The Minera Candelaria concentrator was commissioned in August 1994, and in October 1997 it doubled its grinding capacity. The concentrator was designed to treat 56,000 metric tonnes of copper ore with a primary crusher, two grinding circuits, pebble crushing, and flotation. The grinding circuit includes two 11.2 m (36 ft) diameter by 4.6 m (15 ft) long semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, each fitted with a 12 MW motor. Throughout the history of Candelaria, different strategies have been developed to maximize the plant's operational time, strategies that include increasing the life of the SAG mill liners and reducing the time involved in changing these elements. This work describes the improvements made in the design of the liners, the change planning, and a new strategy to change the liners with the purpose of increasing their use and throughput.

"This paper defines the responsibilities and functions of the Maintenance Department, and its organization, physical and human assets, highlighting the unique operating problems. Due to the self-sufficient aspect of the Asbestos Hill Deception Bay project, the Maintenance Department cover-s fields that are numerous and very dissimilar: production, mobile, processing, service, power generation, fire protection, heating, water and sewage disposal equipment. Added to this, buildings, plant and camps, wharves and communications equipment all demand versatility, adaptability and expertise from maintenance personnel. Good maintenance practices are a necessity in this environment and are more critical than at southern locations; that is, high-quality replacement material, complete and well-controlled preventive maintenance, major repairs on a component-replacement basis, updated inventory, efficient training and permanent contacts with suppliers, combined with an equipment improvement program, updated specifications on lubricants, hoses, seals, filters, etc., are mandatory. The seasonal aspect of the operations applies a great deal of pressure on the maintenance team, as the production months do not permit major repairs. Short- and medium range planning and accurate evaluation of equipment conditions highly influence production efficiency. Maintenance control, planning and scheduling do not follow the accepted standard routines, as personnel turnover normally does not permit an accumulation of knowledge of the equipment history and condition by the •individual tradesman."

The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy. The construction of electric generating facilities in Canada is expanding at a rapid rate to satisfy the demands of a rising population and new uses for electrical energy. With remaining economic water power resources in the process of development, generation from thermal sources continues to grow. The increase in thermal capability has been somewhat arrested by a de-pressed economy, widening of inter-provincial and state transmission networks and decisions to exploit certain water resources before high capital investment is further in-creased by rising construction costs. The introduction of extra high volt-age transmission lines will further delay thermal generation planning, but in due course, when the effects of restrictive factors have been dissipated, steam-electric generation from fossil fuels will rise to considerable proportions. In time, nuclear sources will contribute a growing share to thermal power, but, it is doubtful if nuclear participation will ever displace conventional fuels for steam rising, unless it can be adapted to operate efficiently for variable outputs in peaking service. There are five logical stages in the search for orebodies in virgin territory, namely: (1) reconnaissance inventory of geology, and related investigations; (2) development of broad concepts as a basis for selecting regions of potential mineral deposits; (3) assessment of criteria leading to specific localities within these regions; (4) geo-physical and geochemical studies that will delineate small anomalous areas; and (5) stripping, drilling or other means of locating ore. In addition, the development of new means of extracting mineral resources and the finding of new uses play a vital role in our mineral industry. The continued growth of this industry will be largely governed by our ability to develop or to adapt new concepts and techniques, and to produce a greater number of scientists and engineers. It should always be remembered that more than one-third of Canada's exports are dependent upon our ability to find, develop and economic-ally exploit new orebodies.

This paper deals with the exploration, development and current operations of the salt mine at Goderich, Ontario operated by the Sifto Salt Division of Domtar Chemical Limited. The rock salt is obtained from a bed 1,760 feet below the surface, 75 feet thick, extending under Lake Huron. Annual production is in excess of one million tons. Large mobile equipment is used. Details of this equipment, as well as the shaft layout, which permits the equipment to be lowered underground with a minimum of trouble are outlined. Mining, crushing and screening procedures' are rev1ewed. Reference is also made to productivity salt distribution and uses.

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. "In 1957, an asbestos orebody was discovered in the northern sector of the Ungava Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, an area now identified as Asbestos Hill. The deposit is situated on a plateau 1700 feet above sea level and 42 miles inland from Hudson Strait. It is a bleak, iso. lated location of typical arctic environment. Fifteen years were to pass before the first shipment of ungraded fibre was made in 1972. These years we1•e occupied with field surveys and investigations, diamond drilling, engineering design, evaluation of investment and operating costs, and construction. The problems normally associated with mine development were further complicated by location, isolation, and the extreme cold and permanently frozen ground of the arctic regions. Unique to an isolated arctic operation are the organization of support facilities and services, procurement and retention of personnel, construction of access roads and airports, and scheduling of product out and supplies in during the short summer period of sea navigation."

Nickel is used in a wide variety of applications from consumer goods to industrial uses. In many of these uses, nickel contributes to the environmental attributes of the product. The challenge, however, is measuring that contribution, comparing it to the environmental cost of production, and communicating the role of nickel to the customer in a way that is easy to understand. This paper presents the Nickel Institute?s approach to climate change as a global commodity industry association, and discusses where we stand with regard to some of these key questions. It also identifies issues for the nickel industry moving forward ? challenges that are likely to be common to other commodities.

Modern civilization, modern industry, and modern standards of living, bring into, sharp relief the present-day essentiality of metals .and minerals, and the wide and diversified use which is made of them. Any attempt, therefore, to appraise the international situation today must take into consideration the metal and mineral resources of the world. If, as some believe, the world is divided into two distinct ideologies of political belief, one unalterably opposed to the other, so that armed conflict is unavoidable, then the question of national strength in mineral resources becomes of paramount importance. If, however, it is possible to avoid war by raising the standard of living in the underdeveloped ?areas of the world, thus ensuring all peoples everywhere against the dread spectres of starvation and disease, then the development of the world's mineral resources assumes even greater importance. Today it is difficult to realize that, prior to the industrial revolution in Great Britain, only a few of the metals and minerals now in common use entered into the everyday life of the people. !iron and steel, copper, lead, tin, and zinc, usually in .their unalloyed forms, along with the more common industrial minerals, were those most widely used, and then only in limited amount. With the advance of technology in metallurgy and in fabricating skills, the list of commercial metals and minerals has expanded until today they number more than eighty.

It is the purpose of this paper to point out conditions as they exist in the merchandizing of coal, to compare these conditions with methods in use by competitive producers of coal substitutes, and to present briefly some suggestions which may help the individual operator to market more coal in the immediate future, while we are waiting for the scientist and research worker, who are now busy on coal betterment , to produce in a practical way the results which they now write about in such glowing terms. While it may be unnecessary to call the attention of coal operators to the present deplorable condition of the industry, it might be well to impress upon our members in other branches of mining, as well as upon the public at large, the seriousness of the situation. Emerging from the war and the period of reconstruction that followed, the coal industry found itself with too many mines and too many men for normal conditions. To make matters worse, the interruptions in deliveries caused by strikes, the unfavourable publicity caused by socialistic propaganda, and the repeated governmental investigations, made the market a fertile field for coal substitutes which were not so handicapped. These substitutes were well advertised, and were marketed in an up-to-date manner, furnishing an example from which the coal operator could well profit. Now, whether or not there is agreement as to the cause or causes of this condition, there can be no doubt that we are today face to face with the fact that the sale of coal has not kept pace with the sale and use of other commodities. Had it done so, we would ere this have been able to take care of the surplus labour and work our mines at least approximately full time.

The purpose of this paper is to outline a recent development in ground fault protection. The paper deals with the A problems of both grounded and ungrounded systems, with regard to hazards to personnel and equipment, and shows that the increased sensitivity and speed of operation of this new detector results in increased safety to personnel and reduced stresses on equipment, and permits the detection of leakage currents before they become serious faults. The detector can be applied to all distribution systems, either A.C. or D.C., up to 15 kv., and the detector itself can be tested at regular intervals without interrupting line circuits. T HERE is always controversy among engineers as to whether distribution systems should be grounded or ungrounded. The concept of sustainable development has been evolved into a working framework for sustainable manufacturing, in which the environmental requirements are introduced into product development at the design stage. This keynote paper is discussing a number of issues pertaining to the impact of manufacturing on the environment. The conflicting requirements of sustainable development, sustainable manufacturing (SM) and economical growth are presented in the light of successful case studies that were able to convert conflicts into opportunities. Integration of SM into the product life cycle is also presented. A number of concepts that are related to Ecoefficiency, e.g., inverse manufacturing, demanufacturing and re-manufacturing are also discussed. The paper underlines the fact that the positive impact of this new philosophy is equally applicable and beneficial to both; developed and developing countries. The paper concludes with an overview of Global trends in environmentally benign manufacturing (EBM); e.g., product-take back and emerging material and processing technologies. The state-of-the-art approach to Life Cycle Impact Assessment and integration of design for the environment DfE principles are demonstrated through some case study.

"This study is part of large and an ongoing investigation into the development of a light-weight and highly fluid mine fill for various applications in mining and civil operations. Foam mine fill is the new material proposed for backfilling mines, and is fabricated by mixing stable foam into a mixture of tailings, binders, and water. This paper investigates the effects of both binder dosage and the amount of foam used upon the mechanical and physical properties of foam fill, mainly in regards to compressive strength, porosity and density.Samples were prepared using tailings from a copper mine as the inert material, Normal Portland Cement as the main binding agent, and a foaming agent with a foam generator. Samples were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days and were then subjected to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. Select samples were subjected to mercury intrusion porosimetry, so as to study the microstructural properties. An empirical model was then developed, using a response surface methodology to establish a relationship between the investigated parameters. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe disposal of mine tailings is a significant issue in the mining industry, particularly as mine production increases. Many mines re-use mine tailings for backfilling, which is a method for reducing environmental exposure to tailings, maintaining underground stability, and increasing ore recovery (Benzaazoua, Belem & Bussière, 2002).This paper introduces a new type of backfill called ‘foam mine fill’. This proposed backfill material is similar to cellular concrete, as air bubbles are entrained in cement or lime mortar, resulting in a cellular structure (Narayanan & Ramamurthy, 2000). Air voids can occupy up to 70% of the volume of concrete, which makes it light- weight, and thus can be used for a wide range of civil applications, including backfilling (Tarasov et al. 2010; Panesar, 2013). Unlike cellular concrete, the incorporation of air bubbles into a mixture of tailings, binder and water makes foam fill a potential new backfilling material. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation on foam fill samples found that pulp densities should be optimized before adding the foam, in order to produce consistent samples without foam segregation or losses (Hefni et al., 2014)."

WE should indeed feel proud and satisfied with the accomplishments of our great mining and metallurgical. industries during the past quarter of a century, for they have vastly exceeded those of any previous period of like duration. 1 feel that Canadians, and particularly those in the mining industry, should know more concerning the important role our industry will be called upon to play in the present war. Our Empire metals will be an outstanding factor in this conflict. Every man connected with the industry, from the lowest paid labourer to the highest official, can feel proud that his every effort results in more and more production of those metals which will help to give the Empire supremacy. He can feel assured that, by sticking to his job and by putting his whole heart into his work, he is making a contribution towards winning the terrible struggle in which our Empire and our gallant French allies are engaged. These two great peoples will have ro bear the brunt of the task of ridding the world of the menace of those who would set up force. and might in the place of right and justice in the settlement of international affairs. As the present European crisis developed, it became evident that they, alone, would have to accept the challenge and fight the enemies of Democracy to ensure the survival of the small nations of Europe and, indeed, of the great democratic powers themselves. The acquisitive eye of the German leaders had looked far ahead and they had realized that the eastern European states, already reeming with population, were no solution to Germany's space problem; but they thought that these states could be gobbled up one by one, each in turn strengthening Germany's might until it could successfully challenge France and England. No glimmer of doubt dimmed their vision. The two great democracies once subdued, they could proceed to seize Canada and the United States. This clone, they would have an abundance of room to expand, as well as those resources-grain, timber, cotton, nickel, iron, lead, zinc, copper, gold, silver, sulphur, oil-which German statesmen have always coveted. Von Ribbentrop, von Alvensleben, Bernstorff, and many others have made exhaustive studies of our resources. German rulers had been told that the French would not fight and that the British could not. They knew of the rust on the British war machine. There was no cloud in the sky; their fond dream was at last robe fulfilled.

Introduction In the period from 1939 to the present, Canada has experienced a remarkable industrial expansion, rising to probably seventh in rank amongst world countries. In the early part of this period, the desperate need for military supplies unloosed tremendous amounts of capital for building new factories and for expanding and converting existing facilities. Mines, factories, and other divisions of the industrial economy bent every energy toward greater and greater output. The result was an 80 per cent increase in the volume of the nation's production within a period of four years, a truly remarkable accomplishment and one in which the mining industry had a very vital part. After the critical year, 1944, the tempo of industry eased off a bit, dropping approximately 20 per cent by 1946. At this time the prospects or post-war industry were clouded by monetary and political chaos in overseas countries, by trade restrictions, and by market uncertainties. There was, of course, a pent-up demand, both at home and abroad, for civilian goods that had been curtailed during the war and for capital equipment that had been destroyed. In the midst of this world-wide uncertainty, if anyone had ventured to predict that by the end of 1950 Canada's industrial output would be back to the 1944 level and humming along at nearly twice the best pre-war pace, he would have been considered rash indeed. Yet this has been the case.

With the demand for larger diameter raises under all ground conditions and the increasing price of drill rods and operating costs, it was evident that there was a need for a raise borer with a variable-speed drive and fast-response torque limiting control. The raise boring machine described in this paper was developed after several years of market research and discussions with mine operators and construction contractors. This paper discusses the Ingersoll-Rand raise borers with the solid-state controlled DC motor drives. These machines have gained wide acceptance in the five-year period since being placed in operation and are designed to accommodate the range of raise diameters and lengths most required today.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

"I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. Estimates for the use of all refined petroleum products in the four Atlantic provinces are:"
