This paper shows the usefulness of geostatistical conditional simulation combined with the quantification of sampling errors obtained from the analyses of fundamental errors ? validated from duplicate data ? to assess the relevance of the quality and quantity of the information, for short-term mine planning purposes. Traditional blast-hole drilling equipment has been designed for efficient drilling, but not for obtaining high-quality samples. Furthermore, blast-hole sampling interferes with production, and thus usually produces poor-quality results. These results are the basis of short-term plans, where the grades of selective mining units are estimated and used for distinguishing between ore and waste. Under these conditions, misclassification (ore blocks sent to the waste dump and waste blocks processed at the plant) is inevitable, leading to significant hidden losses that can amount to millions of dollars per annum. Reverse circulation drilling with the latest automated sampling technology improves significantly the quality of the information used for short-term planning, and thus reduces misclassification, improving the financial returns of the operation. In this paper, we present the general methodology for assessing the effect of poor blast-hole sampling, as compared to advanced reverse circulation drilling grids at several spacings, in order to arrive at the most appropriate grid for short-term planning. This plan can be prepared well in advance using several additional variables that are usually not available when the plan is based on blast-hole samples. Furthermore, blending options can be analysed in order to optimize plant recovery, minimize the use of sulphuric acid, etc. Three case studies are presented, namely a typical porphyry copper deposit, an exotic oxide copper deposit, and a complex gold deposit, where mineralization is controlled by structures and lithology. This paper shows that in all cases, advanced reverse circulation drilling grids provide good-quality information that, coupled with the use of geostatistics for short-term mine planning, significantly improve the financial returns of the operation.

Adsorption/thermal desorption with sorbent cartridges and analytical method using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the determination of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) emitted from primary aluminum smelters. A customized cartridge was built like a packed column with a stainless steel tube filled with a specific resin. The optimization of adsorption and desorption parameters was carried out to support the PFC sampling for all aluminum production technologies. The proposed method showed good linearity for concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ppbv for CF4 and from 5 to 500 ppbv for C2F6 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. In certain conditions, the detection limits of the analytical method reached 0.3 ppbv for CF4 and 0.15 ppbv for C2F6- Using this methodology, a field campaign was carried out using a sequential sampler allowing the simultaneous sampling of PFC with cartridges and sampling bags. The results showed no significant difference (t-test) between the two sampling technologies and no breakthrough was observed from the cartridges .

In many practical combustion systems ignition may occur through contact with hot burned gases . Such a process plays a vital role in flame stabilization on bluff bodies . It is also of importance in the ignition of firedamp by the hot spent gases of explosives used in mines . Also , in the communication of flames through narrow channels , a problem of practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment , the propagation of the flame is essentially a reignition process in which hot burned gases are the agent of ignition . In the actual ignition problem a great variety of conditions may be visualized . Ignition may occur where pockets of hot gases are surrounded by cold explosive mixtures or where pockets of cold mixture may be surrounded by hot gases . Alternately , a flowing stream of combustible mixture may be initially in contact with another stream of hot combustion products , or a jet of hot gases may flow into a cold quiescent mixture ; the jet may be laminar or turbulent , continuous or discontinuous . The hot gas may also consist of the oxidant ( air for instance ) and the cold combustible pure fuel . This study by the Bureau of Mines is concerned only with ignition produced by a continuous jet of gas ( hot ) flowing into a practically quiescent cold mix- The investigation of ignition by bursts of hot gases or by turbulent jets is outside the scope of this report , and work performed on this phase of the problem has been published elsewhere

There are several methods available to estimate deflection and ultimate Capacity of laterally loaded piles. In this investigation an attempt has been made to verify the existing methods for prediction of ultimate lateral resistance and deflection with the laboratory and field test results reported in the literature. A 75 pile loading test data obtained from the literature was used to evaluate two methods designed to predict the ultimate lateral resistance of rigid piles and three methods designed to predict the lateral deflections of rigid piles and four methods designed to predict the lateral deflection of flexible piles subjected to lateral loads. The accuracy and precision of each method is quantified statistically. The statistical results of the overall analysis indicate that the mean values of the ratios of predicted to measured lateral capacities vary from 0.62 to 1.14 with an average of 0.88. However, the settlement predictions were much more widely scattered than the ultimate load predictions and in general all the methods have a tendency to under predict the deflections. A new method is proposed by modifying the Broms's method to estimate the lateral deflections of free headed rigid and flexible piles separately. The proposed modified methods were found to be reasonably good in comparison to existing methods and to overestimate deflections.

The use of statistical design to optimize deinking process design has been studied for the flotation deinking of newspapers. The interactions of two variables are often important in determining flotation deinking efficiency. The interactions can be synergistic or antagonistic. These interactions would not be discovered using the traditional method of varying one parameter and holding the other variables constant. An experiment design in which two or more process parameters are varied simultaneously is required to identify these interactions. A considerable number of conclusions could be drawn about the relative importance of process variables on ink particle size distribution, ink removal efficiency, and flotation yield loss in a flotation deinking process. However, these findings could be influenced by the deinking surfactant and the ink chemistry.

Demand for construction raw materials depends on investment in housing, other buildings and infrastructure. The provision of these materials requires early knowledge of future trends in construction investment. By using scenarios possible future developments and bandwidths can be explored. Policy makers in government organisations as well as in the private sector can base their policy decisions upon these insights. In this paper we discuss the case of sand and gravel in the Netherlands. We will show that, depending on the future role of government and the degree of internationalisation, the long term demand for construction raw materials will strongly diverge. Nevertheless there are some common developments such as a decreasing population growth, a smaller share of the labour force in total population and a growing wealth. In different scenarios we will encounter different conditions for minerals provision and for sustainable development.

"This presentation reviews three continuous centrifuge separators, the Falcon-C, Kelsey Jig and Multi-Gravity Separator, two units with possible synergies with centrifuges, the In-Line Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor, and two centrifuge prototypes, the continuous Knelson and the Altair Jig. Typical applications, potential problems, promising synergies and general concentration mechanisms are discussed. A general discussion on the sources of information, the nature of the fluidization water flow, test work for potential centrifuge separations and the early life cycle of new technology, using centrifuge separators as an example, follows. It excels at recovery very dense minerals in very small concentrations, and has become a workhorse of the gold industry. Falcon’s Super-Bowl comes a distant second, with very similar applications. A number of copycats are available, and are generically identified as “Knelsons.” This presentation will not address these units explicitly, but as possible synergies."

The copper content in the waste slag represents the greatest loss in the process of Caraíba Metais' Smelter. By identifying the variables responsible for copper stabilization in the slag, a minimization on these losses is expected, producing a granulated waste slag with a copper content lower than 0.7%. Statistics resourses such as control charts, Pareto's diagram and correlations curves were applied for the data obtained in the first semester of 1992. The magnetite and the calcium oxide contents in the slag of the Flash Smelter Furnace were most prominent variables. Some operational changes introduced during and after this investigation have shown good results.

"INTRODUCTIONThe removal of water or liquid from slurries and solutions is a procedure generally present in many process industries. This has prompted the development of many mechanical and thermal devices with which, I have no doubt you are al1 familiar.In the mining industry, beneficiation of ores necessitates ' the removal of water or other 1iquid from the concentrate material. The most common method of accomplishing this is by means of thickeners, vacuum filters and rotary dryers, generally all three and in that order;The use of spray drying techniques to obtain the same end has many advantages and these will be outlined here.THE PRINCIPLE OF SPRAY DRYINGA Spray Dryer consists of a cyclone shaped chamber where hot air and atomized concentrate are introduced in the upper section. (Sec figure No. 1). Efficient mixing of these two streams produce dry concentrate and moist spent air, both of which are removed from the base of the chamber.Thermal dewatering involves the product ion of heat and spray drying has no special requirements in this area. Generally a direct fired air heater is used and the products of combustion whether they stem from the use of gas, oil or coal fuel go into the spray dryer along with quench or dilution air which is used to reduce the combustion gases to the desired temperature. This generally lies in the range of 1,000 to 1,600° F. In spite of these relatively high inlet temperatures, the spray drying process eliminates the need for refractory lining or indeed any special heat resistant metals except on the air inlet ducting. Waste heat may also be used even if a significant amount of contamination is present."

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. ABSTRACT: One alternative to close a radioactive waste repository in rock salt is the construction of a “Cross Section Closure (CSC)“ sealing barrier. The proposed material for the CSC is highly compacted bentonite. To investigate the swelling behaviour of a highly compacted bentonite a large number of laboratory tests were performed. In addition, large scale model test were carried out to demonstrate the development of a nearly homogeneous and isotropic swelling pressure. The results of the large scale model tests were interpreted numerically based on the models for stress-strain behaviour and water uptake which are implemented in the finite element codes FEST03 and HYDOPO. The investigations show a good agreement of the results of the model tests and the corresponding analyses and show, that the theoretical models are capable of describing the behaviour of sealing structures based on highly compacted bentonite. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Eine Möglichkeit für den Verschluß eines Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle im Steinsalz ist die Konstruktion einer Querschnittsabdichtung aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit. Zur Untersuchung des Quellverhaltens von hochverdichtetem Bentonit wurden eine große Anzahl von Laborversuchen durchgeführt. Um die Entwicklung eines nahezu homogenen und isotropen Quelldrucks nachzuweisen, wurden darüber hinaus auch Modellversuche in größerem Maßstab durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Modellversuche wurden im Hinblick auf die Wasseraufnahme und das Spannungs-Verformungsverhalten mit Hilfe numerischer Berechnungen mit den finite Element Programmen FEST 03 und HYDOPO interpretiert. Die Untersuchungen zeigen gute Übereinstimmungen zwischen Versuchs- und Berechnungsergebnissen. Die numerischen Modelle sind somit geeignet, das Verhalten von Abdichtungsbauwerken aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit zutreffend zu beschreiben. RÉSUMÉ: Une possibilité pour fermer un dépôt final de déchets radioactifs dans sel gemme est la construction d'un étanchement de coupe transversale, fabriqué de bentonite fortement compacté. Pour étudier le comportement de gonflement de bentonite fortement compacté, de nombreux essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés. En outre, des essais sur modèle sur une plus grande échelle ont aussi été exécutes afin de prouver le développement d'une pression de gonflement à peu près homogène et isotrope. Les résultats de ces essais sur modèle étaient interprétés en vue de l'absorption d'eau et du comportement contraintes-déformations par le moyen de calculs numériques avec les programmes d'éléments finis FEST03 et HYDOPO. Les études montrent de bonnes conformités entre des résultats d'essai et de calcul. Les modèles numériques sont ainsi capables de décrire justement le comportement d'ouvrages d'étanchement fabriqués de bentonite fortement compacté.

The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

The possible utility of selected compositions in the systems SrO-ZrO2-MgO and SrO-ZrO2-Dolomite for commercial refractory products was confirmed in this study. Specifically the compositions of interest are located in the sub-systems SrZrO3-ZrO2-MgO and SrZrO3-ZrO2-Dolomite. Both sub-systems have regions that are not affected by hydration, but the sub-system SrZrO3-ZrO2-MgO has a larger candidate compositional region. Solid state phase relations were determined for the subject systems over the temperature range 1600°C to 1300°C, with compatibility diagrams presented for each. The systems appear to show good refractory character with no apparent low melting compositions. As the compositions of commercial interest lie mostly in the higher ZrO2 portion of each system, information is presented regarding the firing treatment required to develop stabilized cubic ZrO2. A list of suggestions for further study of these systems, to further delineate the characteristics required for possible commercial utilization, is presented.

The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. Important topics discussed among the attendees included the price of copper, community relations and education.

The accelerated growth of urbanization processes and current environmental concerns brought to light the existing enormous quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW). Considering the frequent lack of adequate landfill areas available for the disposal of these materials, their use in the manufacture of ceramic products has been attracting a growing interest from researchers and is becoming common practice, with the consequent relief in public administration concerns for the C&DW appropriate management. This work describes the study of clay-based products added with C&DW collected directly from the construction industry. Samples containing up to 50 wt.% C&DW were uniaxially pressed and sintered in air in an electric furnace (950-1150 °C, 1 hour). Sintered test pieces were characterized by X-ray diffraction, apparent density, open porosity and flexural strength. The results showed that up to 50 wt.% C&DW can be added to the clay material, with no degradation in the final product properties.

Enthalpies above 298° K were determined for AgCl to 1,400° K and for AgBr to 1,200° K by copper-block calorimetry. Before melting, both compounds showed an anomalous increase in enthalpy, an effect associated with lattice defect formation. Melting points and heats of fusion were determined to be AgCl, 730° K and 2,945 cal/mole; AgBr, 700° K and 2,030 cal/mole. The heat capacity of both melted substances decreased with increasing temperature over the entire liquid ranges investigated. Enthalpies above 298° K were tabulated at even temperatures along with derived entropy increments and heat capacity values. The results were combined with the known heats of formation and entropies at 29.8.15° K to obtain values of the heats and free energies of formation over the range 298.15° to 1,400° K for AgC1 and 298.15° to 1,200° K for AgBr.

As expected from similar crystal structures and favorable atomic size factors, titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum are completely soluble in one another above the transformation temperature of titanium. The fl phase parameters of the continuous solid solution are shown graphically. Limiting compositions for retained fl phase have been determined. VANADIUM and molybdenum both have body-centered-cubic structures at all temperatures and, from the atomic diameter comparison factor, 3.9 pct, would be expected to form a complete series of solid solutions. The existence of complete solubility has been confirmed by work' at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Furthermore, vanadium and molybdenum have favorable atomic size factors to form complete binary solid solutions with the B phase, high temperature form of titanium, which also has body-centered-cubic structure. Pietro-kowsky and Duwez' and Hansen et al." have established the existence of the complete series of solutions in these binary systems. It would be logical, therefore, to expect that p-titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum would be completely soluble in one
