The objective of this paper and presentation is to review the different criteria and methodology used by AEL and other organisations to create a pre-split design which delivers a stable highwall for the life of that part of the mining operation. It will look at the need to adapt and change the way, size and direction of the production blasts as the mining phase approaches the highwall position for which a pre-split has been created. Electric furnaces used for smelting and those used for scrap melting exhibit different performance profiles in terms of electrical characteristics. However, the underlying principles are the same for either case. The rationalization of these variables is a major concern for furnace operators and designers. This paper presents the results of a two year study of high speed real time data from a number of electric furnaces around the world, covering a very wide range of design philosophy and product manufacture, to provide a better mathematical insight into rationalizing the furnace operation.

ABSTRACT: An evaluation of the importance of the thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings (THM) on the performance assessment of a deep underground storage design has been made as part of the international DECOVALEX III project. It is a numerical study that simulates a generic repository configuration in the near field in a granite medium. The thermo-hydro-mechanical evolution of the whole configuration is simulated over a period of 100 years. The model used to represent the unsaturated behaviour of the various porous media makes allowance for moisture transfers through the effect of thermal and water gradients. The paper presents a comparison of the temperature, water pressure and stress fields obtained by TM, TH, HM and THM coupled calculations. The results demonstrate that temperature is hardly affected by the couplings. In contrast the influence of the couplings on the mechanical stresses is considerable. This is attributed to the key role that water has on bentonite swelling or shrinkage effects that are dependent on its saturation level variations. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Im Rahmen des internationalen Projekts DECOVALEX III wurde untersucht, wie groß der Einfluss thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischer Kopplungen (THM) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Konzeptes zur Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfälle zu bewerten ist. Bei dieser numerischen Behandlung wird eine generelle Lagerungskonfiguration in granitartigem Milieu simuliert. Die thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischen Prozesse werden für eine Dauer von 100 Jahren simuliert. Bei dem Modell, mit dem das Verhalten der verschiedenen, unterschiedlich porösen Milieus in ungesättigtem Zustand dargestellt werden soll, werden die Feuchtigkeitstransporte infolge thermischer und hydraulischer Vorgänge berücksichtigt. Verglichen werden in diesem Artikel verschiedene Temperatur-, Wasserdruck- und Beanspruchungsfelder, die sich aus TM-, TH-, HM- und THM gekoppelten Berechnungen ergaben. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass die Temperatur nur gering von den Kopplungen berührt wird. Die Einflüsse der Kopplungen auf die Mechanik sind hingegen bedeutend; ausschlaggebend dafür ist der Faktor Wasser, der den Bentonit je nach Sättigungsgrad quellen oder trocknen lässt. RESUME : Dans le cadre du projet international DECOVALEX III, une évaluation de l’importance des couplages thermo-hydro-mécaniques (THM) sur les performances d’un concept de stockage de déchets fortement radioactifs a été menée. Il s’agit d’une étude numérique simulant une configuration générique de stockage en champ proche dans un milieu granitique. L’évolution thermo-hydro-mécanique de l’ensemble est simulée sur une période de 100 ans. Le modèle utilisé pour représenter le comportement non saturé des différents milieux poreux prend en compte les transferts d’humidité sous l’effet de gradients thermiques et hydriques. L'article présente une comparaison des champs de température, de pression d’eau et de contraintes obtenues par des calculs couplés TM, TH, HM et THM. Les résultats montrent que la température est peu affectée par les couplages. En revanche, l’incidence des couplages sur la mécanique est importante; ce qui est attribué au rôle majeur joué par l’eau à travers les effets de gonflement ou de retrait de la bentonite selon la variation de son degré de saturation. Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its Regulations, the much-publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter and its associated Scorecard.

Chemical Initiatives? Umbogintwini plant is the production facility of Chemical Initiatives? business. Umbogintwini?s J Plant manufactures sulphuric acid. The plant was designed and built by Simon Carves, and was commissioned in 1974. The plant was designed to produce 500 tons/day of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) at maximum rates. The Sulphuric acid manufacturing is through the famous contact process whereby liquid Sulphur is injected through dried air in a burner operating at 1000 °C to form sulphur dioxide (10.5% SO2). The SO2 gas is then cooled in waste heat boiler no.1 before being fed to a four pass converter which provides 99.5% SO2 conversion to sulphur trioxide (SO3). The SO3 gas is the absorbed by 98.5% H2SO4 through the inter-pass & final tower to make more concentrated acid and dilute it with water back to 98.5% H2SO4 in acid pump tanks and dispatched to storage tanks. The manufactured Sulphuric acid is supplied to a variety of industrial manufacturing customers includes Pulp & Paper industry, Mining industry, Chemical manufacturing industry etc. During the 1st quarter of the year 2007, Chemical Initiatives undertook a study to up rate the sulphuric acid plant output by 10% (i.e. from 500 tpd to 550 tpd).

"BackgroundThe paper discusses post-mining land use however, the essence of the topic is the emotional motivation behind the decisions related to mining investment and development. Therefore this is not a typical SAIMM technical paper about the science and techniques of post-mining land use. There are already numerous papers written and conferences held on this aspect of post-mine land use; the science is well understood, but the evidence of the practical application of the (environmental, social, and economic) science is sparse. At a recent conference held in November 2017 on the theme of ‘Science, Business, Society Dialogue – linking science, society, business and policy for the sustainable use of abandoned mines in the SADC region’, it was demonstrated through the delivery of several papers on the possible viable options of post-mine land use. The conference was structured in nine sessions, covering the following relevant topics:? Sessions 1 and 2: Nature and magnitude of the problem: raising awareness? Sessions 3 and 4: International experiences in remediation: case studies? Sessions 5, 6 and, 7: Technological solutions: converting liabilities into assets? Session 8: Implementing solutions: social and legal aspects? Session 9: Wrap up, lessons learned: conference resolution.Summaries of the key outcomes of the sessions are available for reference.The aim of this paper, accompanied by the video speech, is to provide a visualization of the possibilities of post-mine land use. Mining contributes approximately 7% to South Africa’s GDP - this is the lowest it has ever been and is attributable to both a diversifying economy and to poor mining and investment policy which has resulted in reduced investment in the sector. The objective of the paper is to highlight the opportunities, for succeeding and diversifying economic activity following mining and mineral extraction which can continue to sustain the livelihoods and wellbeing of communities and societies beyond mining.During mining, very few alternative and local economies develop. Dependence on mining and its value chain prevails until mining ceases. This idea is conveyed in Figures 1a and b."

Concerning the excavation of rock cavern, it is one of the most important issues to evaluate the behavior of rock joints. But few detailed measurements for joint behavior had been conducted. Therefore, in order to evaluate the stability of rock cavern, effective approach for monitoring and analyzing the joint behavior needs to be developed. In this paper, authors described the results of analysis for joint behavior during the excavation by comparing with both results of the in-situ measurement by BTV and the numerical analysis by MBC model. Bei Ausschachten von Gesteinshöhlen ist es von besonderer Bedeutung, das stark von den Verbindungsteilen beeinflusste Gesteinsverhalten zu bewerten. Jedoch wurden bisher nur wenige Beobachtungen über das Öffnungsverhalten von Verbindungen durchgeführt. Daher muss ein effizientes Verfahren zur Überwachung der Stabilität unterirdischer Höhlen und der Analyse des Verhaltens von Verbindungsstellen entwickelt werden. In der vorliegenden Studie beschreiben die Autoren das Verhalten von Verbindungsstellen während der Ausschachtung durch Vergleiche sowohl mit den Ergebnissen von in situ Messungen mittels BTV als auch numerische Simulation mit dem MBC Modell, welches auch Diskontinuitäten berücksichtigen kann. Quand il s’agit d’excaver une caverne dans une roche ayant des joints très développés, il importe fort d’évaluer le comportement de la roche. Cependant, le nombre d’observations du comportement des roches effectuées au niveau de joints est loin d’être suffisant. Par conséquent, pour s’assurer de la stabilité des parois des cavernes souterraines, il a fallu mettre au point une méthode fiable de détection et d’analyse du mouvement des joints. Dans cet article, les auteurs décrivent leurs études de comportement des joints pendant l'excavation, en comparant les résultats des mesures effectuées in-situ, dans un chantier d’excavation par BTV , avec ceux d’analyse de la simulation numérique par MBC permettant de tenir compte des discontinuités.

On the basis of in situ study of pillar loading at different sites, an attempt is made in this paper to visualize the development of mining induced stress under varying geo-mining conditions. Field study demonstrated interesting interaction between size of pillar and nature of roof rock mass under the influence of increasing dimension of the excavation. Stiffness of pillars/overburden, extraction ratio and depth cover are observed to be the important parameters for the estimation of mining induced stress over the pillar. These parameters influence, both, the value of ultimate induced stress (vertical) and its range of influence ahead of the face line. Further, it is observed that the change in width/height (w/h) ratio of a pillar has got considerable influence over the nature of mining induced stress over it. Impact of highly dynamic nature of mining induced stress over the natural supports is observed to be the most serious factor for the safety of working under a hard and massive roof rock mass. On the basis of these observations, a conceptual model of interaction between the natural support and overlying strata is discussed in the paper. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Aufgrund ist in situ Studium von Säule Beladung an verschiedenen Stellen, ein Versuch in diesem Papier gemacht, die Entwicklung des Bergbaus vostellen sich, Spannung unter Änderung von Geo Bergbau von Bedingungen hat veranlaßt. Feld Studium hat interessante Wechselwirkung zwischen Größe von Säule und Natur von Dach Felsen Masse unter dem Einfluß von Vermehrung Dimension des excavation vorgeführt. Steifheit des Säulen Overburden, Herausziehung Verhältnisses und Tiefe sind beobachtet bedeckt, die wichtigen Parameter für die Schätzung des Bergbaus zu sein, Spannung über der Säule hat veranlaßt. Diese Parameter beeinflussen, beide, der Wert allerletzter veranlaßter Spannung (senkrecht) und sein Bereich des Einflusses voraus von der Gesicht Linie. Weiter ist, es beobachtet, daß die Änderung in Breite Höhe (W H) Verhältnis einer Säule beträchtlichen Einfluß über der Natur des Bergbaus erhalten hat, Spannung hat darüber veranlaßt. Schlag sehr dynamischer Natur des Bergbaus ist Spannung über den natürlichen Stützen beobachtet hat veranlaßt, der ernsteste Faktor für die Sicherheit des Arbeitens unter einer harten und massiven Dach Felsen Masse zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Beobachtungen, ein begriffliches Modell der Wechselwirkung zwischen der natürlichen Stütze und der überlagernde strata ist im Papier diskutiert. RESUME: En se basant sur dans l'étude de situ de chargement de pilier aux sites différents, une tentative est faite dans ce papier pour envisager le développement de creuse la tension persuadée sous varier de conditions de geo creuse. L'étude de champs a démontré l'interaction intéressante entre la taille de pilier et la nature de masse de rocher de toit sous l'influence d'augmenter de dimension de l'excavation. La raideur de piliers overburden, la proportion d'extraction et la couverture de profondeur est observée pour être les paramètres importants pour le jugement de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus le pilier. Ces paramètres influencent, les deux, la valeur de tension persuadée ultime (vertical) et sa gamme d'influence en avant de la ligne de face. Plus, il est observé que le changement dans la largeur hauteur (le w h) la proportion d'un pilier a reçu l'influence considérable par-dessus la nature de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus il. Ausmelt top entry submerged lance technology offers a cost-effective means of carrying out a range of base metal smelting operations with minimum impact on the environment. The system is capable of using a range of fuels depending upon local costs. Due to the intense, localised reaction zone, high energy efficiency is obtained and the physical size of the plant is relatively small compared to that of most competing technologies. Capital cost can thereby be minimised. The furnace is well enclosed, such that fugitive emissions and ingress of diluting air to the gas stream are both minimised. The oxygen potential in the slag can be varied over a wide range such that the system can be applied in both oxidising and reducing duties. Following a general description of the technology, the paper discusses Ausmelt plants already in operation. The application of the technology for the provision of additional smelting capacity, for the improvement of converting operations and for slag cleaning is then described. A brief explanation of how these processes could be applied at southern African smelters is given and the paper closes with an assessment of novel Ausmelt applications for this geographical region, such as zinc recovery from sulphides.

This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

The complex heterogeneous equilibria associated with the production of manganese ferroalloys have been simulated by employing recently developed thermochemical databases. The non-ideal Mn-Fe-Si-C alloy and the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-FeO slag system have been modelled separately by the compound energy and cellular model. A large number of experimental thermodynamic and phase-equilibrium data were used to evaluate the model parameters for the liquid and solid Mn-Fe-Si-C phases. In addition to the liquid metal phase, solid mixture phases occurring in the Mn-Fe-Si-C system have also been studied. Over 500 measured equilibrium data have been utilised to verify and calibrate the model calculations. The paper will present typical simulation results, from activities of components to multicomponent heterogeneous equilibria. Good agreements can be obtained for many important technological parameters such as carbon solubility, phase relations and equilibrium diagrams, element distribution as function of temperature and slag composition etc. Application of the present models to the silicomanganese production will be demonstrated in this paper.

The process of atomisation is introduced and related to granulation. Some processes applicable to ferroalloys are discussed, along with their limitations and advantages. Examples of applications of atomisation to the processing of ferroalloys, including ferrosilicon and ferromanganese for use in the welding industry and as injectable additions to steel or cast iron are also presented. The economics of the process and the impact of process scale are discussed, along with criteria for process selection and system design.

The analysis of structure using joint set statistics is well known. Other data such as the position of discontinuities and the contacts between rock mass units cannot be easily incorporated in simple statistical analysis based on orientation alone. Algorithms to model the structure of rock slopes using measurements of the orientation and position of discontinuities are being developed by CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These algorithms provide a capability to model the structure of a rock slope and estimate the likelihood of the formation of hazardous blocks in existing or proposed rock slopes and identification of the location and size of these blocks. The algorithms provide the basis of structural modelling to identify potential failure mechanisms in rock slopes.

In the present paper, microstructure changes of solid-state reduction of industrial chromite pellets and lumpy ore were investigated with SEM/EPMA. To simulate the reactions in the packed bed zone of the Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF), carbon monoxide was used as the reducing agent, with the presence of graphite in proximity to chromite. The experiments were carried out at 1500 °C. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe and analyse the structure and composition changes of the chromite samples. It was found that reduction of lumpy ore generally took place slower than that of pellet. In all samples, chromite reduction proceeded faster in the outer part of the sample than in the centre part. The reaction mechanism is discussed on the basis of experimental results and earlier investigations. The possibilities to optimize the FeCr production process are also discussed.

In the Evraz Highveld production process, iron ore is prereduced in rotary kilns prior to charging into submerged arc furnaces (SAFs). Owing to the highly aggressive slags that are formed within the combustion zones of these kilns, chrome-oxide-containing lowcement castables have been used for some years in the kiln lining. Due to concerns around the potentially harmful effects should Cr(V1) be present in the spent linings, Highveld and its suppliers of kiln castables devoted time to developing alternative chrome-free lining materials. Such materials needed to be cost-effective and ensure good performance and improved kiln availability. This paper discusses all the parameters surrounding this development. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Mining Engineering) degree A number of high wall mining methods were developed over the years to mine coal reserves exposed on the high walls created during surface mining. The auger mining system was initially developed in the early 1940s in the United States of America. High wall mining is a method of recovering coal from seam exposed either by mechanical excavation methods or natural erosions. This is usually associated with strip-mining (opencast) where the stripping ratio is high and uneconomical to mine using the opencast mining method. This paper discusses the surface auger mining as deployed at Rietspruit Mine Services Proprietary Limited.

Ticor SA began with a detailed feasibility study in 1995. The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and mineral separation plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

This paper presents a case study where economics dictated an aggressive slope angle and where an appropriate slope management programme allowed successful completion of mining to 190m below surface. The Navachab Gold Mine is located in Namibia and is one of the few gold mines in that country. Mining by open pit methods commenced in 1990 with economics dictating an aggressive slope design to minimise waste stripping and make the mine viable. With steep slope angles in the design, and a steeply dipping footwall geology, it was necessary to introduce a comprehensive slope management programme. This required good mining practice in limit blast techniques with pre-splits and trims, and good housekeeping to effect a safe and economical operation. The slope management programme in addition required in pit mapping and logging procedures, regular survey monitoring evolving to a robotic Geomos system, as well as slope instrumentation to monitor stability. Two relatively large scale failures occurred at the mine, the second of which impacted on the east wall access ramp, while the first was confined to an operating stack. The paper describes the design and slope management techniques developed for the east wall.
