The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 µ m fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 µ m. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

"The serpentinite massifs of Hitura are located in the municipality of Nivala in Central Finland. The most important sulfide minerals in the ore are pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The ore body consists of amphibolite rocks in contact with serpentinite against mica gneiss. The mean Ni grade of the ore is about 0.7%, and the highest Ni grades have been encountered in close contact. In general, the inner parts of the ore are strongly serpentinized ultramafite and some sulfides have been converted to mackinawite and valleriite. The degree of alteration varies considerably within the ore body and, correspondingly, the grain size of the sulfides varies as well. In this study, flotation tests were done with samples from different zones of the ore body. The flotation test results on the bench scale and plant scale are discussed in terms of the mineralogical features of the ore. Ores in the North Hitura zone differ from those in the South Hitura zone.IntroductionThe Hitura nickel mine, like the entire Nivala area, is part of the Bothnian Svecokarelian schist zone, where numerous Ni-Cu boulders have been discovered since the early 1930s. The Nivala area has therefore been the subject of exploration activities by the Geological Survey of Finland (GSF) and mining companies. The first period of exploration started in 1936, and the Makola nickel deposit, located 3 km south of the Hitura mine, was discovered by GSF in 1937. About 415,000 tonnes of ore were mined at Makola between 1941 and 1954. In 1937, during the exploration and development stage of the Makola mine, boulder tracing and a geophysical survey revealed a significant ultramafic body with some lowgrade Ni-Cu occurrences in the South Hitura zone.In 1961, GSF continued the exploration program in the area and discovered the North Hitura ultramafic complex and its allied Ni-Cu occurrences. In 1964, Outokumpu Oy bought the property and, after underground exploration, comprehensive mineralogical studies, process research and a feasibility study, production started in 1970 (Isohanni et al., 1985)."

The Mount Royal Tunnel (MRT) is a 100-year-old railway tunnel located in Montreal, Canada. The tunnel is approximately 5 km long, 8.7 m wide and 5.5 m high, with a constant 0.6% grade. This existing tunnel will be used by the new Montreal light rail transit network, Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM). This requires the tunnel to be inspected, rehabilitated and made compliant to the recent safety standards. This paper presents the details of the structural inspection and rehabilitation of the tunnel along with the repair methods, addition of a center wall as well as the enlargement of the tunnel section.

Stopewall or room closure can be a problem in nining operations. In some mines, wall closure causes ore passes and nanways to collapse when they are enclosed in nine fill. When this phe- nomena occurs, heavy ground and, or, rock bursts frequently happen. Often, ground problems become progressively worse as mining in the stope block progresses toward the upper level. The sill and pillars in the level above may experi ence heavy ground and bursts. Sometimes the conditions get so bad in the stope that it is unsafe to mine the ore, so the stope is abandoned and the ore is lost.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35°C (95°F) [1]. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by >5.6°C (10°F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35°C (95°F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy. INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. "In response to a severe regional drought and in preparation for the further decline of water levels in Southern Nevada’s Lake Mead, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) built a new intake system to ensure water supply to Las Vegas and its surrounding communities. In 2015, design began on the Low Lake Level Pumping Station (L3PS) that will move the water from this lower intake, ensuring operability of the water delivery system despite these declining lake levels. The L3PS Project includes a 159-meter-deep shaft, a large underground chamber, and 34-each 152-meter-deep, 2.4-meter-diameter drilled well shafts to be constructed in highly faulted and fractured ground. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method was chosen to facilitate early contractor involvement in the design process to address the significant challenges and risks anticipated on this US$650 million Project. This paper describes the CMAR selection process; the CMAR involvement during design and benefits resulting from that involvement; and the unique collaborative effort among the owner, engineer, program manager and CMAR used to evaluate and select the best design approach, preferred underground construction methods, and coordinated geotechnical baseline report. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven of the United States’ western states rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River Basin. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished."

The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco's pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco's plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. The authors investigate the influence of the basicity index CaO / Si02 on the sintering properties of hematite ore mixtures. The experimentation was performed with three different mixtures of ores from Tazadit, Nimba, Mano-River, Itabira, Marcona, Goa, Mapawa and Cassinga. Increasing the basicity index CaO / Si02 between 0.1 and 3, chiefly through limestone admixture makes possible to reduce the thermal consumption of sintering and to improve the physical and chemical properties of the sinter. In the case of a plant using hematite ores, it seems interesting to produce an hyperbasic sinter and to complete the blast furnace burden with calibrated ore or acid pellets.

There was a time, not too long ago, when the most daunting challenges facing those in the mining and mineral processing industries could be solved through better technologies and better practices. But now the challenges that come from the actual acts of mining and processing are just part of the bigger picture. SME?s Colorado Section of the Mineral Processing Division (MPD) hosted its 63rd annual meeting at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, April 25-27 and, while the conference had its fair share or mineralolgy and processing presentations that were heavy on the technical side of things, this year?s conference was also focused on the issues of permitting, regulation compliance and legislative issues. The so-called ?softer? issues, that, if not addressed, can lead to very real and very hard challenges. Under the theme ?Mine your own business - permits, startups, expansions and resources,? even the most dedicated metallurgists were drawn into the discussions of politics and legislation, and how those issues affect their business. Fittingly, Colorado Mining Association (CMA) president Stuart Sanderson was honored with the Arthur C. Daman Lifetime Achievement Award. Sanderson, an outspoken proponent for the mining industry in Colorado and beyond, also presented the keynote address to the lunch crowd where he spoke about framing public opinion toward mining and the efforts of the CMA to move the public opinion dial in a direction more favorable to mining. Sanderson explained that Colorado, once a Republican stronghold, turned after 2002 and now is controlled by Democrats who are traditionally less supportive of the mining industry. Sanderson said the deciding factor in the power shift was money, as supporters of Democrats outspent Republicans in the most recent election cycles. CMA has done its part to keep mining going in the state with a broad marketing campaign that was outlined by Sanderson.

In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural-stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10 to 25.95 percent. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone’s physical-mechanical properties, such as uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity were determined to be more than 70 percent. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81 percent risk of hand-arm vibration. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural-stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force. Pv, horizontal force, Ph, and longitudinal force, P1. A method for estimation of these forces is proposed, which relates their value to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on shifter behaviour is analysed and guidelines are developed for selection of a suitable shifter. Also discussed are the requirements of the shifting operation for other equipment.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

Sedimentary dolomitic phosphate ores are difficult to treat by flotation, and high-grade phosphate concentrates with high recoveries are difficult to obtain. The literature indicates that the reagents required for beneficiation of such ores are generally dictated by the nature of the gangue. In this paper, the optimum flotation parameters necessary for enhancing the grade and recovery of a typical low-grade dolomitic rock phosphate ore from Jhamarkotra, Rajasthan, are highlighted. The standard design-of-experiment (DOE) technique was used to obtain empirical models for both grade and recovery. The model equations were then used for optimizing the flotation parameters, including pH, percent solids, collector dosage and depressant dosage. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that a phosphate concentrate containing about 36% P205, with a recovery greater than 95%, can be obtained in a single-stage by the reverse flotation of carbonaceous minerals at the optimized conditions. An upsurge of interest in slurry pipelines to move coal from Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado to markets in the southwest, west, midwest and northwest has recently developed. Specific pipelines have been proposed to serve these markets; the routes of these lines are depicted in Exhibit I. It is, therefore, timely to discuss some technical aspects of the terminal facilities for these western coal pipelines. The discussion will be based on experience with the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines as well as detailed planning and testing for a proposed 1,000-mile system from Wyoming to the middle south area. The economics of the pipeline terminal processes are heavily depend¬ent on site, type of process used, and other specifics of the situation. In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.

"Usage of Supercritical CO2 in place of high pressure freshwater has proven to be a potential breakthrough in the technique of fracturing. Tapping of carbon footprints from feasible sources like industries can be used to manufacture Supercritical CO2 required for fracking. Supercritical CO2, being less viscous than water, creates complex and coherent micro-fractures which can connect many more natural fractures greatly, increasing maximally the fractures’ conductivity leading to an increment in production. The better clean-up property of Supercritical CO2 provides auxiliary benefits of immediate evaluation of fracture zones, usage of an optimized quantity of mesh proppant and elimination of the need of swabbing. Also, Coal has a stronger affinity for CO2 than for CH4. When CO2 is present, CH4 on coal is replaced by CO2. This also ensures rigorous recovery of gas from the coal beds. Use of Supercritical CO2 will obliterate many problems as the CO2 used for fracturing is either sequestered beneath the crust or is recovered at the surface and reused. Therefore, injecting CO2 into coalbeds achieves not only enhanced CBM recovery, but also greenhouse sequestration underground. INTRODUCTION Coalbed Methane At various times in the geologic past, earth had dense forests in low-lying wetland areas. Due to natural processes such as flooding, these forests were buried underneath the soil. As more and more soil deposited over them, these dead plant remains were compressed. As the process continued the plant matter was protected from biodegradation and oxidation, usually by mud or acidic water. Under high pressure and high temperature, dead vegetation was slowly converted to coal. The omnibus process of formation of coal, thus, comprises of conversion of dead plant matter into peat, followed by its conversion to lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, after that bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This process of enrichment of coal as it is progressively forced deeper into an ambience with higher temperature and pressure involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period and is called coalification. During coalification, large amounts of methane-rich gas are generated and stored within the coal on internal surfaces; hence comes coalbed methane. Coalbed methane (CBM), a gas formed as part of the geological processes that are responsible for the generation of coal, is adsorbed into the solid matrix of the coal during its formation process. Coalbed methane is distinct from a typical sandstone or other conventional gas reservoirs, as the methane is adsorbed and not absorbed. The methane is in a near-liquid state, lining the inside of pores within the coal. The open fractures in the coal that result from the liberation of volatile materials (and subsequent contraction due to the liberation) from the coal due to the high temperature and pressure conditions encountered, called cleats, may also contain free gas or can be saturated with water."
