Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

INTRODUCTION "When there is an economic need for cleaning fine coal to low ash, the technical difficulties will be solved. The utilization of fines below 28 mesh will determine the degree to which beneficiation will be carried. Whenever these "fines" will be processed into smokeless fuels or used as new materials for the chemical industry or for hydrogenation, a higher degree of cleaning will be economically justified”.(l) This quote from the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation correctly anticipates the use of fines as "smokeless" fuel or as a future component of boiler fuel and a1 so as a raw material for the chemical industry or possible new uses such as for internal combustion engines. Fines utilization depends upon an economic need and possibly neglects to say an environmental need or a government funded development program as the prime mover for development. In any event, this conference is faced with the "need" to beneficiate fine coal and undoubtedly among the processes that will be discussed are the unit processes of future coal preparation facilities. HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT It is interesting to look at where we have been, where we are now and where we possibly will be in the future. In order to put some limitations on this presentation, we will for the most part confine our remarks to this century and particularly developments since World War II. We also will limit our remarks to the preparation of bituminous coals in the United States, and for the most part, to wet processes. In the 1943 edition of Coal Preparation, clues to the processes being used to beneficiate coal are contained in the Chapter Titles. An extensive treatment of "Hand Picking" was contained in Chapter 8. Chapter 7 contained a description of methods for "Preparation at the Face". Chapter 18 dealt with "Slurries, Sludges, Slimes and Water Treatment" and defined this size of coal as being the size at which "Jigs and Chance Cones are usually dispensed with and other methods such as the hydrator, tables, and froth flotation are employed. Generally the limit is 1.7mm to 3.4mm. In the days before World War I1 the then modern bituminous coal preparation plant contained jigs or Chance Cones for the coarse material +6.35mm, concentrating tables, launders or some classifier type of coal washer for the fines (6.35 x 0.15mm), and froth flotation as the only method of cleaning minus 0.15mm coal which was used very sparingly.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation's miners.

1. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) is a computer based model whose objective is to quantify the risks of hard rock tunneling in terms of cost and time to completion. The main feature of the TCM is the simulation of the tunnel construction. The simulation makes it possible to incorporate in the time and cost computations the effect of uncertainties in geologic conditions and in productivity rates and costs. The cost and time computed with the TCM will be in form of distributions that allow a quantitative risk assessment. The TCM will be useful as an estimating tool permitting the estimator to rigorously relate uncertainties of individual factors to the end result. The TCM will also make it possible to evaluate technological innovations and to identify problem areas in existing technologies. The TCM consists of three interacting submodels: the geologic submodel, the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator. The goal of this paper is to describe the geologic submodel, whereas the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator will be described in the following paper by Moavenzadeh et al. First it will be shown how interactions between the geologic submodel and other parts of the TCM will impose certain requirements on the geologic submodel. These requirements, which relate primarily to the description of geologic conditions by a set of problem-oriented parameters and the quantification of uncertainty associated with geologic conditions, will then be discussed. Agglomeration for the heap leaching of gold and silver ores is the process of attaching fine ore particles-less than 150 µm (100 mesh)-to coarser particles. The fines are thus immobilized and uniformly distributed throughout the heap. This is needed to make heaps more porous and uniformly permeable to the flow of a leaching solution. This article describes liquids and binders used to form agglomerates. Agglomeration techniques and equipment are also described. These include drum and disk agglomerators, stockpile and belt agglomeration, and the use of vibrating deck and reverse-running conveyors. The need for agglomeration The main reason for agglomerating heap leachable ores is to prevent percolation problems in a heap. This is different than pelletizing iron ore. In the latter case, the purpose is to bond very finely ground material into coarser, strong particles. These particles can then withstand the rigors of transportation and the loading forces in a blast furnace. Most percolation problems in heaps are caused by the segregation of coarse and fine particles during heap construction. This segregation creates areas with significantly lower permeability because fines plug the channels between coarse particles. Consequently, the leach solutions are subject to channeling, following the path of least resistance. They percolate downward through the coarse ore areas and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines. This results in lower extraction, longer leach time, and higher reagent consumption. Permeability problems in heap leaching are compounded because of the vertical migration of fine particles after the heap has been built. These fines eventually accumulate in pockets or layers and impede uniform solution flow. The fines move because they are not attached to a coarser particle. Moreover, the sluicing action of leach solution flowing over the surface of particles may break the bond between fine and coarse particles. Some fines are also created by the decomposition of ores after being wetted. Percolation problems are minimized if the fines can be attached to the coarser particles. Fines are thus uniformly distributed and rendered immobile within the heap. Heinen (1979) conducted comparative tests of nonagglomerated and agglomerated gold and silver ores. He showed that percolation rates through agglomerated material usually are improved by 10 to 100 times. This reduces leach time for economic recovery to less than one-third of that for nonagglomerated material, and total recovery may be increased. Cyanide consumption is also reduced in most cases because of the shortened leach time. Even run of mine (ROM) ore should be agglomerated. This can be achieved with moderate success by passing each truckload of ore under a water spray to bring total moisture of the ore up to about 8% to 10%. The ROM ore will mix when the ore is dumped, when it cascades down the slope of a heap, or when it is pushed up with a dozer. Overall, agglomeration allows low-cost heap leaching technology be applied to gold and silver ores and tailings that could not be economically processed by conventional methods, according to Phariss (1982). How agglomeration works Agglomeration means that the clays and fine particles contained in the ore adhere to the coarser particles. This creates a coating of fines around the coarse particles. When the ore has few fines and the percolation problems are not severe, the addition of a liquid may be all that is necessary to make the few fines adhere to coarser particles. However, when the quantity of fines is substantial, e.g., +10% -75 µm (-200 mesh), a binding agent may be needed. Sillmats are structural elements upon which the safety and economics of underfill mining or sill pillar recovery in stopes of moderate width with steeply dipping ore zones, depend. The traditional stability design of cemented sillmats appears to have developed from experience and from standard static physical model tests such as uniaxial and triaxial compression. Such standard static physical model testing approach arrives at some approximate parameters, normally used to describe or predict the behaviour of sillmats in analytical or numerical models. This approach offers inherent limitations and generally results in conservative designs. Centrifuge modeling studies are combined with numerical modeling in this paper to provide insights into sillmat strength behaviour. The results of both modeling techniques suggest that, in stopes with smooth rock wall conditions, sillmat failure is driven by the fill self-weight and has minimum dependency on the fill binder content. In stopes with rough rock wall conditions, however, the wall roughness contributes significantly to the stability of the sillmat during underfill mining. This study indicates that the stability of paste fill sillmats can be designed with confidence using centrifuge physical modeling in combination with numerical modeling.

Approximately 10 to 20 pct of exhaust aerosol mass from diesel equipped vehicles operating without exhaust controls is attributable to particles in the 1.0-10 µm size range. Recent in-mine measurements suggest that, in addition to reducing overall exhaust aerosol mass concentrations, the use of waterbath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) may significantly reduce the concentration of diesel exhaust particles larger than approximately 0.5 µm aerodynamic diameter. This implies that a measurement system that discriminates between diesel and mineral dust aerosols on the basis of aerosol size would have different accuracies depending on use of a water scrubber. To test this hypothesis, laboratory measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine diesel exhaust aerosol penetration efficiency through a water scrubber as a function of size and engine operating conditions. Size distributions were determined using a Micro-Orifice, Uniform Deposit Impactor. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO x, O2 and gas-phase hydrocarbon concentrations were also measured. No significant effect was found for these gases other than a slight decrease in NOx emissions. The water scrubber served as a moderate aerosol control with reductions in mass concentrations of about 29±9 pct under most conditions. This reduction occurred for particles less than 0.2 µm and greater than 0.6 µm aerodynamic diameter. Coal dust aerosols are mostly larger than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter. With use of a water scrubber, separating the aerosol into two parts, greater and less than about 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter during sampling, results in collection of diesel and coal dust aerosol accurate to within 10 pct. Without a water scrubber in operation, such a sampling protocol would only be accurate to approximately 15 pct.

The last 10 years have seen a dramatic increase in the requirements for product coal quality control. This has led to electric utility sulfur scrubbing, metallurgical blast furnace optimization and coal producer blend and yield optimization. To achieve this improved level of control, coal producers are designing facilities that emphasize new technology. New facilities will be designed and existing facilities will be retrofitted with state-of-the-art technology to meet quality control standards that are dictated by the market. The first step in designing for process control requires the identification of those parameters to be controlled and the upsets that can cause variances in the final shipped product quality. The most common parameters that require control are the surface moisture (%), ash (%), pyritic sulfur (%) and gross calorific value (Btu). Total moisture is that moisture that exists on the surface of the particle and is inherent in the particle itself. For the purposes of control, the total moisture is monitored, while surface moisture is controlled. Ash is the inorganic residue remaining after all other constituents are burned away at 75O°C( 1382°F)(ASTM, 1992). Sulfur is the amount of total sulfur that exists either as pyrite (FeS2), inorganic sulfate (FeS04), or organic sulfates (C4H4S) (Leonard, 1979). Currently, pyrite is controlled and total sulfur is monitored. The gross calorific value is the amount of heat produced when a unit quantity of coal is ignited under specified conditions. In this case, a l-g (0.03-oz.) sample of coal is ignited in an isoperibol waterbath and the temperature rise of the water bath is observed. The moisture and ash-free (MAF) Btu is relatively constant for a given seam, resulting in the whole calorific value being a function of the moisture and ash levels (Leonard, 1979).

Alunorte is a metallurgical-grade alumina refinery located in northern Brazil. This plant which was designed to produce 1.1 million mtpy of calcined alumina, started operation in July 1995. A process information system was installed before refinery start-up. It has been a main factor in process improvements, which resulted in an increase in production from 1.1 to 1.5 million mtpy. This system has been particularly useful for analyzing data and allowing retrieval of data by process engineers. This paper describes how a quality monitoring system to evaluate all aspects and stages of production, as well as alumina silo level and blending percentage, was developed. This system was designed to give support to ISO 9002 certification, which happened in December 1998. The quality monitoring system was developed using Microsoft Excel 7.0 and makes extensive use of VBA macro. The primary users of the system are shift foremen, managers and engineers, who use it to track the process and avoid variations in alumina quality.

"In the mineral processing, clay minerals have negative effects on the flotation of valuable minerals. In this study, we investigated how the floatability of malachite (CuCO3·Cu(OH)2) is affected by presence of the clay minerals in the fundamental aspects. Flotation experiments were conducted by using Na2S and PAX (potassium amyl xanthate), and the floatability of malachite was compared between the cases in the presence and absence of clay minerals. The results showed that floatability was greater in the absence of clay minerals than in the presence of clay minerals and decreased with increasing weight percent of kaolinite under same conditions applied. In addition to examine how clay minerals affect malachite floatability, we conducted flotation experiment with changing clay adding order. The results indeed showed that malachite floatability was affected by clay adding sequence. INTRODUCTION The demand of copper is growing as industrial development increases, but mineral resources are limited. Therefore, studies for Cu oxide flotation are being conducted to improve their recovery(1-3). However the mining industry is well aware of the difficulty in treating copper ores in the presence of clay minerals(4). Clay minerals have unique properties and these properties may affect flotation. In the previous studies, the effect of slime coating of clay minerals on flotation was investigated(4-6). For example, Zhao and Peng (2014), Peng and Zhao (2015), and Arnold and Aplan (1986) found that clay slime coating on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and coal surfaces through the electrostatic attraction reduced surface hydrophobicity and then depressed the flotation. Other researchers have also reported clay minerals have impact on pulp rheology. Especially in the case of bentonite, pulp viscosity increased with increasing amount of bentonite and the higher pulp viscosity have deleterious effect on copper recovery(7, 8). However, these studies only focus on slime coatings and pulp rheological behavior. Forbes et al. attempted to decoupling rheology and slime coatings effect on flotation but this study has limitation that individual role of two clay species either attached to mineral or suspended in bulk solution was excluded(9). Hence, in this study, we aimed to investigating the effects of individual clay (suspended and attached) on malachite flotation."

Mineral carbonation is the reaction of carbon dioxide with mineral silicates to form solid, carbonate compounds. The carbonate ion holds carbon in a low energy state – lower than in carbon dioxide. Thus the reaction of carbon dioxide to produce mineral carbonates captures the carbon in a stable, solid form. The University of Utah is investigating the carbonation of silicate minerals by mechanochemical processing, which has the potential of being much less expensive than other methods. Tests to date have shown that a marked change takes place in the lizardite variety of serpentine after 15 to 20 minutes of intense grinding in the presence of gaseous CO2. Further testing is in progress.

Engelhard Corporation is one of the leading producers of kaolin based products in the world, having acquired the assets of Freeport Kaolin company in 1985. Much of the production technology used in the kaolin industry was pioneered by Engelhard and Freeport, including Ultraflotation for improving product brightness, delamination to produce kaolin platelet products, calcination to produce ANSILEX® high opacity titanium dioxide pigment extender and pipeline slurry operations to economically transport kaolin from the mine to beneficiation facilities. Engelhard traces its roots back to 1870 when the Edgar family discovered kaolin behind their property in Bonhamtown, New Jersey. Today the company produces the broadest line of premium coating pigments with extensive sales throughout the world. The international scope of the company's business has led Engelhard to evaluate kaolin deposits throughout the world as possible grass roots production sites. Most kaolin products are used in the paper industry -- the largest volume end-user 80% of the total market -- as filler and coating pigments. Lower volume specialized applications include fillers and reinforcements for plastics and TiO2 extender pigments for paints and coatings.

Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

Since 1964, the US Bureau of Mines has been conducting a comprehensive program of research on the origin and control of coal bed gas. Several extensive databases have been developed during the work representing information from every major coal producing region in the United States. Gas content measurements have been made on 885 coal samples from 15 states representing 221 coal beds. Records indicate that the range of gas content varies from zero to over 640 ft3 per ton (20 cm3 per gm). During the conduct of the research program, several drilling and completion techniques have been developed or refined to divert and collect coal bed gas before it enters the mine environment. Such techniques include horizontal, cross-measure and vertical boreholes. Samples of gas collected from boreholes drilled under the program indicate that the primary gas constituent is methane which comprises 97 pct, the remaining hydrocarbons make up approximately 0.2 pct. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide account for the majority of the remaining gases at average concentrations of 1 pct each. Surveys have been made on the total daily gas emissions from underground coal mines. In fact, the most recent survey indicates that 180 mines had emissions in excess of 100 Mft3 per day (2.8 Mm3 per day). Furthermore, total mine emissions were in excess of 300 MMft3 per day (8493 Mm3 per day). An analysis of the data showed that there appears to be no relationship between in-place gas content and coal bed gas composition. Furthermore, no correlation was observed between in- place gas content and daily mine emissions. In a general sense, the higher the gas content the higher the relative gas emissions. Perhaps a more direct relationship would be observed if more complete emissions information (including gob gas borehole production) was available.

Underground coal mining systems have kept pace with developments that have occurred in other types of mining. A diversified group of machines are now available with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology, and numerous options to satisfy miners' needs in various geological environments. The results will be a greater degree of mechanization and recovery of coal from inclined seams, thins seams, and seams mined in lifts from shallow as well as deeper deposits. This article is based on a general suvey carried out by the authors to detemine the current status of mechaniztion and systems development in underground coal mining. It indicates that the next two decades will see increasing use of longwall mining, which has already reached a high degree of sophistication. Automation, remote control, and robotics are the key words of the future. Data transmission from underground to surface and over long distances will be almost routine. Many components of the high technology industry that are just being considered by the mining industry regarding equipment health and perform¬ance monitoring, quality control, application of expert systems, and computer networking will become a routine part of underground mining technology. Within the next 21 years, "manless" mining, first attempted about 25 years ago, will become a reality. Current coal face developments Developments in underground mining equipment, its application, and associated technology have made phenomenal progress compared to those in other types of mining. Room-and-pillar systems, on one hand, and longwall mining, on the other, have sophisticated equipment at their disposal. Both of these systems have become highly productive, with output per manshift about 50% higher than that achieved a decade ago. At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation has used diesel face haulage and support equipment at its dual-seam Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois since production activities commenced in 1983. The mine began production from its lower seam, the Harrisburg No. 5 coal seam, in October 1983 and from the upper Herrin No.6 coal seam in April 1985. Before production began, the company developed a program designed to make use of the flexibility offered by diesel equipment. While productivity was an important goal, the top priority of the program was to provide a safe and healthy work environment for the miners. Management believed that high productivity would naturally follow. History has proven this belief to be true.
