In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. In this study we explore the use of a novel numerical modelling approach to study the effect of pillar reinforcement on pillar stability. Case studies in the literature indicate that tendons, strapping of the pillars, and shotcrete or thin spray-on liners are commonly used to reinforce pillars. No clear methodology exists to select the type of support or to design the capacity of the support required, however. This has led to ongoing collapses in some mines in spite of heavy support being used to reinforce unstable pillars. A limit equilibrium model with confinement on the edge of the pillar was used to simulate the interaction of the support with the failing pillar. The model correctly predicts that an increase in confinement will lead to a decrease in the extent of pillar failure. As the displacement discontinuity boundary element method allows for the efficient solution of largescale bord-and-pillar layouts, the effect of pillar confinement can now be studied on a mine-wide scale. Accurate calibration of the limit equilibrium model is, however, required before this method can be used for the design of effective pillar support.

Recovery of a chromite concentrate from UG2 flotation tailings streams, of a grade suitable for further pyrometallurgical treatment for the production of ferrochrome, has certain specific challenges not only by virtue of the decoupled nature of the primary PGM recovery process and secondary gravity based chromite recovery circuits, but also because of intrinsic variations in the nature of the ore and its mineral composition. Variability in the ore, together with upstream process dynamics, creates a challenging environment in which to achieve optimal recovery of a gravity concentrate with accurate grade control. This paper examines certain inter-relational aspects between the ore gangue and chromite mineral types, the influence of the primary PGM extraction circuit and secondary chromite extraction activity as applied specifically to UG2 ore against a background of actual plant experiences and circuit configurations applied in order achieve a suitable quality of chromite concentrate.

In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached in order to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). This paper investigates the atmospheric leaching process, in order to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals; in particular Cu, Fe, Ni, and the PGMs in particular Ru and Ir with key process variables, acid concentration, copper concentration under oxidative leaching conditions. Higher initial acid concentration resulted in a higher copper, iron and nickel extractions, as well as higher leaching rates together with faster Cu, Ru, Ir precipitation occurring. On the other hand, a higher initial copper concentration resulted in more nickel but less iron being extracted. Keywords: PGM, converter matte, leaching, precipitation

The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown. Spiral concentrators are compact, cost-effective and generally efficient gravity concentration separators for a wide range of applications (for example: coal, beach sands, iron ore, chromite and tantalite). Large mineral processing plants consist of thousands of spiral concentrators resulting in large plant footprints (capital intensive) and the adjustment of splitters is time consuming, impractical and is in many cases neglected?high capacity (HC) spiral concentrators aim to address these shortcomings. As a result Exxaro Namakwa Sands is currently investigating high capacity spiral technology for the spiral circuit upgrade at the primary concentrator plants (PCPs). This article summarizes the rougher spiral performance evaluation that was conducted on different types of spiral concentrators (the traditional MG4 spiral concentrator and the high capacity (HC) spiral concentrator) under different feed conditions. In addition, the effect of slimes on the spiral concentrator performance was also investigated. Slimes rheology was linked to the poor concentrator performance at the higher slimes concentrations. The test campaign shows a sacrifice in recovery under design-feed conditions can be expected when using high capacity spiral concentrators in the rougher stage when compared to traditional spiral technology currently in use. Both spiral concentrators show a detrimental impact of slimes on the performance, but the high capacity spiral concentrator is more sensitive to the higher slimes conditions.

He, Mr Henzen and Mr Funke have written this paper, 'The disposal of polluted effluents from mining, metallurgical and metal-finishing industries, their effects on receiving water and remedial measures.' This is the Water Year, as you know, and it is most appropriate that we should have such an authority to talk to us on this very important topic. I now have much pleasure in asking Dr Stander to introduce his paper." After the presentation of the paper the President said, "Gentlemen, I am sure that you would like me on your behalf, to thank Dr Stander very sincerely for a paper which I think has enabled us to get a completely new slant on the Water Year. There are many people who have put their finger on this campaign and said, it is all a gimmick. There are others-I suppose notably some of the bridge clubs which operate on week-day afternoons in Parkview-who seem to think that this is a quick way of getting early rain. Of course, it is not. This is a most important paper which we have had given to us this afternoon. You probably found it here when you arrived and have not read it-I was very lucky to be able to read it last night, and there is an awful lot of meat in it. For as long as I have been associated with mining in any way, there has been a problem of polluted effluent-of effluents carrying a mineral load from mining, and I think Dr Stander is absolutely right-and, of course, the Commission is right when they say that this is not merely the problem of mine management or mine owners-this is a problem which affects every single human being in this country.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

Furnace wall tubes from 600 MW subcritical boilers at three coal-fired power stations were sampled and the fireside deposits examined to determine the mechanism of fireside corrosion. This involved an indepth investigation into the morphology and composition of the fireside deposits and the conditions of the furnace that enable this type of attack. SEM-EDS analysis revealed high concentrations of oxygen, iron, and sulphur, QEMSCAN and XRD analyses identified the presence of Fe3O4, Fe2O3, FeS, and FeS2. Differential thermal analysis showed thermal activities at temperatures of 500–600°C, 900–1100°C, and 1100–1250°C, which are associated, respectively, with FeS2 oxidation to FeS and Fe2O3, at 475–525°C, formation of aluminosilicates at 925–1100°C, and melting of FeS around 1190°C. The absence of sodium and potassium eliminates the contribution of molten alkali sulphates to the corrosion. The consistent coexistence of iron sulphide and iron oxide is indicative of the substoichiometric conditions in the furnace, while the detection of pyrite suggests that the coal is not completely combusted, which points to a poor combustion process. These observations were affirmed by gas analysis at one of the stations, where very high levels of carbon monoxide were measured at the furnace wall (≥ 14 000 ppm) and furnace exit (≥ 3500 ppm). The high CO concentrations are indicative of limited combustion caused by limited O2. These reducing conditions promote the formation of FeS-rich deposit, which is the corrosive species responsible for degradation.

A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

When activated carbon is used for the recovery of gold and silver from Witwatersrand gold-plant solutions, severe fouling of the carbon by calcium carbonate is experienced. Also, difficulty is encountered in the retention of the adsorbed silver on the carbon because it is displaced by gold. The acidification of plant pregnant solutions before they are contacted with carbon was therefore investigated as a means of overcoming these shortcomings. The results from batch laboratory experiments on the effect of pH on gold adsorption from plant solutions and from synthetic solutions of high ionic strength indicated reaction rate optima in the region of pH 5 and below pH I. The effect of pH on the equilibrium capacity constant for gold adsorption onto activated carbon was also studied, using both a plant solution and a synthetic solution of high ionic strength. In the case of the plant solution, the results suggested only a marginal change in carbon capacity for gold in the pH range 12 to 6, with significant increases in capacity at lower pH values. In the case of the synthetic solution of high ionic strength, the capacity constant was found to increase steadily as the pH was lowered from 12 to I. It was also found that the gold adsorption capacity of the carbon was significantly better for the synthetic solution. No precipitation of gold from the pregnant solution (gold content approximately 6 g/t) was noted as the pH was decreased to values as low as ,. However, about 25 per cent of the 0,6 g/t silver content was found to have precipitated when a pH value of 3,0 was attained. Further substantial precipitation of silver took place as the pH was lowered further. The investigation was extended by the passing of suitably acidified gold-plant solutions through one or more columns containing activated carbon. Preliminary results showed that the particle size of the carbon had a significant effect on the rate of gold adsorption. No displacement of adsorbed silver by gold was observed to take place at an influent pH of 5. In a typical continuous 'merry-go-round' operation involving three columns in which gold was eluted from the lead column every 48 hours, effluent values averaging 0,001 g/t gold could be consistently achieved under simulated plant-operating conditions. The results were obtained at relatively high velocities of influent solution, resulting in very little hold-up of gold in the carbon-recovery circuit. More than 99,9 per cent of the gold and more than 99,8 per cent of the silver was recovered in the adsorption circuit, while the elution data indicated an average elution recovery of 99,8 per cent of the adsorbed gold and 98,2 per cent of the adsorbed silver. Elution of the carbon was carried out at 91 QC. This involved pretreatment of the carbon with a sodium cyanide solution, followed by elution with deionized water. At a loading flowrate of 66 bed volumes per hour, the indicated take-up of metals on the carbon in the lead column was as follows; 53 k g/t gold, 6 k g/t silver, 57 k g/t copper, 14 k g/t nickel, and I k g/t zinc. Only a trace of cobalt was adsorbed. At an elution rate of 1,7 bed volumes per hour, the lead column was found to be completely stripped in under 5 hours, with concentrations of gold in the eluate reaching 6 to 7 g/l. Besides the excellent adsorption and elution results obtained when acidified pregnant solution was used, no fouling of the carbon was indicated, and the pressure drop across the three columns was considered to be well within practical limits. When compared with conventional zinc precipitation, the carbon process would appear to have considerable economic merit, with strong indications that significant savings would be possible both in capital and operating costs. Further pilot-plant experiments, preferably on a gold plant, would be required before a meaningful cost comparison could be made with the existing process.

To conserve fresh water resources and comply with environmental regulations, DRDGOLD, a South African gold producer re-treating surface tailings, has transitioned to a fully closed water circulation system. Consequently, the accumulation of contaminants, as well as addition of reagents, has led to changes in water composition that have compromised leach performance and overall gold recovery. A two-sample t-test confirmed a significant difference in gold recoveries between the use of Rand Water, which was used as a benchmark, and untreated process water. Atomic absorption analysis of ERGO’s process water, confirmed the presence of iron, nickel, zinc, and manganese. A study of the effect of the identified contaminants on gold recovery showed that iron, nickel, and zinc have the largest negative effect on gold recovery, with iron and nickel being more detrimental than zinc. Sulphates were shown to have a possible passivation effect, which also influenced gold recoveries, although to a lesser extent than the heavy metals. Calcium, when present in excess, had a positive influence on gold recovery indicating the possible formation of a calcium aurocyanide complex. Lime softening successfully reduced the heavy metal and sulphate concentrations, and the gold recoveries obtained with the treated process water were similar to those as achieved with Rand Water.

Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability

In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. Spontaneous combustion during coal mining operations is a major problem that affects the health and safety of workers and causes environmental problems. The phenomenon is associated with the presence of coal, coal shale, and pyrite. In 2020, a premature detonation incident occurred at an iron ore mine where the waste material contains black carbonaceous shale units known to be associated with pyrite. The spontaneous combustion propensity and properties of samples of the black carbonaceous shales from the mine were examined and compared with samples from the Witbank Coalfield. The spontaneous combustion liability indexes of these samples were correlated with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and proximate and ultimate analyses using linear regression. The Wits-Ehac Index classification results show that the samples were between medium and high risk. The linear regression analysis showed very poor correlations between the Wits-Ehac Index results and the XRF and proximate and ultimate results. The most valuable relationship found is between the presence of relatively high sulphur (greater than 3%) and ground reactivity with nitrate-bearing explosive emulsion.

In the previous chapters we did not concern ourselves with the fact that the geostatistical properties of the regionalized variable x (z) are affected by the size of the support w. Ideally, when analysing an ore body O, we would like to determine the properties of point values in O, i.e. the properties of a regionalized variable with an infinitely small support, say w°. In practice, point values are never known. To measure the value of x at a point z we must take a sample of size w centred at z. For example, if we are interested in the grade at point z, w will be the volume of the sample 'centred in z; if we are interested in the metal accumulation at point z, w will be the area of the cross-section of the sample centred in z. We say that the measured property is a regularized variable, and so the semivariogram (or covariogram) calculated from the values obtained is also regularized. In the majority of the mining problems which can be solved by geostatistical methods, we are interested in the properties of blocks of ore and of samples with a finite non-point support. It will be shown in the following chapters that these problems can be solved by calculating the average value of the point sernivariogram in volumes or areas of finite dimension, or between such volumes or areas. These calculations would be simple if we knew the point semivariogram. This means that the point semivariogram has to be estimated from the observed regularized semivariogram(s).

The surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar were investigated by XPS, zeta potential measurements and first principle calculation. The results indicated that the zeta potential of feldspar was more negative than that of spodumene. The most possible active sites on spodumene and feldspar were Al sites and O sites. However, the number, type and activity of these sites were different. The flotation behaviour of five new collectors (cationic collector decyloxy-propyl-amine (DPA), anionic collector α-bromododecanoic acid (α-BDDA), N-Dodecyliminodiacetic acid (DIDA), and mixed collector DPA-BDDA and DPA-DIDA) were investigated through micro flotation experiments and analysed based on the surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar. The results revealed that cationic collector DPA processed a high collecting capacity for both minerals. The highest recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 91.60% and 95.30% respectively. The anionic collector α-BDDA and DIDA showed poor flotation behaviour. The recovery of spodumene and feldspar when using α-BDDA as collector was less than 5% and when using DIDA as collector was less than 1%. For the mixed collector DPA-BDDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 82.27% and 32.61% respectively at pH 4.5. For mixed collector DPA-DIDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 35.69% and 9.08% respectively at pH 5.8. The results indicated that the cationic collector had high collecting capacity, but low selectivity. The collecting capacity of anionic collector for spodumene and feldspar was poor at the same concentration compared with cationic collectors. Mixed collector DPA-BDDA showed good flotation behaviour and selectivity on spodumene. The ―COO- in mixed collector might improve the selectivity. However, too much ―COO- would increase the electrostatic repulsion, which might cause low selectively and poor recovery. Kamoto Copper Company is a copper cobalt mining company established in Lualaba Province of Democratic Republic of Congo under a Joint Venture between Glencore PLC and Gecamines (the state-owned mining company). Operations consist of underground and open pit mines, a concentrator producing sulfide concentrate and oxide ores milled slurry, and a hydrometallurgy plant producing copper cathode and cobalt hydroxides from concentrate and ores. The production capacity is 300 k/a of copper cathode and 35 kt/a of cobalt hydroxide. Since Q4 2020, the Luilu hydrometallurgy plant has experienced operational instabilities due to increase in proportion of dolomite in the ore mined and fed to the plant. This was diagnosed by the significant increase in calcium grade in ore and acid consumption, continuous foaming, and overflow of tanks with subsequent adverse impact on equipment availability due to corrosion caused by acidic spills, structure integrity, and safety concerns around the acidic slurry spills. Production was adversely impact due above equipment availability and often throughput restriction to mitigate the foaming and overflows. A high gangue-acid-consuming ore management programme was developed with the aim of mitigating these impacts. The programme included: (i) use of defoamer agent in leach to stop foaming and overflow, (ii) design of a mechanical solution to leach foaming and overflow, and (iii) froth flotation for copper and cobalt minerals separation from dolomite. Only option (i) is presented in this paper. Through laboratory testwork, pilot-plant testing, plant trial, and full plant implementation, Kamoto Copper successfully implemented a defoamer agent (Kemfoam X9980) dosing at leach, resulting in significant reduction in foaming and overflow of leach reactors and countercurrent decantation thickeners. The optimum defoamer dose rate obtained was 20 mg/L. Since then, the Luilu recovered its operational stability, the corrosion of critical equipment ceased, and availability improved as the acidic leach slurry spills ceased. The constraint on throughput due to leach foaming was addressed and the frequency of sliming events in the thickeners was significantly reduced as the foaming on the supernatant surface ceased, with subsequent significant reduction in interfacial crud in solvent extraction.
