In central Utah, a coal mining operation is taking place under an 0.5-m (20-in.) pressurized natural gas pipeline. The room-and-pillar method with pillar extraction is being used to extract the coal from the seams. The pillars beneath the pipeline will not be extracted; however, there is a possibility that some subsidence may occur due to pillar failure. To assess possible damages on the pipeline, an attempt has been made to predict subsidence in the area where pillars may collapse. The resultant values of subsidence strain and slope have been used to determine the magnitude of strain, stress, and shear induced in the pipeline. Also, a network of survey points has been installed along the pipeline to detect ground move¬ment that would indicate excessive subsidence.

Land reclamation and rehabilitation of depleted coal mines in the wider area of Ptolemais-Amynteon is practiced by the Division of Mines of the Public Power Corporation of Greece in order to conform to the concept of environmentally sustainable economic development of its operations. Detailed chemical and mineralogical studies were performed on reclaimed soils and their crops in order to evaluate the results of land reclamation and rehabilitation while similar studies were undertaken in adjacent, regularly cultivated, soils. Results indicate that trace element concentrations as well as concentrations of elements of environmental concern to be higher in regularly cultivated soils than the reclaimed ones. However, the concentration of the elements in wheat grains harvested from both, regular and reclaimed, group of soils is the same. The reason for this behavior is the very low water solubility, of the elements in the soils, due to their high pH values and the nature of their occurrence. As a result, wheat crops produced from reclaimed-rehabilitated soils developed on depleted lignite mines in the wider area of Ptolemais-Amynteon do not pose any health problem on either humans or animals when consumed.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

Introduction The disposal of spent ore from cyanide heap-leach processing facilities is of concern to the mining industry, the regulatory agencies and the general public. The disposal of an additional several hundred million tons of spent ore from heap-leaching operations is planned in the western United States during the next decade, and this amount could increase if gold prices rise. In the past decade, more than fifteen million tons of spent ore have been disposed of in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The criterion for offloading spent ore was set by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources at 0.5 ppm weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide. South Dakota's nitrate offloading limits vary for each mine, depending on ore type and other factors. Concentrations of nitrate in the leachate from spent ore depositories could be the result of conversion from other nitrogen-containing species. One likely source of nitrate is residual explosives from the blasting of ore. Previous work on the combustion products of nitrogen explosives has shown incomplete oxidation (Johansson and Persson, 1970). Another likely nitrate source is the degradation of cyanide to ammonia, followed by oxidation to nitrite and nitrate. A third possibility may be leaching of background nitrate from soil or rock. Objective The primary objective of this research was to investigate laboratory procedures for predicting nitrate concentrations in effluent after the disposal of spent ore at heap-leach gold processing operations. Laboratory tests were performed to define the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite in leachate as a function of time. Sources and species conversions were examined by investigating the nitrogen contributions from cyanide neutralization and from blasting with ammonium nitrate/fuel-oil (ANFO) explosives. Ore processing at cyanide heap-leach facilities Gold mines in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota normally use the following steps in their heap-leach cyanidation processing: Blasting. Surface gold mines in the Black Hills use ANFO explosives (approximately 95% ammonium nitrate and 5% fuel oil). Field evidence and studies show that explosives often fail to ignite or burn completely in shot holes. One reason is that ammonium nitrate absorbs moisture readily, which reduces blast efficiency. Ferguson and Leask (1988) cited a study conducted at the Fording coal mine in southeastern British Columbia. In that study, the total nitrogen released to surface and ground water was estimated to be about 6% of the slurry explosives. However, Ferguson and Leask (1988), in a later analysis of water quality near coal mines in the Kootenay coal fields, indicated that this is likely an overestimate of the nitrogen release. Mines that used ANFO explosives in dry conditions released 0.2% of the nitrogen from blasting. Cyanidation. At surface gold mines in the northern Black Hills, cyanide species from heap leaching can be classified into free cyanides and simple ions, weak complexes, moderately strong complexes and strong complexes (Scott and Ingles, 1981). Degradation of cyanide and disposal of spent ore. Methods of destroying cyanides include hydrogen peroxide oxidation, natural degradation and evaporation, water leaching and alkaline chlorination. Hydrogen peroxide is used to oxidize cyanides in the northern Black Hills mining area. The hydrogen peroxide oxidation reaction forms cyanate, which can hydrolyze to form ammonium and carbonate ions. After formation of ammonia or ammonium ion, further oxidation to nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) can occur. Spent tailings from gold processing in the Black Hills normally are disposed of in tailings facilities constructed in nearby drainages. Infiltrating rainwater with a typical pH of about 5.6 is an additional component introduced into the spent ore after disposal. Methods Field sample collection. Spent ore samples were collected from conveyor belts (or other convenient points) at heap-leach mines by personnel from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The samples were placed in black plastic bags that were contained within 5-gal buckets and sealed to prevent exposure to ultraviolet light. The future phosphate rock deposits in South Florida contain a significant fraction of dolomite. The high MgO content of the rock is undesirable in the production of phosphoric acid. Several flotation schemes have been attempted to separate dolomite from phosphate rock. Alternately, Selective Flocculation process has been suggested to separate dolomite from apatite. A high MgO content rock was simulated by a 30:10:60 synthetic mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the mixed mineral systems apatite-silica and dolomite-silica with Polyacrylic acid (PM) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants respectively but not realized in apatite-dolomite system with PEO flocculant. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for loss in selectivity, was minimized by addition of a Site Blocking Agent (lower molecular weight fraction of PEO). Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage, and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed mineral tests was translated into the ternary mixed mineral system, viz. apatite-dolomite-silica. In this presentation surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior will be discussed.

Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required placement of approximately 3,000,000m3 of fill over a P1an area of approximately 600,000m in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40m. Earthwork construction was completed in approximately six months using mine waste which was placed in 4 to 6m lifts using mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10m to enable development of a mat and additional resistance to possible differential settlements under dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 80 mil (2mm) HOPE liner was used below the leach pads and this was protected from the loading and unloading equipment using an engineered liner system consisting of screened sand, gravel and silt from local sources as the bedding and cover layers, and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low grade ore. Settlement monitoring, field testing and subsequent assessments of liner performance have indicated an adequate design was achieved and the project proceeded with considerable savings in time and construction costs.

Surveying of mines is a necessary step in coal mining to assemble maps which are used for tracking progress in the development of the mine and to plan future coal removal. A first approach for automatically building high-resolution two-dimensioml maps of underground coal mines is presented. The technique assembles laser rangefinder scans obtained from several locations within the mine into a consistent global map of the mine. Each range scan comprises thousands of data points collected in one second, thereby achieving higher resolution and much faster measurement compared to a human using a transit. The raw data (range scans) are processed to fuse them into a consistent representation. This paper describes a first approach to automated surveying and presents initial results of merging range scans. Improvements to the scan-merging algorithm are proposed.

It was just a little over three years ago that the "Go" button was pushed to start operations on the blending piles at Oro Grande. As is usual with any new installation, there were problems that had to be solved. This paper will concern itself with those problems directly related to quality control. To obtain a consistent outgoing quality level at the most economical level for a finished product requires two main points: 1. Measurement of variations in the process, 2. A method of making a predictable change to adjust for variations. The manufacture of cement requires a relatively high degree of accuracy if a consistent outgoing quality level is to be maintained. The blending piles were our solution to this problem.

Fumes produced during blasting operations in underground mines are defined in this paper by an equivalent contaminant source. The primary goal is to establish a method which would allow all those parameters not measured directly to be determined reliably from field data. The parameters to be identified are the diffusion coefficient , and the position and size of an equivalent source. The diffusion-value is computed from the peak concentrations taken by two monitors located in the drift. The first monitor is placed close to where blasting pollutants join the main stream, while a second monitors is moved downstream a some distance from the first point. The position and size of the dust source and the total amount of dust produced during blasting are determined from the data recorded by only one monitor.

The Indian Mining sector is subjected to a number of trends including call for global transition towards the route to sustainable development. Several regulations were enacted by the Government departments, from time to time, in order to identify the problems faced by the mining industry, including small-scale mining operations and to suggest appropriate mitigation measures in the form of environmental standards and certifications. During this process, a pursuit of sustainable development is regarded as an important area responding to socio-economic conditions, priorities and thus guides eventually corporate policies and practices. Thus, there is a need to formulate strategies for sustainable development. Based on these strategies some environmental indicators were developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. A case study pertaining to a group of iron ore mines in North Goa and Chromite mines in Sukinda, Orissa was selected for this study. Base line environmental data has been generated in the respective study sites. A core set of environmental indicators monitoring environmental progress based on the P-S-R model pioneered by OECD is linked with indicators for assessing the integration of environmental concerns.

Automated monitoring of steep embankments allows the early detection of instability and can be used to avoid or mitigate possible slope failures. A system that uses multiple and different types of sensors has been created and successfully tested at the Highland Valley Copper mine in British Columbia. The system uses robotic total stations (RTSs) as the primary measurement sensor, with surveys repeated at predefined intervals selected to optimize operational efficiency. A methodology has been developed to improve the system’s accuracy and reliability by reducing the effects of systematic errors created by atmospheric refraction and unstable instrument and reference point positions. The inclusion of GPS sensors to monitor the RTS positions creates additional operational flexibility and maintains system integrity when insufficient reference stations are available.

Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of chemical additives and metal ions present either added or present as contaminants, on the flotation. Fuerstenau and Palmer (1976) have studied in detail the adsorption of multivalent cations onto oxide and silicate minerals. It was observed that the adsorption of a multivalent metal species exhibits a sharp pH dependence which is related to the formation of hydroxy complexes of the metal ions in solution. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions.

SUNNARY AND CONCLUSIONS Argentina presents to the foreign and local investors a mineral wealth that is largely unexplored, untested, underdeveloped and therefore incompletely evaluated. In view of the above, the new administration of President Raul Alfonsin through its Department of nines has designed and implemented a strategy ( Plan de Expansión Ninera P.E.M.), whose main objective aims at improving the "investment climate" in the sector. It is the Government's basic intention to apply the Mining Promotion Law with responsibility but with generosity to encourage the attraction of investment (local and foreign) to the sector. The establishment of a Data Bank system to evaluate possible new potential ore mining developments will help to connect the owners of potential projects with investors outside the sector. Argentina has an interesting gold ore potential. Estimated reserves of individual projects already known amount to almost 300 tonnes of gold for potential production. The government strongly believes and present information indicates that more systematic exploration has to be undertaken in the Jurassic areas that almost cover the whole of Patagonia. Two recent gold discoveries (Angela in the Chubut province, and Cerro Vanguardia in Santa Cruz province) indicate the potential of this area.

Rutile ore is an important resource for the production of titanium products, and flotation is an efficient method to enrich rutile from its deposits. Motivated by strong commercial demand for titanium metal and alloys, substantial efforts have been made to improve the flotation efficiency of rutile. Styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) and salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA) are commonly used as collectors for rutile flotation, and lead (Pb) ions can be used as activators for rutile flotation with SPA or SHA. Xanthates have a price advantage over SPA and SHA for the flotation of sulfides as SPA and SHA prices are higher than xanthate prices. In this work, we found that when rutile is activated by lead ions, amyl xanthate is an efficient collector for rutile flotation at pH 8. A slightly basic slurry can be readily obtained. Moreover, the price of amyl xanthate is lower than that of SPA or SHA. In this regard, this flotation strategy has the potential to be used in industry. Furthermore, the adsorption features of amyl xanthate on the Pb-activated rutile surface was investigated by experimental methods, which provides insight into the role of lead ions in rutile flotation.

Historical methods of designing steel cord belt splices are compared with modern finite element modeling (FEM) methods. Dependence of the belt strength rating on the splice dynamic fatigue strengths is reviewed. A number of splice schematics are examined, using simple spring theory and FEM methods. Steel cord wire rope design is discussed. The importance of the insulation gum rubber properties and their splice dimensional factors and tolerances are analyzed. Splice fatigue lie analysis procedure is reviewed. This may be used to predict splice life or time of failure, depending on how the conveyor belt is operated.

A high effective method using a hammer mill, a column pneumatic separator and an electrostatic separator was studied for recycling copper from waste printed circuit board. The factors influencing the copper liberation degree and following separations were discussed. Two different physical separating methods were compared and discussed. Experiment results show that a well-controlled impact action can produce a satisfactory degree of copper liberation at a relatively coarse particle size. Around 90% copper recovery from printed circuit board for coarse particle size can be achieved by using a combination of electrostatic separation and pneumatic separation.

In 1852, six barrels of iron ore were loaded aboard the steamer Baltimore at Marquette, MI, after a trip by mule wagon from the nearby Cleveland Iron Mining Co. Shipped to Sault Ste. Marie, they were portaged around rapids and reloaded onto another ship for the final journey to the steel mills of Cleveland. In 1855, the same company-the predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.-chartered the brigantine Columbia to carry the first iron-ore cargo through the newly opened Soo locks. In 1981, about 2,190 iron-ore shipments in the form of taconite pellets were transported by water from US Great Lakes-ports. The total volume during the 284-day shipping season was 63 Mt (62 million It). Counting Canadian ship¬ments, almost 76 Mt (75 million It) of iron ore were moved on the lakes last year. The five Great Lakes-Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario-contain 20% of the world's fresh water. The area surrounding the lakes has 26% of the nation's populations, 47% of its steel production, and over 80% of the raw materials required to make steel. That figure includes 71% of the country's iron ore and 40% of its limestone. Only the availability of low-cost water transportation of raw materials has kept the heartland steel producers competitive. Iron ore shipped on the lakes originates in the Lake Superior district's Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges. Major mines and their principal partners are Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Empire, Republic, and Tilden; Armco and Republic's Reserve Mining Co.; Oglebay Norton Co.'s Eveleth; Hanna Mining Co.'s National and Butler; Inland Steel Co.'s Minorca; Pickands Mather & Co.'s Erie and Hibbing, the latter operated in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corp.; and US Steel Corp.'s Minntac. Pelletized ore products at these facilities is shipped through seven principal ports on the upper lakes: Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Taconite Harbor, MN; Superior, WI, and Marquette, MI, on Lake Superior; and Escanaba, MI, on Lake Michigan. In 1981, tonnage volumes ranged from 13.3 Mt (13.1 million It) shipped from Duluth, to Marquette's total of 5.4 Mt (5.3 million It). The ore docks, with two exceptions, are operated by railroads, most of which are owned by mining companies. Table 1 illustrates US iron-ore shipments in 1981. In the lower lakes, ore is discharged at dock facilities close to the great steel-producing centers of Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. Between the mines and mills, lakes and connecting waterways form one of the country's most effective transportation systems. Each year, vessels on the Great Lakes transport about 181 Mt (200 million st) of bulk industrial and agricultural materials-a greater quantity at a lower cost than can be achieved by any other transportation mode. An alternative flowsheet was designed for the flotation treatment of a complex sulfide ore from the Sotiel Mine in Spain. The ore contains 0.71% Cu, 2.24% Pb and 5.63% Zn. Two specially developed synthetic collectors, methyl-mercapto-benzoxazole (MMBO) and 6n-propoxy-mercapto-benzo-thiazole (PMBT), were examined. MMBO exerts a specific action on copper and zinc minerals after treatment with copper sulfate, and PMBT exerts a specific action on Pb minerals. Flotation operating variables (pH, frother type, frother quantity and feed particle size) were examined by means of rougher flotation tests to determine the optimum conditions for the new collectors. Once the optimum conditions were determined, a series of open flotation circuits were run on feeds of various particle sizes (obtained by different types of grinding). The objective was to obtain high-grade Cu and Zn concentrates. The results of the open-circuit tests demonstrated that a Cu concentrate grading from 18% to 23% Cu and a Zn concentrate grading from 40% to 48% Zn can be produced.
