linear distance between the sheared face and the opposing mine rib increased.

The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). The results of tests of hack strength and lifting capacity in these two postures provide useful information to consider in determining the physiological and psychophysical stresses imposed by these

The Harding pegmatite dike is well known for the production of spodumene and lepidolite in the period 1920 to 1930. It attained greater prominence during the last war by being the largest producer of domestic tantalum ore from the rare mineral microlite. The deposit is believed to be the only proved reserve of tantalum ore in the United States today. In 1943 the main portion of a large tantalum-bearing zone in the Harding dike was developed by the Bureau of Mines with the assistance of the Federal Geological Survey. Analysis of this zone from 39 diamond drill holes and quarry exposures showed a large deposit containing 2 pounds of microlite per ton and 21 percent spodumene, In September 1948, the Bureau of Mines resumed development of the deposit with a view to extending the tantalum-bearing zone farther to the southwest or delimiting the ore body. Seven diamond-drill holes failed to penetrate the ore zone in its southwestward projection, Much of the following general information is summarized from the report on the first exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines by John H. The presence of antibiotic materials extractable with polar organic solvents was demonstrated in coals of various ranks. Since these antibiotics occur in low concentrations, 200 pounds of a high-volatile C coal was extracted with acetone at room temperature to obtain sufficient material for detailed study. The biologically active materials in the extract were concentrated by extracting with aqueous sodium hydroxide. The fractions soluble in sodium hydroxide inhibited bacterial cultures when present in concentrations comparable to those at which other antibiotics are active (5 µg/ml). Steam distillation of the extracts did not yield highly active materials, contrary to the finds of other investigators. Mass spectrometry of the extract indicated, mainly, the presence of 6-ring compounds in the region of mass 324 to 392. The predominance of 3-ring aromatic systems found by ultraviolet analysis suggests compounds such as biphenanthryl or similar structures. The activity of the hydroxide- soluble material decreased markedly when the phenolic hydroxyl groups were transformed into trimethylsilyl ethers. Hydrolysis of the ethers yielded a product having the same activity as the original material, which indicates that phenolic compounds are largely responsible for the antibiotic activity observed.

Toxic fumes produced by detonating explosives in surface mining and construction operations pose potential hazards to workers and the public. Blasting operations produce both toxic and nontoxic gaseous products; the toxic products are mainly carbon monoxide (CO) and the oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings as well as one fatality. At worst people may be fatally poisoned and the least to be expected is increased public objections to blasting. Local and state agencies could demand a cessation of the blasting requiring more expensive mechanical means to break the rock. This paper discusses the most feasible means of preventing CO migration, mitigating CO that has migrated, and detecting CO in an underground enclosed space and may help reduce the exposure of unsuspecting area residents to carbon monoxide and help prevent the implementation of unnecessary regulations and limitations on blasting. Single-hole shots and small-scale multiple-hole blasts were performed that indicate promising means of prevention and mitigation.
