The Tromp distribution curve was used in an evaluation of gravity separators treating a synthetic ore made up of silica and marker minerals of various relative densities. The results pinpoint differences in the concentration of particles of different sizes, and indicate how the grade of a concentrate is likely to vary with particle size. An increase in the feed rate increased the efficiency of the 'waterless' spiral concentrator that was tested, but the multiport spiral concentrator tested was more efficient. Both spiral concentrators were found to be more efficient than the pinched sluice and the shaking table that were tested. The method was found to be a useful way of evaluating gravity concentrators, but, for ease of analysis, care must be taken in the choice of marker minerals.

Although it is often said that South Africa does not have suitable deposits, or the potential to develop mines on a small scale, a recent survey by the Chamber of Mines1 showed that, out of a sample of 641 producers, 41 per cent had between 10 and 19 employees, and a further 29 per cent had between 20 and 29 employees. This goes to show that minerals-related small, medium, and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) do exist, and can play an important role in the development of rural industries in South Africa. Nchaka Moloi of the Department for Mineral and Energy Affairs defined the various categories of SMMEsas shown in Table I2. An enterprise could be placed in a certain category as long as two of the variables, employees, capex or production applied.

Without minerals, man cannot possibly hope to maintain his present standard of living. Professional mining men throughout the world, particularly in mineral-exporting countries like South Africa, are faced with the increasingly difficult task of ensuring adequate supplies of minerals. The problems of gradually diminishing mineral reserves and rapidly rising mining costs can to a certain extent be overcome by the use of more-sophisticated technological techniques and by the improvement of efficiency wherever possible. However, there is growing concern in some quarters, that, despite the ingenuity of engineers, geologists, metallurgists, and scientists, the earth's mineral reserves will eventually become insufficient to meet man's needs. In order to ensure the continued well-being of the earth's population, it is therefore imperative that more attention should be paid to mineral research and the training of specialists in the field of mineral reclamation.

A description is given of the extraction of pillars in a seam of coal which normally varies in thickness from 10 feet to 14 feet using conventional trackless mechanised units. By using the pocket and fender method of pillar extraction, the high capital cost of hydraulic supports is eliminated, and a volumetric extraction of 85% to 90% of the seam of coal is possible. This method of mining opens up the possibility of extracting vast tonnages of coal which hitherto would have been left in situ as pillars. The major benefits likely to accrue from this technique are seen as follows: 1. Greater volumetric extraction of the seam; 2. Longer panel life with less frequent transferring of sections; 3. Preservation of our natural resources. The authors deal with the history of this development at Springfield Colliery, discuss the present results and outline the future trends in the light of current experience.

On the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the South African School of Mines, this paper presents a historical review of the tertiary mining education carried out by the School of Mines in Kimberley and the subsequent institutions in Johannesburg. In addition to recording and evaluating a century of mining education, it describes the current activities of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is believed to be the natural successor to the School of Mines. The comparison of earlier and contemporary academic mining activities reflects a gradual transition from the educational philosophy and objectives of a school of mines to those of a modem university department. In the conclusions, some aspects of the educational effort expended during the past hundred years are briefly highlighted.

Statistical valuation of diamondiferous deposits By H. S. SICHEL, D.Sc The valuation of diamondiferous deposits depends on (i) the density distribution, (ii) the size distribution of stones and (iii) the selling price structure prevailing at a particular time. In the density distribution the stochastic variable is defined as the number of individual stones found per sample unit irrespective of the stone size. The density distribution is discrete and allows for barren sample units. As diamonds often occur in clusters, a Poisson mixture distribution is derived which is entirely new, as existing discrete distributions cannot represent the stone number frequencies found in nature. For the sizes of diamonds, which are measured by weight, a new compound logarithmic normal distribution is developed. Combination of (i), (il) and (iii) leads to a meaningful appraisal of diamondiferous ground expressed in monetary value per production unit of mining. Finally, confidence limits are calculated which allow for inferences from sampling to recovery.

In this publication he identified the need for a basic, simple book on miningpractice to provide new students of mining with a backgroundto their studies. He also designed the book to providea background to persons operating on the fringesof the industry such as students of economics and journalists.The text extends to only some 120 pages, and containsa sufficient number of monochrome sketches, diagrams,and photographs. It is written in a straight-forward, easyto-read style. The book contains an index and elementarytable of conversion from imperial to SI (metric) units,and there is also a glossary of mining terms that mostreaders would find useful.The author has succeeded in keeping the contentssimple, as indicated by the title. However, after each chapter, there are references to further recommendedreading. The book could be useful in the South African context, although the coverage of coal and opencast mining operations is slender.

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office. This paper presents a quantitative approach to the problem of determining design capacity and field dimensions of underground coal mines using room- and-pillar mining systems. In evaluating these design variables, relationships among mining costs, number of production sections in mines, location of central shafts, mine field dimensions, section production, mine output, and cost of production losses due to underground man-traveling are analyzed. Thereby the unit cost of coal is expressed as a function of the design variables as well as input parameters such as seam angle, seam thickness, seam depth, underground traveling speed of men, mine recovery and plant recovery. The problem is then formulated as a nonlinear optimization model in terms of minimizing the unit cost of coal subject to a set of constraints and solved analytically for flat seams and numerically for inclined seams. Sensitivity analysis of the variables is also included in the paper.

The Stilfontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines, near Klerksdorp in the Transvaal, had accumulated a large amount of uranium-containing residue and, when the price of uranium rose in the 1970s, consideration was given to the possible recovery of this uranium. Preliminary tests showed that concentration of the uranium prior to leaching would not be economic. However, the pyrite in the residue could be concentrated by flotation, and the flotation concentrate could be roasted to pro¬vide both enough acid for leaching the uranium and a calcine from which the gold could be recovered. The feasibility study showed that a uranium operation of 270 kt per month would be most economically attrac¬tive, and a plant of that size was accordingly designed and built. In the first six years of its existence, the plant treated over 20 Mt of residue and produced about 3,5 kt of uranium oxide. During that time, the plant was con¬tinually being improved to make it more reliable and cost-efficient. This paper analyses the operation of the plant during its first six years from the viewpoints of its mechanical, process, and economic performance. The criteria on which the selection of the process was based are reviewed and compared with the actual performance of the plant, emphasis being placed on the leaching, solid-liquid separation, recovery, and purification stages.

In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

The optimal design of production phases and ultimate pit limit for an open pit mining operation may be generated using conventional or stochastic approaches. Unlike the conventional approach, the stochastic framework accounts for expected variability and uncertainty in metal content by considering a set of equally probable realizations (models) of the orebody. This paper evaluates the performance of a new stochastic network flow approach for the development of optimal phase design and ultimate pit limit using a gold deposit as the case study. The stochastic and conventional frameworks as considered here utilize the maximum flow and Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithms, respectively. The LG algorithm is restricted to considering an estimated (average-type) orebody model, while the stochastic maximum flow algorithm is developed to simultaneously use a set of simulated orebody realizations as an input. The case study demonstrates that, when compared to the conventional LG algorithm as used in the industry, the stochastic approach generates a 30 per cent increase in discounted cash flow, a21 per cent larger ultimate pit limit, and about 7 per cent more metal, while it maintains a consistency in phase size.

Many minerals processing operations result in crushed rock being mixed with a liquid. Sometimes, the rock particles have to be dried before the next process begins and there may be a considerable distance between the equipment carrying out these processes. Bateman Engineered Technologies (BET) developed, patented and commercialized a method of simultaneous pneumatic conveying and drying. A joint project to assist with optimizing the process is under-way. Part of it is a numerical simulation of the process. The simulation is done using a dedicated program written in MATLAB, (commercial software which is widely used in engineering). It accounts for heat and mass transfer as well as particle transport. The main part of the program consists of a loop containing a series of equations which are evaluated sequentially. During any particular iteration, the properties are changed one at a time. Since the properties are changing relatively slowly, this method gives good results. The outputs of the simulation are consistent with the operational experience of BET’s engineers. The output is very comprehensive and all numerical. Since the program is currently being used for research purposes, flexibility is very important. Thus the output is converted into a spreadsheet file. Variations in the output quantities are displayed graphically using MS Excel. Some simulation could have been done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The advantages and disadvantages (technical, financial and skills requirements) of the two approaches for this particular type of simulation are compared briefly. South Africa is amongst the 40 driest counties in the world, with extreme weather conditions and beset by both droughts and floods. Coupled with economic growth is an increased demand on water resources and, as with all other industrial developments, mining requires large volumes of water, which is likely to have an impact on the environment. Further to this, the mining industry also realizes that minerals are a non-renewable resource and the contribution to wealth creation from mineral extraction is not everlasting. It serves as an economic boost and careful planning is required to ensure that the legacy of mining is sustainable, and that some of the returns from mining provide continual economic and social prosperity.

Generally, regrind circuits are used to increase the degree of liberation of value minerals which are fed to flotation circuits. At the regrind circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex, four ball mills are in closed circuit with their hydrocyclone clusters. In the initial design of the plant, feed and underflow percent solids, and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones were 39% and 65%, and 15psi, respectively. Over the years, due to a reduction in the feed grade from 1.17% to 0.67% and changes in the operational conditions, the feed rate to each hydrocyclone cluster has decreased from 401 to 70t/h and consequently the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids have reduced to 4psi, 17% and 25%, respectively. The main objective of this research was to audit the feed solids concentration and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones and make the necessary modifications based on the Plitt’s model. The results of sampling showed that water recovery to underflow was 59% which was higher than normal values. By reducing the number of operating regrind mills from 4 to 2, the feed rate to each mill increased. After this modification and taking necessary measures in the plant to implement the new operating approach, the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids increased to 18psi, 28% and 58%, respectively. The water recovery of the hydrocyclones underflow decreased from 59% to 12%. These changes in addition to increasing the circuit efficiency saved 1000 kWh energy and decreased ball consumption by 925 ton/year because of reduction in the number of operating ball mills. In this work we have reviewed methods to classify corrosivity of ground waters. Weight loss and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) corrosion tests have been done for rebar and steel strand. No clear indication of SCC was found. The application of tensile stress to 85 % of yield strength increased general corrosion rate significantly in very corrosive waters. The effect of corrosion protection on the axial behavior of steel strands was determined by double pipe axial tests with different embedment lengths. The results showed a significant difference on behavior between epoxy-coated steel strands, galvanized steel strands and plain steel strand. Dans la présente étude, nous avons passé en revue des méthodes permettant de classifier la corrosivité des eaux souterraines. Des tests portant sur les pertes de poids et sur la corrosion FCC (la fissuration par corrosion sous contrainte) ont été effectués pour les barres d’armature et les torons. Aucune indication nette de FCC n’a été constatée. L’application d’une contrainte de traction allant jusqu’à 85 % de la limite d’élasticité a accru de manière significative la vitesse générale de corrosion dans les eaux très corrosives. L’effet de la protection contre la corrosion sur le comportement axial des torons en acier a été déterminé au moyen de tests axiaux à double tube avec des longueurs d’enrobage différentes. Les résultats ont mis en évidence une différence significative quant au comportement entre les torons en acier à revêtement époxy, les torons en acier galvanisés et les torons en acier standard. In dieser Arbeit haben wir Methoden geprüft, die korrosive Wirkung des Grundwassers einstufen. Gewichtsverlust- und SCC-Korrosionstests wurden für Stahlstäbe und Drahtlitzen durchgeführt. Es wurden keine sicheren Hinweise auf Spannungsrisskorrosionsbrüche gefunden. Bei Anwendung einer Dehnbelastung von 85 % der Streckspannung bzw.Ergebnisstärke stieg die allgemeine Korrosionsrate in stark korrosivem Wasser deutlich an. Die Wirkung des Korrosionschutzes bei axialem Verhalten von Stahldrahtlitzen wurde durch axiale Tests an Doppelleitungen unterschiedlicher Versenkungslänge determiniert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten im direkten Vergleich von epoxidbeschichteten, galvanisierten und normalen Stahldrahtlitzen beachtliche Unterschiede im Verhalten auf.

A study of the dissolution of gold from a pyrite concentrate and from various calcines is reported. The percentage extraction of gold was found to decrease with increasing sulphur content in the material leached because of the porosity of the materials, and particularly because of the passivation of the anodic dissolution of gold when the gold was In contact with other conducting minerals. This is explained in terms of the current-potential curves for the oxidation of gold and the reduction of dissolved oxygen.
