Gold, like no other metal, has a fascinating and special place in the world. It is used in a range of every day applications essential to modern life. Gold has long been considered the most precious metal in the world. Gold is used mainly for making jewellery as well as for dentistry, adornments on building and artistic expression. For thousands of years it has been used as an ornament of kings, a currency and standard for global currencies, and more recently, in a wide range of electronic devices and medical applications. Gold?s many unique properties have secured in a central role in history and human development. Today, more often than not, gold is extracted from ores. It occurs in vein and alluvial deposits and is often separated from rocks and other minerals by mining and processing operations. Some of these processes cause environmental concern (cyanidation, amalgamation, roasting). Besides primary gold ore resources, a series of secondary resources can be taken into account and processed for gold and silver recovery. There are two main types of waste produced. The first type is process waste, which includes tailing consisting of processing residues and waste rock. The other type is refuse from other different processes and recyclable materials. Among other secondary resources and/or by-products containing precious metals, which have been studied some processes and technologies with low ecological impact are presented in this paper. Heaps and tailing ponds resulted from gold-bearing ore exploitation and processing, refractory gold-bearing pyrite concentrates, slag resulted from electrolytic slime melting, gold-bearing chlorous slime are taken into account. In order to establish environmental friendly technologies for precious metals recovery from these secondary resources, laboratory experiments have been carried out on a pilot scale and in some cases on semi-industrial scale by applying specific technological processes, namely hydro-gravitational concentration, bio-oxidation, non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation (microwaves), solubilization without utilizing cyanide and gold recovery by ion-exchange resin. This paper presents the research results, technological principles as well as the possibilities of applying combined processes in order to treat different secondary gold-bearing resources.

Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, WY trona district since August 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the amount of relatively expensive development mining and improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning in April 1987. As of June 1988, four shortwall panels had been completed using the advancing tailgate, producing more than 739 kt (815,000 st). This paper discusses the effects of the advancing tailgate on shortwall production, development mining requirements, costs, strata mechanics, and ventilation. Shortwall mining is a hybrid extraction method combining the self-advancing hydraulic roof supports from longwall mining and continuous mining machines (Fig. 1). The technique has been only marginally successful at the majority of the nearly 20 installations worldwide. At present, the face at Tg Soda Ash Inc. is the only shortwall operating in the United States and the only noncoal shortwall in existence. Despite the method's record of limited success, the staff at Tg Soda Ash determined that the conditions in its trona mine were well suited for shortwall mining. The commitment to install a shortwall was made in late 1981 and the first panel commenced in August 1982. Between that time and June 1988, about 3.33 Mt (3.67 million st) of trona have been mined with the system from 15 panels. Annual average productivities have ranged from 818 t/shift (902 st per shift) in 1982 to 1.4 kt/t shift (1591 st per shift) in 1987. Overall, the system has produced an average of 1.3 kt/ shift (1450 st per shift). In April 1987, a method of mining the return air tailgate during shortwall retreat was tested (Fig. 2). The objective was to determine if a return airway could be established and maintained by mining a series of rooms and pillars about 7.6 m (25 ft) past the face support line. The method would allow a barrier pillar to be left between shortwall panels without requiring the mining of a separate return air tailgate.

The fluidized bed was invented by Fritz Winkler of Germany in 1921. The first application in the U.S. was in the development of the fluidized bed catalytic cracking of petroleum in 1942. Today, fluid bed cracking reactors are an integral part of every oil refinery. When fluid bed technology was first considered for applications outside the petroleum industry it was recognized to have uniform temperature, close control of the gaseous atmosphere and excellent mixing between solids and gases. Roasting of sulfide ores and concentrates was an obvious match. The first application was a single stage roaster for gold refining in 1947. There have been over four hundred commercial fluid bed roasters built and operated successfully in the four decades since the fluid bed was invented. There are three general categories of roasting applications. The largest number of roasters fall into the dead roasting category which includes gold ore roasters. The other categories are sulfating roasters and partial roasters (Reference 1).

The Eureka Mine is situated in the Guruve district of Zimbabwe, some 150 km north of Harare. The mine was first worked in 1895 and until recently was operated as a typical Zimbabwean "smallworking" with a single owner­operator and small labour force mining at up to 50m depth and processing 50 tonnes per day of ore via grind, gravity recovery and CIP. The gravity circuit comprised a Knelson 12" Centre discharge Concentrator from which a significant but variable portion of production was recovered. In 1996 exploration was commenced by Delta Gold Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd (DGZ), a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Gold NL of Australia, with the aim of testing mineralisation and establishing a large-scale open pit operation. A feasibility study was completed in April 1998. Construction began in August 1998 and first gold was poured in June 1999. The mine is designed to produce 65 000 oz/annum of gold from 1.5 million tonnes of opencast ore grading 2 git Au.

Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. (KACC) had been discharging spent bauxite-generally referred to as red mud-into the Mississippi River for almost 20 years when, in 1972, it agreed to store the waste solids on land. KACC decided to utilize a DREW system (decantation, drainage, and evaporation of water) where the spent bauxite is deposited in a large drying bed, surrounded by a 9-m-high levee. At the bottom of the bed, corrugated, perforated plastic pipe is encased in filter sand. The company built one DREW bed at Gramercy, LA, in 1973 and a second at Baton Rouge in 1974 using draglines, tractors, and rubber-tired scrapers. When a third bed was needed in 1977, the estimated construction cost using draglines was judged too high and KACC personnel began searching for a better, less expensive method for constructing the levee. A bucket-wheel excavator and conveyor system was selected and has proved to be less costly than more traditional earth-moving systems.

The presentation describes the operation and field test results of a seafloor massive sulphide prospecting system. The prospecting system is deployed from a work-class ROV, and it features a new and innovative electromagnetic ocean floor conductivity sensor. It also includes magnetometers, a multibeam sonar, and subsea cameras. The prospecting system has been used in two exploration campaigns - one in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2007 and again in 2008 in both PNG and Tonga waters. The 2007 campaign used the prototype sensor, and the 2008 campaign used a Mark II version. Correlations between drill core samples and EM conductivity results are excellent. New prospecting system data will be used to help plan future core drilling locations. The presentation discusses the principle of operation of the EM conductivity sensor, discusses improvements made in the EM sensor and the overall prospecting system, and shows exploration results. The discovery of the Delbridge massive sulfide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage haloas a lithochemical pathfinder to blind ore, coupled to its location relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy. Systematic sampling of microfractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulfide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 107-m (350-ft) level. This case history is presented in the context of its time and was the first volcanogenic ore deposit to be discovered utilizing mercury as a pathfinder in the Canadian Precambrian. The case history also illustrates that the practical application of an innovative technique coupled to a new geological interpretation can result in success, even on a property that was centrally located in a mining district and had undergone intensive exploration efforts over a 38-year period.

In 1965 Helmut Lerchs and lngo Grossmann presented to the mining community an algorithm to find the optimum design for an open pit mine. In their words, "the objective is to design the contour of a pit so as to maximize the difference between total mine value of the ore extracted and the total extraction cost of of ore and waste." They modeled the problem in graph theoretic terms and showed that an optimal solution of the ultimate pit problem is equivalent to finding the maximum closure of their graph based model. In this paper. we explain how a dual simplex algorithm can be used to solve the same problem. We show how this algorithm is closely related to Lerchs and Grossmann's and how the steps in their algorithm can be viewed in mathematical programming terms. This analysis adds insight to the algorithm of Lerchs and Grossmann and shows how it can be simplified.

Various countries around the world have testing and manufacturing standards in place for steel cord belting. These standards are very comprehensive in what they allow the end user to specify, however, their practical significance in terms of belt life is more difficult to quantify. Such testing standards will be briefly reviewed in this paper in relation to the implication for end user expectancy. Since there is no US standard of manufacture, the end user is left with writing their own specifications. In addition, such standards do not address the effect on belt life of manufacturing faults, such as cord plane buckles, or lateral cord movement. Some new technology used to test steel cord belting will be described as an aid to both manufacturer and end user. Hanging Lake Joint Venture recently excavated two conventional 12.8 m (42 foot) diameter highway tunnels in the difficult ground conditions of Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. This paper outlines the type and success of the various Controlled Blasting Techniques that were used to minimize overbreak in the portal and tunnel excavations. The different Smoothwall and Cushion Charge loads used in the different ground types are described in detail. Delay Timing and Drilling Pattern variations are also discussed.

The term "potash" denotes a family of minerals and compounds of potassium, containing greatly varying percentages of that element. In commercial usage, most of the potash products are used in agriculture, where they are used to furnish potassium, one of the three basic elements for plant growth; the other two being nitrogen and phosphorus. Potassium's contribution to plant life is principally as a stalk strengthener, and if soils can no longer supply this basic element, then crop failure is inevitable without nutrition supplied from fertilization. While agriculture uses some 95 per cent of the potash produced, other industries require highly refined potash, for the manufacture of soaps, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubber, insecticides, photographic film, and other products. Until the mid-nineteenth century, world agriculture had three options related to the potash content of soils: 1) crop rotation and pasturing to attempt to minimize the loss of potash in harvesting, 2) abandoning depleted and exhausted soils (part of the reason for the vast migration of populations in Europe and Asia), and 3) burning forests for the use of the ashes, and concentrating the nutritional value by boiling the ashes in large kettles, for "pot - ash". With the discovery in the mid 1800's and exploitation of potash from underground deposits in Germany, the beginning of the modern potash industry was established, but American potash requirements remained substantially dependent on German production until the 1920's, when oil drilling in the Permian Basin of New Mexico

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines' (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. Squeezing ground conditions in hard-rock tunneling are associated with fault zones containing brecciated rock and gouge. Gouge is a stiff clay-like soil that exhibits a propensity to creep. The ground loads applied to tunnel supports in squeezing ground are known to be significantly time dependent. Accordingly, an experimental and analytical study is presented that deals with soil creep and its application to the prediction of tunnel support requirements in squeezing ground conditions. Relatively undisturbed samples of fault gouge obtained from Straight Creek tunnel in Colorado and Pacheco tunnel in California are classified as very stiff to hard clays of low plasticity. Constant-load undrained triaxial compression tests are performed on these materials. A simple, three-parameter creep equation is developed that adequately describes the observed deformation of fault gouge with respect to applied stress and time. The equation is shown to fit existing creep data of various soil types. The creep equation is used to modify an existing continuum-mechanics solution to the time-dependent behavior of unlined and lined cylindrical openings in a creepsensitive medium under a hydrostatic state of stress. Assuming properties for the medium that are representative of the fault gouge materials tested, parameter studies are performed for unsupported and supported tunnels in squeezing ground. The analyses permit estimates to be made of the steel set supports required for tunnels at different depths in various squeezing ground conditions.

The Chinese city of Shanghai is one of the fastest growing in the world. To keep up with the growth, two tunnels, three-lanes each, are being built beneath the Yangtze River to connect Shanghai with the Changxing River Island. To complete such a large project, Herrenknecht Tunneling Systems was brought in to construct the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The first Herrenknecht S-317 Mixshield has a diameter of 15.43 m (50.62 ft). It was built to construct one of the two 7.2-km (4.5-mile) tunnels. The tunnels are part of the Changjiang Under River Tunnel Project and will be at depths of up to 65 m (213 ft) beneath the Yangtze River in Shanghai-Pudong. These two tunnels are to be opened to traffic in April 2010, in time for Shanghai to host the World Expo. More than 20 million people live in the Shanghai area. The area itself has been growing at an extremely rapid pace for more than a decade and is in need of more space. The search extended beyond the natural limits of the Yangtze River Delta. As part of its incredible growth, 500 new vehicles are registered every day. The new tunnels will connect the Changxing River Island, with a population of approximately 600,000 people to the road traffic network. A bridge construction will also provide a traffic link between Changxing Island and the large island of Chongming.

Judging from the progress made in August 1989, drilling and raise boring of a 400-m (1312-ft) pilot hole at the Elura mine of Pasminco Ltd. in Southeastern Australia, an observer would never guess that the project had been delayed nearly a year. Moreover, two pilot holes had been abandoned in previous attempts. The challenge was to drill a 93-mm (3.66-in.) H size exploration hole between Elura's 400- and 800-m (1312and 2624-ft) levels. The hole needed to be kept within a 300-mm-diam (12-in.diam) target cylinder over the 400 m (1312 ft) distance. The deviation restriction of the initial core hole was necessary to precision ream a pilot hole to 330 mm (13 in.) and then raise bore a 6-m-diam (20-ft-diam) shaft, planned as the primary men and materials access between the two levels. Core was not really necessary to gain an accurate geological picture of the steeply dipping formation. Rather, the core barrel was used because it tended to drill a straighter hole. Using rock bits in the steeply dipping formation would have simply aggravated the problem of deviation. The core barrel and diamond bit optimized the probability of a straighter hole. However, on the first two attempts to drill the pilot hole, the bit was out of the 300-mm (12-in.) target cylinder within the first 50 to 60 m (164 to 197 ft), and the holes were abandoned.

Introduction Compania de Carbones de Chile (Cocar SA) has brought into production Chile's first large-scale, open-pit coal mine, located in the Magellan Province. The US $65 million project includes a 1.1-Mt/a (1.2-million stpy) subbituminous steam coal mine and a mechanized bulk loading marine terminal with water depth sufficient to receive 60 kt (66,000 st) Panamax vessels. The loading terminal will be one of the largest in Chile. The Pecket coal project is expected to save Chile about $40 million in energy production costs and a further $100 million in oil imports, or about 25% of the country's oil import costs. Pecket coal will generate electricity for Codelco and will also supply general electricity needs for northern Chile. The Pecket coalfield is located on the Brunswick Peninsula, about 30 km (19 miles) northeast of Punta Arenas, the provincial capital, as shown in Fig. 1. Pecket is part of a large, coal-bearing basin. It extends from Punta Arenas 250 km (155 miles) north to Puerto Natales and across the border into the Rio Turbio coalfield in Argentina. A fleet of large and small O&K hydraulic shovels and backhoes is used to dig and load overburden and coal into mining trucks while O&K graders maintain the haul roads in and around the pit. INTRODUCTION Observations during construction form an integral part of the design and construction of major underground works. Observations as used herein include visual inspection, detailed geologic mapping, and correlation of geology with support conditions, as well as instrumentation to provide more precise information regarding rock movements and support load. This paper describes the application of an observational program to one of the more difficult design and construction problems underground -- the excavation and support of large chambers at shallow depth in rock of variable quality. Emphasis on underground construction for subways and utilities in urban areas is bringing this problem to increased prominence. It is our intent to focus on the design and construction problems associated with such excavations and to describe observational methods which can be employed to aid in their construction. Observational programs may serve two purposes. One is to monitor the rock and support conditions in order to provide early warning of potential construction problems. Such a program should be routinely used in critical locations on major underground excavations of the type described in this paper. The program should be closely coordinated with the inspection effort and construction control. The other purpose is to provide detailed information regarding the interaction of support conditions and rock displacements to aid in development of more efficient design and construction procedures on later projects. INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. It has been developed over the past two years by a joint team from the Division of Exploration and Mining and the Division of Information Technology, and its principal purpose is to provide a comprehensive and self consistent model of the geometric and topological properties of geological and mining data. The project is being carried out by CSIRO with the support of Australian mining companies through AMIRA (the Australian Mining Industries Research Association). THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. It has been developed over the past two years by a joint team from the Division of Exploration and Mining and the Division of Information Technology, and its principal purpose is to provide a comprehensive and self consistent model of the geometric and topological properties of geological and mining data. The project is being carried out by CSIRO with the support of Australian mining companies through AMIRA (the Australian Mining Industries Research Association). Gwiazda, it makes a highly technical approach to show that the µ factor used by designers of lemniscate-guided roof supports has never really been confirmed as a maximum and assumes that convergence is vertical. Also, the paper does not appear to take into account deflection of structures, which occurs when the lemniscate and base members are fully loaded to their maximum stress level, nor the front to back line of the support in relation to differential roof to floor movements caused by strata movements under pressure. It is not unusual for differential movements to be slightly diagonal to the line of the support, particularly in faulted areas and on gradient faces. The paper also does not take into account consolidation of fines immediately above and below the support. Generally speaking, any differential movement is from face to waste and under these conditions the µ of 0.3, which appears to be an international standard, has worked in practice. However, if the face end of the support is lower than the waste end, then the µ of 0.3 can be considerably increased, giving rise to the damage mentioned in the paper. The ideal design should aim for a slightly forward bias in the lemniscate guide so that the last increment of setting is toward the face, tending to close any fissures that may have developed during the support advance cycle. The support should also be fitted with positive set valves to ensure that a high setting load density is attained to minimize bed separation. As far as powered supports are concerned, convergence is irresistible and all powered supports converge at their rated yield load. A similar principle can be applied to the differential roof to floor movements to drastically reduce the very high forces that would otherwise be applied to the lemniscate structures and pins and that, in turn, are transferred to the base arrangement and floor loading. Any differential movements are usually catered for by the 0.3 µ factor or deflection of structures in the lemniscate guide arrangement and consolidation of the floor. The floor loading, due to differential movement, is in addition to the support convergence load and requires additional bearing area to avoid possible floor penetration. Some seven years ago, Fletcher Sutcliffe Wild Ltd. (FSW) introduced a lemniscate-guided shield support where the lemniscate linkage is connected to the roof bar through two horizontally converging rams to allow differential movement to take place above a given rated figure. This is a known force and can be guarded against, whereas with rigid connections the forces, as yet, are unconfirmed. By careful design, a horizontal force in excess of 6 MN (60 tons) opposes differential movements for a total ram loading of only 2.5 MN (25 tons), or 1.25 MN (12% tons) each. This principle can considerably reduce the length and weight of the support in comparison with a rigid pin-type structure ; also, the yield load rating can be increased without affecting the lemniscate forces. The graph shows the tensile and compressive forces in a lemniscate linkage of a support with and without hydrostore. These forces react into both the roof beam and base members and, as can be seen from the support height to linkage load graph, a considerable reduction in these reactions is gained by the use of the FSW patented hydrostore system. Floor loading is considerably reduced under maximum µ conditions, and by allowing the roof bar to move with the strata, some degree of improvement to strata control is achieved in line with the assumptions in the paper. In practice, these movements have only been in the region of a few millimeters, which, in turn, reflects on the improvements to strata control by the addition of positive set valves. Supports to this design of both 450- and 280-t (496-and 309-st) rating have been successfully used in the United Kingdom for several years, negotiating many faulted areas without one single reported need for repair or maintenance. This includes supports left unattended during the year-long strike, proving the reliability of the system.
