Non-metallic inclusions in liquid steel are mainly formed during killing. As far as these particles are not captured by the slag, they are found in the cast steel where they can deteriorate the mechanical properties. Inclusions may also disrupt the continuous casting process, affecting thus directly the quality of the steel and the production capacity. Steel pin samples from the Sidmar plant (Belgium) were taken in different steps of several ladle treatments and in the tundish. Also slab samples were studied. All samples concern the same type of low alloyed aluminium killed steel. The non-metallic inclusions were isolated from the steel matrix and investigated with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. The evolution of the non-metallic inclusions is described by their number, size, shape and elemental composition. The main non-metallic inclusions present are aluminium oxides and spinel type compounds.

The paper describes the design and operation of pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers. The advantages, which the columns offer, include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation, containment of noxious vapors and reduced crud formation. In addition to the description of operation, the paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also delineates potential advantages of the pulsed column in copper solvent extraction.

In this study, Raman spectroscopy was utilized to investigate the evolution of char structure in pulverized coal (PC) during microwave irradiation. The results indicated that though microwave treatment was carried out at low powers of 132W or 264W, significant variation in char structure was still observed. Char structure turned out to be more irregular firstly under microwave irradiation. However, char structure of superior regularity was obtained with the extension of irradiation time. It can be conclude that short time microwave treatment may facilitate the chemical activity of coal, while long time microwave irradiation on PC may deteriorate its combustion or pyrolysis property.

Present work is a part of developing novel recycling technique for waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) i.e. the liberation of metals from PCBs by organic swelling followed by the treatment of resin to remove/ recover hazardous soldering materials. In order to recover the hazardous metallic constituent lead from the liberated resin, initially the leaching studies were made using fresh solder containing 63.9% Pb and remaining tin. Experimental results obtained in different conditions viz. time, temperature and acidity showed -97.20% of lead dissolution with 6M HNO3 at solid to liquid (S:L) ratio 1:10 (g/mL) and temperature 90°C in 75 minutes. The result of the studies validated with crushed PCBs shows that almost total lead and tin was leached out with 6M HNO3 and 6M HC1 respectively at S:L ratio 1:10 (g/mL) and temperature 90°C within 50 minutes. The results will be useful for the treatment and safe disposal of PCBs resin.

The technological applications of MgH2 hydrides for hydrogen storage demand the overcoming of some critical issues: an improvement of the reaction kinetics and a reduction of the desorption temperature. The synthesis of nanocrystalline MgH2 by reactive milling and inert gas condensation and a proper metal catalyst addition, constitute recently employed strategies. In the investigation of the hydrogen short and long-range dynamics, sorption kinetics and nanostructure stability, the mechanical spectroscopy offers some specific advantages. In the present research this technique was employed with other experimental approaches (XRD DSC) to investigate relaxational and structural damping processes in nanocrystalline MgH2 with added catalysts (Fe). Time/temperature variation of the dynamic elasticity moduli and mechanical quality factor are correlated to hydrogen anelastic relaxation processes and concomitant structural transformation of MgH2 to Mg associated to long range H diffusion. Results are discussed with reference to microstructural modification strategies able to assist hydrogen release.

A history of the research regarding the spinel in the community of the stainless steels has simply been reviewed, followed by the recent studies for the formation mechanism of the spinel in the ferritic stainless steel melts equilibrated with the highly basic slags and the crystallization behavior of spinel phase in the calcium aluminosilicate melts containing MgO and CaF2 during slow cooling cycles. It has been proposed that the content of aluminum and calcium in the steel melts as well as the basicity and the content of MgO and Al2O3 in the slags are quite important factors affecting the spinel formation in view of the formation mechanism based on the reduction of MgO (or CaO) and Al2O3 in the slags by the aluminum and silicon added to deoxidize the molten steel. The use of magnesia refractory was also recommended. The formation mechanism of spinel from the MgO inclusions readily formed in the steel melts equilibrated with the highly basic slags has newly been proposed on the basis of the ionic exchange reactions at the inclusion/metal interface and the crystal chemistry of oxides. The crystallization behavior of the spinel phase in the calcium aluminosilicate melts was enhanced by the Al2O3 based on the ionic reaction of spinel formation in the oxide melts, while the size of the spinel crystals in the oxide melts decreased by addition of CaF2.

Britannia Refined Metals Ltd. was built in 1931 to refine the lead bullion produced at the Mt. Isa mine in Queensland, Australia. Several periods of expansion and development have taken place over the intervening years, leading to major increases in the refining capacity for both lead and silver. A plant for treating recycled lead-acid batteries was added in 1976. This was redeveloped in the early 1990's to utilise Isasmelt technology for the smelting operations. Most recently the No. 2 refinery kettle floor was extended to enable it to process lead bullion produced from two Imperial Smelting Furnaces (ISF), at Britannia Zinc Ltd. in Avonmouth, England and at MIM Hüttenwerke in Duisburg, Germany. This expansion included the provision of a plant for the hygienic handling of drosses and skims. This paper briefly describes the present primary refining operations and gives an update on the most recent developments in the process metallurgy and operating practices that have taken place.

The precipitation kinetics of NbC in ferrite matrix of the Nb microalloyed steel was investigated experimentally and numerically. The mole fractions of NbC precipitates formed at different isothermal temperatures were measured as a function of holding time by electrical resistivity test and were compared with both a mathematical model based on time-dependent nucleation and growth rates and the hardness. There is a good match among the calculated and measured precipitation kinetics of NbC and the hardness. In the past, many lead-containing slags and wastes were stored in piles or landfills. However, shortages of landfill space as well as increased public, concern about the toxic nature of disposing lead containing industrial wastes in landfills have led to review of disposal methods. Several lead wastes are processed to provide commercial products. They are used on-site in land reclamation projects. or are processed and sold as a by-product. These by-products contain nutrient elements needed for plants or animals and also may contain heavy? metal contaminants such as As, Cr. Cu, Zn and Ph. Use of such by-products containing unacceptable levels of these contaminants could cause plant and animal toxicity. In this paper. role of viscosity in conversion of lead slag wastes into commercial products containing ,low content of lead and other, heavy metals is presented. Effects of slag viscosity on the velocity of movement of metal' and matte prills through themolten slag layer in the melting furnace is discussed. Current and emerging slag cleaning technology, foamed, granulated and pelletized slag technologies are reviewed.

"Navarro is the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it collects about 1.600 tons of waste daily. The environment surrounding Navarro is highly contaminated and the pollutants released by the dump threaten human health in the adjoining neighborhoods. The goal of our project is to identify major pollutants released from the dump and their distribution in the surrounding ecosystem. In a first phase of the sampling and analysis program landfill leachate was collected and screened for heavy metals and for the most common persistent organic pollutants. This allowed us to identify the most relevant compounds on which we focused in a more detailed second phase investigation. These compounds were quantified in the vicinity of the landfill (groundwater, surface water, drinking water and soil) to get information on their mobility and possible pathways into the human body.IntroductionThe usual technique of waste disposal in most developing countries is by landfilling on not -, or not well controlled sites, where people live close by or even on the waste itself. A typical example for this practice is Navarro, the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it now consists of about 23 million tons of household and industrial waste. The dump is located on a wetland in the riverbed of the Cauca River, the main drinking water source for Cali. Two ponds of unknown permeability located next to the landfill collect a fraction of the waste leachate. During the rainy season, the ponds frequently overflow and drain into the soil (alluvial, loamy sediments) of surrounding sugar cane fields. The environment of Navarro is assumed to be highly polluted and there is evidence that it affects the health of nearby inhabitants. Specifically, the incidence of respiratory diseases was higher among vulnerable individuals (<3 and >50 years old) living in a <3 km perimeter of Navarro as compared with a control group (Solano et al., 2006). Further, a clustering of extremely rare congenital malformations (sirenomelias and cyclops) was observed in a small area during a short time period (<6 months) (Filigrana et al., 2008)."

The zinc, lead and alumina contents in copper smelting slag are increasing with the increase in waste recycling. The recovery of base metals such as lead and zinc from copper converter slag is important from both an economical and environmental perspective. As a fundamental study of the metal recovery by reduction process, activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag under iron saturation at 1573K are derived from the data of slag-metal equilibrium experiments. On the basis of the obtained data, the activity coefficients of ZnO and PbO in the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-5mass%AlO1.5 slag were compared with those of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx ternary system. Addition of alumina increases activities coefficient of ZnO and PbO in SiO2 rich side of the slag, and decreases them in CaO rich side.

Technology for treating man-made metal-containing raw materials in DC electric furnaces with polarization of the bottom phase (PDF furnaces) has been developed and proven on a semi-commercial scale. PDF furnaces permit processing of man-made raw materials, i.e. current and accumulated intermediate products with rather high contents of valuable metals (i.e. slags, sludge, residues, Waelz slag, etc.), as well as secondary raw materials and virtually any type of waste using an environmentally safe technique based on sublimation of volatile metals and transfer of non-volatile metals and sulfur into the bottom phase in the furnace. Processes developed on the basis of the use of PDF furnaces make it possible to take advantage on a full commercial scale of electrolysis of molten materials, including electrochemical reduction of metals, intensification of their settling into the bottom phase and sublimation of volatile components, as well as to significantly improve recoveries of nonferrous metals, resolve the problem of excessive accretion formation in slagging processes and substantially improve the environmental situation. The low-grade discard slag obtained can be utilized in the construction industry; in particular, slag can be added to the limestone feed for cement manufacture.

"The effects of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate and particle size on the dissolution rate of synthetically prepared calcium molybdate were investigated. Dissolution of calcium molybdate in oxalic acid solutions takes place as a series - parallel type reaction. In the first reaction step, which proceeds according to the ""Langmuir - Hinshelwood Mechanism"", calcium aqua oxalato molybdate is formed as a complex chelate intermediate product. In the second reaction step, molybdic acid is formed during the slow hydrolysis of calcium aqua oxalato molybdate, and it reacts rapidly with oxalic acid to form the polymeric hydrogen oxalate dimolybdate chelate as an end product. Activation energies were calculated as 41.4 and 49.9 kJ mol-1 for the first and zero order reactions. The fractional conversion versus time relationship can be given by the following equation.IntroductionMolybdenum is used widely in electric-electronic, metal working, aerospace and aeronautic, nuclear, glass and petrochemical industries because of its high melting temperature and resistance against chemical effects. However, the largest molybdenum consumers are the iron-steel and super alloy industries where molybdenum is used as an alloying element. Industrially important molybdenum minerals are limited to molybdenite (M0S2), powellite (CaMo04) and wulfenite (PbMo04), which are considered as primary molybdenum resources. Secondary molybdenum resources are spent catalysts and scrap [1-4].Molybdenum has been produced by pyrometallurgical processes in the past. Since it is possible to process low grade molybdenum ores and industrial wastes by hydrometallurgical processes, which are more environmentally friendly than pyrometallurgical processes, the importance of the use of hydrometallurgical processes has increased in the molybdenum production industry."

A cold model study on the effects of various operating conditions on the dispersed-phase holdup in a liquid-liquid emulsion generated by bottom gas injection has been performed using water and kerosene. Dimensional analysis was used to correlate the holdup with the operating conditions and the sampling locations. The holdup increased with gas velocity, and decreased with axial and radial distances. The radial distribution of holdup follows a Gaussian function. The holdup increased with increasing ratio of the heavy phase to light phase volumes and decreased with the total height of the heavy phase. The combined effects of various operating conditions can be represented by the Froude number. The variation of the holdup within the plume was correlated by a single equation involving a set of dimensionless numbers.

The Tyrone copper solution extraction and electrowinning plant was the first such facility built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1984. Over the next 20 years, the aqueous flow rate capacity of the plant has been expanded from the original design of 12,000 gallons per minute (gpm) to 34,000 gpm to meet production goals in the face of declining copper grades in the leach solutions. The ability to process higher aqueous flow rates through existing equipment comes at the expense of increased organic loss through entrainment to raffinate. These losses of organic (diluent and extraction reagents) can account for up to 10 percent of the plant?s total operating costs. With the recent dramatic price increase of petroleum-based products, these operating costs due to losses are sure to increase. This paper will discuss recent improvements at the Tyrone SXEW plant that have resulted in a 40 percent reduction of organic losses. These improvements include picket fence modifications, new fence materials, organic recovery systems, and operational practices within the solution extraction process.

For the development of low-cost silicon refining process for solar cells, the present authors have been studying the low temperature refining technique, ?solidification refining of Si with Si-Al melts at 1173 ? 1273K?. In the present work, we have investigated the B removal in that refining, utilizing the segregation effect and also the effect of Ti addition to the melt. Segregation ratio of B between solid Si and Si-Al melt was measured by the temperature gradient zone melting technique and it indicated the B removal fraction would be as much as 90%. Titanium addition to the melt was found to produce the TiB2 precipitation with soluble B in that melt and bring the effective B removal of refined Si to its content of 1ppma.

The extraction of cerium(IV) by valence change with two-phase electrolysis was studied experimentally. The results show that the electro-oxidation extraction depends mainly on the distribution of the solute between the two phases, the reaction on the electrode surface and the diffusion of the reactant and product between the electrode and aqueous interphases. The effects of various parameters on cerium extraction were also studied. The selected parameters were background current, catholyte acidity, agitation speed, operation current and voltage and surfactant addition. The electro-oxidation extraction mechanism can be divided into eight steps. In addition, Wee the rate of extraction is quite fast, the percentage extraction Ce+4 can be taken as an index to show the conversion rate of Ce+3 J to Ce+4.

Vibrational spectra of surface and solution compounds formed during cyclic voltammetry of a gold electrode in a deoxygenated 0.01 mol dm-3 NaCN solution have been examined using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The presence of cyanide at the electrode surface was indicated by Raman bands characteristic of the carbon-nitrogen stretch, CN.. Chemisorption of cyanide on the gold surface was evidenced by the presence of vibrational modes due to gold-carbon stretching, AuC, and gold-carbon-nitrogen bending, AuCN. Prior to the disappearance of the surface cyanide stretch band, a limiting value of the CN was obtained, the same as the value reported for adsorbed cyanide. Effects upon the voltammetry and vibrational modes of surface species due to additions of silver and lead to the gold-cyanide system have been observed.

This paper aims at presenting numerical results showing the impact of different parameters on the limitation of entrained slag from ladle to tundish during the ladle drainage. These parameters are process parameters, slag properties or external actuator acting directly on ladle slag behaviour. Numerical simulations based on the use of the CFD Fluent software illustrate the vortexing and non-vortexing phenomena appearing during the ladle drainage. This numerical tool validated by experimental data acquired on water model has been applied to industrial configurations. It shows that the slag properties (viscosity, surface tension?) or some modifications of parameters (slide gate opening, geometry of the ladle bottom?) have a positive effect on the slag entrainment and also on the decrease of the ladle heel. Finally, the modelling of the behaviour of an external actuator injecting some gas in the region of the nozzle reveals interesting possibility for reducing slag entrainment from ladle to tundish during the final steps of the drainage.
