Round Mountain Gold (RMG) in cen­tral Nevada, reports that over a nine-year period and a million operating hours, its fleet of 150-ton and 190-ton haul trucks has averaged better than 93% availability, with some of the trucks approaching 70,000 operating hours. Repair costs have been far below industry averages. Mine operations manager Pete Kesl credits the high availability and low repair costs to a succession of Product Support Agreements between RMG and Caterpillar dealer Cashman Equipment. He adds that good equipment and a high level of trust and co­operation between all parties to these agreements have been essential to their success at Round Mountain.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the formation of boron and boron-carbide coatings by vapor-phase reactions. Optimum parameters were determined for hydrogen reduction of boron trichloride and for the fonnation of boron-carbide coatings on graphite by reaction with the depositing boron. At 1,300° C, about 85 percent of the boron was deposited. Tungsten substrates did not react with the boron deposit; other substrates reacted to various extents. The hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide was briefly investigated. Boron carbide was deposited at 1,300° C by adding methane to the boron trichloride-hydrogen feed gas. The chemical composition of the vapor-deposited boron carbide approximated B4C. A method of etching B4C was developed to study its microstructure. When boron was deposited on graphite at 1,500° C, very hard, uniform, strongly adherent coatings of B4C were formed that might be useful in rocket nozzle applications.

The thermodynamic properties of synthetic acmite, NaFe3+Si206, were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The values of the standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298.15, from the elements and from the oxides, ?H°298.15, are ?Hf°298.15 = -615.87 ±0.71 kcal/mole, ?H°298.15 (from oxides) = -32.08 ±0.53 kcal/mole. Various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature to calculate all the related thermodynamic properties in the range of 298 to 1,263 K. The standard Gibbs energy of formation is ?Gf°298.15 = -575.8 kcal/mole.

"There was a time when any suggestion that the Davy flame (safety) lamp be discarded, would have evoked unlimited, criticism. However, that time is past.Investigations both here and abroad have shown conclusively that the Davy lamp does not have the necessary factor of safety against ignitions of mine gas, and England, the lost stronghold of the Davy lamp in Europe, has eliminated this lamp and substituted safer types.In the United States there are companies who still use the Davy lamp in spite of all that has been said and published as to the dangers connected with its use.Recently the purchasing agent of an anthracite coal company requested the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to pass upon the safety of some braise gauzes for use in a shielded Davy lamp. A shielded Davy lamp is an ordinary Davy safety lamp equipped with a circular brass shield that is attached to the lamp posts. This shield extends about one-half way around the gauze and one-half of the gauze height. The main purpose of the shield is to prevent the lamps being extinguished by a sudden increase in the velocity of the air current past the lamp.The brass gauzes submitted for this test represented two grades of brass - a yellow brass and a red brass. The analysis of these brasses was not determined. Two shielded Davy lamps that were submitted for the tests each had a steel gauze. These steel gauzes were also tested. Tests were made in horizontally moving mixtures of Pittsburgh natural gas and air at velocities of 400 to 1,000 feet per minute. The gas percentages used were 7%, 8.6%, and 11%. Tests were made with the lamp shield in two positions relative to the lamp and direction of flow of the gas-and-air mixture. In one position the shield was between the gauze and flow, as normally used. In the other position the shield was on the downstream side of the lamp. The tests were continued until one or more failures or gas explosions been obtained with each of the six gauzes. The results of these tests summarized as follows:"

The Bureau of Mines reviewed the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) literature on the nonmetal binary and ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements, with emphasis directed to the following nonmetals: B, C, N, O, and Si. This review examines each of these binary and selected ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements as coatings and gives some of their preparative methods, uses, and properties. A total of 259 references were found for these compounds of the nine elements. This review was utilized in the Bureau's research to provide abrasion-, erosion-, and corrosion-resistant coatings in order to conserve critical metals and protect various metallic surfaces in metallurgical, mining, and energy conversion systems.

Slope failure accidents were responsible for about 12% of U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2003. Small surface movements on a mine highwall may be precursors of failure that, if detected, could provide sufficient warning to enable workers and machinery to be withdrawn to safety. Radar interferometry offers the necessary precision to detect these movements. Radar has some advantages over other methods in its ability to cover large surface areas for true two-dimensional monitoring day and night under almost any weather condition. Radar’s active transmit/receive mode of operation provides for more direct sampling than do passive optical methods that depend on solar illumination. Improvements in microprocessor speeds and capacities have led to the development of a number of small, portable, ground-based systems; such systems are now being deployed at several locations around the world. As part of an ongoing study of monitoring technologies, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, cooperated to assess the feasibility of using interferometric radar to monitor mine slope stability. Field tests of a device incorporating prototype equipment were successful in that small, centimeter-scale displacements on rock slopes were detected.

Methane concentration peaks were measured by the Bureau of Mines at coal mine working faces during entry development. The statistical distribution of peaks was found to be normal or log normal depending on how well the methane was being mixed into the ventilation airstream. A normal distribution indicated good mixing, whereas a log-normal distribution indicated that mixing was poor. In addition, the "highest" peaks over selected intervals were found to fit a type I extreme-value distribution, a result similar to that obtained while mining longwall faces.

Monitoring systems can have numerous uses in the mine. They can aid in the efficient management of the mine by providing environmental trend data, production and maintenance control, and communications. In some cases, they can provide justification to petition the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fog a variance of one of the mandatory safety standards. They may also increase the gross revenues of the mine by increasing the amount of coal produced or increase profits by reducing the cost of producing that coal. No single system will satisfy the requirement of all mines. Some may require simple hard-wired status-reporting systems; others, multipurpose computer-based systems that collect, analyze, and store data and perhaps control some mine functions. Even though systems vary in complexity, they are all composed of three functional components. The first component is sensors that measure the environmental or production parameters and produce an electrical signal that is fed into the telemetry. The second is telemetry devices that receive the signal from the sensors and transmit it in either analog or digital format to the third com¬ponent, analysis and display equipment. This equipment receives the transmitted signal and either stores it for later analysis or displays it. The analysis-display equipment ranges from simple strip chart recorders with preset alarms to computers, cathode-ray tubes (CRT's), and line printers that can also provide production reports. 4.2 Uses of a Mine Monitoring System A list of potential uses for mine monitoring systems, including both production-related functions and those related to health and safety, was used to develop a questionnaire. It was presented to representatives of the mining community to determine their current monitoring priorities. The responses indicated that the industry's priorities fall into the following two categories: First priority- Production and haulage Maintenance Second priority- Ventilation Communication Fire monitoring Personnel The survey shows that production-oriented systems were the most appealing to the questionnaire respondents. Since even small improvements in production efficiency and maintenance can have a large financial impact, the desirability of monitoring systems that focus on these areas is understandable. The results are summarized in table 4-1. The function that scored 100 was viewed as the most beneficial monitoring function.

Techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of high-purity rare-earth metals and their alloys by electrolysis of the oxides in fluoride media are summarized. Cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, gadolinium, and yttrium metals, the mixture didymium, and specific alloys of these metals and samarium with iron, nickel, chromium, and cobalt were prepared. Individual metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state on tungsten or molybdenum cathodes. Alloys were prepared by electrodepositing the rare-earth metal on a consumable cathode, at a temperature above the melting point of the eutectic formed between the rare-earth element and the cathode material. Cells were designed for electrowinning metal products in gram and pound quantities, and methods for continuous electrowinning of cerium and lanthanum were developed.

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. Underground coal mining operations in the United States continue to increase productivity as mining equipment and practices are improved. Unfortunately, increased production also results in the potential for increased respirable dust generation and worker exposure. In response, US operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and looking to emerging technologies in an effort to better control respirable dust levels. Ventilating air and water sprays remain the basis of dust control strategies for both longwall and continuous mining operations, and the level of application for these controls continues to increase. In addition, new technologies are emerging that have the potential to further reduce dust levels. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research into methods to optimize existing control technologies and evaluate emerging control technologies. This paper will summarize control technologies routinely being used in underground coal mine operations, as well as provide a review of new controls that are being pursued.

A new method for measuring deformations of rock surfaces in underground excavations has been suggested by Dr. James Powell of Brookhaven National Laboratories (BNL) and subsequently developed and successfully demonstrated in a mining environment by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) and Brookhaven National Laboratories. The system uses 35-mm photography of targets strategically located on surfaces of interest, such as across the roof and on the sides of a mine drift or tunnel. The optimum tar-get, as determined in this investigation, consists of a white ?X? made with 1/8-inch-wide reflective tape on a black 6-inch square. Photographs, taken in pairs from two separated camera positions and at regular time intervals, were analyzed at the Bureau by hand and at Brookhaven National Laboratories using techniques and equipment similar to those used in cloud chamber film analysis. Test results show that deformation-measurement accuracies of better than ±0.020 inch in a drift that is 20 feet wide can be expected. This degree of accuracy, plus providing displacement data in the X, Y, and Z directions (rather than the one direction formerly possible), makes this a noteworthy and useful tool for industry as well as for mining research.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50. There are numerous barriers to the prevention of hearing loss among miners. In an effort to overcome some of these obstacles, this work was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. Experiments will involve analysis of this new technology under both laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory components will consist of controlled studies using an anthropometrically correct test fixture as well as human subjects to evaluate the adequacy/effectiveness of various hearing protective devices. Electroacoustical performance testing of new noise monitors will also be conducted in a laboratory setting. Subsequent field studies will determine the actual usefulness and practicality of the personal protective/monitoring equipment as used in different mining situations. It is anticipated that increased on-the-spot awareness of hazardous noise levels and the availability of better-suited hearing protectors will provide a degree of protection beyond what is currently attained in different mining environments. Therefore, the intent of this project is to identify and adapt new acoustical technologies and products that have a direct application to individual mine workers. With increased knowledge of these technological advances, a greater demand for similar devices will likely occur, which, in turn, will lead to a better understanding and awareness of hearing loss prevention methods throughout the mining community. The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County, Wyo., and is favorably situated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities. Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small trees and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.

The Bureau of Mines tested 48 materials for their ability to absorb H2S from hot simulated producer gas (1,000°-1,500° F). The material found best from the standpoint of absorption capacity, durability, and amenability to regeneration was sintered pellets of 75 percent fly ash-25 percent Fe203. The performance of this absorbent under simulated and actual conditions is described. The effect of absorbent composition, absorbent temperature, steam content of the gas, and tar vapors and dust in producer gas is discussed.

CARBON-BLACK shipments, which had declined in the latter art of 1953, remained low in 1954 until after settlement of the labor strike that occurred in the rubber industry in July and August. The production of new model automobiles in the last quarter of the year spurred the demand for rubber tires and consequently the demand for carbon black. Total shipments of 1,498 million pounds for the year were 4 percent below 1953.

A rig was constructed to burn 100 to 125 lb of coal per hour at 4,000° F in a cyclone burner with oxygen-enriched air preheated to 1,500° F to ascertain the problems in the coal-fired MHD generation of power. Potassium carbonate was added to the coal at several concentrations up to 1.23 g-moles/kg of coal (17 lb K2C03/100 lb coal). Boiler-tube materials maintained at wall temperatures of 800° to 1,500° F were exposed to the combustion effluent of 1,800° to 2,500° F. Practically complete removal of sulfur dioxide from the stack gas was achieved with the seed addition. Nitric oxide formation followed theoretical expectations at combustion temperatures with some decomposition of the NO occurring as the gas cooled flowing through the system. Nitrates in the fly ash were less than 1.7 percent of the total fixed nitrogen. With aqueous extraction of the fly ash a maximum recovery of 75 percent of the potassium was obtained. Haynes 25 was unattacked at a wall temperature of 1,500° F in combustion gas at 2,500° F; the stainless steels 310, 316, and 446 were resist-ant at a metal temperature of 1,100° F in gas at 2,100° F.

Because of the extreme interest in materials with high melting temperatures and the advantages offered over the powder route for making high-density material, arc-melting and centrifugal-casting methods were investigated for preparing shapes of hafnium carbide with and without excess carbon. Highly satisfactory equipment was constructed and efficient operating procedures were established. Also, methods for preparing consumable electrodes and shrink-tolerant graphite molds were developed. Although crack-free hafnium carbide (6.3 weight-percent carbon) shapes were not made, coherent castings containing 9 to 13.5 weight-percent carbon were produced; the same compositions were shown to be resistant to thermal shock. Selected physical and chemical tests were performed on castings chosen for investigation by chemical and nondestructive inspection techniques. Electrical conductivity and thermal expansion measurements were made. Measurable oxidation of all the compositions studied was observed to start between 500° and 600° C. Attack by nitrogen, however, did not occur until temperatures exceeded 2,000° C. A linear relationship of the logarithm of the diamond pyramid hardness to the temperature was noted. Considerable scatter of the bend-rupture strengths at room temperature and of the tensile strengths up to 2,000° C was found. However, at the latter temperature and above, a definite relationship of strength to temperature was observed and some ductility was noted.
