The development of a tool for assessing the environmental sustainability of mining facilities is described in this study. The tool is based on the analysis of basic components of the examined system, i.e., the quantities of the incoming materials and outgoing wastes, their hazardousness and scarcity, the utilization of water and energy resources, and the biodiversity. The developed tool provides both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the environmental performance of a mining facility in a broad time scales (past-present-future) and is easily applicable from non environmental experts. Moreover, relative software is developed to further support the application of the methodology. The implementation of the tool is expected to lead to an improved understanding of the environmental performance of a mining facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. However, based on feedback from industries, a number of shortcomings of the approach have been identified so far and are presented, indicating further actions for the advancement of the proposed tool.

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cuft), tons (/T) (2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.76m3 1 cu ft =0.28m3 1st = 0.9 t7 1 acre = 0.40 ha or m2 In several cases the royalty is a percentage of the finished products, sale price and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified hearing loss as the most common job-related disease in the United States in its 1996 National Occupational Research Agenda. Previous studies by NIOSH have shown operators of surface drill rigs without cabs are commonly exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 90 dB. During hammer-drilling, A-weighted sound levels exceeding 100 dB were recorded at the operator station. NIOSH collaborated with a local drilling company to design and install a partial cab between the operator and the drill steel in an effort to reduce the sound level at the operator station. Sound level measurements in the field show the partial cab reduces the A-weighted sound level by 5-9 dB at the operator’s left ear and 2-5 dB at the operator’s right ear while hammer-drilling. This paper will briefly discuss the preliminary design of a cab and the testing of materials for construction of the prototype. Explanation of the ideas behind the prototype design and fabrication will be covered. Finally, the field test method and results will be discussed in detail.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Introduction and Objective of This Paper Computerized open pit mine models* are more and more used today for feasi¬bility studies as well as for long range mine planning. In fact, using these models is becoming an enforced practice due to various reasons. One main reason is its capacity to evaluate several designs in a fraction of time required by manual effort. Another reason is the necessity to evaluate several. pit designs due to ever decreasing grade of the orebody and increasing financial risk due to smaller profitability margin. In spite of today's accepted use of computer models, very little guidelines are available which the average practitioner can follow either to choose or to build the type of model best suited for his need. Consequently, the objectives of this paper are: 1. To review the current state of the art in the computerized open pit mine models. 2. To provide some suggestions for model selection. 3. To share our experiences in developing a model for a highly irregular copper ore deposit (see Appendix).

Managers always look for systems with minimum hazards. The hazards create problems for performance of projects. The largest and most important hazards of working underground mine can be related to health, safety and environmental, because if one of these sectors be in hazard, maybe lead to close mine. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a widely used quality improvement tool to identify the potential failure modes for measuring reliability of a product or a process. FMEA is performed by developing a risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of severity, occurrence, and detection ratings. On the other hand, with regard to uncertainty in the decision-making, fuzzy theory will be able to model this uncertainty. Fuzzy FMEA provides a tool that can work in a better way with vague concepts and without sufficient information than conventional FMEA. This article by using Fuzzy FMEA and based on HSE criteria evaluate hazards of Parvade No. 1 Mine in Tabas Coal Mine. The results demonstrate the most hazardous parameter is rock burst in this mine.

The objective of the US Geological Survey’s mineral deposit database project (USMIN) is to develop a comprehensive twentyfirst century geospatial database that is the authoritative source of the most important mines, mineral deposits, and mineral districts of the US. Since May 2017, the project has focused on critical minerals. Data for critical minerals that are produced as products are relatively robust, whereas data for critical minerals that may be recovered as byproducts are commonly of much poorer quality. Similarly, more is known about critical minerals that occur in conventional deposits than where those critical minerals occur in unconventional deposits. For example, rare earth elements occur principally in deposits hosted by alkaline igneous rocks, but there is potential for their production from phosphate rock mining, which is less documented. Lithium (Li) has been recovered from pegmatites and brines, but other Li-bearing deposit types have been delineated that may go into production. Cobalt may be produced as a byproduct or coproduct from a wide range ofmineral deposit types, whereas rheniumis a byproduct of copper ore. Significant opportunities for research exist that could help identify new sources of critical minerals, and may also help increase production and recovery from existing sources.

Accurate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in feasibility study and evaluation of design alternatives of mining projects. In this paper, capital and operation costs of backhoe loaders are estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), based on principle component analysis (PCA). These cost functions are consisted of five independent variables; bucket size, digging depth, dump height, weight and horse power. The MLR is conducted in two steps. At the first correlation between independent variables is omitted using PCA technique. Thereafter, MLR functions are established using selected significant PCs and total cost functions are constituted as functions of initial variables. At the end, accuracy of functions are evaluated using mean absolute error rate method.

Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a 2500 TPD gold operation employing processes including grinding, gravity, rougher flotation, leach, CIP, and E/W. An OCS(Optimizing Control System) expert control system has been implemented on rougher flotation in early 2008. The OCS system communicates with the Plant DCS(Distributed Control System) through OPC(OLE for Process Control) communication. The initial strategy was to control the flotation cell froth level set points to achieve target froth velocities. This strategy was enhanced by controlling both level and air flow setpoints. The flotation cell air and level are adjusted to reach cell pulling rates (froth velocities). The pulling rate setpoints for each cell are determined based on downstream capacity (concentrate surge tank level). The effect of pH and upstream disturbances is also taken into account in adjusting the air and level setpoints. Feed forward compensation is employed down the flotation row to minimize disturbances.

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

Many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, but it is done either informally and/or reactively. Examples of an informal approach include replacing worn equipment, such as seats, with models that have ergonomic features, or modifying tasks to eliminate safety hazards that will also reduce risk factor exposures that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/equipment after an MSD occurs. Neither one of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper will discuss how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and the interventions implemented to reduce risk factor exposures.

Tunnel construction on the Brightwater Conveyance System?s East and Central contracts required ground modifications of the existing site soils, comprised of sandy alluvium to very dense glacial till, to assist with both hand-mined and TBM tunneling operations at vertical access shafts. The ground modification program was completed with a modified double fluid jet grouting system to construct continuous overlapping soilcrete columns to depths up to 94-ft below existing grade. This paper presents the sequence and methodology for the ground modification work and capabilities of jet grouting for structural support and groundwater control in the challenging soil profile present at the Brightwater Conveyance System Project.

As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in&apos; the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. "Anglo American operates 18 Weir GEHO piston diaphragm pumps (PD) in the two pump stations of the 52-km (32-mile) long Minas Rio iron ore concentrate pipeline. The pipeline is designed to transport 26.5 Mt/a (29.2 million stpy) of concentrate from the mine to the export terminal at the coast.During the commissioning of the pipeline in the fall of 2014, high pressure pulsation levels were experienced, with peak-to-peak levels as high as 20 bar. Based on pressure readings it was concluded that hydraulic resonances were present in the system, which were excited by the third and sixth harmonic of the flow pulsation generated by the pumps.Based on this observation, Weir Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO PD slurry pumps, recommended installing a phase shift controller that controls the phase shift between the crankshafts of the individual pumps, thereby minimizing the effect of the hydraulic resonances.GEHO piston diaphragm pumps and pressure pulsation analysisPiston diaphragm pumps are used worldwide to transport abrasive and/or aggressive slurries against high discharge pressures in the mining, mineral processing and power industries. The basic operating principle of a piston diaphragm pump is shown in Fig. 1.A crankshaft is driven by an external electric motor via a gearbox. The crank mechanism transfers the rotating motion of the crankshaft into a reciprocating motion of the piston. The piston displaces a hydraulic fluid, called the propeling liquid, which displaces an elastic rubber diaphragm. When the piston moves to the right, the pressure in the pump chamber drops below the suction pressure and the nonreturn valve on the suction side will open, allowing the pumped fluid to flow into the pump chamber. When the piston moves to the left, the fluid is compressed, and when the pump chamber pressure rises above the pipeline pressure, the nonreturn valve on the discharge side will open allowing a displacement of fluid into the discharge line. The main objective of the diaphragm is to isolate the piston and the drive mechanism from the abrasive and/or aggressive fluid and create a hermetic seal between the pumped fluid and the ambient environment. Piston diaphragm pumps as shown in Fig. 1 are among the largest positive displacement pumps in the world and have been produced with stroke volumes of up to 100 L (26 gal) per pump chamber for flow rates up to 800 m3/h, discharge pressures up to 250 bar and hydraulic outputs over 2 MW per unit (van Rijswick et al., 2010)."

Asarco Incorporated’s Omaha, Nebraska refinery site and the City of Omaha’s downtown redevelopment projects are the perfect example of the marriage of the Brownfield and Sustainable Development strategies. Nebraska’s largest voluntary site remediation project created a focus point for redevelopment and has spurred over $1 billion in economic investment within a 1-mile radius of the site. Asarco was faced with options of very expensive and uncertain facility upgrades or a shutdown. Local leaders, Asarco, and regulators worked together to convert a controversial and complex site to a park-like redevelopment area with numerous long-term benefits to the City and the environment.

This study was initiated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room-and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM method) was economically sound, or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets" are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains, near outcrops and adverse geological conditions, or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included (1) analysis of the geologic, geo-technical, and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves, (2) analysis of historic changes in supply, demand, and coal prices, (3) development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and (4) development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR) as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.
