After more than 20 years dependence on bituminous coal as a primary fuel for generating electricity, the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company initiated a one-year study on the economics of building an electric generating station using anthracite as a fuel. The study will be completed in December 1976. If the feasibility study so indicates, PP&L will consider installing four 400,000 kilowatt generating units for scheduled commercial operation in 1985. Each unit would consume up to one million tons of anthracite annually. Anthracite generally is more difficult and expensive to extract than bituminous coal, but it has a significantly lower sulfur content than the bituminous coal currently being used by PP&L, thereby eliminating the costs of installing sulfur emission controls at generating stations. Moreover, significant reductions in transportation costs may be realized because the utility's operating territory is situated in the center of the anthracite region in northeastern Pennsylvania. These advantages may indicate that the use of anthracite is more economical than bituminous coal to PP&L. ASBESTOS -Asbestos production in the U.S. dropped again in 1975 until it was just two-thirds of that in 1973. This was in spite of the very strong demand caused by the Quebec strike. The 7-month strike of the asbestos miners in Thetford Mines, Quebec cut off 55 percent of the normal supply of U.S. consumers. Apparent domestic consumption was less than 75 percent of that in 1974. The wage settlement will probably result in a 20 percent increase in asbestos prices.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 153 natural gas samples from 16 States. Of the total samples, 149 were collected during calendar year 1993. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1993. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

Exploring for additional ore bodies on the property of the New Idria Quicksilver Mining Co.'s property at Idria, Calif., was done by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. It comprised a study of the geology, mapping, and searching for additional cinnabar by diamond drilling from both surface and underground. Diamond-drill equipment was moved to the project in November 1941, and drilling was completed in.May 1942. Sixteen holes aggregating 2,580 feet were drilled. Diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines developed information regarding ore structures that proved valuable to the operators in planning underground prospecting that led directly to the discovery of high-grade ore.

Techniques were developed for preparing metallurgical-grade copper powder from industrially produced cement copper. Flotation was used for rejecting discrete gangue particles, acid leaching to remove residual iron and aluminum, hydrogen reduction to eliminate oxygen, sintering to consolidate the fine-sized copper, and grinding to obtain copper powder. Powders prepared from six different cement copper samples contained, in percent, 98.5 to 99.0 Cu, 0.10 to 0.05 Fe, 0.10 to 0.08 insoluble material and the remaining individual impurities less than 0.15 percent. The apparent density, flow characteristics, and other physical properties were suitable for powder metallurgy applications. An economic evaluation showed that this process was economically feasible. Processing costs appeared modest when considering that copper powder commands a price normally about 17.5 cents per pound over that of electrolytic copper.

Uranium metal of improved purity was prepared by electrorefining commercial magnesium-reduced uranium in a molten sodium chloride-uranium trichloride electrolyte. The best operating conditions for the preparation of refined metal were established as follows: an electrolyte containing 8.7 to 13.3 weight-percent uranium; initial cathode current densities from 300 to 1,500 amp/sq ft; and a molten salt temperature of 860° C. Ingots produced from electrorefined uranium crystals prepared with these operating conditions were substantially free of metallic impurities. The only impurities in the refined and consolidated metal were present in low or undetectable amounts.

Lignite samples were collected so as to be widely representative of the extensive deposits in the western north-central area. These were carbonized at temperatures ranging from 450° to 550° C., according, to a standardized procedure. In general, product yields varied; extremes obtained on selected samples show char recoveries on the moisture- and ash-free basis as 56.7 percent for slack lignite or "leonardite" to 80.8 percent for a concentrate of the fusain component from a typical face sample; normal lignite samples averaged approximately 70 percent. Tar-plus-light-oil yields ranged from 3.3 percent for the fusain concentrate to 11.0 percent for a normal sample, averaging approximately 8 percent; gas recoveries varied more widely both in yield and in composition, ranging, from 10.0 percent to 27.7 percent, the latter being from leonardite and quite high in carbon dioxide. Sampling was conducted with the view of representing, as nearly as possible, all beds delineated by Brant (2);4/ many are necessarily missing since collection was confined largely to worked deposits. Data presented in this report indicate a general uniformity of North-Central lignite in respect to low-temperature carbonization, with a few possible exceptions of a local nature. When processed according to the indicated conditions, maximum tar yield may be realized with minimum loss of recoverable heating value of the original coal. Natural weathering of lignite, however, does affect tar yield adversely and should be held to a practical minimum in any commercial operation.

Domestic production of Metallurgical-grade manganese has contributed such a small percentage of the United States industrial demands that areas known to contain large tonnages of low-grade manganese ore have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines to reduce this country's dependence on foreign ores. A major source of low-grade manganese is the Cuyuna iron range in Minnesota. The entire Cuyuna iron range is covered by an overburden of glacial drift that, in some places, reaches depths of 200 feet or more. Prospecting and exploration must be guided by geophysical methods, drilling results, or projections of exposures found in operating mines because there are no outcrops near the productive parts of the range. Past drilling for the purpose of outlining iron ore generally was confined to the highly oxidized zones. Much of the manganese with which the Bureau of Mines is concerned occurs in thin-bedded unoxidized iron formations, too low in iron content to have been of interest to those seeking commercial iron ore. The primary objective of the core-drilling reported here was to obtain cores of different classes of manganiferous rocks and to determine whether or not the samples were amenable to beneficiation.

Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 42 samples from 37 fields in the major producing areas in Mexico are presented in this report. Table 1 includes information on the source and general characteristics of each sample. Table 2 gives a summary of analytical and computed data. The question "Why can not American kaolins be substituted for English china clay?" has been asked time and time again, and more often since the beginning of the present war in Europe, which has threatened to cut off the supply of European clays imported from abroad. The answer to this question has invariably been, that the domestic kaolins are not as pure and uniform in composition as the imported clays. This demand for white-burning American clays is of such economic importance that it was considered advisable to determine whether some of our vast deposits of impure white clays could not be refined sufficiently to permit their being substituted for the foreign materials. Up to the present time mechanical principles only have been applied in the refining of kaolins, but in order to keep pace with the increasing requirements for better quality and uniformity of product, the application of the principles of colloidal chemistry is necessary. The investigation described in this report was carried on to deter- mine the practicability of applying technical control of clay disperse systems to the refining of kaolins and the utilization of the prepared clay in the manufacture of vitreous china and wall tile. It is hoped that this report will prove a stimulus to the clay- washing industry; will point out a method of refining certain Amer- ican clays, and will lead to the substitution of domestic kaolins for imported china clays by manufacturers of high-grade ceramic wares.

The Bureau of Mines conducted mineral investigations of the Peace Rock and Deadwood River roadless areas in Idaho, in 1992. Literature research was done by the Idaho Geological Survey. The study areas contain black sand placers (thorium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements), gold, and molybdenum prospects. Except for unrecorded placer gold, there has been no mineral production from the areas. No mineral resources were delineated, but a multi-million tonne molybdenum resource is in the Big Pine Creek area and a 142 million m' black sand deposit is in the Stolle Meadows, Peace Valley, and Deadwood River areas. The Deadwood mine produced zinc, lead, and silver. There are six mining districts in and adjoining the areas; Warm Lake, Deadwood, Garden Valley/Lowman, Banner, Summit Flat, and Grimes Pass. Few claims, mostly placer, were active in the study area in 1992. The study areas are underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Most of the deposits are alluvial accumulations of heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho batholith. Stockwork and narrow veins along shears account for the base and precious metal concentrations. Eleven prospects were examined. Workings consist of drill holes, pits and adits. Geothermal resources (hot springs) occur mainly along the Middle Fork Payette River; Vulcan Hot Springs is a designated Known Geothermal Resource Area. Sand and gravel resources are of local interest.

This report describes an inexpensive triaxial equipment for testing 2-1 / 8- , 4- , and 5-5 / 8 - inch - diameter rock cylinders subjected to loading conditions comparable to those encountered in underground mining . Only minimal specimen preparation is required . The maximum axial load that can be applied is 250,000 lb , which corresponds to an axial stress of 70,000 psi for the 2-1 /8- inch- diameter specimen . The maximum radial pressure that can be applied is the same for each specimen diameter ; namely , 10,000 psi . The mechanical parts in this equipment are relatively easy to machine and fabricate . The cost of all parts , including the 250,000- lb hydraulic press but not including labor costs , was approximately $ 1,000 .

Introduction The fields of an infinite line source in the presence of a conducting half-space have been examined by Wait and Spies (1971). In any real communication link using a current-carrying cable for the transmitting antenna, the cable is of finite length. Here we examine the fields of a finite length cable carrying a constant current in the presence of a homogeneous conducting half-space. The constant current assumption is valid at sufficiently low frequencies when an insulated cable is grounded at the end points (Wait, 1952; Sunde, 1968). Here we examine both surface and buried cables since both downlink and uplink communication links are of interest. Also, we examine both frequency and time solutions since either CW or pulsed communications may be used. Finally, it is necessary to include both magnetic and electric field solutions since reception could be with either loops or dipoles. Since the finite cable solution is more complicated than both the infinite line source and the short dipole solutions, we explore under what conditions a cable appears to be either infinitely long or very short. Some special cases, such as- the low frequency limit, permit analytical solutions which exhibit the dependence on various parameters, such as cable length, quite clearly. The present list covers those approvals issued during calendar years 1953 and 1954. It supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953. The procedure established in Bulletin 543 of numbering items in each category consecutively to indicate the chronological order of the approvals has been continued in this circular. Information on approvals issued later than January 1, 1955 may be obtained by referring to Coal Age, a monthly magazine issued by the McGraw-Hill Publishing Co.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a finite element analysis of roof stresses associated with a 4-foot-high by 18-foot-wide underground coal mine entry. This analysis starts with known loading conditions determined in an underground coal mine in West Virginia and is extended to other possible underground loading conditions. The roof failures predicted by the finite element analysis under known loading conditions correlate well with the roof failures observed underground. The most probable failure modes are identified for the various loading conditions considered. Various failure preventive measures are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR), Brookwood, AL, evaluated the use of sheathed explosive charges in breaking up large stones that can jam the feeder¬breaker or pan conveyor on longwalls and halt operations. Use of the sheathed charge reduced the downtime of the longwall panel to 15 to 30 min as compared with the 1 to 2 h required to drill and shoot the stone. Firing the sheathed charge at the face caused no significant damage to Iongwall equipment. Use of the sheathed charge also represented an improvement in safety by eliminating the exposure of miners to the inherent hazards of the face for extended periods of time. Another benefit, which is difficult to quantify, is the elimination of the temptation to shoot mudcaps or adobes, which is illegal in U.S. underground coal mines.
